2013 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW
One Goal. One Goal is the mantra of the Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team as the Runnin’ Bulldogs look to become the 2013 Big South Conference Men’s Soccer Champions. Less than two full years removed from making the 2011 Big South Men’s Soccer Championship match, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to grow from its challenging experiences in a tough 2012 season that not only saw four wins overall, but also saw the Runnin’ Bulldogs play a program high five nationally ranked top-25 teams throughout the year. With the hardships of the 2012 season, head coach Tony Setzer and his squad will look to grow from those occurrences and start anew in 2013 with its sights set on the conference prize.

2013 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW
FORWARDS The Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to improve in the front third in 2013, as GWU totaled only 13 goals all season long in 2012. Despite the low scoring output last season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs return five players that accounted for at least one goal each last year headlined by returners Satoshi Tatsumi, Denzel Clarke, Craig Swaby and C.J. Moore. The quadrant combined for four goals and three assists in 2012, but will be asked to provide a more consistent attack in 2013. The GWU attack will also see a handful of newcomers in 2013, as sophomore Ali AlGashamy, who sat out last season, leads a group, which includes Colton Houston, Dustin Peyton, Brandon Johnston and Ben Weathers, that will bring both high energy and effort to the Runnin’ Bulldog offense. MIDFIELDERS Having to replace a four-year starter in the midfield for the second straight season, this time in John Sargent, Coach Setzer’s staff will look to a combination of returners and newcomers to help establish the middle of the field for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Returning are juniors Kevin Comvalius and Riley Shelton, along with sophomores Brooks Asger, Jake Kennedy, Moore and Swaby, who all have seen time on the pitch during crucial matches over each of the last two seasons. The newcomers in the midfield include experienced players in Patrick Gürser, Arjun Jung and Brad Minor, who all transferred into the GWU program, as well as a highly talented group of freshmen in Iman Mafi, Sami Jilla, Hunter Haynes and Weathers.

2013 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW
DEFENSE The 2013 season will be the first without Jon Ole Reinhardsen anchoring the defensive backline since the 2008 season, yet the GWU defense is the most experienced unit for Coach Setzer and his staff this season. Experienced returners in seniors Marius Hammersmark and Jonas Nader, as well as two-year starters in Matt Bogart and Eric Yeager will lead the backline for GWU in 2013, while depth at the position will come from sophomores Kennedy, Bryce Wells and Blake Svendsen. Newcomers Barth Mouafo, Alejandro Rivillas, Ben Hyman, Adam Stephens and Logan Walker will also look to compete for playing time immediately for GardnerWebb this season on the defensive backline. GOALKEEPERS A new face will be in goal for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2013, whether it is a returner such as Colin Ashley, Tristan Lain or Nathan Cook, or newcomer Matthew Swan, as the position is wide open heading into the season.

2013 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW SCHEDULE Another challenging season awaits the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2013, as Coach Setzer’s squad will again compete in the Big South/SoCon Challenge, as well as take part in nonconference matches versus Clemson, N.C. State, Furman, USC Upstate and Mercer. After a trio of exhibition contests versus UNC Greensboro, Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will open up the 2013 regular season with contests versus Wofford and at Georgia Southern as part of the Big South/SoCon Challenge on August 30th and September 1st. Gardner-Webb will then return home to host USC Upstate on September 4th, before hitting the road for its annual battle at Clemson on September 8th. The Big South Conference slate will kick-off at home versus Liberty on September 14th, which will be followed by three straight road contests at Mercer (September 18th), at Furman (September 23rd) and at Coastal Carolina (September 28th). The Runnin’ Bulldogs will open up the month of October with a home bout versus N.C. State on October 1st, before jumping back into conference play with a road match at Radford (October 5th), a home contest versus Longwood (October 12th), and back-to-back matches on the road at Presbyterian (October 15th) and at VMI (October 19th). After a home contest versus UNC Asheville on October 23rd, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will hit the road one final time during the regular season with a Big South Conference showdown at Campbell on October 26th. Gardner-Webb will wrap up its 2013 regular season slate with back-to-back home matches versus conference foes Winthrop (October 30th) and High Point (November 2nd).

