Beat the Heat By Sarah Palmer Exercising in the heat isn’t necessarily dangerous – it’s how you cope with it that is.

E

ach year, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) reminds members of the public to be aware of the warning signs of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other forms of heat-related illness. Those who are new to the country, or who haven’t experienced such extremes of temperature before, may not realise the importance of keeping an eye on your health during the summer months, especially if trying to maintain an active lifestyle. Both the exercise in question and the air temperature can combine to raise the core body temperature. Factor in humidity and the body will have an increased problem cooling itself down. Mild to moderate dehydration can usually be reversed by drinking more fluids. However, severe cases of dehydration and heat-related illneses are medical emergencies and require immediate treatment. Left untreated, heatstroke can damage the brain, heart, kidneys and muscles and cause long-term complications. Of course sunburn, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur at any time of the year.

Heat-related illnesses are more common in Qatar during the summer months though due to the high temperatures and humidity levels. Those most at risk are young children, older adults and those taking medication that increase sensitivity to sunlight, as they cannot adjust to changes in environmental conditions as quickly as healthy adults. Exposure to the sun is a good way of the body getting Vitamin D and improving bone health. However, plan any exercise – even walking – either early in the morning or late at night to avoid direct exposure between 10 am and 3 pm when the sun is at its strongest – and always wear sunscreen. The body will be sweating more, so you may need to include sport drinks or add electrolyte tablets or rehydration sachets to water to add salts back to your body. Plan to drink a lot more than usual, and if necessary, tailor workouts to include shorter stints. If you do start to feel unwell, get out of the sun immediately and either go to a shaded area or if possible, somewhere with air conditioning. Lower body temperature by removing heavy clothing, apply a cold compress and rehydrate with water. You should start to feel better within 30 – 45 minutes. If you suspect heatstroke, dial 999 and seek emergency assistance. NB: Ramadan is due to start on 24 April (to be confirmed) and will last either 29 or 30 days. Please bear in mind that you cannot drink or eat in public during daylight hours. If exercising at a gym or taking a fitness class during the day in Ramadan, check the club’s policy first regarding having water bottles and other beverages or food visible. If you are fasting, HMC recommends exercising in the evening or indoors, and to drink two to three litres of water between iftar and suhoor. m ©

Back Into the Ring with Super Slam II

W

restling lovers rejoiced at everyone’s favourite Pro Wrestling show, Super Slam, returned to Qatar for a second edition on 21 February 2020. Brought by Qatar Pro Wrestling (QPW), Super Slam II featured wrestling giants from the US, the UK, France, South Africa, Canada, Austria and Mexico. Over 35 wrestling champs presented an exclusive show at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena (Lusail Sports Arena). The titans of the ring attending the championship show include wrestling legends Eric Bischoff, The Great Khali, Kevin Nash, Mark Henry, ‘Road Warrior’ Animal together with WWE superstars Alberto del Rio, Rob Van Dam, PJ Black, Brian Cage, nZo, Matt Sydal, Rich Swann, Chris Raaber, Alofa, Caprice Coleman, Brian Pillman Jr, Apolo, Carlito, Chris Masters, Matt Cross, Johnny Storm, Jody Fleisch and Mil Muertes. Well-known American wrestling legend, entrepreneur, television producer, professional wrestling booker, podcast host, and on-screen personality, Eric Bischoff recently joined QPW as General Manager. According to QPW Chairman, Ali Marafi, QPW was founded to build a pro wrestling community in the region and to encourage local talent. The QPW Academy was built in 2015 to provide regular training to local talent in the hope that one day they can star in the ring together with international wrestling stars. QATAR SPORTS E-GUIDE ©

'The popularity of wrestling goes back to the 80’s and 90’s with World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It was the time of Hulk Hogan and the Undertaker who grabbed the attention of an international audience. The Arab region loves wrestling entertainment. As per viewers statistics last year, wrestling comes second only to football in popularity. The best thing about wrestling is that it is loved by everyone, young and old and from all parts of the world. Though most wrestling fans are male, every year, we see an increase in female viewership,' said Marafi. To date, QPW have successfully managed four QPW events. Three of these were held in Qatar, and one in Sudan. QPW Event: The Beginning 2013 – Doha, Qatar; QPW Souq Waqif Storm 2015 – Doha, Qatar; QPW Sudan Power 2016 – Khartoum, Sudan; and QPW Super Slam 2017 – Doha, Qatar. QPW incorporates the Qatari image into their wrestling profile, which is exactly why they specifically requested for Qatari fighting superstar Ali Alnaemi to be a part of their wrestler line up in their events. Alnaemi was successfully featured in QPW’s Super Slam. QPW also runs QPW Academy – the first academy in the Middle East and North Africa that can fulfil the ambitions of Arabs who want to become professional wrestlers. QPW aims to provide opportunities by teaching integrity, character and leadership in and out of the ring.
