2013 PREVIEW
2013 GARDNER-WEBB MURPHY
The Gardner-Webb volleyball team enters its third season under head coach Leo Sayles as a unit - one unit with team chemistry and moving forward together from start to finish throughout the 2013 season. With four starters returning from last season and a total of nine returners from a year ago overall, Coach Sayles and his staff have a lot of experience returning both on the court and in the locker room for the 2013 year. MIDDLE BLOCKERS/HITTERS In the middle at the net stands the most experience for the Runnin’ Bulldogs and perhaps the most depth, as senior returners Tyler Cockrell and Amanda Murphy return to lead a very talented first line of defense and attack for GWU in 2013. Cockrell, who was named to the 2012 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) Volleyball All-State Second-Team, has led the Runnin’ Bulldogs in total blocks, solo blocks and block assists in each of the last two years for GWU. The senior, who led GWU in both kills and blocks in 2012, will look to continue to add to her career total in blocks, as she already holds the record for GWU’s Division I history. Murphy, who played in 100 sets last season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, returns to again form a formidable one-two punch for GWU in the middle this season. Murphy recorded a career-high 141 kills last season to go along with 64 total blocks and will look to improve on those numbers this year, her final one as a Runnin’ Bulldog. Depth in the middle will come from a trio of young players in sophomore Tyra Montour and freshmen Taylor Lillard and Emily Steele. Montour is coming off a freshman season 2012 in which she gained valuable experience behind both Cockrell and Murphy. The sophomore saw the court in 53 sets last season as a true freshman, tallying 65 kills and 28 blocks on the year. Both Lillard and Steele come to Gardner-Webb with very impressive high school and club team resumes, as both have competed on the national level over the last three or four years. Lillard brings an athletic attack to the net, while Steele provides the Runnin’ Bulldogs with another big block in the middle.

OUTSIDE HITTERS On the outside for GWU in 2013, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to senior Erin Anderson to lead a very young core group which includes Montour, Lillard, Steele and fellow freshman Brianna Starr. Anderson had a breakout season in 2012 and will look to carry that success over into 2013, as the Florida native tallied 225 kills on the season to go along with 140 digs and 251 points overall. Along with Anderson, Montour, Lillard and Steele are all capable of sliding from the middle to the outside hitter position, bringing another element to the GWU offense. Starr, who was named to the Under Armour All-American Watch List in her senior season last year in high school, was named to the Prepvolleyball. com Hardest Hitter list in 2012 and brings a huge swing for the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the outside. RIGHT SIDE HITTERS Senior Emily Holte returns for the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the right side in 2013, as last season she stepped up for Coach Sayles and his squad, recording 172 kills and a team-high 31 service aces on the year. Also returning for GWU at the right side hitter position is sophomore Devin Judge, who after battling injuries all season long last season as a freshman, will look to make an impact for the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the court in her second season at GWU. With the departure of four-year starter Carol Solano due to graduation, Judge will be asked to provide depth across the board for the Runnin’ Bulldogs this season. H O LT E

2013 GARDNER-WEBB
FELDMAN
SETTERS Two-year starter Heather Feldman returns for her junior season in 2013 and will once again man the setter position for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Feldman, who started and played in all 111 sets for GWU in 2012, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 1,052 set assists on the season, an average of 9.48 per set, overall. The New York native also was second on the team with 273 digs and third on the team with 21 service aces last season. However, this season the Runnin’ Bulldogs have added depth at the setter position which GWU has lacked over the last four years. Both Judge, who saw some time at the setter position last season as a freshman, and newcomer Kacy O’Connor will back-up Feldman and look to use this season to learn how to both lead and guide the GWU offensive attack for Coach Sayles in the years to come. DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBERO Returning on the back row for GWU in 2013 are sophomores Anna Pashkova and Katie Loftin, both of which saw time on the court for the Runnin’ Bulldogs last season as true freshmen. Pashkova returns to headline the group, as she led the team with 427 digs last season, an average of 3.85 per set. Pashkova also was second on the team with 22 service aces on the year, as she played in all 111 sets for Coach Sayles last year. Beside Pashkova on the back row will be Loftin, as the sophomore returns for her second year with the Runnin’ Bulldogs after missing much of the early part of last season with an injury. The Tennessee native came on strong toward the end of the year for GWU, as she recorded 50 digs overall on the year. Depth at the defensive spots will come from O’Connor, as the freshman is a pure athlete, earning all-conference honors in volleyball, basketball and softball in high school.

