2012 SEASON

PREVIEW The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs will be a mix of both old and new faces, as head coach Leo Sayles’ squad welcomes the addition of nine newcomers, eight of which are true freshmen, to a team that returns eight players from last year’s team, four of which were starters. For the second straight season, GWU will look to a trio of experienced seniors – Carolina Solano, Dominique Bray and Molly Rhyne – to lead what is predominately a very young team from top to bottom. With a record-tying five conference wins in the Big South last season and 10 wins overall, Coach Sayles and his team will look to continue to add to their win total this season, as well as to their consistency of play, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs were streaky in their play throughout the 2011 season. “We had a very productive spring season, with all of our returners seeing significant time on the floor. On the court, we were able to improve weak areas, and we saw significant gains in the weight room,” stated Coach Sayles. “Our confidence level this season will be much higher with a season under our belts together. Our players have taken ownership of the program and have set a high standard for success.” MIDDLE BLOCKERS With the departure of four-year starter, three-time Big South AllConference Second-Team selection and the 2008 Big South Freshman of the Year in Laura Wilcox, GardnerWebb will hand over the middle to junior Tyler Cockrell. Cockrell, who was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team in

2010, came on strong in her starting role last season, as she led the team and the Big South with an average of 1.35 blocks per set, which was also a GWU Division I single-season record. Cockrell was second in the Big South with 150 total blocks and 108 block assists, which were also both GWU DI single-season records. Cockrell was strong offensively as well, as she led the team with 367 total points on the year, recording 250 kills and 21 service aces last season. Despite having played only two seasons for GWU, Cockrell holds the GWU Division I career record in total blocks with 255 entering the 2012 season. “Tyler had a record-setting season defensively, but I believe her best days are ahead of her. Offensively, we hope she will step into the shoes of Wilcox,” commented Coach Sayles. “I believe she is primed for a breakout year.”

Depth at the middle blocker will come by way of junior Amanda Murphy and freshman newcomer Tyra Montour. Murphy, who has waited patiently for her time behind both Wilcox and Cockrell over the last two seasons, is looking to compete for significant playing time in the middle for Gardner-Webb this season. The 6-0 junior has showed glimpses of strong play at the net over the last two years, recording four kills and three blocks assists in limited action against Western Carolina last season and a career-high nine kills and five total blocks in a home match against Radford back in 2010. “Amanda is a very hard worker and brings out the best in those around her. She made significant strides on the court and in the weight room and will contribute much more this fall,” said Coach Sayles.

Montour brings a lot of athleticism and versatility to the middle blocker position, as the freshman was a two-time All-State selection, a three-time All-Area honoree and the 2010 Area Player of the Year at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga. Montour, who was named to the 2011 Senior All-Star Team, led her team to two Regional Championships and to the State Finals last year as a senior. “Tyra’s athleticism and court awareness will put her in the mix for playing time,” continued Coach Sayles. “Once she acclimates herself to our game speed and intensity, I believe she is going to blossom into a player to be reckoned with.” OUTSIDE HITTERS Three-year starter Molly Rhyne will headline a group of outside hitters that will have big shoes to fill, as former 2011 starters Lauren Evans and Melissa Richie are gone from this year’s roster. Rhyne, who was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team in 2009, will look to carry more of a scoring load in 2012. Having taken a back seat last season to Wilcox, Evans and Cockrell, this season Rhyne will be a feature point in GWU’s offensive attack. Last season, Rhyne tallied 156.5 points overall,

