What’s New for 2018? A Lot Actually…

N

ow is the time when we look about our indoor space and dream about the design possibilities. This issue is devoted to the latest

trends for 2018, to give you ideas and show you how you can decorate your own home using Carpet, Wood, Tile, Laminate, Rugs, Resilient, LVT and precious designer materials like bamboo, cork, leather and even marble! We deliver on the promise of the possibilities, illustrating what YOU can actually do in your own home. See, for example, what you can do with the new luxury woodfashion vinyl plank. Or the amazing decor of porcelain and ceramic tile. How about the timeless inspiration of woods, like American Hardwoods for floors, furniture, cabinetry? The glory of pet friendly carpet backed by the performance of a stain and odor-protecting cushion? And let’s not forget the splendor, colors, patterns and carved surfaces afforded by today’s most advanced fibers and technologies for carpet and rugs. One message should be clear as you read through these pages: There is always something new. It may be a new product. New also may be a new technology which enhances the look or performance of your favorite flooring fashion. Even as bold as a new flooring category all together…. Like waterproof hardwood floors and more! Or it may be a new vision from a designer which presents a whole new world of possibilities for what you can do in your own home. Now’s the perfect time to get inspired!

CERAMIC

T I LE

The ancient craft of ceramics dates back to Ancient Egypt, around 4700 B.C.E. and has been a popular building material for both indoor and outdoor applications for thousands of years. If ever there was a type of flooring that could be described as timeless, ceramic tile would be it!

Ceramic Tile: Ancient Techniques Offer Modern Elegance Beyond durability, ceramic and porcelain tiles are easy to maintain, requiring only regular sweeping and the occasional bit of mop-love and they naturally repel dirt and odor. This makes ceramic tile one of the most worry-free flooring options out there.

Planning something special? Ask your retailer or designer to show you photos of tile projects they’ve done. During the planning and shopping phase, bring along a digital photo of the room you’re doing over. Whether it’s ceramic, porcelain, stone or any other tile, great looks are in the details. Grout lines. What do you like, and what looks best? Thick? Thin? None at all? (These are butted tight.) What colors are available? Coordinating? Contrasting? Surface finishes. Matte? Satin? Shiny? Mixed looks are in vogue! Aside from texture, think color. Ask yourself what mood or feeling are you trying to evoke. Calm? Bright? Excitement? Fresh? Warm? What colors are your personal favorites? Cut out what appeals to you in magazines and start a file of “best looks.” (This works in all categories!) Bring home paint samples and live with them for a few days, along with the tile you’ve chosen. Light changes during the day and with the source. Designing is easier when you choose both at the same time! (Like two colors? Keep the alternative for when it’s time to redecorate. You have only to change the paint for a coordinated, inexpensive makeover.) Matte floors absorb light and make a room feel cozier. Shiny floors make a room feel airy and elegant.

Financing and warranty Since most of us are budget conscious — you might want to consider financing your purchase. Many retailers offer really great credit and financing options and even have their own store brand credit programs. Be sure to check the interest rates, minimum payments, and any financial charges that might affect your decision. Be sure to look over the warranty for any requirements concerning installation, care and maintenance of your new floor. Remember this when you are designing with tile: the trick is to see the larger picture. Don’t think floor, think project — the overall design, taking into account other surfaces, accessories and transitions to other rooms. ■

Carpet’s Comeback! The beauty and benefit of the carpet you choose can stretch across the globe.

Looking for flooring trends in carpet?

ook for palettes from bold to soft colors and everything in between— knowing you can have any color you wish! Look also for textures, patterns and the “feel”. (Soft carpet is still very

much “in.”) Carpet always has been and continues to be a rich foundation for décor decisions. You can recreate classic looks or borrow ideas from the elegant homes and design artists or combine different looks you admire for an altogether updated eclectic look that is uniquely YOU. Design can and should also be personal. Carpet choice can be your way to break through conventional thinking and introduce your own personality and vibe. Carpet allows you to make a room cozy, playful, dramatic or elegant. It also helps create a continuous flowing, tasteful design room to room and floor to floor. Carpet is great to match with wood or ceramic and to create personalized custom looks — and to do so economically.

