[PORTFOLIO STATEMENT] THROUGHOUT MY STUDIES IN ARCHITECTURE, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO LEARN AND EXPERIMENT WITH A GREAT VARIETY OF STYLES AND APPROACHES TO DESIGN. ALTHOUGH THESE STYLISTIC DIFFERENCES CAN BE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE PROJECTS PRESENTED, THE PRINCIPLES APPLIED HAVE REMAINED THE SAME. ARCHITECTURE, IN MY OPINION, SERVES MORE THAN JUST ITS’ BASIC FUNCTION AS AN ENCLOSURE OR SHELTER. IT SHOULD PROVOKE DISCUSSION AND INVITE PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE SPACE DIFFERENTLY. ARCHITECTURE, REGARDLESS OF STYLE, SHOULD CREATE HARMONY BETWEEN THE BUILT AND THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS IT SO HEAVILY HOLDS. BY ADHERING TO THESE PRINCIPLES IN MY PROJECTS, THE ARCHITECTURE IS MAINTAINS RESPONSIBILITY AND CREATES DIFFERENT SPACIAL CONCEPTS THAT REFLECT DIVERSE SOCIAL LEVELS. THIS INTENTION COMES ALONG WITH THE INFLUENCE OF ARCHITECTS SUCH AS ALVARO SIZA AND LOUIS KAHN, WHOSE ATTENTION TO SIMPLE DETAIL AND SPACE HAS CREATED SPECTACULAR WORK. BY CONTINUING TO WORK WITH THESE PRINCIPLES AND CONTEMPLATING THE EXAMPLES OF THESE GREAT ARCHITECTS, I HOPE TO CONTINUE CREATING POETIC ARCHITECTURE THAT PRODUCES INTRIGUE AND EXCITEMENT WITHIN THE USER WHILE STILL SERVING IT’S PURPOSE. ALTHOUGH I WOULD LOVE TO CONTINUE LEARNING NEW APPROACHES TO DESIGN, I HOPE THIS WILL LEAD MY FUTURE PROJECTS TO STAY CLEAR AND FOCUSED, WHILE MAINTAINING THE RESPONSIBILITY REQUIRED BY ARCHITECTS.

CONSIDERING THE CITY AND HOW IT RELATES TO INFILL HOUSING WAS WHAT INFORMED THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONCEPT OF CONNECTIONS. THEY ARE MOST PRESENT IN THREE ASPECTS, THE FIRST IS THE CONTEXTUAL RELATION OF THE BUILDING AND THE CITY, THE SECOND IS THE CORRELATION OF VIEWS AND ORIENTATION OF PROGRAM IN RELATION TO THE STREET AND THE THIRD IS THE CONNECTIONS OF PROGRAM CONTAINED WITHIN THE BUILDING PROPOSAL. THE USE OF BUILDING CONCEPTS FROM THE VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE WHILE INTRODUCING MODERN SPECIAL STRATEGIES DRIVES THE DESIGN WHICH DEVELOPED INTO TWO EQUAL VOLUMES REFLECTED IN PLAN AND SECTION, AND ON A MICRO-SCALE IN THE DIVISION OF EACH INDIVIDUAL UNIT. THE MATERIALS USED, MAINLY BRICK AND WOOD, ARE INSPIRED BY OLD SAVANNAH BUT ARE USED IN A MORE CONTEMPORARY APPROACH FOR THE INFILL HOUSING, CREATING A GIVE AND TAKE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW CONCEPTS.
“
EACH SPACE IS THEN TAILORED TO THE RESIDENT ARTIST LIVING THERE. THE ARCHITECT AND FILMMAKER ARE MORE STRUCTURED PROFESSIONS WHICH IS REFLECTED IN THE ORGANIZATION OF SPACE AND CIRCULATION IN THE GARDEN FACING UNITS WHILE THE STUDIOS THE SCULPTOR AND ARTIST RESIDE IN PERMIT FOR CONSTANT CHANGE OF THE SPACES AND ALLOW FOR CONSTANT COMMUNICATION TO THE MAIN STREET. LIGHT ENTRY IS ALSO A REFLECTION OF PROGRAM AND ORGANIZATION BY KEEPING LOWER GALLERY LEVELS TRANSPARENT AND PERMEABLE AND ADDING SHADING DEVICES IN THE UPPER LEVELS WHERE MORE PRIVATE LIVING QUARTERS ARE LOCATED. PROGRAM IS ALSO LINKED ACCORDING TO LEVEL OF PRIVACY. THIS COULD BE SEEN IN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WORK SPACES ON THE SECOND FLOOR AND GALLERIES ON THE FIRST AND LIVING SPACES AND BEDROOMS ON THE THIRD AND FOURTH FLOORS. THE SUGGESTED EMPHASIS ON CONNECTIONS AND STUDY OF MATERIALS IS THE PROPOSED SOLUTION TO LINKING TRADITIONAL SAVANNAH ARCHITECTURE WITH CONTEMPORARY SPACIAL IDEALS.