recording 137 kills, 88 digs and 24 total blocks. Rhyne posted six matches with double-digit kills in 2011 and has totaled double digit kills in 40 different matches over her three years in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ lineup. “Molly is a solid attacker, and will step firmly into the slot played by Evans,” Coach Sayles said. “Her competitiveness and creativity is a big asset. Last season, it took her a little while to adjust to our new system, but as she adjusted, I believe she found that this system is perfect for her.” The lone other returner at the outside hitter position in 2012 is junior Erin Anderson who made the best of her playing time last season off the bench for GWU. Anderson, who played in 67 sets last season, totaled 68 points overall on 52 kills and 13 service aces last season. While making a number of spot starts last season, Anderson tallied a career-high 13 digs in back-to-back matches at the Spartan Classic and posted a career-high 11 kills against UNC Asheville. “Erin gained valuable experience last year and during the spring, and her confidence level is very high,” stated Sayles. “She can be a solid defender and has the capability to take over offensively when called upon.” With only two returners in front of them, playing time at the outside hitter spot is wide open for newcomers

Caroline (Callie) Hildebrand and Tinsley Hallman. Callie was a three-time District MVP and a four-time All-District Team selection at Signal Mountain High School in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. The two-time All-State and three-time All-Region honoree, who was also twice named to the Chattanooga Best of Preps Team, guided her team to three-straight District Championships, two straight Regional Championships and the Sectional Finals last season as a senior. “Callie brings valuable experience, guiding her 2010 team to a state championship as a junior,” commented Sayles. “She is a solid 6-rotation player and will give us much-needed depth at the outside hitter position.” Hallman comes to GWU after a strong senior season at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, S.C. in which she led her team to a 33-6-1 overall record and a top-10 ranking in the state of South Carolina. Hallman was twice named to the CAWS All-State Team, twice named to the VII-AAAA All-Region Team and also earned a spot on both the CAWS 2011 All-Star Team and the Post and Courier Low Country Team. “Tinsley is a hard worker with a great attitude. We expect to redshirt her this season and hope to develop her throughout the year,” commented Coach Sayles. Depth at the outside hitter spot will come from Montour, whose versatility and strength at the net allows her to play in both the middle as well as on the outside, and senior utility player Chelsea Hearne who played three seasons on the GardnerWebb women’s soccer team where she was a Big South All-Conference Second-Team selection in goal in 2010. “Chelsea walked on this spring and quickly earned respect as a player. She played club for a good program in high school. Her goal-

keeping in soccer has actually helped her tremendously in adjusting back to the court,” said Sayles. “She reads very well and has solid passing form. She will likely contribute as a passer/ defender, but because of her size can also contribute up front in a pinch.” RIGHT SIDE HITTERS Three-year starter Carolina Solano will once again enter the season as the favorite at the right side spot for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as she has played in over 100 sets in each of the last three years. Solano was second on the team with 77 total blocks last season, while her 68 solo blocks ranked third overall in GWU’s Division I single-season history. Solano, who is fifth in GWU’s Division I career record books with 214 total blocks, posted 193 kills last season and 250 total points. The lefty had a career-high 14 kills at home against Radford and recorded 13 kills in home wins over both High Point and Liberty last season. “Carol began to emerge as a court-leader as last season drew to an end. Her confidence, leadership, and experience will be important to us in tight games,” continued Sayles. “She sets a very strong block for us, but is also very productive offensively.” Depth at the right side position will come from junior Emily Holte and freshman walk-on Alicia Quinn. Holte, who made the transition from middle blocker to right side midway through the 2011 season, worked there all spring and has become much more familiar with the position. Last season, Holte recorded 55 kills, 19 digs, 11 blocks and five service aces in only 42 sets of play. Holte posted a career-high 10 kills and a career-best .474 attack percentage against Western Carolina at the Spartan Classic, one of her first matches lining up on the right side. “Emily was a solid role-player for us last year, and contributed in several key games last year. Her slide has proven to be a very effective attack, and she has a very tough serve,”

