A B O U T G A R D N E R-W E B B Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of GardnerWebb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of welldocumented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-tofaculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number nearly 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student.

A D M I N I S T R AT I O N Dr. Frank Bonner President

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fifth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

Chuck Burch VP for Athletics

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU's move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men's swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch's arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb's final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs' student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men's and women's combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb's men's soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University; Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

Rusty Stroupe (553-430, 197-197 at GWU) has made a tremendous impact on the baseball program, the overall campus and the community since joining the Gardner-Webb family prior to the 2003 season. The Cherryville, N.C., native has taken the ‘Dogs new heights at the NCAA Division I level. Stroupe, who has 19 years of college head coaching experience under his belt, directed Gardner-Webb to a fifth-place finish in its first year in the Big South Conference, setting a host of offensive records along the way – including batting average (.327) and home runs (65) last season. Three players earned All-Big South honors as well. Stroupe led GWU to a magical run at the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, taking the fourth-seeded Diamond ‘Dogs all the way to the Championship Game – before GWU fell in 15 innings to top-seed Lipscomb in the school's final season in that league. Gardner-Webb has shown under Stroupe that it can compete with the best, and with style. The Runnin' Bulldogs ran to a school-record 122 stolen bases in 2008, breaking the record of 119 set just one year earlier in 2007. GWU also made a late run that gave the 'Dogs the No. 5 seed at the 2007 ASun Tournament, and posted a pair of non-conference wins at SEC member Georgia – marking the fourth time in six games against Georgia that GWU has prevailed under Stroupe's watchful eye. In 2006, Stroupe led a very young team to 24 wins, which included early victories over Missouri Valley Conference champ Evansville and ACC member Maryland. Stroupe also saw fifth-year senior Blake Lalli sign with the Chicago Cubs prior the June, 2006, draft as a free agent – marking the fifth Diamond 'Dog under Stroupe's watch to ink a deal with a major league organization. In 2005, Gardner-Webb finished in a tie for fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference – the third year in a row that GWU had finished at least fifth in the powerful league. GWU also picked up its first A-Sun Tournament win, upsetting No. 1 seed Troy in the opening round. Ace Zach Ward became the highest drafted player in GWU baseball history – going in the third round of June's MLB Amateur Draft, capping a record-setting career in Boiling Springs. Ward signed with the Reds, marking the fourth player to sign a

contract with a Major League club since 2003 – Stroupe's first season with the program. Catcher Jay McConnell was named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America. In 2004, Stroupe’s Bulldogs posted a 19-11 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference, finishing only one game out of a tie for second place in one of the country’s most competitive leagues. A No. 4 seed in the A-Sun Tournament followed, capping off a 32-25 overall campaign – which included two wins over No. 14 Florida Atlantic in mid-March. Seniors Jeff Long (Atlanta Braves, 12th Round) and Joey Siak (St. Louis Cardinals, FA) continued their careers on the professional level after the 2004 season was completed. Stroupe led his first set of Bulldogs to a 33-23 record in 2003, including an 18-15 mark in the A-Sun. In the process, the Bulldogs qualified for the ASun Tournament, which takes the top six of 12 total teams from the regular season standings. Ward was also named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, becoming the first Gardner-Webb player so honored. During the Bulldogs’ 33-win trek through the 2003 season, Stroupe led the squad to a pair of wins over SEC foe Georgia, as well as wins over preseason top-25 squads UCF (2), Florida Atlantic (1) and Stetson (1). GWU rose to as high as No. 53 in the Division I RPI – before finishing the season with a rating of 79 (out of 287 Division I teams). Prior to joining the GWU program in May, 2002, Stroupe started the baseball program at Lander in 1997, and directed the Division II Senators to a spot in the national top-25 in each of his five seasons at the helm while picking up 133 wins. In 1999, the Senators posted a 33-15 record and climbed as high as No. 12 in the NCAA Division II national poll. He was named North Carolina College Baseball Coach of the Year at Brevard in 1994, helping the Tornadoes to a 43-15 record, a No. 13 national ranking and an appearance in the NJCAA junior college World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. His 1996 Brevard team set a school record with 46 wins and was ranked as high as fourth nationally in the NJCAA Division I poll. He and his wife, Karen, have three sons – Will (17), Cal (14) and J.T. (10).