“
THE PROPOSAL FOR THE NEW MIAMI BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY, LOCATED AT THE TERMINUS OF LINCOLN ROAD, IS A RESPONSE TO THE SUCCESSFUL PUBLIC SPACE CREATED IN FRONT OF HERZOG AND DEMEURON’S 1111 PARKING. THIS WAS CREATED BY DESIGNING A PUBLIC BUILDING THAT BECAME A SOCIAL SPACE WITH THE STRUCTURAL AND SPATIAL CONCEPT OF THE MANGROVE, THE NATIVE TREE. BY LIFTING A DENSE VOLUME ABOVE THE GROUND THAT ALLOWS FOR VISUAL AND AUDITORY CONNECTIONS WITHIN, THE FIRST AND LAST LEVELS BECOME IMPORTANT AREAS THAT PERMIT FOR SOCIAL INTERACTIONS THAT PROVIDE SHELTER AND PUBLIC CONNECTIONS BUT WHILE ALSO PROVIDING SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS SUCH AS RISING SEA LEVEL AND OVER USE OF COOLING SYSTEMS BY ALLOWING AIR FLOW UNDERNEATH THE STRUCTURE. THE PERMEABILITY OF THE GROUND LEVEL ALSO ENHANCES THE IDEA PUBLIC SPACE WITH THE PROCESSION FROM EXTERIOR TO INTERIOR BLENDING THROUGH THE MAIN STAIRCASE.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUTH POINTE PARK IN REGARDS TO MIAMI BEACH CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED WHICH IS THE CHALLENGE THE SITE PRESENTS. IN ORDER TO CREATE A SCHEME THAT BLENDS SEAMLESSLY INTO THE URBAN FABRIC, THE PRIMARY VECTOR OF THE MAIN ROADS IS BROUGHT IN AND EXTENDED OUT INTO THE PIER WHICH CREATES THE DIVISION OF THE SPACES INTO A PEDESTRIAN PROMENADE AND NATURAL DUNES WITH THE TOWER FIELD CONDITION CREATING A GATE LIKE THRESHOLD THAT WELCOMES BOATERS FROM THE HARBOUR.

THE TREATMENT OF THE TOWERS REACHES TO MAINTAIN UNITY
”
THE TREATMENT OF THE TOWERS ALSO REACHES TO MAINTAIN UNITY BY BEGINNING WITH A SMALLER SCALE WITH MASSING MORE CLOSELY RELATED TO THE SURROUNDINGS AND GRADUALLY INCREASING IN SIZE AND FORM TO A MORE INDIVIDUALISTIC APPROACH WHICH ADDS A CERTAIN APPEAL AND CREATES AN ICON FOR THE CITY. TOGETHER THE PARK AND THE TOWERS WILL APPEAL TO A RANGE OF VISITORS FROM TOURISTS TO WEALTHY RESIDENTS BY CREATING A PUBLIC PEDESTRIAN SPACE AND ADDING AN ICONIC THRESHOLD FOR MIAMI BEACH.

