The most recent issue Zine Columbia Fall 2013 goes by 26 differnet names. This issue belongs individually to 26 different designers. Each designer titled his or her zine, designed the cover, designed the TOC, wrote and designed a two-page zine feature. Our small early issues were made possible by the advent of indigo process printing which looked like offset but was actually computer generated printing. It was good for short runs of 40 to 60 copies as it was financially expedient. It was used through the Fall of 2004 but proved to be too costly for longer runs. In the Spring of 2005 through the Spring of 2007, with the advent of MADE magazine, we employed offset printing for the several thousand copies for each issue of that publication. It wasn’t until Spring 2009, that we used that same offset printer for 1,000 copies of The Dreaded Biscuits / elcome to Zine Columbia Fall 2013. Thumbs and Knuckles. We were just palying hockey when it hit me, literally! I wasstruck in the eye with a hockeypuck. So many thoughts went through my head as my vision became blurred. Although the hit was painful, I didn’t end up with a black eye or even a scratch. I visited a optometrist to get examined for any possible damage but they did not find anything wrong with my eye.About three years went by, I woke up one morning surprised to see a small dark shadow on the top corner of my eye. It was not irritating nor did it conflict with my vision so I continued with my class schedule and other daily activities. Later throughout the day, the shadow gradually lowered down my eye making me nervous and concerned about my health. After being examined by two optometrists, they quickly sent me home for an emergency retinal detachment surgery. The optometrist told me that waiting even a moment longer, could have left me blind in that eye forever. I was in complete shock that I barely had any time to react. The name of the surgery was Scleral-buckle surgery. This is a common way to treat a retinal detachment. The scleral buckle made of rubber or semi-hard plastic was placed on the outside of the back of my eye and sewn together to keep it in place. The buckle was left in my eye permanently to allow the retinal tear to go back into place. When I walked into the emergency room, my heart was beating faster and faster as they made us wait for the last patient to leave. I was worried I would lose my vision before I went into surgery.

I have never seen my father look so worried. The thought of having my eye cut open made me cringe. We waited about an hour before going in. The time killed me.The moment I woke up from my surgery, I opened my eyes to anexcruciating pain. I could feel my pulse maneuver its way from my eyeball to its temple, to the back of my head. Going into surgery, I imagined strong headaches but much to my surprise, the pain was much more unbearable. It felt like my eye had been yanked o its socket. Instead of a headache throb, it out of was a constant pound that would not let me think of anything else but the pain.As I suffered through the immense pain, I imagined how different my life would be if I lost my vision. How would I have been able to write, draw, and most importantly see my work? Losing my vision would have affected the way I am able to work now. This experience has taught me or allowed me to appreciate the things in life that I took for granted such as my vision. The incident helped humble me and impact me in ways far greater than I could have ever brigh expected. I am grateful that I can see again, but now my vision is brighter.

Scott

was a blonde hair, blue eyed boy who turned out to be a real douchey kid, even at eight years old.

In Pre-K, I experienced my first encounter with the meaning of having a crush. His name was

Mario

Neil

was a play date boy I liked because he'd let me play with his Might Morphin Power Ranger action figures.

.Mario was popular among the girls in Pre-K. He was a very sweet and gentle fellow. Parallel to his cute fashion sense, Mario had a great smile. I never knew how pretty one's smile could be until I saw him laugh and giggle about something. The next three boys were

short

lived.

Everyone has a crush. It is the one thing that can tear you apart, or be a great learning experience. Crushes are what makes the world go round you start them and then you get over them. For me, I was never the boy crazy type. I was the type of girl who the boys thought of as a friend.

my

crush

Michael

on felt like I have actually fallen in love with him; even at the age of 1. I've known him since kindergarten and as we got older, we got closer. But with all crushes, there were complications. Every girl in our grade had a crush on him and he knew that. Once we entered junior high, he got popular while I just stayed in the background. I never did stop liking him, even up until high school.

Paul

And was someone i hung out with at after school care who I thought was cute and nice, but turned out to be yet another mean boy.

. Oh, David... He was my coworker at my first job and I thought he was the funniest guy I'd ever met. David was three years older than me, and to my delusion, I thought that he could be my first real boyfriend. We'd always flirt and make stupid remarks to each other, that I became so infatuated with him. It wasn't until we were at a small party that I embarrassingly professed my love to him in my drunken manner. My friends said that he didn't see me in that way and I tried my best to get overhim. My friendship/lack of relationship with him was an on and off roller coaster. One day I say that I'm over him, the next I say that I'm not. It took me pretty much two years to get over him.

Josh

And then there was ...the crush of all crushes that didn't crush my crushing. not only has he become an important person in my life, he has become one of my bestest friends. almost three years later, i'm so fortunate to still have him around.

(TEASING, PRIMPING, STUFFING)

I’D BE GLITTERED UP AND READY TO GO EACH MORNING. I HAD A THING FOR BROACHES AND TIGHTS, NO MATTER THE WEATHER OR OCCASION. AND I’D TIPTOE DOWN THE STAIRS.

