2013-14 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW

The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs will have a lot of familiar faces on the court in 2013-14, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs return all but one letterwinner from last season and a total of 11 players overall that saw time on the hardwood for head coach Rick Reeves and his squad in 2012-13. Returning for their senior seasons are GWU’s top-two scorers from last season in Jasmine Dale and Catrina Green, who combined averaged over 20 points per game for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2012-13. Green, who led GWU in rebounding last season at 9.4 boards per contest, highlights a frontcourt of returners in senior Tabby Koerner, juniors Jessica Heilig and Chariah Harris, and sophomore Olivia Parker. Dale headlines a core group of guards in junior Mayhana Dunovant and sophomores Lana Doran, Doreen Richardson and Candace Brown, who all saw quality minutes last season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. In addition to the returners, which includes GWU’s top-eight scorers from last season, as well as its topfour leading rebounders from a year ago, the experienced unit will also include three talented freshmen in Tierra Huntsman, Kiera Currie and Christina McQueen who will all see time on the court this season for head coach Rick Reeves’ squad. GUARDS The Runnin’ Bulldogs have perhaps the most depth at the guard GUARDS positions than they have had in the previous few seasons, as Dale returns #3 Tierra Huntsman for her fourth season at GWU and will start in the backcourt for Coach Reeves’ squad for the third straight season. The senior led GWU in #5 Lana Doran scoring last season at 10.4 points per game and shot over 42 percent #10 Doreen Richardson from behind the three-point line which ranked in the top-10 nationally overall. #22 Candace Brown Beside Dale, who will see time at both guard positions due to her #24 Mayhana Dunovant experience in running the GWU offense, will be a number of players in Dunovant, Doran, Richardson, Brown and Huntsman. #33 Jasmine Dale Both Dunovant and Huntsman will see time at the point guard position, while Doran and Richardson, who saw time at the point guard spot last season, will shift over to the two-guard spot where they will look to be more assertive on the offensive end of the floor. Dunovant, who led the team in assists last season, ran the GWU offense for most of last year and will continue to excel in her role as the lead distributer, while Huntsman is a smart, pass-first combo guard, that can shoot the ball at a high percentage from all over the floor. Doran, who was a key outside threat for the Runnin’ Bulldogs along with Dale last season, will continue to look to be that second or third scorer for GWU this season, while Richardson provides Gardner-Webb with the quick, fast-paced play on both ends of the floor and a defensive stopper out on the perimeter. Brown, a 2012-13 Big South All-Freshman Team selection who led GWU in scoring in conference play last season, will again see some time at the off-guard spot where she filled in well last season down the stretch with Dale out due to an injury. Brown was deadly in the mid-range game from a season ago and led the Runnin’ Bulldog guards in both steals and rebounds last year. 4

2013-14 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW

FORWARDS #2 Kiera Currie #11 Olivia Parker #15 Chariah Harris #22 Candace Brown #23 Jessica Heilig #25 Tabby Koerner

FORWARDS The versatility of the Runnin’ Bulldogs 3 and 4 players gives Coach Reeves and his staff a lot of options at the forward positions, as Brown, Heilig and Currie will all see time at the small forward slot. Brown proved last season that she is capable of defending much bigger players out on the perimeter, while Heilig is a slasher that can post up smaller players on the block. Currie brings a complete game to the table for GWU, as she can score from both inside and out and will see a lot of minutes off the bench this season. At the four spot, or the power forward position, Heilig will give the Runnin’ Bulldogs a chance to play small, while fellow returners in Parker, Koerner and Harris provide both experience and depth at the position.

Parker, who was second on the team in both rebounding and blocked shots last season, provides a defensive toughness for GWU down low, while both Koerner and Harris have shown that they can not only score in the paint, but that they can also work hard on the glass and get to loose balls on the floor. CENTER Once again, the center spot will be manned by Green, who is slated to be the starter for the third straight season in the middle for GWU, while depth will come from a fellow senior in Koerner and in a newcomer in McQueen. Green, who nearly averaged a double-double last season, is efficient down low where she shot over 44 percent last season and gives the Runnin’ Bulldogs an inside threat on both blocks.

CENTERS #25 Tabby Koerner #31 Catrina Green #40 Christina McQueen

Koerner brings experience to the middle for GWU and is also able to extend the defense out with her ability to knock down the outside shot, while McQueen, who can score down low and is very aggressive on the boards, will be asked to provide solid minutes off the bench in her first season as a Runnin’ Bulldog.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in

6

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic AllAmericans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -- for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s onfield accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic AllAmericans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.