CARPET

When planning, remember to consider the ways in which a carpet’s yarns are twisted, loose to tight. At issue is both appearance and performance. Generally, the higher or tighter the twist, the better the performance characteristics are apt to be. Higher twists result in more defined, more sophisticated carpet loops. In other words, looser twists are more casual; tighter twists more formal. Tighter twists are also easier to vacuum.

One way physical carpet texture is introduced is through the high and low loops of a carpet’s construction — cut piles, loose frieze, nubby berbers, smooth Saxonies, even the amount of yarn twist, create differing textures. Think out of the box! Don’t be afraid of the visual textures and vibe provided by images like florals and geometrics or the way a carpet appears to be tailored or sculpted or the application of color flecks in the yarn. In other words, indulge your imagination and artistic eye and your sense of touch. Nobody spends a lot of time thinking about hardwood floors. Seriously, when was the last time two besties got into a heated argument over whether or not hardwood floors are worth the investment? Probably never.

5 Common Hardwood Flooring Myths Debunked Since hardwood floors are such a big investment, it would probably be a good idea to debunk some of the myths surrounding them so, when the time comes, nobody has to rely on hearsay to make such an important decision. Are you crazy?! I can’t afford hardwood floors! At first when you first see the admittedly higher price of hardwood floors it can definitely seem that way. However, the truth of the matter is that hardwood floors offer an extremely good return on investment. Once you realize that hardwood floors can literally last hundreds of years with proper care, and think about how other flooring types often need replacing as frequently as every decade or so, hardwood starts to look a whole lot more cost effective.

I don’t need fancy floors, this is just a starter house! If you’re planning to trade up in a few years, you will want to sell the house you are currently living in and will want to get the maximum amount possible. You may not realize it, but the fact that you plan to move is actually a reason you should invest in hardwood floors. Most realtors believe that hardwood floors add about 10% to the resale value of a home. So, if you drop $10K on hardwood for a home valued at $200K you can expect to sell for $220K, effectively doubling your investment.

How do I clean my hardwood floor? There are some very basic things you can do to prolong the “just installed” beauty of your floor. Mats, outside and inside doorways, will make the biggest difference because you’ll leave grit and dirt particles outside, where they belong. When you have a spill, wipe it up with a paper towel as soon as you can. For daily cleaning, just use a microfiber mop. For large rooms, buy the widest one you can find. Spots that need some extra attention can be cleaned with the same mop, sprayed with a good hardwood floor cleaner available in flooring specialty and home improvement stores. Please don’t wet mop your floor. Moisture will enter in between the planks in spite of the tight fit, causing the wood and core to swell or warp. A damp towel or rag is OK to use. When you vacuum, turn off the beater brush. It can scratch your floor, even if you have a hand-scraped or wire-brushed finish.

To ensure a trouble free installation, it should be unboxed and acclimated in your home. From a design standpoint, bamboo is naturally light in color except for the “knuckles,” as the growth segments are called, which have a darker, mottled look. It is the distinctive knuckles that give bamboo its slightly Eastern look. Many darker colors can be achieved through a heat and pressure process called caramelization. RESILIENT

Better than the real thing? Well, like most things, that’s a matter of personal opinion. For some people, authenticity is more important than functionality and price. However, vinyl has an edge over its natural counterparts in other ways. Vinyl floors are treated with a durable top coat that protects it from gouges, scratches, and dents. It also has more give than it’s natural counterparts. This means that it is easier on the joints if you are standing for long periods of time and also reduces the chances of breakables shattering when dropped. These qualities, combined with the fact that it is waterproof and stain resistant, make it an excellent option for homes with rambunctious children or pets that often wreak havoc on other types of flooring. Many resilients are antimicrobial, recommended for highly allergic people, and antistatic, thus helping to safeguard your electronics. Many are environmentally friendly. Linoleum, for example, is composed of linseed oil, wood flour and pine rosin and is biodegradable, yet boasts a rainbow of colors and fresh, fashionable designs. And these floors are as tough as they are attractive, more durable and stain-resistant than ever.