Assistant coach Kent Cox is in his fourth season with the GardnerWebb program, and is quickly establishing himself as one a major part of the Bulldogs' success. Cox will continue to work with the Bulldog hitters and infielders, in addition to serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. This past season, Gardner-Webb set new school records for season batting average (.327) and home runs (65), just one season after posting the most total bases (999) in GWU history. Three of Cox's hitters, Daniel Cooke, Justin Loyd and Brock Miller, each earned All-Big South Conference honors in 2009, with Loyd becoming the first Diamond 'Dog to bat .400 since the program's move to NCAA Division I. Prior to joining the GWU family, Cox spent the four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Campbell University, in Buies Creek, N.C. During that span, the Camels experienced a burst in their offensive output, with several players ranking among the best in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Under Cox’s guidance in 2006, first baseman Mike Priest led the A-Sun in batting with a .402 average, runs scored (62), total bases (151) and slugging percentage (.674) – and was named Academic All-America for the second season in a row. “When we had a position available, one of the first names I thought of was Kent Cox,” said GWU head coach Rusty Stroupe. “We’ve known each other for a long time, and share many of the same philosophies – on and off the field. Kent is well respected in and around college baseball, and is an excellent recruiter in addition to his on-field coaching ability." Cox played for the Camels from 1993-1996, earning Academic AllAmerica honors himself in 1995. A three-team All-Conference choice on the diamond and a three-time Academic All-District selection, Cox finished as Campbell’s all-time leader in hits (269) and seventh with a .348 career batting average. He ranks in the top-10 in Campbell history in runs (147), steals (32), doubles (39) and total bases (341). Cox is also the toughest player in Campbell history to strike out, fanning just once every 16.8 times at the plate. Cox is also a veteran broadcaster, having served Campbell as a television analyst for men’s basketball games and as the play-by-play voice for Camels’ athletics for two seasons. A native of Wilmington, N.C., Cox played prep baseball at Hoggard (N.C.) High and attended St. Andrews College before transferring and playing his four seasons on the diamond at Campbell. In addition to his most recent coaching experience at Campbell, Cox served as a volunteer coach with the Camels in 2001, after spending two years on the staff at NAIA Montreat (N.C.) College.

Assistant coach Jason Burke is in his third season with the GardnerWebb University program. Burke will work with the Bulldogs' pitching staff in 2009, and brings a wealth of knowledge in that area to the club. As a recruiter, his prowess has been well documented since arriving in Boiling Springs, with the current freshman class of pitchers among the best Gardner-Webb has ever signed. His watchful eye helped current ace Brett Stackhouse develop from a quality reliever to a Friday-night starter and a preseason 2010 All-Big South Conference choice by Rivals. com Prior to joining the Gardner-Webb family, the Duncan, S.C., native spent the two seasons as an assistant coach at Wofford College – where he helped lead the Terriers to the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament title and an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Regional at the University of South Carolina. Burke served as head coach in 2008 for the Hornell Dodgers of the New York Collegiate League, and was named Southern Collegiate Baseball League Coach of the Year in 2006 after directing the Morganton (N.C.) Aggies to the summer circuit’s championship. The Byrnes (S.C.) High graduate also has wooden-bat coaching experience with the Carolina Chaos (SCBL), and has served in a variety of coaching roles on the high school and American Legion levels. Burke began his college playing career at Lander (S.C.) under current GWU head coach Rusty Stroupe. He finished that career at Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University, where he graduated in 2004. He recently completed a graduate degree at Gardner-Webb in Sport Science and Pedagogy.