Head Coach Rick Reeves, a four-time Big South Coach of the Year (1992-93, 1996-97, 1997-98, 2009-10) is entering his 10th season overall at the helm of the Gardner-Webb University Women’s Basketball program in 2013-14. Reeves came to Boiling Springs after spending five seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Southern Miss. Prior to his arrival at Southern Miss. in 1999-2000, Reeves was named the Big South Conference Coach of the Year three times and the State Coach of the Year in Virginia once during his nine year tenure from 1990-99 directing the Liberty Lady Flames’ program in Lynchburg, Va. Reeves, who has a tremendous history of rebuilding NCAA Division I programs during his 27 years of collegiate coaching, has taken his teams to the postseason six times at the Division I level - including taking GWU to its first-ever NCAA postseason appearance in 2010-11, the WNIT in 2009-10, Southern Miss to the WNIT in 1999-2000, and three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament at Liberty University (1997-1999) in which his Liberty teams combined to post a 71-16 record overall over that three year span. As the all-time career wins leader in Gardner-Webb’s Women’s Basketball history with 135 career victories, Reeves recently recorded his 400th career win with the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 55-38 home win over Presbyterian College on February 7, 2013. On November 11, 2010, Coach Reeves became the women’s basketball all-time career wins leader with his 98th win at GWU, which he followed up only two games later with his 100th career win while at GWU on December 5, 2010. Over his time at Gardner-Webb University, Reeves has taken a program that won a combined 13 games over its first three years as an NCAA Division I member (2001-04) prior to his arrival, to its first-ever NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament appearance in 2010-11 and its first-ever WNIT postseason tournament in 2009-10. Gardner-Webb also recorded its first-ever Big South Championship in 2010-11, defeating No. 1 seeded Liberty in the Championship game 67-66, one-year after running through the League in 2009-10 to win the program’s first-ever Big South Regular Season Championship with a stellar 15-1 conference record. The Runnin’ Bulldogs have also received national attention under Reeves, as the 2009-10 team received votes in the ESPN/ USA Today Top-25 Coaches Poll for 15 weeks out of the season, receiving as many as 15 votes overall on three different occasions. In fact, Reeves’ 2009-10 team posted 28 wins overall for the year, which not only set a new school record for the most victories in a single season by a GWU women’s basketball team in its history, but also tied the record for the most wins for a Big South Conference team in the history of the Big South. The 2010-11 team followed with 23 wins overall the next year in 2010-11 to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ its first back-to-back 20 win seasons in the program’s history. His teams have set the new GWU Division I school record for the most wins in a single season four different times, first in 2004-05 with nine wins, again a season later in 2005-06 with 14 wins, once more in 2008-09 with 17 wins and then one more time in 2009-10 with 28 victories. Reeves has taken the Runnin’ Bulldogs to three Big South Championship games (2009, 2010 & 2011) over the last five years and has lead his teams to a total of four Big South Championships overall during his time at both Liberty and Gardner-Webb. Reeves has guided his teams to three Big South Regular Season Championships (1997-98, 1998-99, 2009-10), four Big South Tournament Championships (1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 2010-11), six Big South Tournament Championship game appearances (1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11) and a total of eight conference tournament championship title games overall (6 Big South, 1 Atlantic Sun, 1 Conference USA) as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level since 1990-91. Under his tutelage at Gardner-Webb, Reeves has seen five players surpass the 1,000 career points mark in Dominique Hudson (1,407), Margaret Roundtree (1,337), Sequenta Blackman (1,195), Monique Hudson (1,147) and Shameka Smith (1,136), while six student-athletes have hauled in over 500 career rebounds in Smith (992), Roundtree (789), Brittany Harmon (725), Catrina Green (686), LaTroya Pope (656) and Crissy Guzman (559). Reeves has coached seven Big South All-Conference selections, two Big South All-Freshman honorees, and seven Big South All-Tournament recipients since the Runnin’ Bulldogs joined the Conference in 2008-09, as well as the 2009-10 Big South Women’s Basketball Player of the Year in Margaret Roundtree.