WEBB SEASON preview
2013 SCHEDULE Once again the schedule will be a challenging one for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2013, as Coach Sayles’ squad will compete in three different tournaments and will play in five different states. On top of a very tough Big South Conference schedule, which includes road contests at Liberty, UNC Asheville, Radford, Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, Winthrop and Presbyterian, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will also play on the road at Charlotte, The Citadel and South Carolina State in non-conference action. GWU will compete in three tournaments at the beginning of the 2013 season – the Belmont Invitational, the Embassy Suites 2013 Fullerton Classic and the Elon Phoenix Classic – which will included matches versus Miami (Ohio), Belmont, Memphis, Wake Forest, William & Mary, Kent State, Cal State Fullerton, Elon, East Carolina and N.C. Central. Along with all of the tournament and non-conference road bouts, GWU’s 11-home matches includes bouts versus regional foes Montreat,
Western Carolina, Brevard, Davidson and conference matches versus Presbyterian, Winthrop, Liberty, High Point, UNC Asheville, Campbell and Radford.

Leo Sayles enters his third season as the head coach of the Gardner-Webb volleyball team, officially taking over the reigns of the program in February 2011. Sayles, who has over 20 years of experience as a volleyball coach at the high school, club and college level, came to Boiling Springs, N.C. after coaching seven seasons at Bryan College in Tennessee, where he guided the Lady Lions from a mid-level conference team to a conference powerhouse. In his first two seasons at Gardner-Webb, his teams have shown constant improvement, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ posted five conference wins in 2011, tying the most conference wins in a single season for a GWU team in the program’s 13-year NCAA Division I history. GWU has also posted a number of firsts in the program’s history under Sayles, which includes the first-ever win over the Liberty Lady Flames and the first-ever conference win over High Point both coming in 2011. Coach Sayles has already seen his Runnin’ Bulldog teams set new team single-season records, individual records and career marks in only his first two years at the helm of the program, as his 2011 squad set a new GWU Division I single-season record in total blocks with 236 on the season and in block assists with 308 overall on the year. GWU’s total blocks per set average of 2.05 in 2011 was the second highest in a single season in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Division I history, while their 82 solo blocks and their 11.05 assists per set both rank third overall in GWU’s DI single-season record books. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also received national recognition in 2011, as their 1.53 aces per set average placed 29th overall in the nation among the 322 NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Gardner-Webb followed up its 2011 record setting season at the net with 258 block assists, which ranks third in GWU’s DI record book for a single-season, and placed fourth in the single-season archives in total blocks with 206, in solo blocks with 77 and in total blocks per set at 1.86 in 2012. While at Gardner-Webb, Sayles has seen a number of individuals set new single-season marks on the court, as Laura Wilcox set a new GWU Division I single-season record in 2011 with a .348 hitting percentage with a minimum of 100 kills, which also ranked 46th nationally among all NCAA Division I institutions, while Tyler Cockrell set a new GWU Division I single-season record with 150 total blocks and 108 block assists on the year in 2011. Cockrell’s 1.35 blocks per set average was also not only a new single-season record for Gardner-Webb, but it also placed her 21st overall in the nation. Wilcox, Evan Moffitt and Cockrell have all set career marks under Coach Sayles, as Wilcox recorded her 1,000th career kill and her 200th career block in 2011, while Moffitt tallied her 1,000th career dig midway through the 2011 campaign. Wilcox also went on to set a new GWU Division I career record in 2011 with 229 total blocks overall, surpassing the previous record of 228 set by current assistant coach Bethany Martin. However, Cockrell would go on to exceed Wilcox’s mark of 229 later in the season, as she recently finished her junior season in 2012 with a GWU’s Division I record of 345 career blocks. Sayles has had a number of Runnin’ Bulldogs earn postseason recognition, as Wilcox earned a spot on the Big South All-Conference Second-Team for a third-time in four years in 2011, while Moffitt was tabbed the 2011 Big South Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the third straight season in 2011. Setter Heather Feldman received Big South All-Freshman Team honors and was the lone freshman to be named to the North Carolina College Sports Information Association University All-State Volleyball Team in 2011, while also earning Big South All-Academic Team accolades in 2012.

