In compiling the pages of “India Maritime Icons 2024,” we embarked on a journey to celebrate the individuals who have left an indelible mark on the maritime industry in India. While our selection showcases a diverse range of talent and accomplishments, you may notice the absence of certain obvious icons who have long been synonymous with Indian maritime excellence. The reasons for their exclusion vary: some have chosen to remain in the shadows, shying away from the limelight; others, in their characteristic modesty, prefer to downplay their contributions; and a few have transitioned into a quieter phase of their careers.
Despite our persistent efforts to engage them, a handful remained unresponsive to our overtures, and for some, unfortunately, they missed our deadlines. In their place however, we proudly feature the up-and-coming maritime stars of today - individuals brimming with vigour, enthusiasm, and zeal, poised to make their mark amidst their more sated senior counterparts. 1. Contribution to the Maritime Industry
This could be in terms of significant improvements in industry processes, introduction of new technology, or contributions to research that led to significant leaps in the maritime sector.
2. Leadership
Serving in a key leadership position in a maritime organization, which could be a shipping company, an education institute, a naval organization, or an industry body. This position would have allowed them to influence and shape the maritime sector.
3. Recognition
Recognition by their peers and even international organizations for their work in the maritime sector. Awards and citations are a good indicator of such recognition.
4. Sustainability Initiatives
Contributions towards sustainability and environment-friendly practices in the maritime sector. This can include initiatives for cleaner fuel, reducing carbon footprint, and supporting marine biodiversity.
5. Education and Mentorship
Contributions towards the development of maritime education and training in India. This includes not only establishing institutions but also mentoring the next generation of maritime leaders.
6. Policy Development
Influencing maritime policies at the national and international level. Their work should have helped shape the policy framework for the maritime sector in India, including in the field of gender equity.
7. Historical Impact
They might be historical figures who played a central role in shaping India’s maritime tradition and prowess.

The 102-year old doyen, Capt. Jagdish Chandra Anand, embodies a remarkable legacy in maritime. With an extraordinary career spanning over eight decades, his contributions have profoundly shaped Indian shipping and maritime regulation.

Capt. Anand’s professional journey began with significant roles, including Superintendent and CEO of Scindia Steam Navigation and Managing Director of India Steam Ship Ltd. His leadership extended to pivotal positions such as President of the Indian National Ship Owners’ Association (INSA) and Chairman of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). Notably, he retired as Chairman Emeritus of IRClass in 2012, a position he had guided with distinction for 27 years out of its 35-year history, ensuring India’s self-reliance in ship classification.
As INSA President from 1974 to 1977, Anand was instrumental in establishing the national classification society and championed Indian shipping on international platforms. His efforts were crucial in advancing the cause of developing countries in maritime affairs through long active participation in global symposia.

This initiative, inaugurated in February 2016, marked a significant advancement in India’s maritime insurance sector.

Captain Ashutosh Vijay Apandkar’s career spans an impressive 28 years in the shipping industry, with a distinguished 17 years dedicated to maritime training. As the Captain Superintendent and Principal of Training Ship Rahaman, India’s oldest maritime training institute, Apandkar has been a pivotal figure in shaping maritime education and fostering future maritime professionals.

Since assuming the role of Principal in May 2014, Apandkar has led Training Ship Rahaman to new heights, earning it the prestigious title of Best Maritime Training Institute of the Year in 2017, 2022, and 2023.
Under his leadership, the institute has been recognized for its excellence in pre-sea training and its impactful contributions to maritime education. A notable academic, Apandkar holds an MBA in International Business from the University of Wales and a Ph.D. from Open International University. He is also a Ph.D. guide for the Indian Maritime University and for MANET, Pune.

Apandkar’s values of empathy and integrity are reflected in his significant contributions to society. He pioneered the “Women in Rating” program in India, secured scholarships worth Rs.
30 lakhs for financially disadvantaged girls, and conducted outreach programs across the country, presenting maritime careers to over 2,500 girls in tier-II and tier-III cities and villages. His efforts in promoting gender diversity and education in maritime fields are commendable.
In addition to this, Apandkar is also a certified graphologist and pranic healer, offering free services to those in need.

Pradeep Bajpai’s 45-year career in the maritime industry is a testament to his exceptional leadership and deep expertise. Starting his journey with the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) in 1978, Bajpai has since forged a path of remarkable achievements and innovations in shipping.

Bajpai’s career trajectory includes pivotal roles at Bernhard Schulte Ship Management (BSM) in Mumbai and Leo Ship Management in Hong Kong. At Leo Ship Management, he successfully established the company within a year, expanding its fleet and transforming it into a profitable entity. His tenure at BSM too was marked by the introduction of the 12 biggest ever Valemax bulk carriers, setting up crucial training programs for their safe operation and significantly enhancing the company’s reputation with oil majors.
Joining Tomini Shipping in Dubai as Managing Director in 2019, Bajpai orchestrated a transformation that saw the company’s fleet grow from 8 to 29 vessels. His strategic implementation of a robust Safety Management System and establishment of an inhouse manning office in Mumbai were key to elevating Tomini’s RightShip Safety Score from 2 to 5.