Sayles stated. “She is a competitor and will again prove to be an important component of our success throughout the season.” Quinn, a scholarship studentathlete on the women’s basketball team will look to also make an impact on the volleyball court as well in her first year at Gardner-Webb. The 6-2 athletic and long student-athlete will look to provide depth for the Runnin’ Bulldogs at both the right side and middle blocker positions this season, while learning the offense and style of play that Coach Sayles instills in his team. “Alicia is expected to contribute to the women’s basketball program, but loves our game. She is a solid athlete,” continued Sayles. “We will work with her this year to develop her skills and determine how best to utilize her abilities.” SETTERS Having played in all 115 sets for Gardner-Webb last season as a true freshman, the setter spot once more will be manned by sophomore Heather Feldman. Feldman, who was named to the 2011 Big South All-Freshman Team and the 2011 NCCSIA University Division All-State Team, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs and was second in the Big South Conference with 1,103 assists last season. Feldman, whose 9.59 assists per set was also second in the Big South and fifth in GWU’s

Division I single-season record books, was also second on the team with 28 service aces and 272 digs on the year in 2011. The lone freshman from last year’s roster, Feldman posted 13 double-doubles on the year and recorded 30 set assists or more in 20 different contests. “Heather stepped in last season and played like a veteran almost the entire season,” Sayles proclaimed. “As she acclimated herself to our offense, we began to see the results in conference play. This past spring, she began to assert herself as a leader, and is primed to lead our offense to new heights this season.” Freshman Devin Judge will provide depth at the setter position this season, as her versatility will allow the Runnin’ Bulldogs to do a number of different things on the court this season. Judge, who played three different positions over her four years at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Ga., finished her senior season last year ranked among the top-10 statistical leaders for the state of Georgia Class AAAA and ranked as high as No. 5 overall in 2011 among the national leaders in hitting percentage by MaxPreps. The twotime State of Georgia First-Team 7-AAAA All-Area Team selection led her team to four consecutive State Tournaments, reaching the Final Four once and the Elite Eight once. Judge finished her career with 856 kills, 324

blocks, 232 aces, 493 digs and 301 assists at Sprayberry High. “Devin’s versatility make her available in several capacities. She can play any position in the front, and has a tough serve. However, we discovered early that she has great setting hands, and is developing into a key back-up for Heather,” stated Coach Sayles. “We will be able to add a few wrinkles to our offense with Devin on the roster.” DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBERO With the graduation of 2011 defensive specialist Evan Moffitt, the libero position is up for grabs in 2012 as four players – Dominique Bray, Anna Pashkova, Katie Loftin and Katie Peck – will all compete for court time throughout the season. Bray, the lone returner on the GWU roster who has suited up at the libero spot for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, has seen time at the defensive specialist spot in each of the last two seasons. Last year, Bray was a vital player off the bench for GWU all season long, as she played in 99 sets on the year, recording 121 digs overall. The senior tallied 11 digs in GWU’s home win over High Point, nine digs in a loss to Western Carolina and eight digs in wins over Montreat, Winthrop and Wofford. “Dominique was a critical part of our improvement offensively last year. Her game experience will be

important as she leads a pack of new defenders,” stated Sayles. “She has also emerged as a key leader both on and off the floor, and will be counted on when the going gets tough.” A trio of freshmen will compete for playing time at the libero spot in Pashkova, Loftin and Peck. Pashkova, who was named to the First-Team All-District Team and the First-Team All-Conference Team last year as a senior, guided her team to their second straight State Championship and a No. 1 overall ranking in the state of Iowa by MaxPreps. Pashkova, who was also a key member of the 2010 State Championship Team and the 2009 State Runner-Up Team, was selected to the Tri-State All-Star Game for the Iowa Team last season. Loftin, who led her East Hamilton High School team in Ooltewah, Tennessee to a sixth-place finish at the TSSAA State Championship Tournament last year as a senior, was named the Region 3AA Championship Most Valuable Player. Loftin, who also earned a spot on the 2011 All-District 6AA Team and the Tennessee AllState First –Team last year as a senior, was a key contributor to her team’s Region 3AA Championship, Sectional Championship and District 6AA Runner-Up. Peck was an All-Conference and an All-WNC selection as a senior, leading her Franklin High School team

