Jour, Journal, Journey Entry: Danielle Delaney Day Recorded: 2nd August 2017. The day recorded in my entry is about the simple treasures in life - what is overlooked as a stay-at-home mother. Lately I have been away from the domestic side of things, out in the workforce. But on this day, I found myself back at home, realising again just how blessed I am to have this moment to enjoy the precious early years with my 2-year-old son before he grows up. These moments are worth more than any riches. Half of the entry was recorded on the day; the other half was inspired from photographs I took throughout the busy day. Page Page Page Page Page Page

Jim Fleckenstein Jour, Journal, Journey Entry: Jim Fleckenstein - Atlanta Georgia, USA Day recorded: Wednesday, September 13, 2017 I began journaling earlier this year as a way to learn from those outings. I generally record, via crude sketches, what I would like to accomplish on those days and list out where I plan to be. Since my intentions are to learn, I don’t shy away from writing down why some shots didn’t work and I try to be critical on how I can improve my photographs the next time I go out. Only recently have I begun to sketch out parts of my day; a visit to a museum or if I see something that I’d like to go back to later on, I add those to my journal. The day I chose for this project followed two days of stormy weather, thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Irma. Here are my entries for this day’s journal (8 pages): 1) A number of experimental night shots of cars headlights/taillights, streetlights and brightly colored store signs. Captured while moving (safely), they resulted in pure black backgrounds with bright, neon light trails. Page one includes a pull out to show the learning that took place on the timing for how long to leave the shutter open. 2) A brilliant abstract photo that included a mix of colors, which appear to dance across the page, was my reward!
3) Several shots taken along the shoreline of Lake Lanier in the North Georgia Mountains, while waiting for the sun to peek through. I experimented using several combinations of ND (neutral density) filters that darken the subject by several settings. The darkening filters allowed me to increase the length of the shots, which in turn softens the look of the photographs for anything in motion - in this case the movement of the clouds and waves of the lake. 4) This Lake Lanier photo was achieved by removing one of the ND filters allowing the capture of more sunlight, contrasts and colors. 5) I stopped at my favorite local coffee shop for an espresso macchiato and crepe, while doing some of the editing. 6) After my lunch, I went home to assess my yard after the storm, happy to find nothing significant in the way of damage. 7) Piedmont Park is a large multi-use park located in downtown Atlanta (about 30 minutes from my home). Piedmont offers a wonderful view of the Atlanta skyline and some of the high-rise buildings can be seen in this panorama. Overcast skies added some drama to the picture as well. 8) I have wanted to try a new way of capturing landscapes and cityscapes that I have not done before; using multiple exposure for one shot. I also have wanted to experiment with the technique that is getting a lot of talk called taking “pinhole camera” shots. I combined the two concepts using a piece of heavy duty paper with a “pinhole” made into it, isolated each image. The combination of the two techniques adds a quirky look the final images.
I had a wonderful time taking the photographs I used for my day’s journal entry. To be a part of this Jour, Journal Journey project, with so many talented and creative people from around the globe, is very humbling. Thank you all for allowing me to include photographs of my day alongside your exquisite entries!
Mieke van Os The art of freedom I’m on my way to Berlin. It’s my second time. Last time my companions were fellow art students, now the main purpose is the Berlin Marathon on the 24th of September. But, not for me. Yes, I’m at the cheering crowd lined up at the sides, yelling to the runners and especially to Flip on his way to the Brandenburg gate: “Almost done!“. Practically tasting the alcohol free beer they are serving at the end, setting a PR. But, by then I’m already on my cultural Odyssee, because it’s my turn to fill the Journal pages! Therefore I did not want to concentrate on the classical art centre, but especially get to grips with the public (free) space. The streets of Berlin and her underground places of culture. Since Berlin is a hot spot of Graffiti Artists. It’s unconventional. Anyplace it’s in the air: all of us just want to be free. Like Kennedy once said: ‘I’m a Berliner. Although the context was different back in the day, Berlin values the idea of all free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin. No matter what, even when you are not born here and do not live here, you’re one of us. Never ever again an iron curtain and a wall. Embracing otherness is embracing oneself. This broad supported conviction is under pressure.
