Abstractintheory,yetfigurativeinreality,themajorityofLevineʼsʻnailsculpturesʼare extraordinaryrepresentationsofthehumanform.Awareofhisunusualchoiceinmaterialto expressthehumanbody,Levineexplainsthataftersometimeusingnailstocreateother, moreabstractsculptures,itstruckhim“theinterplaybetweentherigid,angularnailsandthe softcurvesofthehumantorso,wouldbemorestriking.”Levineʼsabilitytocapturethe curvilinearnatureofthehumanbodywithsuchsharpandinflexibleobjectsisintensely represented.Hecreatesfigureswhicharebeautifullymuscularyetwonderfullydelicate,and itisclearthattheartisthasaninnategraspofthehumanshape.
Inaveryclearmovetoencompasshisloveofnonrepresentationalideas,Levine'slatestwork isinstarkcontrasttohisfigurativesculptures.Hislargemonumentalworkembracesthe senseoftouchandtheabstractandasensitiveuseofthematerialswhichheutilises,suchas Oak,COR-TEN,stainlesssteel,andstone.Marcusnowhasafollowingofvisuallyimpaired loversofartandsculpture.
LightalsoplaysanintegralroleinLevineʼswork,as“frommorningsuntoeveningsunthe shadowsacrossthesculpturescanappearaslightasapencilsketchorasdarkasacharcoal.

MarcusLevinestudiedatJacobKramerArtCollegealongsideDamienHirst.Previousalumni includeDavidHockney.Sincecompletinghisfirstʻnailsculptureʼinautumn2004,Levine believeshehasperfectedhistechnique,pushingtheboundarieswitheachnewworkand creatingincreasinglydynamicinterpretationsofsubjectsutilisinganincrediblydifficult medium.Heisaccreditedwithbeingthefirstartisttocreateafullcolournailsculptureand isconsideredtheFatheroffigurativenailsculpture.

In(2016)Iwasclearingoutmystudioandcame acrossaHarpersBazaardated2010.AtfirstI thoughtwhyhaveIkeptaHarpersBazaaranditwas abouttobecastontotherubbishpilebutItooka 2ndlookandtheimageofCherylwasonthefront cover.IhadoriginallybeeninterestedinCherylʼseye andthoughtitwouldmakeagreatnailsculpture. NowhavingbeenworkingwithSwarovskicrystalsfor afewyears,incorporatingthemintomynon representationalstudyʼs,Icouldseethatthiswas probablyoneofthefewoccasionsthatIwouldgetto usethemfiguratively.Itseemedprovidentialtome thattheimagehadresurfacedatthispointinmy career.ItwasafantasticchallengeandIknewalot woulddependonmatchingthesizeofthecrystalsin themaskwithcrystalsIcouldobtainfromSwarovski. IcontactedAlexiLubomirskithefashion photographerresponsiblefortheoriginalimageand askedhispermissiontolicencethephotoformy sculpture.Hewasveryamenabletotheideaand quicklyagreedsendingmetheimages.Itwassix monthsbeforeIcouldfinallystarttheproject.After itwasfinishedmysupplierofSwarovskicrystalssent ittohercontactatSwarovskiUK,whoconfirmedthat theyhadmadetheoriginalcrystalmaskwhichCheryl hadworn,soitseemedanicefinaltouchtothestory.
