This beautiful Butterfly Swirl is inspired by the nonpareil paper marbling of old (not sure what a nonpareil pattern looks like? Check out the beautiful handmade paper that inspired this tutorial for a good example!). Four different tones create dynamic complex and rich patterns both on top of the soap and within the bars themselves. It is the perfect recipe for giving these new swirl tools a whirl. 8 oz Coconut Oil (76 degree) 10 oz Lard 8 oz Palm Oil 5 oz Olive Oil 2 oz Safflower Oil 4.5 oz Lye 10.5 oz Liquid (water or milk in my case) 10.5oz 2 oz. Rustic Escentuals body safe fragrance oil The superfat on this is 7%
Recipe: Olive Oil – 7 oz Palm Oil – 10 oz Coconut Oil – 7 oz Castor Oil – 2 oz Avocado Oil – 2 oz Water – 8 oz Sodium Hydroxide – 3.85 oz For this you’re going need to cut a piece of cardboard to divide your mold length wise and bend a wire coat hanger to fit inside your mold.
Then remove the divider pulling it straight up and out. I thought it would look cool to shoot some black down the middle to add to the swirl. Unfortunately my soap got a bit thick and it didn’t go down as far as I wanted. But it still worked out okay.
Then take your coat hanger and put it down to the bottom of your mold. Move the coat hanger side to side as you’re pulling upward. This should swirl the pink and the white into each other a bit. Mine got a bit thick so the swirl was not as pronounced as I would have liked. Then you can take a skewer and swirl the black stripe on top. I just did straight lines but you can also use a circular motion for a cool effect.
Wednesday, August 15, 2012 Ultra Violet - New Soap & New Style I’ve had this Ultra Violet fragrance for a while and it was sort of in the back of my mind that I wanted to do a really funky, mega purple soap. I thought it’d look really good against a really white soap, it’d help to accentuate the swirls and colours. Of course, Ultra Violet couldn’t be any other colour than purple really could it? Well, yes violet but that’s purple! Ultra Violet is made using our new Triple Milk formula of Buttermilk, Goatsmilk & Coconut Milk (regular readers will know how much I love to use milks in my soaps and why use one when you can use three?!) along with Aloe Vera, White Clay, Colloidal Oatmeal & my absolute favourite Wild Silk.
I have a new favorite soap and here it is! This bar just screams Merry Christmas to me. First of all I love cranberries anyway, but cranberries and Christmas just go together. This bar smells likes fresh cranberries, not too sweet, not too tart. Mouth watering, great scent for Fall, Holidays and year round. It is topped with a sprinkle of glitter for a frosty look.
I’m so glad that I was able to participate in this month’s soap challenge :) Between the end of the school year, house guests and a trip to Naples, I wasn’t sure that I could pull it off! I made this soap the night before our trip and was hoping to cut and photograph the following morning. My soap was still soft in the morning, so I ended up taking it (and a couple of others) on the road with me...the cutting, photography and uploads were all done in the hotel...hope you enjoy and thanks so much for taking the time to check out my soap...
