AstroVida:

In the 21st century, humans will begin to travel through the solar system. They will begin the conquest of the Moon and Mars. The knowledge provided by astronomy will be essential. And Chile is playing a leading role in that effort. The most ambitious astronomical research is now under way in a group of observatories using telescopes not found elsewhere on the planet. The coming years promise new and ever grander advanced telescope projects.
Schmidt and Saul Perlmutter to win the Nobel Prize in Physics (2011).
Astronomy is now on the rise in Chile, so we must enthusiastically celebrate the arrival of a means of information that will keep us apprised of the progress occurring every day around the world, and mainly in our country. As a lover of printed matter, I celebrate in particular what we now can read in this wonderfully attractive and informative magazine.

The exceptional quality of its sky, the highest average number of clear nights, low cost and political stability have tilted the scales in favor of our country when decisions must be made on where to install the largest telescopes on the planet. It can be up to one-third cheaper to observe the universe from he Chilean desert.

the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). This line of giant telescopes ends with the largest photographic camera on the planet, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).
The Chilean miracle In Chile, astronomical research began in 1847, when a US Navy expedition placed the first telescopes on Mount Santa Lucia. The government of the time later purchased the instruments, created the National Astronomical Observatory, and relocated the facilities to Mount Calan. One hundred years later, at the start of the 60’s, the first international observatory built on

Also noteworthy are the observatories now under development: Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope (CCAT), Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) and more recently, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), to name a few.

The history of astronomical observation has been marked by the advent of disruptive technology. That technology creates radically new possibilities unforeseen just a few years back. Considering the speed at which technology now advances, telescopes are exceptionally long-living facilities that continue to be prime research tools, thanks to the ongoing renovation of instruments and, of course, the ingeniousness of new generations of astronomers that use them to address new questions.
The 3.6-meter telescope is still amazing after close to fifty years.
