History of the site: The most recent planned condition on-site is traced back to the garden of the Duke of Osuna, as pictured on a historic map (1872). The garden was progressively destroyed as a consequence of land filling that resulted in the creation of the current topography. Basic research on the landscape organization of the Duke of Osuna garden on-site, and parallel research on the famous Jardin El Capricho (Alameda, Madrid) that also belonged to the Duke of Osuna family, offered the valuable recognition of common organizational components. The central reference feature is a linear walk, a mall, a straight axis that links key elements of the plan [buildings, concentric piazzas or other loci] while offering the enjoyment of botanical gardens and man-made nature. Expanding sideways from the central mall, series of gardens develop, interlinked or separated by diverse thematic features, the caprichos [folies], event spaces. Building Program: The intention is to provide top level facilities positioned optimally as to minimized visual impact. The ongoing public consensus towards construction denial generates a conceptual schism. A status of visual “non-existence” is desired for the required facilities, yet the primary challenge of the outset is the definition of a visual identity. In other words visual identity is simultaneously desired and denied. The basic design tactic of the project is to hide the programmed enclosed spaces within strategic zones of the existing topography, yet to offer optimal accessibility and livable environmental conditions [daylighting, natural ventilation, etc.]. The scheme offers quasisubterranean building volumes that act as extensions of the topography. Embedded within the natural contours, their tops act as circulation platforms taking advantage of the ascending topography.

Function + Form: the buildings respond to the programmatic outset providingthe prescribed areas and environmental conditions. The form is a simple roofplate on tubular steel columns and the exterior wall is an independent lightweight structure - primarily transparent. The modernist ensemble denied further formal articulation and permits maximum flexibility and accessibility. The facilities are uncompromised and simultaneously do not impose their presence at the urban scale.

Jardin Revival? Indeed the project embodies the organization of historic gardens based on the principle of a linear monumental walk; the mall. This isa powerful conceptual tool bridging the contemporary intervention with the historic past. However it is not the goal of the project to imitate traditional gardens or forms at large. Reproducing the geometries of a historic garden is not a central design priority. The concept becomes an organizational tool in resolving the complex issues of public circulation and movement across the site. The project is not a historicist nor nostalgic confrontation with the past and the present, however it recognizes the significance of the local heritage and attempts to strengthen the urban identity by recalling elements of life in former decades. The design team is not a postmodern neither conservationist group, it is only responding directly to locality and absorbs all its “contents, information, characteristics and idiosyncrasies.

Feasibility: it is recognized that an urban project will be primarily adopted and accepted by the local community if a new public domain is offered. Spatially this translates into new connection routes for pedestrians and cyclists along with a series of public amenities and destinations zones. Such a scheme emphasizes upon the civic role of the site as an open-access amenity that combines private uses.

THE UTAH ART [ERIES]

Interconnecting the cultural amenities in blocks 69/70 was the point of departure for this proposal. The concept is to interconnect the disparate arts groups & cultural amenities of the city with a new circulatory system that distribute people and ideas around the city’s body from the cultural heart. The sixty nine seventy creative nucleus accommodates three protagonists: The Utah performing arts center, the Utah film and Media arts center and the Jessie Eccles Quinney center for dance. The main street funnel facilitates interaction between them. It works as a heart for the whole city. It holds an elevated plateau offering dramatic views across the main street axis. The snow on the Wasatch front from one side and the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake reflect on the new white pavilions. The main street passers hear the music from above. Curiosity drives them to the raised platform. There is an event going on. Is it a live theater or a screening? The theater goers come out of the UPAC and join the crowd. The cinephiles come out of Utah Arts Theater and come together. The local artists come together… The local artists take pride… The cultural heart is pulsating….

The location of the pavilion gives us an inspiring starting point. Piazza Castello is at the centre of a busy area with important public amenities and historical monuments that define Torino’s identity and atmosphere. It is a shared urban space of intense activity and interaction. In this dense social landscape we imagine our pavilion being not a strictly enclosed space antagonistic its surroundings but a tectonic intervention that captures the flows and excitement of the place. Our design borrows the landscape of topography to highlight the idea that is shaped by forces, flows and network paths rather than pre established hierarchies. This shift is clearly elaborated in the synthesis of the spaces in two main ways: -by extending the pedestrian path through the pavilion -by allocating as much space as possible for public use

axonometric

More than an information point we see the pavilion as an opportunity to transmit some essential qualities of architecture that may arouse the public interest. So what can these qualities be?

Jardin del grande

These two organizational aspects create a structure which is highly permeable and offers a variety of in between spaces. This way we achieve a blurring of the archetypal dichotomies of architecture: public - private and interior exterior. The language of topography also hints at another important quality of architecture: that of programmatic density. We believe our design can produce a surprising form that will attract attention and create a place where people may pass through on their way, or relax and enjoy the surrounding views.