I’M AS FREE AS I’M ALLOWED TO BE. AS FREE AS MY TIGHT JEANS, CRIMPED HAIR AND SHOULDER PADS COULD HANDLE. IF IT . I WANTED TO WALK DOWN THE CENTER OF THE HALL DURING PASSING PERIODS WITH MY SHADES ON, LEAVING PEOPLE TO WONDER WHETHER I COULD SEE THEM STARING. THEY CHATTERED, BUT IT DIDN’T MATTER. OF COURSE I SAW THEM. THE

FACADE WAS MY PLASTIC SHELL,

A BARRIER FOR EVERY MEANIE WHO THREATENED TO TAKE ME DOWN. OTHER GIRLS HAD LACROSSE STICKS AND CHISELED BOYFRIENDS. I HAD A GIANT RECORD COLLECTION. WHEN THEY GOT INVITED TO PARTIES, I PRACTICED CELEBRITY CHOREOGRAPHY IN MY BEDROOM. I WAS AN OUTSIDER IN SCHOOL, AND AN INSIDER AFTER SCHOOL. MY PARENTS PUT UP A FIGHT WHEN I DESCENDED FROM THE SECOND FLOOR IN EMBEDDED FISHNETS AND NEON SCRUNCHIES.

I SUFFERED CAMEL TOE FOR A STAND AGAINST CENSORSHIP, AND I LOST THE BATTLE EVERY MORNING BUT WON THE DAVID BOWIE OF MY DREAMS IN MY HEART.

THIS WASN’T JUST A PHASE.

I WOULD ALWAYS BE THIS WAY. I COULDN’T BE BOUND TO THE CONFINES OF WHAT “NORMAL” MEANT, OR THE BLACK-AND-WHITE WORLD OF DIFFERENCE AROUND ME. I WAS AS HIGH AS MY BANGS AND AS TIGHT AS MY SEQUINED BELT. AND I WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.

“Don’t move. Don’t even breathe.” My voice shook as I focused my eyes to the scene in front of me.

“Why? Is she coming?”The voice of my companion hit my ears in a hushed whisper but further conversation was cut off with a sharp hand gesture.

We looked through the sparse trees to the figure slowly making its way down the grassless ditch heading for the trap we set up. Her movements were cautious, hesitating, and tense. She could sense the stillness in the air. Something was up but her hunger kept her moving forward. My heart thrummed in my chest and I breathed softly; it hung in the cold October night air before it disappeared unnoticed by the figure ahead of us.

Silently she stalked closer inspecting the metal contraption that housed her goal: food. Her tail flicked in agitation as her small paws tried to pull the tin out of the metal housing to no avail. She was hungry and it showed in her eyes. She was determined but anxious to enter the cage. Furrowing my brows in concentration I slowly began to reposition myself while she was focused on the food. Maybe I could sneak around and scare her into the trap.

I carefully and cautiously moved and slid my body around trees, closer and closer. I could feel the eyes of my companion on my back like a weight. The question was hanging in the air but I ignored it and pressed on. I had to try.

With a sharp twist of her head, wide yellow green eyes gazed at my form filled to the brim with fear and alarm. Neither of us moved. Her small form huddled to the side of the cage, calico fur standing on end. I held my ground not moving a muscle, barely allowing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide to occur.

Hunger won the battle of wills and warily the feline turned back to the cage conundrum. I stayed frozen in place not allowing anything more to frighten off the animal in front of me. After what seemed like eternity the small kitten cautiously sniffed the entrance, her eyes glancing at me in trepidation.

All breathing stopped as she made the first step into the cage. Her body was tense, ears erect, eyes wide, whiskers flared and tail straight as an arrow; she was completely ready to bolt at the first sign of danger. The food was so close, her paws even closer to the trigger.

The movements within the cage were adrenalized and frantic. The desperate calls and howls from the cage were drenched in fright. I rushed forward and draped a towel over the cage to prevent bodily damage. Kitten rescue mission: Success.

Donald Wu was born and raised in Chicago. During his time in Columbia College of Chicago, he was pursuing a BFA in graphic design. This was after spending 3 years studying in the science field at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a semester at two different community colleges. Despite the trial and tribulation of going through a drastic transition from the science world into the art world, through the test of time, Donald finally realizes the potential to his creativity and developed a passion for art. Big picture minded, and always striving to improve himself, Donald has the desire to help steer society into a positive direction, whether through his art, or his everyday actions. When Donald is not staring at a computer screen, he engages in other pursuits, such as making music, riding his bike, and photography.

The young lady Elizabeth Aguirre graduated from Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park. When it came to choosing majors, she was not one hundred percent sure what direction to take so she decided to start studying at Illinois State University. It was a great school and an amazing experience for Elizabeth but it was not the school for her. In Spring of 2013, she transferred to Columbia and decided to major in Graphic Design and minor in Marketing. She always had a passion for Art and Design and enjoys learning more and more every day from her professors and peers. She hopes to get a job in a creative Marketing department so that she can live off of doing what she loves and enjoys.

