The existing intention of the Brookings Allee is to extend forest park into the campus creating a continuous line from Lindell Ave. to Brooking’s Hall. I intend to keep that character of the lawn by keeping the linear quality, but slightly altering it to include various speeds of traffic and different scales of landscape elements. Firstly, flanking either side of the lawn are the roadways - these have been kept as existing to avoid the demolition and construction of new asphalt. Large Sugar Maples will be used to replace the aging Pin Oaks. These trees provide great fall colour, however do not do well in salted areas, so the reducing of salting Brooking’s Drive in the winter is encouraged. Instead, snow plowing this main drive would be most beneficial. Beside each main line of Sugar Maples will be bike lanes, one for each direction of travel. Between the Bike Lanes and walking lanes will be a line of small more ornamental trees. These will be planted in pairs to accommodate moderate Plan and Section - New Brookings Allee Margot Shafran PLANTING DESIGN A48.452 March 19, 2015

diversity in the landscape. The Plants chosen are the Paperback Maple, and the Spring Snow Crabapple. While non-native, the Paperback Maple has great winter interest with its exfoliating bark. The Crabapple was chosen for its magnificent white bloom in the spring time. Flanking either side of the pedestrian pathway will be a plant bed for smaller perennials. Here will be a diverse selection of plants that add a scale more appealing to the human within the compositions. The entire selection of plants attempts to create visual appeal during all seasons, representative of this allee as the entrance to the university. All plants where chosen for their ability to grow in full sun and tolerate medium water.

PROJECT INTENTIONS The goal of this garden is to collect rain from the Givens Hall parking lot sheet flow and create a vegetated separation from the car area and the human walking space. In addition to mediating water and directing it into the earth instead of our sewer system, the gardens creates space for defined seating areas which do not yet exist along this artery connecting givens hall to Brookings drive. On the parking side of the garden, the curb lifts allowing water to then drop into a deep (3ft) basin lined with gravel and sand, then filled with appropriate planting soil. Along this linear drop, sedges align the space defining the edge between parking and people. To their west, some more floral herbaceous perennials are used which are also then used along the eastern bank of the rain garden. These banks flow from sidewalk grade down into the water basin and are planted with both ornamental perennials, as well as shrubs that will effectively hold the bank from eroding. Along this bank are also river birch trees and a black maple to even more effectively soak up water from this basin.
