Our Educational Strategy
The educational process at The Storm King School is a partnership between our students and faculty. We invite students to co-create their school experience with their teachers. Naturally, our students receive guidance, but they are taught to self-author their educational futures and grow as lifelong learners. We place equal emphasis on the journey and the destination.
What Makes Us Different?
Since 1867, The Storm King School has been inspiring students by combining established educational methodology with proven innovation. Students cultivate their expressive sides in modern arts facilities, build character in 18 varsity and club sports, and grow in their awareness as global citizens.
Experiential Learning in a Majestic Setting Our students truly “learn by doing. Our educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that the learner plays an essential role in designing his or her own educational journey.
Thoughtful Use of Technology We embrace technology that enhances our mission and gives students the skills they need to thrive in a 21st century work environment. Storm King was one of the first schools to adopt the iPad as the primary platform for textbooks, notes, and organization for all teachers and students.
Academic Support Tailored to Each Student’s Needs Our small classes averaging 10 students allow teachers to develop each student's unique gifts and abilities. For bright, college-bound students with identified learning differences, we offer classes with even more personalized attention than in our traditional courses.
Stimulating Educational Atmosphere In addition to our own creative works, we invite authors, artists, musicians, politicians, and other thought-provoking speakers and performers to our campus every week.
Sense of Community & Commitment to Service Whether building homes as part of Habitat for Humanity, cooking and serving meals for the less fortunate, cleaning the mighty Hudson River, or maintaining trails in Black Rock Forest, Storm King students uphold the school’s longstanding tradition of volunteerism and activism.
Dedication to Global Education Sometimes we go beyond our local indoor and outdoor classrooms to such places as Central American indigenous communities, cities in Europe and Asia, or the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. These excursions compel students to examine their place and impact on the planet. We add a layer of service to such trips to instill in students an understanding of their responsibility as members of the global community.
Robust Athletics Student athletes not only compete at a high level but also personify the core values of our school. Character development is at the heart of our athletic program.
Renowned Arts Program The Storm King School boasts an accomplished faculty, state-of-the-art technology, and a variety of exciting courses to inspire interest and stimulate creativity. From stagecraft to music production, graphic arts to modern dance, with everything from choral singing to playwriting in between, we offer dynamic instruction in theatre arts, visual arts, music and music technology.
Nurture your creative side