TONY SETZER HEAD COACH 26TH SEASON
Head Men’s Soccer Coach Tony Setzer, one of the pillars of the Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer program during his career in Boiling Springs, N.C., is entering his 26th season as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ head coach. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ career leader in wins with 176, Setzer, the face of GWU Men’s Soccer, has spent his entire 25-year collegiate career as a head coach in Boiling Springs, N.C. and has spearheaded the growth of soccer at Gardner-Webb University and throughout Cleveland County. Setzer has been vital in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ success over a number of transitions, as GWU moved from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1993-94, transitioned to the NCAA Division I level in 2000-01, moved into the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2002-03 and then most recently moved into the Big South Conference in 2008-09. Over the last few years, Setzer’s teams have posted a number of key wins as the 2011 Runnin’ Bulldog squad defeated High Point for the first time in the program’s history, posted a win at Patchin Field and VMI for the first-time ever and defeated a nationally ranked opponent in No. 20 VCU at the UAB “Soccer For a Cure” Classic, while the 2009 team recorded GWU’s firstever win over an ACC school with a 1-0 win at Clemson in the season opener. The 2009 Runnin’ Bulldogs’ also had wins over Jacksonville and Liberty, both of which were only the second ever wins over those two teams in the program’s history. Setzer’s 2011 team posted a second-place finish in the Big South Regular Season standings and advanced all the way to the Championship game in the Big South Conference Championship Tournament for the first time since joining the League in 2008. His 2006 team reeled off a 5-1-1 A-Sun record and earned the No. 2 spot at the conference championship tournament. Playing at Stetson University, his squad downed the host squad by a 2-1 score in the Championship game, earning the school’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Playing at UAB in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup in 2006, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ scored a 1-1 tie and moved on to the second round due to a 3-1 margin in penalty kicks after the two teams’ played two scoreless overtime periods. Tough schedules are nothing new to Setzer or his team, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs are noted for refusing to shy away from challenges. Over the past 10 seasons, Gardner-Webb has played 12 games against opponents ranked in the top-15 nationally, including top-ranked North Carolina in 2012 and top-ranked Wake Forest in 2002. Success is no stranger to Setzer either. In 1998, at the Division II level, Setzer directed the Runnin’ Bulldogs to their first national top-25 ranking, as GWU reached as high as No. 21 in the Division II poll behind a balanced attack and strong defense. Over his 25 years at GWU, Setzer has coached the top goalkeeper and three scorers in Gardner-Webb history, both single-season and career, and has tutored an impressive 16 All-Americans during his tenure - including 11 Academic All-Americans. He has also coached the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year in Boris Gatzky, two South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year honorees in Jurgen Wagner in 1998 and Vince Bueno in 1996, two South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year winners in Jerome Lee Yaw in 1995 and Dennis Puckerin in 1990 and a two-time South Atlantic Conference President’s Award (Best Male Athlete) winner in Edwin Odugba, who won the award in 1994 and 1995 as the league’s top male student-athlete, making him the only Gardner-Webb performer, in any sport, to earn the honor twice. The 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year and the 1990 South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year has helped tutor 15 Big South All-Conference honorees since Gardner-Webb joined the League in 2008 and nine Atlantic Sun All-Conference selections from 2002-07, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs have had at least one studentathlete named to an all-conference team in each of the program’s last 10 years. During Gardner-Webb’s time in the South Atlantic Conference, Setzer developed 28 All-Conference performers and five All-South Region choices. Edwin Odugba (1994 and 1995) and Lee Yaw were both named South Atlantic Conference First Union Scholar-Athlete of the Year during their careers, also earning All-Conference honors during those seasons. Setzer has also coached one Big South Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Trent Kozman (2009), one ESPN The Magazine (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III honoree Todd Ulrich (2003), 11 Academic AllAmericans, five NSCAA/adidas Scholar-Athlete All-South selections and numerous Big South and Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team honorees.

TYLER KETTERING ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH 5TH SEASON (6TH SEASON OVERALL) Former Gardner-Webb standout and career saves leader Tyler Kettering begins his fifth year as the Associate Head Coach for the Gardner-Webb men’s soccer program in 2013. Kettering, who served as an Assistant Coach in 2007, serves as the recruiting coordinator and contact for the Runnin’ Bulldogs men’s soccer program, as well as running day-to-day team operations along with developing and implementing practice sessions and overseeing the goalkeeper training throughout the season. During his time on the sidelines for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, GWU has posted a number of key wins including its first-ever win over High Point in 2011, its first-ever win on the road at Patchin Field against VMI also in 2011 and knocked off a nationally ranked opponent in No. 20 VCU at the UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also posted its best regular season conference finish since joining the Big South in 2008 with its second-place finish and 5-3-1 conference record in 2011, the same year that the Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team came up just one match short of winning the program’s second conference championship and first-ever Big South Championship, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season came to an end with a loss to Liberty in the conference championship title game. Under the tutelage of Kettering, the goalkeepers, along with the GWU defense, have been solid over the last few years, totaling 23 shutouts overall since 2009. Individually, goalkeeper Scott Krotee’s 107 saves on the 2012 season was not only a season-high, but was also the most saves in a single-season by a GWU goalkeeper since Kettering himself totaled 116 saves back in 2006. Krotee’s 1.10 goals against average in 2011 ranks second overall in GWU men’s soccer single-season history, while his six shutouts that season placed him in a tie for third with Kettering (2006) and Greg Clark (1990) in GWU history for the most shutouts in a single-season. In 2010, Kettering helped tutor first-year GWU player and junior transfer Adam Garcia to eight wins overall in the net for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, while his seven shutouts was the second for shutouts in a single season. Garcia posted a 1.54 goals against average in 2010, which also ranks fourth for keepers’ in GWU’s single-season history. Kettering, who manned the goal for the Runnin’ Bulldogs from 2003-06, was a two-time Atlantic Sun All-Conference selection and earned a spot on the 2003 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshmen Team. The Xenia, Ohio native, who holds both the Atlantic Sun Conference and the GWU records in career saves with 446, led the nation in saves in both 2004 and 2006. Kettering finished his career ranked second in the GWU career record books with 15 career shutouts, second in single-season shutouts with six in 2006, third in singleseason goals against average with an average of 1.25 in 2005 and fourth in single season saves with 134. After his playing days at Gardner-Webb, Kettering went on to play professionally with both the Wilmington Hammerheads (2006-07) and the Chicago Fire of the MLS (2008-09). Kettering married the former Ali Labig on December 29, 2007. The couple resides in Boiling Springs with their son Logan, who is four-years old, and daughter Karis, who was born on July 28, 2011.