Today there’s not only the marathon, there’s also the election of the Parliament. The prognoses elucidate that times are changing. After we have been visiting the Reichstag a young radiant female student told us while serving dinner late at night. “Many people in Germany, in particular, are worried at present; they are upset about what lies ahead”. Berlin is an extraordinary city with a great but turbulent past. To be clear, I’m not an activist or politically driven in anyway, but being in Berlin I’m more conscious of the fact that freedom is in and of itself good, valuable, worthwhile, essential to being human. Inspired by the artists I used a mixture of life and reconstructed drawing (ink, charcoal, graphite pensel, acryllic paint and chalk pastel, decopage and collage technique, some needle work- casting - and a verse in mix media. Met vriendelijke groet, Mieke van Os
Marharyta Kaliuzhna, Ukaraine Friday, 18th August 2017 Midnight. We sit at the rail station and wait for our train. We are going to Kyiv. Exactly we have decided to change our lives and moved to another city. There are many emotions in my minds. Am I crazy? Is it the good idea? During our journey, I am looking for the answers to my questions. My conclusion: Yes, I am crazy. 5.07. We are in Kyiv and catch the taxi. Our new home. It’s the big building and our flat on the tenth floor. I don’t like the apartments. I live all my life in the house with the small garden where the flowers were planted by my mother and we may sit, drink a cup of coffee with a tasty cake and just simply keep silence. But the good news it’s the church. It is situated opposite our new home. 9.00. I go to my new workplace. It’s the innovative school. Hope I would realize my ideas and discover the potential of my future students. My keywords associated with the classroom.
Oh! Look! My son sees the skull on the bookshelf. The unexpected item is. My son likes to draw. As he says, he is the artist gamer. Do you know this profession? Most of all his pictures about gamers’ heroes and his favorite animal – cat. 14.00. We are in the center of the city. Kyiv. Maydan. Who are we? Why is the identification so important? The challenge starts today. And everyone is active influencers on the local level. Believe. 19.00. We are at home. Little be sad. And ring. My daughter calls us. She is the musician. Listen. Composer is A.Cos-Anatolsky. 23.00. The seeing from our window is bright. Hope and next day would be brilliant. Good night!
Jour Journal Journey Entry Sonia Roychowdhury, New Delhi (India ) Day recorded : 22nd November, 2017 Being an artist I wanted to share my day through my art. India is a vast country with many different states & culture. We have many folk or tribal art forms practiced in different parts of the country. I have chosen 2 art forms : 1) Madhubani & 2) Warli Madhubani art or Mithila painting is practiced in the Mithila region of India. Painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments. The painting was traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas. Warli painting is a style of tribal art made by the tribals from the North Sahyadri Range in India.Traditionally, this painting is done on a red ochre background with white paint and these are the only two colours used. But, today, a variety of colours are being used to replicate these artistic motifs on fabrics, home dĂŠcor or other artistic forms.
I chose this day as I had to attend a wedding ceremony and I wanted to share a part of my tradition & culture through my paintings along with the daily routine. Page 1 - Madhubani painting of the Sun & Surya Namaskar (Sun salutation). Used acrylic paint & nib pen . Page 2 - Madhubani painting of birds.Used acrylic paints, nib pen and special Madhubani art paper. Page 3 - Madhubani painting of fish. Used acrylic paints, nib pen and special Madhubani art paper. Page 4 - Warli painting of Tree with kids on swings. Used acrylic paints & nib pen. Page 5 - Warli painting of a wedding procession. Used acrylic paints, watercolours & nib pen. Page 6 - Warli painting of wedding function/ performance. Used acrylic paints, watercolours & nib pen. Page 7 - A mix of Madhubani & Warli styles of painting. Used acrylic paints & nib pen. Made a Madhubani painting bookmark for the book using Madhubani art paper, acrylic paints & nib pen.
It was a beautiful experience being able to take part in this project & share my day with everyone participating in this project. Thank you! Sonia Roychowdhury