Born in 1989 and raised in the Chiago land area, Derek Green is committed to hard work, education and a career in the graphic design industry. After completing an associates pro- gram at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois Derek relocated to Lincoln Park, Chicago. She now continues on as a senior and majors in Graphic Design. She discovered and fell in love with the concept of branding identities and packaging design. She will graduate in the Spring of 2014 with a B.F.A. Myrene enjoys the beauty of autumn weather and drinking coffee, and cuddling in bed while watching television shows on Netflix. Her inspirations come from fashion. color palettes, photography, and festive food. In her spare time, Myrene enjoys cooking, listening to music, and having wine/beer tasting parties with friends. Myrene hopes to work at a designing firm or a magazine company after graduating.

Alison Tomich is from the boonies of a small Northwest Indiana town. No seriously, her school was even Boone Grove High School. Currently she resides on the Southside of Chicago in Hyde Park. At a young age she enjoyed writing, illustrating books, winning the color-by-number contest each week in kindergarten, and dancing her smelly little toes off. She was always very involved in the arts. For the longest time she knew she was going to be a crime scene investigator. Science and math were obviously her thing...right? It wasn’t until she created her high school’s first ever monthly newspaper, The Howl, that she realized her true passion was designing page layouts and graphics on the computer. Since then she has pursued an education that would take her beyond the imaginable. Her pen tool skills and typeface identification will surely be appreciated when she enters the career world. Tomich is a bit of an anthropologist, serving twice in Ethiopia, Africa she taught AIDS prevention and English as a Second Language. She loves to travel and explore new places, which she hopes to continue when she graduates with her BFA from Columbia College Chicago May of 2014. Einxel Reyes is an illustrator and designer based in Chicago, Illinois. He explores and expresses his ideas through various medias from web to print. In his spare time, he loves to take photographs, go to concerts, and make zines. His design heroes are Debra Kayes, Guy Villa, Duncan Mackenzie, Renee Passmore, and Craig Jobson. His main obsessions include 90s Bulls memorabilia, X-men action figures, and barbeque craftsmanship. If he could compare his life to anything; it would be the scene where Robin Williams figures out how he can see food again and realizes he forgot what it was like to be a lost boy.

Denora Daujatas was born March 22, 1991 in the south suburbs of Chicago. She has always enjoyed art, and made sure it was a part of her education throughout her life. It wasn’t until high school that Denora discovered the field of graphic arts. From then on it became her channel to the art world. Her inspiration comes from friends, family, and the life within the city of Chicago. Denora is now a senior at Columbia College Chicago. She will be graduating in the spring of 2014, starting off her career into the design world.

authors Kristina Kelliher is majoring in Graphic Design at Columbia College Chicago. She is a senior and is aiming to graduate Fall 2013. She has always had a deep passion for art ever since she was little. She enjoyed taking many art classes in Lincoln-Way high school and in Joliet Junior College before transferring to Columbia. She also very much loved the science courses she took and almost transferred to Lewis University in Romeoville for Nursing, but decided against it. Her biggest inspirations are Tim Burton, Walt Disney, Dr. Seuss, and Craig McCracken. Her hobbies include: drawing, writing, reading comic books, playing videogames, and listening to music. One day, she hopes to live in an apartment in a city in order to steer away from her least favorite task: driving. Her biggest goal is to use her art to help others and to continue learning everything she can. She is a creative. An artist if you will.. Art, in all it’s forms is her life! She loves to paint, draw, design and craft. Overall she likes to make things. She absolutely loves live music (yet another art form), although she is no longer a musician. She would however consider herself a dancer, not professionally as she never took lessons but its a great form of creative expression and one of her favorite pass-times. She is a Graphic Design senior at Columbia College Chicago. She thinks that with her degree a lot of doors will open for her, and not just pertaining to graphic design. She has taken a lot away from my classes and the people in them. They have shaped her into the person she is today. Although she is still the quiet introvert she was when she came here, her creativity (even my mind) has only grown thanks to friends and mentors.

Andrew Starosta is a person of many qualitative talents in the field of art and design. He turned his hobby of Illustrating into a career of graphic design. Growing up with an identical twin, his artwork was always up for a brutal critique, and appreciated by his brother, Tom. Although Andrew’s talents with a pencil seemed limitless within the last years of high school, he started to dive into the digital world of graphic design. He found himself in an entry-level position of true inquiry at Columbia College where he gained a better understanding of typography, book design, photography, logo creation, and ways to improve his illustrations. While still applying these practices in the classroom, his growing skill-set landed him a graphic design position at a local sign shop, and most of his free time is spent extending his graphic design talent freelancing. Lucas Leonatti is a graphic and web designer living in the River West neighborhood of Chicago. In addition to web and graphics, Leonatti also explores the realms of photography and printmaking. He is in the process of completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Columbia College Chicago, and anticipates graduation after the fall semester of 2014. As a transplant from a small rural town, Leonatti approaches the arts from both urban and rural perspectives. His design reflects a minimalistic approach by saying a lot without the need for a high volume of supporting graphical elements or ornaments. He seeks to challenge society through his work; pushing boundaries and contesting traditional art and design.
