Florida! Splash! March 4 - 8 Florida Keys

Students will be able to come face to face with Florida’s nature by exploring her waters and surroundings. If you are looking for an adventure to expand your knowledge of the marine world this is the trip for you! Experiences will include, but are not limited: to snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, kayaking, and viewing the Everglades on an airboat ride. Florida is a perfect place to shake the winter blues and see the beauty of nature that it holds in its Keys. Students will travel throughout the Florida Keys during the course of this trip. Students participating on this trip will also travel to the Dry Tortugas for an exceptional day of learning! Note: Students must be confident swimmers to participate in this LEAP Program!

Give Kids the World

Kissimmee, FL

Give Kids the World Village is an 84-acre, nonprofit resort in Central Florida that provides week-long, cost-free vacations to children with critical illnesses and their families. The Village and its community partners provide children and their families accommodations in fullyfurnished villas, transportation, tickets to theme parks, meals, daily entertainment, and much more. Each year 27,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with a critical illness. Half of all children eligible for a wish through a partnering wish-granting organization choose to visit Central Florida and its collection of theme parks and other attractions. On this mission-based trip, you will have the opportunity to work at Give Kids the World and provide valuable needed support to make this organization run. In addition to providing great work, you will have fun visiting Disney, Gatorland, and other nearby attractions. Cost: $1,700

Lowell’s Boat School March 4 - 8

Amesbury, MA

A century ago, dories and skiffs were found everywhere along the New England Coast. Lowell’s Boat Shop, founded in 1793, is the birthplace of the American Fishing Dory. Under the guidance of Lowell’s Boat Shop boat builders, students will work together to construct a traditional 14’ Amesbury Rowing Skiff. This class will use John Gardner’s The Dory Book as a construction guide throughout the course. Students will learn how to use patterns lofted from plans and plank by eye. Additional skills covered will be building from plans, copper-riveting, caulking, spiling, beveling, lap-fitting, and other traditional skills. This will be a fastmoving, exciting course where everyone is actively involved! Students described this LEAP experience last year as interesting and fulfilling. In the evenings, students will enjoy a mix of cultural immersion and having fun as a group in this culturally rich area. Cost: $1,575

This Shebby Lee-based tour focuses on the exploration of the Silver State’s history and natural wonders. This trip includes hands-on archaeological work and unique recreational activities such as river rafting in Black Canyon, a tour of the Hoover Dam power plant, a pedal car ride on the Nevada Southern Railroad Line, and a Camel Safari and encounter in the desert.

Pine Ridge Reservation March 2 - 8 South Dakota

Volunteering with Re-Member is an emotional and life-changing event. During your visit to Pine Ridge Reservation, you will witness the extreme poverty afflicting the Lakota people of Pine Ridge; but also the resilience and strength of character that comes from their culture and traditions. The repertoire of projects created through Re-Member includes bunk beds, outhouses, trailer skirting, entry steps, wheelchair ramps and decks, and in colder months, splitting and delivering firewood. Nightly Lakota speakers and tours to historical and culturally significant sites will be an integral part of your experience.

It is said that when a person who has learned to SCUBA returns from their first open water dive, they are instantly transformed into environmentalists. The beauty and serenity of the world they have beheld, the sheer awesomeness of the silence, the weightlessness of a space in which gravity is not a factor, all contribute to this transformation. SCUBA allows man to experience the breathtaking beauty of the underworld and of its oceanographic history. Your SCUBA certification journey begins in January. Students will gain their universal referral by participating once a week in pool and classroom lectures and training through Central Mass SCUBA. On March 4, you will fly to Florida to begin your finalization of your open dive certification. Please note: you must purchase your own set of snorkel gear for January. This purchase may be made through Central Mass Scuba. You must be able to swim to participate in this program! Cost: $2,200

Space Camp March 3 - 8

Huntsville, AL

Travel to Huntsville, AL for an experience out of this world! Advanced Space Academy explores college and career preparation through an immersive experience in science, technology, engineering, and math. Trainees undergo a variety of astronaut training exercises, engineering challenges, and team building activities, all culminating in an extendedduration simulated space mission. Further experiences while at Space Camp include training on the 1/6th Gravity Chair and the Multi-Axis Trainer, designing, building, and launching a team rocket, team building on the high elements Area 51 Challenge Course, experiencing neutral buoyancy while SCUBA diving in the Underwater Astronaut Trainer, engineering challenges, and flying jet aircraft simulators.

