DR. A. FRANK BONNER Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his sevenh year as the president of GardnerWebb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

18

During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and five grandchildren.

CHUCK BURCH Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 15th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 29th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last four academic years. This past year, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tournament title game in their respective seasons as well. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division

I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 53, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a 2009 graduate of Furman University; Danielle, a senior at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (17).

GARDNER-WEBB’S STORY

Gardner-Webb University has experienced remarkable growth, perseverance, and maturity. The institution began as a boarding high school and later became a junior college. Today Gardner-Webb is a thriving regional university with growing master’s and doctoral programs. From a movement initiated by the Kings Mountain Baptist Association in 1903, and later joined by the Sandy Run Baptist Association, the Boiling Springs High School was chartered on December 2, 1905, as an institution “where the young…could have the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” This close relationship of the institution to the area churches continues today. In response to the changing educational needs of the area, the institution was transformed into the Boiling Springs Junior College in 1928. The Great Depression created many problems for the College, but its survival was secured by the sacrifices of many loyal supporters. In 1942, Governor O. Max Gardner began devoting his energy, time and wealth to strengthening and guiding the College. So important was his influence that the name of the institution was changed to Gardner-Webb College in honor of the governor, his wife Fay Webb Gardner, and their families. The decades following World War II were years of physical growth and academic development. New buildings went up as enrollments increased. A major step in the institution’s development was its full accreditation as a senior college in 1971. In 1980 the institution began offering a Master of Arts degree in education. The institution officially became know as Gardner-Webb University in January 1993, culminating years of preparation. Today Gardner-Webb is a thriving regional university, which offers eight distinct degree programs, has a highly qualified faculty and a beautiful campus of over 200 acres. Historically the University has played significant roles in teacher education and ministerial preparation for church-related vocations. Programs of instruction and experiences designed to prepare teachers and ministers continue to be major objectives of the University. Although there have been many changes over the years, Gardner-Webb University remains closely related to the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. The University holds in high esteem its commitment to Christian principles and values as the best foundation for the development of human personality and social order.

Gardner-Webb head coach Chris Holtmann has quickly established himself as the right choice to lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs, entering his second season at the helm. A strong tactician and recruiter, his tremendous leadership and enthusiasm has injected energy and toughness into a tradition-rich program. Last season, Holtmann directed the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a strong 6-4 start against a tough early season schedule – including a 78-70 win at Atlantic 10 member Charlotte in the season opener. Gardner-Webb finished with an 11-21 overall mark, but advanced to the league’s postseason tournament for the first time since 2008-2009. The record is somewhat deceiving, however, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs were highly competitive – losing eight games by three points or less, including five of those in Big South Conference play. A testament to his efforts working with a young team of Runnin’ Bulldogs, Holtmann was third in balloting for the Big South Conference Coach of the Year folowing the 2010-2011 season. Holtmann, 39, returned to Gardner-Webb after spending two seasons as the lead assistant at Ohio University. In that role, he was instrumental in helping the Bobcats win the 2010 MidAmerican Conference Tournament in March and to an upset of No. 3 seed Georgetown in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. That win was the first in the NCAA Tournament for Ohio since 1983. Holtmann is the fifth head coach in the 40-year senior college history of Gardner-Webb men’s basketball. He replaces Rick Scruggs, who spent 15 seasons at the helm. The time to take over a program of his own arrived after years of hard work for Holtmann. He has served for 12 seasons as a coach in the college ranks, developing a strong reputation as an excellent

26

tactician – particularly on the defensive end of the floor – and a relentless recruiter. During his last 10 seasons on the bench, Holtmann has been a part of five conference championships. During Holtmann’s time at Ohio, he was a key figure in securing the top recruiting classes in the Mid-American Conference in each of his seasons with the school according to ESPN.com, including 2010 MAC Freshman of the Year D.J. Cooper. In 2009-2010, Ohio led the Mid-American Conference in scoring offense (74.7 ppg) and also led the league in assist/turnover ratio and defensive rebounding – two statistical categories Holtmann places extreme importance in. Holtmann is no stranger to Gardner-Webb basketball. He spent five seasons as an assistant at GWU from 2003-2008, and was the program’s Associate Head Coach in four of those seasons, proving to be a major asset in some of the program’s most notable basketball moments. Under Holtmann’s guidance, the Runnin’ Bulldogs experienced a strong defensive surge, leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in threepoint field goal defense in 2007-08 and ranking second in overall field goal defense in 2007-08 and 2004-05. During his time on the bench in Boiling Springs, Gardner-Webb pulled off memorable upsets of East Carolina (2004, 2005), Minnesota (2005) and No. 20 Kentucky (2007), and captured the Atlantic Sun Conference’s regular season crown in 2004-05. GWU also advanced to