2012 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON IN REVIEW With high expectations after reaching the Big South Championship match in 2011, the Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team knew that the 2012 season would be one of the toughest it had ever seen and it proved to be one, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs posted a 4-14-2 overall record on the year. GWU, who posted wins over Appalachian State, VMI, UNC Asheville and Presbyterian on the season, went 3-5-2 in Big South Conference play to finish in seventh-place overall in the Big South. The three conference wins marks the fewest for a GWU team since becoming members of the Big South Conference back in 2008 and is the first time that the Runnin’ Bulldogs have not had a conference record .500 or higher as members of the Big South. The challenging 2012 season saw the Runnin’ Bulldogs play a program high five nationally top-25 ranked teams throughout the year - No. 1 North Carolina, No. 20 Furman, No. 23 Dayton, No. 23 High Point and No. 10 Coastal Carolina. GWU also had seven different matches go extra time, whether that was one or two overtimes, the most that a Runnin’ Bulldog team has had in a single season since playing six overtime contests back in 2006. Redshirt-senior defender Jon Ole Reinhardsen, who earned Big South All-Conference Second-Team honors, finished his career at GWU with his fourth straight All-Conference postseason honor, while newcomer Lyssean Thomas was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team and Satoshi Tatsumi earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team. Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Scott Krotee, who posted five shutouts and 107 saves on the year, increased his career shutouts total to 11 overall, placing him in third-place overall in career shutouts in GWU’s history. Krotee’s 189 saves pushes him into the top-10 in GWU’s career record books in career saves, while his career 1.39 goals against average sits atop the GWU record books. Despite missing nine games to due an ankle injury, redshirt-senior forward Taylor Jordan led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with three goals on the season, while only registering eight shots overall. Eight other Runnin’ Bulldog players accounted for at least one goal on the season, while nine different GWU players was credited with at least on assist on the season led by junior Marius Hammersmark’s four helpers. GWU started the season off with a road loss at No. 1 North Carolina, 4-0, only to kick-off its home slate with a 3-0 loss to then No. 20 Furman two days later. After falling to 0-4 on the year with losses to Wofford and Georgia Southern at the Big South/SoCon Challenge in Spartanburg, S.C. in late August and early September, GardnerWebb remained on the road for its next four contests.

2012 MEN’S SOCCER SEASON IN REVIEW On the never-ending road trip, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ upset bid fell short at No. 23 Dayton, as GWU suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to the Flyers, and then turned around two days later to again fall in overtime, this time 1-0 at Cincinnati. GWU snapped its losing streak at five matches, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs opened up conference play with a scoreless draw at Longwood, before falling on the road at N.C. State 2-0 on September 25th. Sitting at 0-8-1 and 0-0-1 in the conference, Gardner-Webb returned home to fall to Radford 6-1, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ first loss to the Highlanders since joining the Big South Conference in 2008. Gardner-Webb regrouped after the tough home loss to post three straight wins over Appalachian State, VMI and at UNC Asheville to improve to 3-9-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Big South play. With the 3-0 start to the month of October, GWU looked to carry the momentum over to the rest of the season, only to come up just short in a 2-1 double overtime loss at No. 23 High Point, suffer a shutout loss at Clemson and then fall 1-0 at home to No. 10 Coastal Carolina over its next three matches. Gardner-Webb would return to the road to fall at Winthrop 2-1 in double overtime and then play Liberty to a scoreless double overtime draw in Lynchburg, Va., the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ seventh overtime match of the year. Looking to assure itself a place in the Big South Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament, GWU picked up a much needed win over Presbyterian on Halloween Night, defeating the Blue Hose 3-0 to seal a spot in the postseason conference tournament. With a 2-0 regular season finale loss to Campbell on Senior Day on November 3rd, the Runnin’ Bulldogs received the seventh seed overall heading into the 2012 Big South Championship Tournament and drew the No. 2 seeded Radford Highlanders. Gardner-Webb traveled up to Radford, Va. for the quarterfinals contest and after playing the Highlanders to a scoreless first 45 minutes of play, the home team posted two goals late in the second half to down the Runnin’ Bulldogs 2-0 and end the season for GWU. While it was a down year for GWU in terms of the wins and losses, the Runnin’ Bulldogs saw a number of young faces record valuable minutes of playing time and experience in 2012, which will be vital as the Runnin’ Bulldogs graduate starters Reinhardsen, John Sargent, Chris Davis, Jordan, as well as key contributors off the bench in Jordan Day, Jaap Elekan and Eric Bowen.