Winter Backcountry Leadership Program

This is a tailor-made program designed for Marianapolis students with EMS. Participants will learn how to adapt basic hiking skills to the winter environment, learn appropriate emergency preparedness for cold environments, learn about appropriate clothing and equipment, how to say safe and warm during expanded four-season endeavors, while participating in team building and leadership training. Sessions within a classroom setting include survival/improvised navigation, reading topographic maps, understanding the many uses of a compass, triangulation, and magnetic declination. Note: A winter gear list of items is necessary for course participation.

Yellowstone in Winter March 4 - 8

Wyoming & Utah

America’s National Parks are simply unbelievable. During winter, Yellowstone transforms into a winter wonderland. During this winter adventure in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, lucky participants will travel by special snowcoach and an old-fashioned horsedrawn sleigh in the National Elk Refuge. Highlights include the national parks, the exceptional Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, Antelope Island State Park, and the Natural History Museum of Utah.

Yestermorrow March 3 - 8 Vermont

Head to beautiful Vermont for a week-long intensive carpentry course. Yestermorrow's Design and Build School courses are specifically designed to demystify the designing and building processes using hands-on experiential learning to teach students the art and wisdom of good design and the skill and savvy of enduring craftsmanship as a single, integrated process. At the end of your week here, you will have a basic overview of general terms, tools, and techniques used in the field of carpentry. You also will have learned how to safely use a wide range of hand and power tools while building a small structure. You will go over house framing and layout while looking at the anatomy of a structure. Whether you're planning on building your own house someday or just want to learn some basic skills, this course will help you gain confidence in the real world. The mission component of this program is that the structure you are creating will be donated at the end of the week to a local community center. Cost: $1,750

Zion to Bryce March 2 - 6 Utah

Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon have been described as two of the most spectacular places to visit by those who have been fortunate to spend time at there. This LEAP course focuses on the natural sheer beauty of both. The personal challenge component comes from the guided physical challenges that students will be participating in daily. Activities include canyoneering, hiking, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking. Participants will also be introduced to an archeological program at Zion National Park and view the Southgate Petroglyphs dating back at least one thousand years, if not older. Students will also have the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience and learn how to play the Native American Flute at the Native Flute School. They will also participate in a traditional drumming and meditation circle at the Native Flute School. Truly, this is a trip of a lifetime! Cost: $1,800

Armor Design: Deep Space + Deep Sea March 4 - 8

Surviving hostile environments is what humans do best, and there is no less hospitable environment than deep space or deep water. This course takes a look at the physical realities of these similar environs where atmosphere (or lack of), gravity, pressure, and physical and chemical hazards inform the design solution. You’ll consider material science, budget and current technology as you conceptualize and create a scale model containment suit prototype. Noteworthy designers like Ron Cobb and Syd Mead provide the inspiration for armor designs meant to protect explorers in the most extreme locations on or off this planet.

Create & Illustrate: A Children’s Novel

In this course, students explore the art and business of children’s book illustration -- including character development, establishing a setting and atmosphere, narrative illustration, and how it works with text elements. You will begin this experience with a presentation and workshop by New York Times bestselling author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author of Good Night, Monkey Boy and Baghead, as an inspirational leap into the process of your own narrative making. Writing exercises begin the process as students consider character background and motivation and craft a story that is brief but typical of the picture book form. By the end, students will have completed one cover illustration and an interior spread, with the appropriate concern for the text elements that appear on those pages. You will need to bring a sketchbook and a drawing tool with you daily! Cost: $550