the league’s title game that season, going 18-12 against a difficult regular season schedule. Holtmann’s recruiting efforts helped produce some of the most notable talent for Gardner-Webb in the Division I era, including a pair of recruiting classes ranked in the national top-100 by Hoop Scoop. The most recent of those top-100 classes included 2008 AllAmerican and Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Thomas Sanders. During Sanders’ senior season, the Sugarland, Texas, native averaged 18.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game, finishing third nationally with 20 double-doubles on the season. Sanders was the first GWU player to average a season double-double since Stan Easterling in 1998. Holtmann also recruited 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America guard Aaron Linn and 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year Nate Blank to Boiling Springs. Tim Jennings, another dynamic guard recruited by Holtmann, was the Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year in both 2004-05 and 2005-06 and is playing professionally in South America. Jennings was a key cog in teams that combined to win 35 games in two seasons (2004-2006). Prior to his first action in Boiling Springs, Holtmann worked under his mentor, Coach Paul Patterson, as top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Taylor University – his alma mater. The Trojans won consecutive conference titles and won at least 25 games in each of Holtmann’s final two seasons on the bench. Those teams finished ranked eighth and 13th in the NAIA national polls, respectively.

Holtmann spent the 1997-98 season as a graduate assistant at Taylor – his first coaching position – before spending one season as a full-time assistant at Geneva (Pa.) College. The Nicholasville, Ky., native was an NAIA All-America selection at guard under Coach Patterson in 1994, leading Taylor to a 29-5 record, a No. 1 national ranking and a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. Holtmann spent his high school days starring on the hardwood at Jessamine County (Ky.) High. He earned a degree in psychology from Taylor in 1994 and a Master’s in athletic administration from Ball State in 2000. He and his wife, the former Lori Bedi, have one daughter, Nora Jane, born May 19, 2010.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT HOLTMANN HEAD COACHES JOHN GROCE, HEAD COACH, OHIO UNIVERSITY “Gardner-Webb has hired an exceptional coach but an even better person. He understands what it takes to build a successful basketball program and winning culture – both on and off the court. The Ohio basketball family is very excited for Chris and his family to have such a special opportunity.” PAUL PATTERSON, HEAD COACH, TAYLOR UNIVERSITY (NAIA HALL OF FAMER) “I am excited for both Chris Holtmann and Gardner-Webb University. Chris is a bright, energetic, tireless worker who has been a high achiever his entire career. I would expect to see the same from him in his leadership at GardnerWebb. His teams will be hard working, well prepared , and hard to play against every night. This is a good day for Gardner-Webb University.” BRAD STEVENS, HEAD COACH, BUTLER UNIVERSITY “Chris is a great person and coach. His experience, both in coaching and at Gardner-Webb, will help the program flourish under his direction.”

NATIONAL MEDIA JEFF GOODMAN, FOXSPORTS.COM SENIOR BASKETBALL WRITER “Chris Holtmann is one of the rising young coaches in the game today. He’s a guy who just flat-out gets it. He has a tremendous work ethic, connects with his players, can recruit and also knows the game. There just aren’t a lot of guys in the business who have that type of versatility. Just look at the success Gardner-Webb had when he was on staff - and then check out what Ohio University did this past season. It’s no coincidence that Chris has been an integral part of both situations.” DAVE TELEP, NATIONAL RECRUITING DIRECTOR, ESPN/ESPN.COM “I think Gardner-Webb caught Chris on the way up. He’s a grinder who knows his way around our state and has always done a good job with his evaluations. They don’t get after it much harder than Chris Holtmann.”