out of Franklin, N.C. to the WNCAC Championship. Peck helped guide her team to a 24-4 overall mark last season as well as a No. 23 overall ranking in the state of North Carolina. “Our three freshmen defenders will redefine Gardner-Webb defense. All three bring a tremendous level of skill, passion, and tenacity, and will compete immediately for time on the floor,” commented Coach Sayles. “Each of them is capable of earning the libero jersey, and this core will give us a depth we have not seen in our program before.” SCHEDULE The 2012 season features four tournaments, including the return of the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic, as well as matches against Southeastern Conference member Alabama and 2011 top-110 RPI teams in Ball State (36), Samford (61) and Illinois State (107). The Runnin’ Bulldogs will also face off with regional rival foes in Davidson, Elon, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Charlotte, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State and USC Upstate on top of a very challenging Big Conference slate. “The 2012 schedule will be a balance of top volleyball programs such as Ball State and Samford with solid competition from comparable schools. We’ll have extremely tough competition against five programs ranked around the top-150 in Division I volleyball,” stated Coach Sayles. “We will have the opportunity to challenge our regional competition (Charlotte, WCU, Wofford, USC Upstate, Davidson, Elon, and ETSU), while also squaring off against Alabama from the SEC. We will have a good opportunity for some quality wins, but will be pushed and tested on all levels. Our home tournament should challenge us and help us elevate our play at home in preparation for the pressures of the 2012 Big South Championship Tournament, which we will host in November.”

Sayles begins his second season as the head coach of the Gardner-Webb volleyball team, coming to Gardner-Webb in February 2011. Sayles came to Gardner-Webb after seven seasons at Bryan College in Tennessee, where he guided the Lady Lions from a mid-level conference team to a conference power. In his first season at the helm of the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ program, head coach Leo Sayles saw his team increase their win total by five games from the previous season and post five conference wins, tying the most conference wins in a singleseason for a GWU team in the program’s 11-year NCAA Division I history. The 2011 Gardner-Webb volleyball team showed constant improvement throughout the season, setting new team single-season records, individual records and career marks as the Runnin’ Bulldogs posted a 10-20 overall record and a 5-9 record in Big South Conference play. In 2011 the Runnin’ Bulldogs also received postseason recognition, as senior middleblocker Laura Wilcox earned a spot on the Big South All-Conference Second-Team for a third-time in four years, while fellow senior Evan Moffitt was tabbed the 2011 Big South Volleyball ScholarAthlete of the Year and was named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the third straight season. Freshman setter Heather Feldman received Big South All-Freshman Team honors and was the lone freshman to be named to the North Carolina College Sports Information Association University All-State Volleyball Team. On top of the individual postseason awards, the Runnin’ Bulldogs set both a number of team and individual single-season records in 2011. As a team, Gardner-Webb set a new GWU Division I single-season record in total blocks with 236 on the season and in block assists with 308 on the year. GWU’s total blocks per set average of 2.05 is the second highest for a single-season in GWU’s DI history, while their 82 solo blocks and their 11.05 assists per set average both rank third in GWU’s Division I history for a single-season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also received national recognition in 2011, as their 1.53 aces per set average placed 29th in the nation overall among