It makes a fun project One of the best things about vinyl flooring is that it can be installed as a DIY project by people with little more expertise than can be gleaned from a few YouTube videos and a DIY blogpost or two. Still, one of the chief benefits of selecting resilient—even custom looks—is that installation is usually easier and thus less costly. Prep work can be minimal—or nonexistent. Resilient flooring can be applied over a variety of surfaces, including plywood subfloors and concrete. And, as long as the surface is flat and sound, it may be applied over existing floors such as wood flooring or linoleum flooring. ■

LAMINAT E

They say that if you’re ten years ahead of your time, you are considered a genius, and if you’re twenty years ahead of your time you are considered insane.

A Fresh Look at Laminate Flooring Before you buy laminate flooring, here’s what you need to know to make a smart buying decision

Above: Grand Illusions from Armstrong Laminate. Opposite page top: Reclaime in Malted Tawny from QuickStep. Bottom: Hillside Hickory in Stone from Mannington Laminate.

52

FABULOUSfloors

T

oday’s laminate floors offer realistic looking hardwoods, stones and other patterns and colors with accurate surface

textures that are practically indistinguishable from the real thing. Depending upon the look you want to achieve, there is not a whole lot of price difference between laminates. An exotic rich hardwood look laminate may cost just about the same as a travertine on marble look laminate. The reason is that the manufacturing process is basically the same, regardless of style, color or type. It’s a photograph that provides the decorative surface visual. Over the years, advances in digital imaging and materials sciences have brought massive improvements to laminate flooring. The ability to create a high-resolution, photorealistic image layer to replace the old, grainy low-res images combined with chemical engineering advances that have increased the durability and stability of laminate have offered this much-maligned flooring material a second chance at life.

Q4 2017

LAMINAT E

Money talks Just like back in the day, laminate flooring’s price is definitely a major draw. It is an excellent way for people who have more design savvy than money to achieve the look they want for their homes without having to sell a vital organ to get it.

Pet and kid friendly Our pets are like our children but, like children, they can often be a handful. Our dog’s claws and general rambunctiousness, though sweet and cute and perfect in every way, of course, can cause some pretty hefty damage to a lot of flooring materials. Laminate flooring’s protective layer is made with aluminum dioxide, among other things, and is more than capable of standing up to the abuse of even the most energetic of pups. Fun Fact: Aluminum dioxide’s level of hardness is rivaled only by diamond. Who knew?!

Above: Aberdeen in Woodstock Oak from Kronotex. At right: Chalet Vista White Weathered Pine from Mohawk Laminate.

54

Go green These days, many people are concerned with the impact their choices have on the environment. Laminate floors that have been NALFA certified are guaranteed to be a green building material. This will guarantee that your floor is made from recycled materials, require no toxic adhesives to install, and will not emit chemical toxins into the air of your home. Laminate is also not a contributor to deforestation because the only wood used in its production is lumber industry by-products like sawdust and wood pulp that would have been otherwise wasted. When all is said and done, laminate flooring is definitely worthy of its newfound popularity and don’t forget to ask your flooring dealer about laminate used in focal wall appications! ■

RUG S

Of all of the accessories out there to add a little razzle-dazzle to a room, area rugs are easily the best. With their unending variety of textures, colors, and patterns, a strategically placed area rug can take any space and turn it from drab to fab with pretty much zero effort.

The Fringe Effect: 5 Ways Area Rugs Can Make a Room Pop So, an effort to spread the gospel of area rugs to the masses here is a quick and dirty rundown of the five ways area rugs can help you transform the look of your home.

At right: Matrix from Oriental Weavers. Opposite page left: Swag shag rug from Tuftex. Right: Sereno from Karastan.

56

FABULOUSfloors

They really do tie the room together! Area rugs are a great way to bring together all of the design elements present in the room they occupy. By choosing a rug with complimentary colors, you create a sort of anchor for the design elements that acts as a focal point for the eye, as it takes in the rest of the decor. Much the way a well laid out painting will cause the eye to wander from element to element, a well laid out room with a well chosen rug will give the eye license to wander.