Student assistant coach Michael Lewis is in his first season on the Diamond 'Dog staff, after finishing a two-year career on the mound for Gardner-Webb. Lewis will assist mainly with the Gardner-Webb pitching staff this season, while also coaching first base. The Lexington, S.C., native finished with a 4-3 overall record in 28 appearances as a Diamond 'Dog, emerging as a valuable midweek starter last season. He started seven games as a senior in 2009, forging a 3-2 ledger with 19 strikeouts in 38.1 innings of work. As a junior, Lewis was 1-1 with a solid 2.87 ERA in 15 total appearances (15.2 innings) out of the bullpen. Prior to enrolling at Gardner-Webb, Lewis spent two seasons on the mound at Florence-Darlington Tech. He played prep baseball at Lexington (S.C.) High.

AT H L E T I C T R A I N I N G An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 20 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAATE, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certification to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

The Gardner-Webb University Athletic Training Program is appreciative of the support provided by the following individuals, who play a vital role in the success of the student-athlete’s participation in Gardner-Webb’s 21 varsity sports.

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb enters its second season in the Big South Conference with a number of question marks, based primarily on the loss of an ultra-talented senior class that produced exceptionally well at the plate in 2009. With seven position starters gone from last year's fifth-place squad (25-25 overall), the Big South head coaches tabbed the Diamond 'Dogs eighth in their preseason tabulation. SEBaseball. com, part of the Rivals network, also selected Gardner-Webb eighth in its preseason poll, but placed redshirt senior catcher Ty Boyles (.309, 15 HR, 45 RBI) on its preseason first-team AllBig South squad. Senior third baseman/outfielder Kurt Fulginiti (.370, 8 HR, 39 RBI) and junior LHP Brett Stackhouse (5-6, 4.27 ERA) earned second-team All-Big South honors from the website. That trio will be part of a small nucleus of experienced talent returning for Coach Rusty Stroupe, but far from the only firepower available for the Diamond ‘Dogs in 2010. The eighth-place prediction mirrors that of the league’s head coaches, and doesn’t take into account several new faces who should make quite a splash in the Big South Conference this season. Former high school All-American Zeke Blanton, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound transfer from North Carolina, is capable of stepping into the leadoff spot immediately and providing Gardner-Webb with a dangerous threat – both as a hitter and a base runner. The former East Rutherford (N.C.) High star boasts 6.5-second speed in the 60-yard dash, and will flourish in Gardner-Webb’s traditionally aggressive running game. Blanton, who sat out last season after playing in 19 games as a true freshman for the Omaha-bound Tar Heels, spent the 2009 summer months starring for the Morganton Aggies of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL). He batted a league-best .424 with 40 runs scored, 18 RBI, three triples, three home runs and 16 stolen bases in 42 games as the Aggies’ leadoff man. His eye-popping 67 base hits also paced that circuit. Blanton is expected to compete for a spot in the outfield this season, and will likely be joined by a collection of players that includes senior O.J. McFarland (.242, 5 HR, 11 RBI), sophomore Matt Sapp (.300, 3 RBI), sophomore Adam McFarland (.182, 2 RBI), senior Jeff Giersbrook, senior Stefon Morris and a collection of youngsters that include sophomore Wes Poyner and freshmen Benji Jackson (6-3, 180), Danny Yelverton (5-11, 175) and Emilio Pagan (6-2, 180). The elder McFarland moved from catcher to the outfield during fall practice, and impressed with his arm strength and improved agility. He has show flashes of tremendous raw power at the plate