the 322 NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Individually, Wilcox set a new GWU Division I single-season record in attack percentage, posting a .348 attack percentage with a minimum of 100 kills on the year, which ranked 46th nationally among all NCAA Division I schools, while Moffitt’s 477 digs and 4.26 digs per set average both rank fourth respectively in GWU’s Division I single-season history. Not to be overshadowed, Feldman’s 1,103 set assists and 9.59 assists per set average on the year both placed her fifth overall in GWU’s DI single-season record books in those respective categories, while junior right side hitter Carol Solano’s 68 block assists ranks third and her 77 total blocks ranks fifth overall for a singleseason. However, middleblocker Tyler Cockrell’s 2011 season was record setting, as the sophomore set a new GWU Division I single-season record in total blocks with 150 and in block assists with 108 on the year. Her 1.35 blocks per set average not only was a new single-season record for GWU, but it also placed her 21st overall in the nation in blocks per set among all NCAA Division I schools. She finished the year tied for second overall with 42 solo blocks and posted the ninth highest attack percentage with a minimum of 100 kills for a single-season with a mark of .218 on the season. With strong individual seasons by a number of different players, career marks were set and career milestones were reached in a number of different categories in 2011. Wilcox recorded her 1,000th career kill and her 200th career block during the year, while Moffitt tallied her 1,000th career dig midway through the season. Wilcox set the GWU Division I record for total blocks with 229, only to have Cockrell record double-digit blocks in two of the final three matches to overtake Wilcox and set the new record at 255 and counting. The excitement was in the air in 2011, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs averaged close to 300 people over their nine home matches, a huge increase in attendance over the last several seasons, as the rafters in Paul Porter Arena were shaking from start to finish and proved to be a huge home court advantage for coach Sayles and his team. The 2011 season also included GWU’s firstever win over the Liberty Lady Flames and their first-ever conference win over High Point. During his seven years at Bryan, Sayles posted a record of 153-111, and after recording an overall record of 22-41 in his first two years, he led a complete turn around over the last five seasons, posting a 70-14 conference record, a 49-8 home record and five straight 20+ win seasons. On November 15, 2008, he attained his 100th intercollegiate victory. His 2010 team advanced to their fifth consecutive AAC Final Four finish and distinguished itself nationally throughout the season, as eight student-athletes were honored as NAIA National Scholar-Athletes, a number that was tops among the 262 members of the NAIA association. In 2009, Sayles’ team tied for their first regular season conference championship, advanced to the conference tournament championship, then had a fantastic run at the NCCAA National Tournament after receiving an at-large bid as one of the nation’s Top-10 Teams (#6 ranking in NCCAA). The Lady Lions finished second in tournament pool play and advanced to the National

Championship Final Four, where the eventual national champions, Campbellsville University, defeated them. The team broke 30 wins for the first time in over 25 years, finishing with a 31-17 record. The Lions were the 2007 AAC regular season Runners-up and advanced to the conference tournament championship for the first time in school history, then advanced to the NAIA Region XII tournament championship match, where they fell two points shy of a bid to the NAIA National Championships. The team was named NCCAA Mid-East Region Champions and earned an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament for the first time since 1984 (24-17, 15-3 in AAC). The 2006 team finished the regular season as the AAC #2 team with a 27-12 overall record and a 14-4 conference record, as Coach Sayles was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his accomplishments. Coach Sayles’ has over 20 years of experience as a volleyball coach at the high school, club and college level. In his seven seasons at Bryan, he produced two NCCAA All-Americans, two NAIA AllAmerican Honorable Mentions, 12 AVCA-NAIA All-Region, 13 NCCAA All-Region, 15 AllConference selections, six AAC All-Freshman and 37 AAC Scholar-Athletes. His teams won the AAC Champions of Character Award in 2004 and 2006, and were recognized with AVCA Academic Team Awards in 2005 and 2009. The team received a NAIA Scholar-Team Award in 2009 as well. The overall average GPA since 2004 is a 3.4. Coach Sayles’ high school girls’ teams were ranked in the top-20 in California, and as high as No. 5 in Connecticut. His boys’ teams advanced to the final four in Connecticut in each of his final two seasons there. He has a number of high school conference championships and personal awards to his credit and has won conference and regional championships in basketball, track and soccer as well. During his 10 years as a teacher, he received several awards, including the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth - Teacher Recognition award, the East Hartford School-Business Partnership Staff-Volunteer award, and the first East Hartford National Honor Society “Light Of Our Lives” award. Sayles is an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and most recently served as the Appalachian Athletic Conference Volleyball chair. He has served terms on the AVCA-NAIA Head Coaches Executive Committee and as the NCCAA Mid-East Region Chair, as well as having served on Regional and State Executive Boards for FCA. His devotions have been featured on FCA’s IMPACT daily email devotions, and he was featured in a 2007 article in FCA’s “Sharing the Victory Magazine”. Sayles is a licensed minister and sought after speaker at Christian schools, youth ministries and camps. Coach Sayles is supported by his wife of 20 years, Tanya, and their five children - Benjamin, Faith, Jonathan, Nathaniel, and Anna Rose.

