MAGGIE CIACCIO architecture portfolio
Architecture grants the opportunity to participate in the transformation of an intangible, immaterial, and often times chaotic idea into a tangible and complex built form that can be experienced through our senses, through space, and through time. As an architect, I value the responsibility to define and domesticate space that fosters our day-to-day activities. To me, architecture should embody beauty in the world.

SANATORIUM FOR TOPOPHOBICS RECIPIENT of Pella Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Thesis An exploration into the articulation of boundary & its effect on the creation of place
E
nclosure is articulated by the mark of a boundary both tangible or intangible. Architects are responsible for domesticating space relative to boundary. The boundary not only bounds the physical limits of a body, but reveals… how is the floor on which we walk; how is the wall and the door through which we pass; how is the horizon at which we gaze; and how is the sky that hovers above our head. As Heidegger says, “A boundary is not that at which something stops, but as the Greeks recognized, the boundary is that, from which something begins its presencing.”
modern culture. This culture is thought to be the cause of fears, anxieties, and phobias that are intimately associated to the altering of familiar places.
With a focus in exploring the articulation of boundary and its effect on the creation of place, this Sanatorium for Topophobics (those who fear certain places) provides an environment for dwelling. I have created two retreats: one for an agoraphobic woman where the boundary is defined by floor, wall, and ceiling, and one for a claustrophobic man where the boundary extends to the ground, horizon, and sky. The essence of space differs greatly as a result of the treatment In turn, this boundary makes for a spatial condition as either of its space-defining elements. This essence is defined by an continuous or discontinuous. Through this exploration, I aggregate of such elements as threshold, structure, material, have investigated how the articulation of this boundary may siting, and movement. respond to an occupant’s warped perception on their respective spaces. Through this challenge, I have strived to create spatially The purpose of architecture is to create a dwelling by therapeutic environments through appropriately articulating constructing a setting in which one knows their place in the idea of boundary relative to each occupants specific needs, the world. A place is thought of as a space with a distinct and re-establishing the genius loci. character, and that character has been challenged through the breaking and remaking of boundaries inherent in the evolving

VIVALDI HOUSE
Sawhorse Revolution Design Mentor Volunteer 2017-2018
Sawhorse Revolution is a Seattle based non-profit that serves high school students primarily in Central and South Seattle. Their mission is to help foster confident, community-oriented youth through the power of carpentry and craft. As a mentor, I have particiated in after school programs with students from Franklin High School in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle. In the first semester, the volunteers mentor the students on the principles of design. The students learn how to manifest their ideas through various drawing conventions and handmade models. By the end of the semester, the students have collectively designed a tiny house. The next semester the team reconvenes to build the tiny house in partnership with a volunteer contracting firm. Once the tiny house is complete, it is donated to one of the tiny house villages in the city of Seattle. The goal of this program is to help the students think outside the realm of their typical curriculum, get hands on experience, and see their ideas come to life.

VOLUNTEER
I am an architect who is blessed with the opportunity to pursue my dream. A dream that started as a young girl making houses for lady bugs out of cereal boxes in the backyard of my suburban Chicago home. My exposure to Chicago growing up perpetuated my evolving passion and admiration for architecture. While I have grappled over the years as to what architecture IS to me, I continually attempt to put it into words. Architecture is a dream; a dream in the sense that it is a collection of abstract thoughts where you wake up with only a sentiment, an idea, or a concept. That is where it all starts. Architecture then becomes the endeavor to manifest that ineffable experience through tangible means of space and material.