brett STACKHOUSE during his career with the Diamond ‘Dogs. The younger McFarland, Jackson and Pagan all hit from the left side – providing potential versatility to a lineup that was heavily populated with right-handed bats in 2009. Fulginiti, a career .342 batter who has seen time at first base, designated hitter and third base during his career, is expected to begin the 2010 season at third – and is one of the team’s most seasoned men at the plate. The Charlotte, N.C., native had his best season to date in 2009, starting 39 games and collecting 162 at bats in the middle of one of the Big South’s most explosive offensive lineups. Another player with All-Conference potential, junior shortstop Aaron Miller (.365, 5 RBI), will move into a full-time role at his natural position this spring. The Beulaville, N.C., native spent a great deal of time at third base last season, making 15 starts – and is a very strong defensive player in addition to boasting a career .336 batting average. Newcomer Daniel Merck, who batted .407 with 15 doubles, four home runs, 46 RBI and 14 stolen bases last season at Chattanooga State JC, is expected to step in immediately at second base – and is an excellent defensive player who starred at shortstop on the junior college level. The Cumming, Ga., native spent his freshman season at Georgia State, and could also play third base and shortstop if needed. One returning player who was missed heavily last season due to injury is Josh Drewery (6-2, 180, RSr.). The Casar, N.C., native’s bat will be counted on again in 2010, after he posted a .304 average with 14 doubles and 27 RBI at shortstop in 2008. Drewery and Fulginiti are interchangeable at first and third base, with both more than capable defensive at either spot. Gardner-Webb added a collection of young talent who could push for playing time on the infield, with Brad Collins (6-3, 205, Fr.), Casey Johns (5-10, 175, Fr.), Josh Shabram (5-9, 170, Fr.), Justin Gullickson (6-1, 175, Fr.) and Brock Wilson

(6-6, 200, Fr.) looking to make their mark as rookies in 2010. Boyles will be the man behind the plate from Opening Day, and is one of the team’s most consistent run producers. His power surge last season (15 HR) was the second-best for a single season in school history and tied Hall of Famer Wes Gentry for the most ever by a catcher. Boyles has 21 career

9

home runs and 79 RBI to his credit, with just two seasons as a primary starter under his belt (117 games played). O.J. McFarland, sophomore Aaron Haynes and redshirt freshman John Harris will serve as Boyles’ backups at catcher this season. Stackhouse is the team’s most experienced pitcher returning, having made 36 appearances and 14 starts in two seasons (6-7, 4.14 career ERA). The southpaw was at his best in league play last season, and has a deceptive array of pitches that he has used effectively so far in his career. Classmate Kyle Paeplow (1-1, 8.24 ERA) also returns with some experience with weekend starts, and could find himself in that role again. Jake Watts (1-2, 6.61 ERA) and Aaron Haynes (2-2, 8.69 ERA) are the only other Gardner-Webb pitchers who started more than one game last season – with Haynes expected to move into a more full-time role as a hitter in 2010. What it lacks in experience, Gardner-Webb’s pitching staff more than makes up for in raw talent. The freshman class secured by pitching coach Jason Burke provides the staff with much more capable velocity and versatility than last season’s group – which should be a bright spot this season. Heralded righty Brock Wilson (6-6, 200, Fr.) moves his fastball into the low 90s and will push for a spot in the weekend rotation when the season begins. Brandon Boling (6-4, 180, Fr.), another hard-throwing righty, rediscovered his velocity during preseason workouts and is a very polished pitcher for

10

a first-year player. Pagan, who could be a valuable two-way player all season, is another righty with a fastball that reaches into the low 90s – and will also compete for major innings as either a starter or relief man. Returning righties Josh White (0-1, 7.15 ERA) and Adam Izokovic (1-1, 11.12 ERA) will be key cogs in an improved, deeper bullpen – which will also feature Alex McMahan (0-0, 0.00 ERA), Jeffery Howell (6-1, 195, Fr.), Michael Hanzlik (6-4, 185, Fr.) and Matt Liedberg (6-1, 170, Fr.). Rookie Conner Scarborough (5-11, 190, Fr.), a very polished newcomer, likely earned the first shot at filling the closer’s role with a strong showing during fall practice. The High Point, N.C., native has the makeup and toughness to perform very well under pressure. The Diamond ‘Dogs will again play a challenging schedule, and will not play any games on campus this season with the construction of John Henry Moss Baseball Stadium set for completion by the start of the 2011 season. GWU will play home games this season in Forest City, Shelby, Cherryville, Gastonia and Spartanburg, S.C., with key series vs. preseason top-25 programs Coastal Carolina and Winthrop set for Forest City.