Former Gardner-Webb volleyball standout Bethany Martin returned to GWU as an assistant coach in May 2011. In her first season on the sidelines at GWU in 2011, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team showed constant improvement throughout the season, setting new team single-season records, individual records and career marks as the Runnin’ Bulldogs posted a 10-20 overall record and a 5-9 record in Big South Conference play. In 2011 the Runnin’ Bulldogs also received postseason recognition, as senior middleblocker Laura Wilcox earned a spot on the Big South All-Conference SecondTeam for a third-time in four years, while fellow senior Evan Moffitt was tabbed the 2011 Big South Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the third straight season. Freshman setter Heather Feldman received Big South All-Freshman Team honors and was the lone freshman to be named to the North Carolina College Sports Information Association University All-State Volleyball Team. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also received national recognition in 2011, as their 1.53 aces per set average placed 29th in the nation overall among the 322 NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Individually, Wilcox set a new GWU Division I single-season record in attack percentage, posting a .348 attack percentage with a minimum of 100 kills on the year, which ranked 46th nationally among all NCAA Division I schools, while Moffitt’s 477 digs and 4.26 digs per set average both rank fourth respectively in GWU’s Division I single-season history. Not to be overshadowed, Feldman’s 1,103 set assists and 9.59 assists per set average on the year both placed her fifth overall in GWU’s DI single-season record books in those respective categories, while junior right side hitter Carol Solano’s 68 block assists ranks third and her 77 total blocks ranks fifth overall for a single-season. However, middleblocker Tyler Cockrell’s 2011 season was record setting, as the sophomore set a new GWU Division I single-season record in total blocks with 150 and in block assists with 108 on the year. Her 1.35 blocks per set average not only was a new single-season record for GWU, but it also placed her 21st overall in the nation in blocks per set among all NCAA Division I schools. She finished the year tied for second overall with 42 solo blocks and posted the ninth highest attack percentage with a minimum of 100 kills for a single-season with a mark of .218 on the season. With strong individual seasons by a number of different players, career marks were set and career milestones were reached in a number of different categories in 2011. Wilcox recorded her 1,000th career kill and her 200th career block during the year, while Moffitt tallied her 1,000th career dig midway through the season. Wilcox set the GWU Division I record for total blocks with 229, only to have Cockrell record double-digit blocks in two of the final three matches to overtake Wilcox and set the new record at 255 and counting. The excitement was in the air in 2011, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs averaged close to 300 people over their nine home matches, a huge increase in attendance over the last several seasons, as the rafters in Paul Porter Arena were shaking from start to finish and proved to be a huge home court advantage