Martin aids head coach Leo Sayles in the everyday operations of the Gardner-Webb volleyball program, including areas such as recruiting, practices, scouting, match planning, team travel and off-season workouts. In her first two seasons on the sidelines of her alma mater, GWU has shown constant improvement, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ posted five conference wins in 2011, tying the most conference wins in a single season for a GWU team in the program’s 13-year NCAA Division I history. Working extensively with both the middle blockers and right side hitters, Martin has seen a number of new team single-season records, individual records and career marks set. The 2011 team set a new GWU Division I single-season record in total blocks with 236 on the season and in block assists with 308 overall on the year. GWU’s total blocks per set average of 2.05 in 2011 was the second highest in a single-season in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Division I history, while their 82 solo blocks and their 11.05 assists per set both rank third overall in GWU’s DI single-season record books. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also received national recognition in 2011, as their 1.53 aces per set average placed 29th overall in the nation among the 322 NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Cockrell’s 1.35 blocks per set average was also not only a new single-season record for Gardner-Webb, but it also placed her 21st overall in the nation. Both Wilcox and Cockrell have all set career marks under Martin’s guidance, as Wilcox recorded her 1,000th career kill and her 200th career block in 2011, and also went on to set a new GWU Division I career record in 2011 with 229 total blocks overall, surpassing the previous record of 228 recorded by Martin herself. 2012 GARDNER-WEBB
FELDMAN
With nine new faces and a returning core of three seniors, four juniors and a sophomore, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team set high expectations and looked to continue both its growth and improvement in the Runinn’ Bulldogs’ second season under head coach Leo Sayles in 2012. However, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team got off to a slow start and struggled down the stretch of the regular season to finish the year at 9-22 overall and 4-10 in Big South Conference play. Sophomore setter Heather Feldman, who was named to the Big South All-Academic Team, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 1,052 assists on the year and was second in digs with 273, third in service aces with 21 and fourth in total blocks with 40. Junior middle blocker Tyler Cockrell, who landed a spot on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Second-Team, led GWU with a total of 354 points on the season, as she was tops on the team with 279 kills, a .279 attack percentage, and 90 total blocks. Freshman libero Anna Pashkova made an impact from the very start of her career at GWU on the season, as she led the team with 427 digs overall and was second on the team in both service aces with 22 and set COCKRELL

assists with 51. After starting the season off at 1-10, which included losses at Ball State, versus Illinois State, versus VCU, at Davidson, at Elon, against Alabama and at home versus Wofford, Delaware State and UM-Kansas City, the Runnin’ Bulldogs refused to quit, battling back to win six of its next nine matches, including posting a three-match winning streak midway through September. Those six midseason wins came against North Carolina A&T, versus Tennessee Tech, versus Alcorn State, and at home against Asheville, USC Upstate and Radford, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs improved to 7-13 overall and 2-1 in Big South play with the lone conference loss coming at home to the eventual 2012 Big South Champions in the Liberty Lady Flames. However, after completing the regular season series sweep of Asheville with a 3-1 road win at the Justice Center in the middle of October, the Runnin’ Bulldogs struggled down the final stretch of the season, dropping seven of its final eight contests, all of which were in conference play, and went 2-9 in the final two months of the season to miss out on the 2012 Big South Volleyball Conference Championship Tournament.

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Dr. Heather Hartsell and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 22 varsity sports. Kevin Jones, the Director of Athletic Training, and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the School of Preventative and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

History
75
UNIVERSITY
Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, GardnerWebb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education.

Dr. A. Frank Bonner University President * Ninth Year Born in Durham, North Carolina, A. Frank Bonner grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. The son of Francis Wesley Bonner (deceased) and Nilaouise Carnes Bonner, he was raised in a college environment, almost literally in the shadows of the campus of Furman University (Greenville, S.C). His father retired from Furman as Vice President and Provost, having served Furman for over thirty years as professor and, eventually, as chief academic officer. Frank’s parents instilled in him the values he still holds dear. To this day, his father is his model for everything that a teacher, academic leader, and university administrator should be. Frank Bonner graduated in 1969 from Furman with a B.A. degree in English. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. big south
Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -- for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic AllAmericans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.