2012-13 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON REVIEW

The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team had one of the largest turn-a-rounds in terms of overall wins this season, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs posted 13 victories in 2012-13, an improvement of nine wins from the previous season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs not only improved on its record from the 201112 season, but head coach Rick Reeves’ squad was also relevant nationally in a number of statistical categories all season long. GWU posted an overall 13-18 record on the season and went 5-13 in Big South Conference play to finish ninth in the Big South Conference Regular season standings. The Runnin’ Bulldogs went on to win its Big South Championship Tournament quarterfinals game over No. 8 Coastal Carolina, 6460, to advance to the semifinals against the No. 1 Liberty Lady Flames, who defeated GWU 78-61 to end the season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb finished ranked in the top-15 nationally in field goal percentage defense, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs held its opponents to only 34.5 percent shooing on the season, and in the top-25 with a plus 6.7 advantage in rebound margin on the year. For the season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs, which had no active seniors on the roster and a total of nine underclassmen suit up in at least 17 contests on the year, posted a number of top-five team single season records in most games played (31), lowest opponent scoring average (58.1 points per game), highest three-point field goal percentage (30.9 percent), highest rebounding average (44.9 per game) and highest steals average (9.5 per game). Individually, freshman Candace Brown, who led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with an average of 9.9 points per game in Big South Conference play, was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team, while sophomore forward Chariah Harris earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team. Junior Jasmine Dale, who was ranked in the top-10 nationally in three-point field goal percentage for most of the season, was second in the conference at 42.6 percent behind the arc and climbed into second-place overall in GWU’s Division I record books with 145 career made three-pointers. Dale also led the team in scoring with an average of 10.4 points per game, despite missing seven games due to an injury, while fellow junior Catrina Green was right on her heels with her average of 10.2 points per game. Green, who surpassed the 500 career rebound mark midway through the season, averaged 9.4 rebounds per game, which ranked fourth in the Big South Conference overall, and jumped into the top-five in GWU’s Division I career record books in rebounds (686), offensive rebounds (323) and in blocked shots (115). Sophomores Jessica Heilig and Mayhana Dunovant also reached career marks during the year, as Heilig topped both the 400 career points and 300 career rebounds mark, while Dunovant exceeded the 100 career assists mark midway through the season. Coach Reeves also reached another career milestone, as Gardner-Webb’s 55-38 home win over Presbyterian on February 7th proved to be the 400th win of his career, putting him in a small group of coaches to reach that mark at the NCAA Division I intercollegiate level.

2012-13 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON REVIEW

The Runnin’ Bulldogs started the season off with three straight home wins over Lipscomb, Tennessee Temple and Montreat College to start the year off at 3-0 overall heading into its first road game of the year. GWU dropped each of its first two road games, back-toback losses at UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State, before returning home after the Thanksgiving break to post a 76-41 win over Asbury to improve to 4-2 overall on the season. After Gardner-Webb dropped three straight games, all at home to Coastal Carolina, Longwood and Davidson, Coach Reeves’ squad bounced back to post a road win at Wofford, a home victory over N.C. Central and another road win at Kennesaw State to finish the 2012 calendar year out at 7-5 overall. Having already suffered a Big South Conference loss to Coastal Carolina in its conference opener back on December 1st, GWU jumped into its full conference schedule in the new year with five straight losses to fall to 0-6 before picking up its first conference win of the year at Asheville, 58-45, on January 19th. Following the win over the Bulldogs, Gardner-Webb struggled to score in a road loss at Presbyterian College, yet bounced back to record three straight wins over Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville and a home win over the Blue Hose of PC to move to 4-7 in the Big South. However, another three game losing streak, which included losses versus Charleston Southern and at both Campbell and Coastal Carolina, would set the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ bid to climb into the top half of the regular season conference standings back and caused Gardner-Webb to step back and regroup with four games left in the regular season. A home win over High Point ended the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ losing skid at three, however, Gardner-Webb struggled down the stretch, dropping the final three games of the season to Liberty, Winthrop and Radford to finish the regular season slate at 12-17 overall and ninth in the Big South standings at 5-13 in conference play. With the No. 9 seed, the Runnin’ Bulldogs drew the host institution in No. 8 Coastal Carolina in the first round of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women’s Basketball Championship in Conway, S.C. GWU went on to defeat the home team, 64-60, to advance to the semifinals against No. 1 Liberty. In the semifinals, the Runnin’ Bulldogs fell behind early and were unable to overcome a hot-shooting Liberty team that defeated Gardner-Webb 78-61 to end the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season. Despite the semifinal loss, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ future looks bright for Coach Reeves’ and his squad, as the entire active roster returns with yet another year of experience under their belts, while the addition of three highly touted signees in Christina McQueen (Findlay, Ohio), Kiera Currie (Romeoville, Illinois) and Tierra Huntsman (Connersville, Indiana) will bring even more talent and depth to a team that made huge strides throughout the 2012-13 season.