GREENE-HARBISON FIELD
Greene-Harbison Field, which was formerly known as Varsity Field, has received many upgrades since the field’s inception in 1990. During the summer of 2013, the field itself received a face-lift, as brand new retaining walls were built along the corners of the field. In 2011 new fencing was installed which surrounds the game action, giving a stadium-like feel to Greene-Harbison Field. Prior to the 2007 season, a permanent press box was built with a video purch on top for both the home and visiting teams to film the games.

GREENE-HARBISON FIELD
Also prior to the 2007 season, permanent seating was placed at midfield to allow the spectators to be right in the action of the games. Before the start of the 2005 season, Gardner-Webb erected a brand new scoreboard adding to the game experience for all. In 2004, four light standards were installed, allowing the Runnin’ Bulldogs to play home night games for the first time in school history. In 2002, the mobile bench covers were added, offering players from both teams protection from the elements along the sidelines.

GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC TRAINING
An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Dr. Heather Hartsell and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 22 varsity sports. Kevin Jones, the Director of Athletic Training, and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the School of Preventative and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY
History
Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education. In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly novel idea for its time. Today, Gardner-Webb’s GOAL classes are available at 16 centers across North Carolina. The institution officially became Gardner-Webb University in January 1993, and in 2001— four years shy of its centennial—the University began offering its first doctorate (Doctor of Ministry). Today, Gardner-Webb offers a host of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including four doctoral programs in ministry, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, and as of 2012, nursing practice. In 2006, Dr. A. Frank Bonner was inaugurated as Gardner-Webb’s 12th President, ushering in the University’s latest era of remarkable growth. Under Bonner’s leadership, Gardner-Webb has achieved record enrollments, built impressive new buildings like the newly opened Tucker Student Center, and earned national acclaim for academic quality and student achievement. Most important, though, the University has reaffirmed its commitment to the guiding and sustaining principles of faith, service, and leadership, and to preparing graduates for lives of lasting impact, “For God and Humanity.”

GARDNER-WEBB ADMINISTRATION
DR. A. FRANK BONNER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT NINTH YEAR
Born in Durham, North Carolina, A. Frank Bonner grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. The son of Francis Wesley Bonner (deceased) and Nilaouise Carnes Bonner, he was raised in a college environment, almost literally in the shadows of the campus of Furman University (Greenville, S.C). His father retired from Furman as Vice President and Provost, having served Furman for over thirty years as professor and, eventually, as chief academic officer. Frank’s parents instilled in him the values he still holds dear. To this day, his father is his model for everything that a teacher, academic leader, and university administrator should be. Frank Bonner graduated in 1969 from Furman with a B.A. degree in English. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift. In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs. In 1987, Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1. Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), serving on more than thirty accreditation committees, most of those as the committee chair. He is a member of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees and serves on the Compliance and Reports Committee. He has also served on the nominating committee for the Commission on Colleges and has chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner is currently Vice President of the Big South Conference, Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. GARDNER-WEBB ADMINISTRATION
CHUCK BURCH VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS 17TH YEAR
Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 17th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 32nd year overall in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of seven new sports since arriving in 1997 with the most recent being the addition of women’s lacrosse in 2014-15. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last six academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ in 2006-2007. In 2009-10 the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program won their first-ever Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and made an appearance in their first-ever postseason appearance in the WNIT. The following year in 2010-11, the GWU women’s basketball team won the school’s second Big South Conference Championship, the first in women’s basketball, and punched their ticket to their first-ever NCAA National Championship Tournament. In 2012-13, the Gardner-Webb men’s basketball team won 21 games overall, the most in a single-season in the program’s Division I history, and hosted a postseason first round game in the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament (CIT). Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and currently serves as the Associate Provost for Professional and Graduate Studies at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, Danielle, a recent graduate of Brevard College (N.C.), and Amy a sophomore soccer player at High Point University.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, GardnerWebb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifthyear of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.
