tudents at Marianapolis are required to earn three credits in science, each including a laboratory component. Electives are encouraged during the junior and senior years. The goal of the Science Department is to encourage curiosity, foster a sense of wonder, show the applicability of science in daily life, and provide the student with the background needed to make informed decisions in a world increasingly affected by science and technology. Equally, the goal of the department is to encourage students to think analytically about the world in which they live and be able to make informed decisions about science and technology and the impact these decisions have socially and environmentally. COURSE TITLE: FRESHMEN SCIENCE (L) GRADE LEVEL: 9 PREREQUISITES: None DURATION: Full year This course serves as an introductory science course for first year students and is a requirement for graduation. Freshman Science introduces students to the foundational skills they need to succeed in science and to become exceptional problem solvers. The focus of the course will be on experimental design, data collection and analysis, digital processing of data, and simulation of scientific phenomenon through scientific modeling. The first two trimesters will focus on Conceptual Physics and will cover the basic concepts and principles used to study objects with mass and energy with an emphasis on Newtonian Physics and motion. The third trimester will transition into an introduction to Chemistry and will focus on atomic structure and function and how they give rise. Students will be prepared to continue their focus on Chemistry with a trimester of study in their sophomore year followed by two trimesters of study in Biology