Jay McAuley enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Runnin’ Bulldogs men’s basketball program, and has a proven track record of success as an assistant in the Division I ranks. McAuley came to GardnerWebb after spending 2008-2010 at nearby Wofford College. In his two seasons with the Terriers, McAuley helped the squad to the its two most successful years at the Division I level – which included 42 wins, the 2010 Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles and a near upset of Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA

30

Tournament. Prior to joining the Wofford staff in 2008, McAuley spent one season as a graduate manager at the University of Georgia, handling film exchange, video editing and scouting report preparation. The Marietta, Ga., native played four seasons for the Bulldogs in Athens as a walk-on, earning his roster spot through open tryouts. As a junior, he saw action in 17 games with starts against Auburn and Clemson. McAuley was named co-captain as a senior. McAuley earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Georgia in 2006 and a master’s degree in physical education in 2008. He was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll as a student-athlete.

Mike Netti enters his second season on Chris Holtmann’s staff at Gardner-Webb, but will be in his sixth season overall with the program. N e t t i returned to the program after serving for two years as head coach at Lackawanna (Pa.) College in the junior college ranks. He directed Lackawanna to 43 wins in his two seasons as head coach, including a 25-7 mark in 2008-09. Two of his players with the Falcons went on to earn NJCAA Division II All-America honors and one went on to sign with a Big East Conference

program. The Liverpool, N.Y., native spent four seasons as an assistant at Gardner-Webb – from 2002-2006 – helping the Runnin’ Bulldogs to two of the best years at the Division I level. He was on the bench for the squad’s 2004-2005 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title and saw the ‘Dogs win 35 games between 2004-2006, including a pair of wins over East Carolina and an upset of Minnesota. He was instrumental in the development of two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year Tim Jennings and a pair of recruiting classes that were ranked No. 1 in the league by Hoop Scoop. Netti is a 2002 graduate of Syracuse University. Netti played basketball at Division III Alvernia College in Reading, Pa., where he was a two-time varsity Letterwinner. In 2000, Alvernia won the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. During his time at Alvernia, Netti was also the team’s representative on the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Takayo Siddle enters his second season as an assistant coach with the GardnerWebb men’s basketball program. Siddle joined the staff in Boiling Springs after spending one season as an assistant coach with the postgraduate team at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatam, Va. – historically one of the most successful prep school programs in the nation. Serving under head coach Kevin Keatts, Siddle helped the Tigers to another extremely successful campaign that saw 12 players sign NCAA Division I scholarships – including five who will play in either the ACC, SEC, Big East or Big Ten next season as freshmen. Siddle is no stranger to Boiling Springs, N.C., having played four seasons with the Runnin’ Bulldogs before graduating in 2009. As a freshman, Siddle was a key part of teams that upset Minnesota and East Carolina on the road and that took defending national champion North Carolina to the final buzzer. As a junior, Siddle helped Gardner-Webb upset No. 20 Kentucky in Rupp Arena and advance to the final four of the 2007 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in Madison Square Garden. Siddle played in 32 games that season, averaging 5.5 points for a team that won 16 games. The Eden, N.C., native started all 30 games for the Runnin’ Bulldogs as a sophomore, averaging a career-best 8.6 points per game and dishing off 104 assists. He played in 21 games as a freshman, and finished his career with 114 games played in four seasons.

32

Siddle’s brightest moment in Boiling Springs came in a 95-90, double overtime win vs. Liberty in Paul Porter Arena – when he scored 12 of his career-high 18 points in the two overtime periods to key the victory. Siddle hit a three with 10.0 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, then scored a four points in a five-second flurry at the end of the first overtime to force a final five minutes of play. Two of those game-saving points came on a 17-foot leaner after a stolen inbounds pass with just one second on the clock. Siddle played one postgraduate season at Hargrave Military Academy under Coach Keatts before beginning his playing career at Gardner-Webb and was part of a very successful N.C. Gaters AAU program during his prep career. He starred at Eden Morehead (N.C.) High under Coach John Harder, averaging 27 points, six assists and two steals per game as a senior to earn All-State honors from iHigh.com
