Part 1 Architectural Dissertation:
Intersections of Gender and Politics in the Slums of Philippines
[Un]conventional Gender Identities
This dissertation investigates how gender and politics pose as interrelating factors within slum settlements, specifically The Baseco Slum, as a means to challenge and reconstruct traditional gender identities where women are recognised as the ‘ilaw ng tahanan — light of the home’ and men as the ‘haligi ng tahanan — pillar of the home.’ Through the exploration of how slum dwellers live, work and spatially construct their homes, I evaluate how such lifestyles demonstrate a potential shift away from traditional hierarchal gender systems within a domestic setting.