for coach Sayles and his team. The 2011 season also included GWU’s first-ever win over the Liberty Lady Flames and their first-ever conference win over High Point. Martin, who graduated from Gardner-Webb with a degree in Heath & Wellness in 2009, returns to the Runnin’ Bulldogs volleyball program after two years as an assistant coach at Central Michigan, where she received a M.A. degree in Sports Administration. During her two years at Central Michigan, the Chippewas posted a 31-28 overall record, finished second in the West Division in 2009 and advanced all the way to the MAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1996. “I’m delighted Bethany has chosen to return to her alma mater and join me as we seek to build this program. Bethany is a quality individual - her character stood out to me during our conversations. She is able to connect well with the players, and brings sound knowledge and playing experience to the team,” commented Sayles. “Her work with Central Michigan will prove to be extremely beneficial to us, her familiarity with the competition around us will be needed and her recruiting background will help us find the best players to impact our program. Her personality and coaching philosophy is a good complement to mine. Her deep love for the Runnin’ Bulldogs will make her an invaluable partner as we work to make this program successful.” Martin was a four-year letterwinner for Gardner-Webb as the team’s middle blocker and held the school’s record for career blocks with 228 from 2008 to 2011. She was also only the third player in GWU’s Division I history, and one of only four overall, to break the 1,000-kill mark (1,060) and finished her career tied for ninth overall in the DI record book in service aces with 76. During her time as an undergraduate at GWU, she worked four seasons as a camp counselor for the Wisconsin PoWer Volleyball Club and two for the GardnerWebb Volleyball Team Camp. She also spent two seasons as the summer league coach for Beaver Dam High School near her home in Wisconsin.

The season, which included GWU’s first-ever win over the Liberty Lady Flames and their first-ever conference win over High Point, started out with a tough stretch of road matches in which GardnerWebb went 2-9 with wins at home over Montreat College and over Iona at the Coastal Carolina Classic. Gardner-Webb then posted backto-back wins over Wofford and Western Carolina to improve to 4-9 overall heading into the start of conference play.

After four straight road losses, three of which came in Big South play, GardnerWebb downed Winthrop 3-1 at home to stop the skid and give the Runnin’ Bulldogs their first conference win since 2009. Sitting at 5-13 overall and 1-3 in conference play, GWU fell at home to Presbyterian, but bounced back to win four out of their next five matches to improve to 9-15 overall and 4-5 in conference play. However, three straight losses to Campbell, PC and Winthrop appeared to have dampened the Runnin’ Bulldogs confidence, until Gardner-Webb, in front of a packed Paul Porter Arena, upended Liberty, 3-0, on Senior Night on November

11th to not only give GWU double-digit wins on the year, but give the Runnin’ Bulldogs five wins in conference play, the most that GWU has had in a single-season since joining the Big South in 2008. The win not only was huge for the Runnin’ Bulldog volleyball program, but it also served as a spoiler for the Lady Flames, as the loss cost Liberty the outright Big South Regular Season Championship, as the Lady Flames finished in a tie with Winthop for firstplace overall at the season’s end. Gardner-Webb then suffered a home loss to Radford the next day in the regular season finale, putting them as the No. 8 seed in the Big South Volleyball Championship Tournament the following week. There the Runnin’ Bulldogs once again met Liberty, as the No. 1 seeded Lady Flames held off a late GWU charge to win the match 3-1 and end the Runnin’ Bulldogs season at 10-20 overall and 5-9 in conference play. Despite the departure of seniors Wilcox, Moffitt and Lauren Evans due to graduation, the trio has helped to build and establish a strong foundation for the GWU volleyball program, that the returners and Coach Sayles intend to continue to grow and build on both now and in the future ... A future that looks bright for the Gardner-Webb volleyball program.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Education Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