THROUGHOUT THE MIAMI RIVER SITE WHICH IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF LUMMUS PARK, THE MAIN SOURCES OF ENERGY ARE THE RIVER, THE SUN AND WIND. BY HARNESSING THESE ELEMENTS, THE CONCEPT FOR THE PARK AND THE BUILDING IS AIMED AT USING THE POWER FROM THE RISING TIDES IS AS THE MAIN MOTOR BEHIND THE DESIGN.
“
THE FLOATING PLATFORMS THAT THE PARK IS COMPOSED OF NOT ONLY ALLOW FOR WILDLIFE IN THE RIVER TO RECLAIM THEIR HABITAT AND REHABILITATE THE WATER BUT ALSO ALLOW FOR THE USERS EXPERIENCING THE PARK TO HAVE A VARYING EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THIS IS DUE TO THE LEVELS THAT THE TIDES OFFER, WHICH IN TURN ALLOWS YOU TO VIEW THE MANGROVES (WHICH HAVE INTERESTING LAYERS) FROM DIFFERENT HEIGHTS. IT ALSO WORKS AS A SOLUTION FOR FUTURE SEA LEVEL RISE.
RAIN WATER , THE RIVER AND THE SUN ACT AS THE MAIN CATALYSTS OF THE BUILDING.
”
RAIN WATER , THE RIVER AND THE SUN ACT AS THE MAIN CATALYSTS OF THE BUILDING. IT USES THESE RESOURCES TO HELP LOWER THE HIGH TEMPERATURES THAT ARE COMMON TO THE SITE. THE BUILDING ALLOWS YOU TO NOT ONLY LEARN FROM THE DATA GATHERED BUT ALSO LEARN FROM THE PROCESS ITSELF BY ACTING LIKE A GALLERY OF SPACES. BY HARNESSING AVAILABLE ENERGY, THE BUILDING AND SITE CREATE A HARMONY WITH THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY ARE RESIDING AND IN TURN CREATE A SUSTAINABLE PROJECT.

THE MIAMI BEACH MARKET + APARTMENTS IS A PROJECT THAT REFLECTS ON THE ORIGINS OF ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTH FLORIDA AS A REFERENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE AND SOCIAL DESIGN. THE BUILDING AND PARKING LOT STRUCTURE IS COMPOSED OF A SERIES OF BLOCKS ORGANIZED AROUND A CENTRAL COURTYARD THAT ALLOWS FOR AIR FLOW WHILE CREATING A GATHERING SPACE AROUND A SERIES OF CAFES AND SHOPS ON GROUND LEVEL. ON THE UPPER FLOORS, UNITS ARE ORGANIZED TO ALLOW FOR CONSTANT VISUALS OF THE ACTIVITY BELOW AND TO MAXIMIZE SUNLIGHT WITHOUT HEAT GAIN. THE INTERSECTION OF THE BLOCKS CREATES A SERIES OF LEVELS WHICH CREATE A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE DEPENDING ON ELEVATIONS RETURNING TO THE ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION CONCEPTS SEEN IN VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE IN MIAMI BEACH WHILE INTRODUCING CONTEMPORARY SPATIAL CONCEPTS.