Costume Design March 4 - 8

Through team building exercises, creative exploration, skills-based education and leadership from some seasoned experts, students will participate in the creation of costume elements for a local elementary school production. Students will design key elements of the production while they gain knowledge of the basic principles used in design, such as: Direction, Shape, Line, Tone, Color, Space and Texture. Students will help shape the show and be an integral part of the creative process. Set and costume design is not just a collection of images or costumes, it is the expression of mood. Design creates dramatic action, causes tension in a visual form; it is a signifier of the performance's meaning. Students who participate will be involved for the week in seminars, field trips, and studio time. Note: Although not required, it is highly suggested that participants attend the performance at the school. Transportation and tickets will be provided through weekend activities. Cost: $250


Dance the Knight Away! March 4 - 8

Dance, Dance, Dance! Whether you are as graceful as a swan gliding over a lake or have two left feet, it doesn't matter! What matters for entry and participation in this course is a desire to learn how to dance. All levels are welcome and wanted. Students will be instructed at the Fred Astaire Dance Center of Worcester and with an instructor on campus. Instruction will focus on several types of dance such as salsa, jazz, and ballroom, and also on the fundamental concepts needed to be successful in all dance: footwork, dance rhythms, and what makes a good partner. You will also get to visit a professional dance competition. Your final day will be your recital at a local nursing home. Get your groove thing on and join the fun!

Design for the Theatre March 4 - 8

“All the world’s a Stage.” True, but how do you put that world on a stage? First you have to imagine it, design it, and build it in scale model before master carpenters and builders get the opportunity to make it real. You’ll engineer from the ground up, a stage setting for a play using scale drawings and models that begin as your images and concepts but come to life in chipboard, foam board, papier mâché, and foam. This is a hands-on course that moves a “maker” from concept to architectural model in the space of three distinct but related design projects that could translate to an actual set design. You will need to bring a sketchbook to class.

Ecology 101

What do Charles Darwin, Steve Irwin, David Attenborough, and John James Audubon all have in common? Their extreme desire to learn about nature and to protect her for the ages. Whether compiling a comprehensive survey of animal and plant life on Earth, contributing to the evolution theory, or achieving worldwide fame while broadcasting wildlife documentaries, all of these naturalists believed in the beauty of nature and the miracles found within her. This program allows students to gain a better understanding of nature in Connecticut’s backyard. Held at RISD on Monday, students will visit the famed Nature Lab. There, with guidance from a RISD|CE instructor, they will sketch and be inspired. Students should bring a sketchbook and a drawing tool. At the Pomfret Audubon, students will engage in learning about our own environment. Classes and activities will focus on vernal pools and amphibians, mammal signs and tracking, ornithology and bird banding, and wildlife habitat management practices. Cost: $485

The Etiquette Academy:

Professional and Social Etiquette Here and Abroad

March 4 - 8

Professional and Social International Etiquette is designed to introduce young ladies and gentlemen to international etiquette and cultures, strengthen their social skills, perfect their communication abilities, and build the confidence and poise needed to succeed in life. The goal of this program is to empower young minds to navigate professional and social relationships with ease and teach them the skills necessary to become competent and accomplished international leaders. Held mostly on campus, students will visit the Boston Harvard Club as a final experience. Topics include: basic manners, roommate etiquette & friendships, cliques & social cues, gracious guest & hospitable host, the art of gift giving, thank you notes, fine dining, social graces for public places, business etiquette, the power of positive communication, conflict resolution, the art of conversation, job interview etiquette, professional networking, email etiquette, cell phone etiquette, social & professional dress codes, personal hygiene, and ballroom dancing. Food Blogging March 4 - 8

Calling all foodies, creative persons, and writers! Students will not only have the opportunity to get their creative juices flowing, but will also learn the practical skills needed to develop a food blog. You will learn how to: write about a food blog from Food Blogger Sarah Connell and Giselle Rivera-Flores, realize the importance of social media to grow a blog, and more. Additionally, participants will take a cupcake decorating class at The Queens Cups, explore, eat, and blog at local cafes, and even experience a field trip to Logee’s greenhouse where you can experience firsthand the plethora of natural ingredients to grow. At the end of this fun and design themed week, you will have the chance to share your own food blog based on your experiences throughout the week.