10 Principles of Performance Cornerstone: FAITH The cornerstone of any kind of true success begins with God. A manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to seek and have a relationship with Him, guides his steps. 1. Attention to Detail * It is the mission of the athletic performance staff to carefully research, plan, and effectively execute every particular detail of training the student-athlete. 2. Testing and Evaluation * By looking at Anatomical Composition, Measurements, evaluating athletic skill, and goal setting. 3. Train Movements, not Muscles * Athletes. Not body builders. Athletic skill such as running, jumping, throwing, and shooting occur in different planes of motion, and all require proper neuromuscular recruiting patterns. * Terminology such as: push, pull, vertical, horizontal, transverse, linear, lateral are used when involving training. 4. Train Explosively * Utilizing appropriate training methods, student-athletes have the opportunity to take full advantage of their fast twitch potential. 5. Functional Mobility and Postural Control * Athletes are required to move their bodies and / or objects in a desired range of motion, while demonstrating coordination and control. * Flexibility, Range of Motion, and having a understanding of the relationship of anatomy while executing positions / movement patterns is essential. 6. Periodization and Variety * It is imperative that a successful training program utilize proper progression levels, periodized intensities, and volume design. * Exercises and drills must show variety to peak athlete interest, sustain performance levels, prevent overtraining, and cultivate competition. 7. Specificity * It is important to not only train the athlete in the movements required, but in the energy system required of the sport. 8. Diet and Recovery * Proper nutrition and rest help meet the energy demands of training. The body requires six separate types of nutrients in order to function at peak levels. It is important to consume a balance of these different types of foods to supply the necessary nutrients. 9. Attitude * You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do.â&#x20AC;? - A.J. Kitt 10. Develop Trusting Relationships * It is very difficult (if not impossible) to disrupt or break up a team whose foundation is built on trust, loyalty, and integrity.

History Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education.

In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly novel idea for its time. Today, Gardner-Webb’s GOAL classes are available at 16 centers across North Carolina. The institution officially became Gardner-Webb University in January 1993, and in 2001—four years shy of its centennial—the University began offering its first doctorate (Doctor of Ministry). Today, Gardner-Webb offers a host of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including four doctoral programs in ministry, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, and as of 2012, nursing practice. In 2006, Dr. A. Frank Bonner was inaugurated as Gardner-Webb’s 12th President, ushering in the University’s latest era of remarkable growth. Under Bonner’s leadership, Gardner-Webb has achieved record enrollments, built impressive new buildings like the newly opened Tucker Student Center, and earned national acclaim for academic quality and student achievement. Most important, though, the University has reaffirmed its commitment to the guiding and sustaining principles of faith, service, and leadership, and to preparing graduates for lives of lasting impact, “For God and Humanity.”

BONNER GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT EIGHTH YEAR

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his eighth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to GardnerWebb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. In 1987, Bonner came to GardnerWebb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1.

Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), serving on 31 accreditation committees, including 22 as committee chair. He has also chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner currently serves on the Board of the SACS Commission on Colleges; he is Vice President of the Big South Conference, Vice Chair/Chair Elect of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a previous Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous organizations. He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969.

Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift. In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs. Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher. They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have several grandchildren.

BURCH VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS 16TH YEAR

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 16th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 31st year overall in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last five academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful,

with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ in 2006-2007. In 2009-10 the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program won their first-ever Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and made an appearance in their first-ever postseason appearance in the WNIT. The following year in 2010-11, the GWU women’s basketball team won the school’s second Big South Conference Championship, the first in women’s basketball, and punched their ticket to their first-ever NCAA National Championship

Tournament. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (19881990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from GardnerWebb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and currently serves as the Dean of the Graduate School as well as a professer in the Physical Education Wellness and Sports Studies Department. The couple has three children, Travis, Danielle, a recent graduate of Brevard College (N.C.), and Amy a freshman at High Point University.

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 33rd year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scruggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Runnin’ Bulldog athletics. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie, who is an undergraduate student at Gardner-Webb.

THE BIG SOUTH

CONFERENCE

History Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The 2012-13 academic year features the Big South’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29 years of existence. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 16 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s soccer for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, begins play this season with eight members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 29-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an

individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last eight years -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB FirstYear Player Draft. This past season, the Big South had a record 41 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 10 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also won its first football playoff game (Stony Brook), had the national women’s basketball Rookie Coach of the Year, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade (Coastal Carolina, Liberty), and had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference in 2011-12. In addition, Liberty was the first men’s golf team in Conference history to win an NCAA Regional, and the Flames went on to finish 10th at the national event. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won six PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last three years.