GARDNER-WEBB 1,000 POINTS CLUB

1,000 POINTS CLUB

Throughout Gardner-Webb’s illustrious history, 16 women have reached a milestone that not many do - scoring 1,000 career points. Teammates Susan Bolt Briggs and Carolyn Dewberry were the first to score 1,000 points during their time in Boiling Springs. From 19881992, Fredia Lawrence lit up the scoreboard, setting the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ all-time scoring record at 2,201 points. Since the move to NCAA Division I, Margaret Roundtree netted the most points for GWU, tallying 1,337 in her stellar career. Under head coach Rick Reeves, five players have joined the 1,000 point club. Sequenta Blackman tallied over 1,000 points for her career. Blackman, who graduated in May 2006, finished her career as the 11th-most productive scorer in Runnin’ Bulldogs’ history with 1,195 points. On Jan. 25, 2007, senior Shameka Smith netted her 1,000th career point. The Bessemer City, N.C., native finished with 1,136 points, which at the time was good enough for 12th on the GWU all-time list. In the 2009-10 season, Gardner-Webb’s Margaret Roundtree scored her 1,000 point en route to finishing her career with 1,337 points, placing her in sixth-place all-time and surpassing Casey Collins as the Runnin’ Bulldogs Division I career scoring leader. On November 22, 2010, Dominique Hudson became the 15th member of the 1,000 point club, scoring points 999 and 1,000 on back-to-back made free throws. Only months later on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, Monique Hudson tallied her 1,000 career point, becoming only the 16th player in GWU history to accomplish that feat. With both Dominique and Monique Hudson both scoring 1,000 career points, the duo became only the fifth set of siblings to both score over 1,000 career points in Big South history and only the second set to do it in the same season.

GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC TRAINING

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Dr. Heather Hartsell and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 22 varsity sports. Kevin Jones, the Director of Athletic Training, and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the School of Preventative and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY

History

Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education. In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

DR. A. FRANK BONNER

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT * NINTH YEAR

Born in Durham, North Carolina, A. Frank Bonner grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. The son of Francis Wesley Bonner (deceased) and Nilaouise Carnes Bonner, he was raised in a college environment, almost literally in the shadows of the campus of Furman University (Greenville, S.C). His father retired from Furman as Vice President and Provost, having served Furman for over thirty years as professor and, eventually, as chief academic officer. Frank’s parents instilled in him the values he still holds dear. To this day, his father is his model for everything that a teacher, academic leader, and university administrator should be. Frank Bonner graduated in 1969 from Furman with a B.A. degree in English. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift. In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs. In 1987, Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1. Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), serving on more than thirty accreditation committees, most of those as the committee chair. He is a member of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees and serves on the Compliance and Reports Committee. He has also served on the nominating committee for the Commission on Colleges and has chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner is currently Vice President of the Big South Conference, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous organizations. He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel. Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher. They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have six grandchildren.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS

CHUCK BURCH

VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS * 17TH YEAR

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 17th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 32nd year overall in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-theboard improvements in facilities and the addition of seven new sports since arriving in 1997 with the most recent being the addition of women’s lacrosse in 2014-15. Burch is also responsible for continued

improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last six academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ in 2006-2007. In 2009-10 the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program won their first-ever Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and made an appearance in their first-ever postseason appearance in the WNIT. The following year in 2010-11, the GWU women’s basketball team won the school’s second Big South Conference Championship, the first in women’s basketball, and punched their ticket to their first-ever NCAA National Championship Tournament. In 2012-13, the Gardner-Webb men’s basketball team won 21 games overall, the most in a single-season in the program’s Division I history, and hosted a postseason first round game in the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament (CIT). Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and currently serves as the Associate Provost for Professional and Graduate Studies at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, Danielle, a recent graduate of Brevard College (N.C.), and Amy a sophomore soccer player at High Point University.