Fun with Physics

Physics is FUN! Students will begin their study area with a trip to Berkshire East to explore in person how physics work in both mountain coasters and zip lines. The remainder of this program takes place on campus in which students will be given instruction in the following focus areas: friction, kinetic force, gravitational pull, G-Force, and more. If you have ever been interested in the sciences ~ but have been a little nervous about jumping in and truly exploring them, take the opportunity! This program is hands-on learning and aimed at all who want to explore physics!

Forging

March 4 - 8

"Forged in Fire" is an original competition series hosted by weapons expert and U.S. Army and Air Force veteran Will Willis, featuring world-class bladesmiths competing to create history’s most iconic edged weapons. Students will not be ready for competition on this TV show, but you will be creating a beautifully forged knife at the end of this LEAP program that may spark an interest in becoming an expert. The Worcester Center for Crafts will provide instruction in their metals studio of knifemaking under expert bladesmith Josh Swalec. Instruction includes safety instruction, using the forge, hammers, grinding wheels, bandsaw and drill press, and all materials. Safety glasses will also be provided. Please note: Students may not, under any circumstances, collect their own products or have them on campus. All work will need to be signed for by a parent/ guardian with Mrs. Viens at the end of the program. Cost: $425

Game Design March 4 - 8

Build simple interactive games with the latest web technologies as you draw, animate, and craft interactivity by applying basic programming in JavaScript. No programming experience is necessary, though you should be computer literate, and be interested in content development using productivity tools in the Adobe Suite. The instructor introduces you to the basics of interactivity for game design using preprogrammed game modules that illustrate behaviors like mouse- and keyboard-controlled animation and boundary events. Note: You will need to bring a USB flash drive, a notebook, and curiosity for the interactive world.

Hole in the Wall: Kids for Camp

The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, provides “a different kind of healing� to seriously ill children and their families, free of charge. The Camp was founded with one simple premise in mind: that every child, no matter their illness, could experience the transformational spirit and friendships that go hand-in-hand with camp. The LEAP program is an opportunity for students to conduct a successful fundraiser, while also gaining skills like: Competence (feeling good about doing stuff), Confidence (feeling good about yourself), Connection (communicating with others), Character (respect and values), and Caring (thinking about others). A small group of students will take a tour of the Camp and then create a plan to conduct a successful fundraiser. This fundraiser is the capstone project with all profits donated to Hole in the Wall. Cost: $0

Glass Blowing Intensive March 4 - 8

Learn the fundamentals of an art form that has remained unchanged for over 2,000 years. The Worcester Center for Crafts instructor will guide you through each step of the glassblowing process, providing hands-on instruction and individual assistance. After learning the safety and studio etiquette rules, students will gain practical skills in the art of glassblowing while completing projects including paperweights, drinking glasses, bowls, and small sculptures. No experience is necessary!

Introduction to Interior Design

Designing interior spaces is a basic desire for all of us. In this course, you will take on the responsibility of reinterpreting a small cottage learning the methods of an interior design professional. You will present a design brief built around your client’s expectations that illustrates the design challenges that need to be solved. As you learn the drafting techniques that reflect the physical reality of the existing space, you will consider materials, colors, textures, fixtures, and furniture, and then put it all together in a presentation that clearly illustrates a thoughtful and improved interior space. A visit to a nearby furnishings vendor is planned as students consider budgeting and supply chain objectives that complete this introduction to interior design. Note: Students will need to bring a 1GB USB flash drive, a sketchbook, and their favorite drawing tool.

Made by Hand March 4 - 8

Made by Hand is a very special course that celebrates local artists and their creation process. Under the tutelage of exceptionally talented artists, students will learn how to create six different pieces from a natural raw form and end with something beautiful and practical in the process. Participants will be learning from some of the best of the best who create daily and make their living "by hand." The program focuses on glass bead blowing with Cynthia Saari, blacksmithing with Michael Saari, welding with Dan Durand, enameling at The Worcester Center for Crafts, weaving at Saori Studio, and pottery at Sawmill Pottery. Students will take home the pieces of art that they have created.

