ACADEMIC WORK

CHAPITÔ RESIDENCES . LISBON . PT academic work. 2010 FINALIST on Secil Universities Award 2010 The briefing included different types of programmatic areas like residences and an auditorium, with its adjacent areas, for Chapitô Circus School. It aims to be integrated in the old Chão-do-Loureiro Market lot, located in Costa do Castelo, Lisbon. Once it’s a circus school, becomes clear the leadership that an auditorium should takes. It takes us to these two questions: What if the building was a natural extension of the streets bounding? And what if the theatre venue was open to the city? With this complex program, we proposed an extension of the street in order to organize the programmatic areas in its extension, with the auditorium as heart of the building, open to the city. The whole building is a pedestrian pathway in ramp that involves the auditorium, linking the streets bounding. The programmatic areas appear along the ramp, by understanding the building as a single floor. The galleries work as a natural extension of the interior spaces. They are continuous to encourage circus activities, which depends on choreography. All entrances are drawn on different levels, according to topography, allowing different paths crossing and the hierarchy of different areas. With this proposal, we proposed a clear, continuous, and open space in response to the spirit of Chapitô Circus School and the city.

COMPETITIONS

TOURIST INFORMATION POINT . OPORTO . PT 1st LOCAL PRIZE on Pladur Students Competion XX edition . 2010 Selected for exhibition, Madrid, Spain. with Mårio David Serrano Traces of an 18th century’ house is everything that remains in the field: the front still intact. A rocky cliff defines the image along Avenida Dom Henrique, ending on the parcel addressed to the project. The proposal is grounded in the connection between the two above conditions: the ruin and the rocky field, between what is artificial and what is natural. The intervention rebuilds the parcel boundaries, now bordered by a pedestrian staircase link, between the high and low elevations, the Travessa do Loureiro, which is currently a blind alley. The site was then occupied: the new volume moves away from the existing facade, creating an interstitial entrance patio between these two elements, where vegetation invades and involves the two confronting eras. At the ground floor level, the new building rises, while excavating an irregular surface, inducing a cavern and revealing the light coming from the roof top. The exhibition area is located over the entrance level, defining wide spaces suitable to handle the appropriation of future exhibitions.

HOMEMADE STARTUP . GUIMARÃES . PT international ideas competition . 2013 with Mário David Serrano and Filipe Paixão consultant: João Cravo (NOSSO) client: Espaço Arquitectura . Desafios Urbanos ‘12 g.f.a.: 17 200 m2 cost: 11 025 000 €

The old Wiring Factory of Cotton and Fabrics is defined by a set of buildings. Its transformation led us not only to a critical reflection of the territory in question, but also a thorough perception of the deep socio-economic changes in Portugal. We identified problems such as unemployment, emigration and profound labor transformations of the new generations. It was understood that these young people, well educated and entrepreneurial, are seeking new ways of work / live. More than a steady job, they are service providers. We searched for a program capable of giving continuity to Guimarães European Capital of Culture and that, simultaneously, led us to find new ways to intervene in abandoned factory buildings without historical and architectural value. The matrix program is defined by a business startup (low cost offices). Work at home is understood as an increasingly common practice. A generation where being connected is more important than the place where you work. A flexible spatial appropriation of this program will increase its potential through countless combinations. Spaces where architects, designers, marketers, journalists, lawyers, cooks chefs, advertising people, web designers, accountants, etc., inhabit and live. A crossover connection capable of generating economic, social and cultural value. Low cost offices + low cost houses = HOMEMADE STARTUP (a home and an office for entrepreneurs) The architectural proposal is almost just a process of demolition of the excess parts: The plot is opened to the public. Inside, an old warehouse gives way to a park. The expansion of this space towards a park / forest becomes the founding operation of the revitalization of the surrounding industrial area. At the factory, the openings are fully closed and its uncovered interior reveals its entire structural rigor. New walls define a grid that hides the existing structure (pillars and beams). A new scale of measurement is found: the module. Without compromising the existing structure, some modules are “subtracted”, giving place to public and private patios, and placed on different levels. It is this element around which all “homemade startups” articulate and contort . 26

WORKS IN COLLABORATION WITH TMA

COLLABORATION WITH TMA internship . 2012-2013

COTTAGE HOTEL. Beja, Portugal. 2012. Pivate Commission(under construction) The hotel is located in a small village named Mina da Juliana. An “L” shape defines two diferent areas: the first one with six bedrooms for guests and the second one with facilities and a house for the owners. The challenge was to use, as much as possible, the local materials like brick and rattan.

ARCHIVO PAVILION. Mexico. 2012. International Competition (unbuilt) The program is a temporary pavilion for exhibitions in ADA (Archivo de Architectura y Diseño) garden, in Mexico City. The proposal is a plywood struture, shelves look alike, with inside boxes. These could be used as benches or tables. It aims to be adapted for different situations.

LAYOUT FOR DAVID CLEARBOUT’S EXHIBITION”THE SHAPE OF TIME”, MART. Rovereto, Italy. 2012. Private Commission (completed) Clearbout’s work is a narrative of time told by a succession of videos. The proposal is a set of boxes and benches that organized the exhibition according to the video theme. Floor and benches are coated for a white grass carpet, so that people should walk slowly as a playing between body and time.
