CONCEPT

To me, design is a connection between a person and the product. In finding this connection, I develop a compulsion to find the right colors, an obsession for alignment, and fascination for finding the perfect type. After getting into a design frenzy, many long hours and revisions, a very heavenly and satisfying feeling overcomes me: a feeling that many designers feel when the fruits of our labor take form on the finished product.

PURSUIT BREWERY

BACKGROUND

D E TA I L S

Given the option to either use a real brand or create one, this project was made with the intention of showing how a concept and graphic style can be applied consistently throughout the different flavors of a product. Pursuit Craft Beer, based in San Francisco, is a ficticious brewery, created specifically for that purpose.

DISCIPLINE > IDENTITY > PA C K A G I N G PRINT UX/UI

S T R AT E G Y

Most people love a good beer, and they enjoy it in the company of friends or coworkers after an overwhelming day at work. This well-known trend has inspired the creation of Pursuit, a brewery that celebrates the individual and their way of living. No matter what you do, we all deserve a beer, two or more after a long, grueling, nine-to-five work day. The labels, resembling a banknote, each depict a different character on the job. The approach I selected involves a lively inking illustration style and a vibrant color palette, connecting each flavor to its corresponding character.

Speedo, currently the world's leading swimwear brand, is passionate about swimming and the struggles necessary for any athlete to become a champion. The company offers a training gear line that helps improve their performance in the aquatic sports. The introduction of a new type of technology resulted in a need for a new look.

DISCIPLINE IDENTITY > PA C K A G I N G PRINT UX/UI

S T R AT E G Y

During highschool, I had the opportunity to take part in the swim team. The harsh training sessions, thrill of competitive swimming, and the physics of movement in water initiated the inspiration behind the packaging. The concept was based on the MoirĂŠ pattern, to emmulate the flow of water. The box has two assembly parts: the main structure and a sleeve. Along with the intention of creating an optical illusion, the sleeve's movement uncovers hidden information about the product and its die-cut interacts with the pattern beneath.

Developing strong connections is important to one's growth. Interacting and remaining in touch with colleagues, friends, and family helps in creating mutually beneficial relationships. Because of social media, there is pressure for kids to network online. This creates an opportunity for Pinata, a kid-oriented social media app.

Cyberbullying and privacy issues are some of the biggest concerns that a parent needs to face. Children deserve an online hangout that is just as engaging and entertaining as it is secure. The development of this mobile app allows the parent to monitor their child's digital footprint. Just like a piĂąata at birthday parties, this mobile app is filled with surprises. An intriguing yet heavily illustrated approach was chosen to entice its young audience. The combination of the minimal illustration style and the vibrant color palette evokes a feeling of being unharmed and out of danger in a zone where parents see their kids flourishing in a safe environment.

Readers and graphic designers alike appreciate well-designed typography. One of the most remarkable female typographers known to the graphic design industry is Carol Twombly. A set of cards was created in celebration of one of her many recognizable and used typefaces: Chaparral, a hybrid slab-serif.

DISCIPLINE IDENTITY PA C K A G I N G > PRINT UX/UI

S T R AT E G Y

The font is named after Twombly’s hometown's geographical region, in Martinez, California. Chaparral is known as a shrubland landscape of the region, and it serves as the main concept. Geographic elements have been used as part of the graphic style to illustrate how the design of the typeface is linked to the origin of its name. A die was used for the creation of the cardset to create the effect of Californian hills, shrubs and mountains seen from a distance.

Once a year, The Society for Experiential Graphic Design has a conference for the industry of design and architecture on wayfinding systems. segd connects people to places by planning, designing, and building experiences. The event attendance has grown every year, attracting leaders in the industry and professionals alike.

DISCIPLINE IDENTITY PA C K A G I N G > PRINT UX/UI

Wayfinding systems and signage design, when done efficiently, helps people navigate the space and orient themselves. How the human brain processes visual information and cues obtained from the environment sparked the idea for the book and poster. The printed matter was designed resembling a physical space with signage that guides the reader through the layout from page to page. The use of a vibrant color palette was meant to grab the reader's attention, similar to that of elevators, maps, and other signs in a building.

PURSUIT BREWERY

BACKGROUND

D E TA I L S

What exactly is a gmo? The acronym stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. The process, which involves artificially altering the dna of an organism, has been a world-wide controversy. The lack of knowledge on the topic makes being pro- or anti-gmo more of a trend rather than a well-thought decision.

DISCIPLINE IDENTITY PA C K A G I N G > PRINT UX/UI

S T R AT E G Y

Isaac Asimov stated, “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom. Our stand on being for or against gmos should be based on our knowledge and understanding on the pros and cons of eating genetically modified food. The book was designed to show both sides of the topic, using a unique photography style for each part of the book and a color code. It also uses green and orange to differentiate both the pro- and anti-GMO stands respectively.

Preston’s Ice Cream has been a favorite of the Burlingame community for more than fifty years. From its retro displays and counter tops to its hand-crafted assortment of chocolates, this store takes you back in time. With the arrival of newcomers, the company was in need of a campaign to attract and engage its new audience.

DISCIPLINE IDENTITY PA C K A G I N G > PRINT UX/UI

S T R AT E G Y

Growing up, ice cream has always been present in the happiest moments of my life. Similar to other foods, it can evoke nostalgia. The source of joy is not in the flavors, but the memories that are associated with ice cream. This relation between the two sparked the main concept, allowing the campaign to advance. A heavily illustrated quarterly magazine was the deliverable for the campaign, under the slogan: “Memories come in flavors.” The printed matter promotes three different flavors, represented in a minimal, organic illustration style.

As a leader in innovation, Tesla was chosen as the idea for a retail store with locations in Oslo and San Francisco, called Epoch. Epoch believes that design is powerful and can reshape the minds of an audience: the upper-middle class, highly educated, green friendly and those interested in a healthy and fresh lifestyle.

Epoch represents an essential moment in time. Its product's fearless use of raw materials represents the great diversity, innovation, and character of a realistic Scandinavian design. Their mission statement is to inspire and educate future generations to shift towards a greener conscious future. Because the products use raw materials, the approach had to be powerful with a minimal aesthetic. ./>

Norwegian cuisine is traditionally based on raw materials which are available in Norway, since the country is surrounded by wilderness. It has a strong focus on game and fish. Many of the traditional dishes are results of using preserved materials, with respect to the long winters, and the food is an important aspect of its culture.

SUB BRANDS

Storytelling was used as the main concept for the packaging. Some of the characters represented are reminiscent of the norwegian culture: wild animals, forests and everything eco-friendly. An honest and straightforward look accentuates the culture of Norway and its resources. The typeface, Brandon Grotesque, ads warmth to the products and the red stamp elevates the brand.

Norway's architecture has often been adapted to meet its climatic conditions: harsh winters, high winds and, in its coastal regions, salt spray. With the availability of wood as a building material, Norwegian architecture was primarily focused on its local needs and traditions. This vernacular style is paralleled through Loft's line.

Functionality and workmanship are the primary attributes of scandinavian products. Loft is a line of products that strive for minimalism and function. Creating a product that isn't only appealing but also practical. Resourcing natural materials and aiming to waste as little as it is possible. The visual system consists of minimal photography and a typographic layout that showcases the best attributes of the product. The packaging uses a nordic, yet warm and welcoming color palette reminiscent of home.