GENOA - THE CITY OF JANUS, PATRON GOD OF DUALITY - IS, AND HAS HISTORICALLY BEEN, A DESTINATION FOR PEOPLE SEEKING NEW OPPORTUNITIES DUE TO ITS GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION AND ITS RICH HISTORY AS A PORT CITY. GENOA – CITY OF CONTRASTS, A NEGOTIATION BETWEEN IDEAS, OLD AND NEW – EXHIBITS DISSIMILARITIES IN ITS ARCHITECTURE WITH NO CLEAR RESOLUTION BETWEEN CONFLICTING SYSTEMS OF ORDER. GENOVESE CULTURE REFLECTS THESE IDEAS THROUGH THE SEPARATION OF NEIGHBORHOODS BASED ON IMMIGRATION STATUS, RELIGION AND EVEN RACE. THE VAST VARIETY OF ISSUES PRESENTED OFFER OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE CITY’S HISTORIC CENTER MAINLY ON ONE OF THE PRIMARY ROADS: VIA SAN LORENZO. GENOA’S LONG POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS HISTORY HAS ESTABLISHED A CONCEPTION OF WHAT IT IS TO BE GENOVESE. MIRCEA ELIAD CALLS THIS PROCESS “WORLD BUILDING” IN HIS BOOK SACRED AND PROFANE. THE BELIEF THAT WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP OF PEOPLE CREATE A WORLD AROUND A CENTER POINT WHETHER IT BE RELIGIOUS, CULTURAL OR POLITICAL, EVERYTHING THAT IS UNFAMILIAR BECOMES A THREAT. THIS IS REPLICATED IN MODERN SOCIETY, EQUALLY BY THE FOREIGNERS AND LOCALS WHICH TRANSFORMS INTO FEAR OF THE “STRANGE” AND CAUSES THESE CULTURAL SEPARATIONS. THE CASA DEI PONTI PROJECT WILL BECOME THE NEW CENTER OR “WORLD” FOR GENOVA THAT PROVIDES NOT ONLY A SENSE OF SECURITY FOR BOTH SIDES BUT WILL ALSO HARMONIOUSLY BRIDGE THE LOCAL AND MIGRANT COMMUNITIES.
“
CONNECT OLD ARCHITECTURE WITH INNOVATIVE IDEAS THROUGH A SERIES OF PROGRAMS,.
”
THE CASA DEI PONTI PROJECT, WHICH IS THE LOCATED AT CHIESA DI SANTO STEFANO, WILL ALSO CONNECT OLD ARCHITECTURE WITH INNOVATIVE IDEAS THROUGH A SERIES OF PROGRAMS, SIMULTANEOUSLY CREATING AN IMPORTANT ARCHITECTURAL MOMENT IN THE CITY AND ATTEMPTING TO RESOLVE SOME OF THE MAIN CULTURAL ISSUES. THE PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS FACILITY, AN EDUCATION CENTER, AND AN EXHIBIT ROOM FOR MUSIC AND THE ARTS. IT WILL ALSO BE AIDED BY SEASONAL INSTALLATIONS THAT PROVIDE SPACES FOR FOOD, DANCE, AND OTHER CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES. BY CONSOLIDATING THE CHURCH WITHOUT DELETING THE PROCESS OF DETERIORATION AND TRANSFORMATION THAT THE BUILDING HAS ENDURED WHILE CONCURRENTLY ADDING CONTEMPORARY IDEAS OF SPACES AND CONNECTIONS, THE CONCEPTS WILL CREATE A SOCIAL DEBATE ON SCIENCE VS RELIGION, SACRED VS MUNDANE, OLD VS NEW, WHILE ALSO BRINGING ABOUT INTERESTING ARCHITECTURAL JUXTAPOSITIONS SUCH AS LIGHT VS DARK, SOLID VS VOID (PIAZZAS) AND PEDESTRIAN VS AUTOMOTIVE CITIES. IF THESE IDEAS ARE EXPLORED, THE POSSIBILITY OF THE CREATION OF A NEW GENOA - A CULTURE OF ACCEPTANCE AND TOLERANCE - ARE POSSIBLE WHILE MAINTAINING ARCHITECTURAL RESPECT FOR SUCH AN EXCITING CITY.

PROGRAM STATEMENT: GENOA, A GATEWAY INTO ITALY, HAS BECOME A PRIMARY DESTINATION FOR IMMIGRANTS ESCAPING POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION. WITH THIS MIGRATION, A SERIES OF MISCONCEPTIONS AND SEPARATIONS RELATING TO RELIGION HAVE OCCURRED WITHIN GENOA LEADING TO RESENTMENTS FROM BOTH LOCALS AND IMMIGRANTS ALIKE. TO BEGIN TO PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE, THE CASA DEI PONTI PROJECT, WILL BECOME A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN GO TO LEARN ABOUT THESE DIFFERENCES WHILE ALSO PROVIDING A PLACE OF WORSHIP FOR ALL RELIGIONS. ART AND MUSIC WILL LIKEWISE SERVE AS A SYSTEM OF EXPRESSION THROUGH THE GALLERY SPACES THAT SHOWCASE THESE JOURNEYS. MERGING THE EDUCATION, CULTURAL, AND RELIGIOUS WILL HOPEFULLY PROVIDE INSIGHT INTO WHAT A BRIDGED SOCIETY COULD BECOME.
PROJECT STRATEGY: CHIESA SANTO STEFANO, LOCATED AT THE CROSSING OF PORTA MONUMENTALE AND VIA XX SETTEMBRE, IS THE SITE FOR CASA DEI PONTI. THE BRIDGE, THE PIAZZA, AND THE ARCADES WILL BECOME THE NEW POINTS OF ACCESS TO THE PROJECT THAT WILL EXTEND NORTH TO THE SPIANATA DELL’AQUASOLA AND SOUTH TO BIBLIOTECA CENTRALE WITH A SERIES OF PEDESTRIAN AND LANDSCAPED HUBS. COMPOSED OF SEVERAL “GROUND LEVELS” THAT BECOME THRESHOLDS FOR THE ADJACENT AREAS, CASA DEI PONTI WILL BRIDGE ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL, AND INTELLECTUAL PORTIONS OF THE CITY THAT REFLECT THE PROGRAMMING OF THE PROJECT. THE SITE WILL ALSO BECOME A MEANS OF CIRCULATION FOR PEDESTRIANS AND ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE OF VIA XX SETTEMBRE.