Believing in a sustainable idea we accomplished to produce a design that meets the requirement and needs of modern time.

Timber an energy efficient material with minimum environmental impact is used as the main structural construction element and soft wood timber is used to fill and produce the step form of our pavilion. Natural ventilation and lighting is succeeded through the permanent openings used as walkways Κn combination with the outer skin passage and step gaps of the roof structure. Bolted joint components are used to assembly the whole structure achieving the easiness of dismantle and reassemble the pavilion.

Re-Design a low energy traditional house_CRETE

Jardin del grande

My thesis focused on the energy efficient features of traditional Cretan houses which can be preserved and re-used. I attempted not only to provide evidence that traditional settlements carry valuable information of efficiency but more importantly to work towards defining a way to translate this information in new building fabrics. The area of study will be Chania, one of the four prefectures in Crete, which has an extensive folk architectural tradition. Most of the traditional houses are located in the villages and have long been abandoned because of the massive migration of the indigenous population towards the urban centres where life is an amalgamation of modern values with a traditional spin and traditional values with a modern spin. Proposal _ ground floor plan

The new conceptual design is about respect the history to the site, thus preserve the character of the existing building and to demolish the least possible. Demolishing is not an environmental approach as well, as the embodied energy required to rebuild it is much higher than to renovate it. The materials from the demolished part will be reused for the new construction. The design principles are the following: • Keep the ground floor layout with the internal courtyard and renovate it, as it is the most historical part of the building and represents the history of the site and the traditional Cretan residential typology.

Jardin del grande axonometric

This house exists since the beginning of the 20th century and my family owns it. As today the house is abandoned it is their wish to bring new life to it. It is a spacious two-storey dwelling with an internal courtyard designed according to the folk architectural tradition of the island. It is located by the central square of the village. Therefore its reuse can offer a lot to the community. It can be used as a family house and even provide space for an exhibition of traditional folk craftworks where the public can meet local people and find information about the area and its history.

• Demolish most of the first storey building, as it was a later addition and reuse the materials for the new construction. • The new part will be built on legs to hover above the old thus adding a new layer of history to the site and protecting the existing structure. • The new structure will be a slender reinforced concrete 3d grid, used as a framework for the new part. • The reinforced concrete 3d grid has a double meaning: protecting the old part by not bringing its structural load on it as it is already quite fragile and shading the windows on the east side. On the grid can be attached different fabrics for external shading such as louvers, fabric canopy or plant foliage protecting the east windows especially in the summer that the sun rays are very low in the horizon, while creating an aesthetically pleasant result.

Renovation of an apartment in Athens

Proposal _ floor plan

37

This apartment has a great advantage as it is located next to a park and offers very nice views. The intention was to connect the interior to the exterior by using natural materials, fabrics and colors. The previously heterogeneous & incoherent interior is now united by the consistent use of white painted walls & monochrome materials. The marble floor was preserved, the walls were painted white and the fireplace was restored by the reconstruction of a concrete base / seating area. The kitchen was renovated and became part of the living room by placing a central corian table that divides and interconnects the spaces. The bath areas have been totally transformed; the small size bathroom has a retro atmosphere in contrast to the main bathroom which is much more minimal with cement tiles, corian bench – washbasin and plywood cabinets.

Renovation of an apartment in Athens The suspended bookcase is one of the several multifunctional wooden furniture pieces that have a dominant place in the living room. It consists of several size boxes with perforated doors which can be illuminated at night. The TV set can be hidden within the central box, creating a harmonious composition.Plywood panels with a strong grain were used to construct the bookcase boxes, which add warmth and textural interest to the otherwise minimal white spaces. The idea is to create furniture that includes most of the functions required: shelves, TV, storage, etc., and will resemble like an art installation.

39

40

Beauty salon in Athens The first stages in the renovation were to paint the walls, add a new concrete floor and install a series of semi-transparent plexy glass partitions to divide the interior and let in more light. The concept was to create multifunctional central furniture that will accommodate all services such as make up, manicure & pedicure while offering a sense of continuity. The white, black and grey color was chosen to enhance the light and to create strong graphic contrast. To make clients and customers feel at home the lobby/waiting area contains two colorful ipanema chairs with tree trunk tables aside. The owner of the salon is a talented make-up artist; therefore we created a series of pictures with examples of her work on the wall behind the reception desk.

The clients wish was to design a jewelry stand that can be reused for another expo and can be constructed in different arrangement if necessary. Therefore we constructed an expo stand with modular interlocking pieces that can be combined in different ways. The concept was to have the display items placed in suspended plexy-glass spheres. The illuminated spheres create an interesting shadow pattern on the floor, making the promenade even more atmospheric.