Marine Biology Intensive

In addition to providing hands-on learning of materials taught in class, this LEAP course is designed to continue the development of student proficiency in scientific inquiry, laboratory and field techniques, and scientific writing. This course is going to inspire you to further a dream of becoming a marine biologist! It gives a behind the scenes look at Mystic Aquarium and offers budding biologists the opportunity to truly delve (and dive) into science.

Photography March 4 - 8

How does the professional photographer inspire awe, dread, or an air of sophistication with only the human face as subject? The answers can be found in this course for photographers of all ability levels, as you gain hands-on experience with the studio lighting techniques that professional photographers use to capture the portrait image. Along with an introduction to strobe photography, you will discover how to add special effects with hot lights, diffusion, and a subtle touch of Photoshop. Props and fashion are also considered as you look for ways to capture the viewer’s attention. By the end of the course expect to have an amazing array of images and an archival print of your favorite. Note: You will need to bring a USB flash drive of 2GB or more; all other materials will be provided.

Science at Sea

Oct. 21, Oct. 28, Nov. 4, Nov. 11 & Dec. 2

Student scientists will take on the roles of oceanographers aboard the R/V Envirolab for a series of weekend trips. We’ll use trawls, plankton nets, mud grabs, and a range of professional oceanographic equipment to study the organisms that live in Long Island Sound and their physical environment. Each student will take on a mini project and the class will work together to collect data for the projects. At the end of the experience, students will have the opportunity to present their findings in a mini-symposium and will consider what our overall findings mean for health, long term change, and human impacts in Long Island Sound and the Thames River. Please note: This program takes place outside of the regular LEAP Week program in March. Students must be committed to attending the program dates in order to receive credit for completing the LEAP Program. Students who participate in Science at Sea are not expected on campus during the regularly scheduled LEAP programming of March 4 - 8. Cost: $825

Set Design March 4 - 8

Through team building exercises, creative exploration, skill-based education, and leadership from seasoned experts students will participate in the creation of set elements for a local elementary school production. Design that is properly conceived and executed, should express the core meaning of a production. These students will help shape the show and be an integral part of the creative process. Set design is not just a collection of images, it is the expression of mood. Design creates dramatic action, causes tension in a visual form; it is a signifier of the performances meaning. Students who participate will be involved for the week in seminars, a field trip, and studio time. The field trip includes workshops in the creation of a Toy Theatre and Mask Making at the renowned BIMP! Cost: $250


Silversmithing Intensive

Are you one of the lucky students who were able to head to Emily McMahon’s Silversmithing studio and thought, “That was so cool,” as you wore your newly crafted silver piece? Or did you look at your friend’s creation and think, “Wow, I’d love to do that!” Well, now you can. Emily is opening her home and studio to a few students to do a five day silversmithing intensive. Students will have the opportunity to work on a specific project of their own, designing and creating their own piece. Silversmithing techniques such as sawing, soldering, hammering, cold connections and polishing will be taught. With these skills students will be able to make pendants, bracelets, or hinged boxes.

The Art of Making Movies March 4 - 8

Moviemaking is often seen as a mysterious, smoke-and-mirrors operation, but behind the scenes is a collaborative form of communication that links art, science, and commerce. This course unravels the details of this intertwined structure, peeling back the layers of a finished product, and provides you with a deconstructed view of the moviemaking process. Such important moviemaking concepts as narrative structure, mise-en-scene, and nonlinear editing are discussed as you learn to connect vocabulary and theory with applied techniques. You’ll write a personal monologue to be performed, shot, edited, and turned into a short autobiographical movie easily distributed in a digital format. Please Note: Students will need to bring a USB flash drive of 2GB or more.

Zoology

March 4 - 8

Do you L-O-V-E animals? Are you fascinated by all that they do and the joy they bring to humans? Perhaps you are even more fascinated by the workings of zoos and the role they play in the sustainability of endangered animals? In this course, held daily at Roger Williams Park Zoo, budding zoologists will explore the importance of biodiversity, the human impacts on animal and ecosystems, how global change is affecting ecosystems, and the important roles that zoos play in protecting biodiversity. Additionally, students will have an insiders look at the veterinary hospital, the animal ambassador holding, the commissary, and an opportunity to observe an enrichment or training session!