Area rugs set the tone of a room Area rugs are a great way to establish the vibe of a room. For instance, in rooms with lots of natural light, a cooler colored rug will add an air of calmness whereas deeper, richer colors tend to lend a space an air of intimacy. If you’re looking to open up a space and make it seem roomier, you can’t go wrong with lighter, brighter colors.

Q4 2017

57

RUG S

They’re a great way to establish flow One of the best hacks for blending design elements from one room to the next is to choose area rugs that combine colors and tones of the two rooms you want to get to play nice with one another. This is a great way to create a continuity between two rooms that might otherwise be a bit jarring to the eye, due to somewhat contrasting decor. By bridging the design elements of one room to the next, you give your home a more open, and inviting feel.

They’re perfect for creating islands of intimacy By placing an area rug under two or more pieces of furniture, you create the psychological illusion of separateness from the rest of the room. This lends the space a feeling of coziness that is conducive to conversation with friends, or relaxation alone. You can use the same technique to tie bookshelves to armchairs to create a comfortable little reading space or, if your home doesn’t have a dedicated office space, you can seamlessly blend your computer desk area into just about any room just by tossing a rug under it.

Acoustic Beauty Good design goes beyond simple looks. If you truly want to create a beautiful space, there are other things to consider. Rugs are a great way to kill ugly echoes in spacious rooms and also minimize the noise of footfalls for an overall increase in general serenity. ■ 58

COOL TOOLS Dear Reader,

C

ongratulations—you’re a homeowner! It’s very exciting to own your own home, and a little scary too.

There’s so much to know about how your home works and

what products are right for you. And you’re new to this, so you search online and in magazines for advice and ideas. But it’s hard to sort the good information from the bad. But have no fear, dear reader! Alex is here to help. If remodeling is on your list (and honestly, what homeowner isn’t constantly remodeling?) then flooring surely is a part of that. The choices in flooring today are mind boggling— tile that looks like wood; vinyl that looks like marble; and what is LVT, anyway? Read on, for some insight into the wonderful

Flooring 101 Alex Ross

world of flooring so that you can choose what’s right for your family and your lifestyle.

Where do I start? Thanks to printing and manufacturing technology, you can get almost any look you want in a product that’s right for your home. Wood (traditional, rustic, or exotic), slate, stone, marble or decorative tile are just a few. Think about what look you want for your room.

Next? Next, think about the room’s use. Is it a kitchen, the hub of the home, where there is lots of activity? Or a bath or laundry that’s subject to get wet? Is it an entryway that gets a lot of foot traffic? Or a living room or bedroom, that get somewhat lighter use?

62

FABULOUSfloors

The choices in flooring today are mind boggling—tile that looks like wood; vinyl that looks like marble; and what is LVT, anyway?

And then what? Then, consider the product type you might want. • Hardwood provides the ultimate in elegance and warmth but can be subject to some wear and tear in busy households. Also check out Engineered hardwood—it’s still real hardwood and can be installed on a slab or in a basement (where solid hardwood cannot go). • Laminate is often almost impossible to distinguish from wood, and is very durable and easy to maintain, but be careful about water. Some manufacturers now have moisture resistant laminate so if it’s going in a wet area, make sure you check for that. • Ceramic or porcelain tile comes in hundreds of natural looks and offers beauty and durability, but it can be slippery as well as hard on feet (and dropped dishes). • Resilient (or sheet vinyl) is incredibly versatile —it comes in natural as well as decorative patterns and is completely water resistant, as well as soft underfoot. • And LVT (Luxury Vinyl, as well as its cousin, WPC) is a durable plank or tile look that offers durability, easy maintenance and—in some formats—an attached pad on the back that helps dampen sound. At top: Mannington Resilient Penny Lane Quartzite; above: Mannington Hardwood Smokehouse Maple Ash.

Now that you’ve got a little something to go on, go do some of your own research (flooring manufacturer websites, social media, etc). Then visit your local flooring retail store. I always advocate for shopping local. They have a vested interest in making you happy because they’re right there in your community. They’re experts in what they sell, can give you advice to help you make the best choices for your home, and will be there to help before, during and after the sale. ■ Good luck, and happy shopping!
