A Message from the Alumni Office

As a proud Marian Catholic alumna, current staff member, and parent of two recent graduates, I have experienced and witnessed firsthand the positive effects of a Catholic education.

Coming from a very faith-filled family with parents who believed in Catholic education, having my children attend Catholic schools was an easy decision for me. I have carried on the traditions and values instilled in me by my parents and passed them down to my children. As a result, my children graduated from Infant Jesus of Prague School in Flossmoor and Marian Catholic. Both are currently students at the University of Dayton. Because of the stellar education they received, they left for college well prepared.

But, their education encompassed more than just academics. Both have a strong sense of community and strong moral values. Sending them to Catholic schools has given them a solid religious grounding. There is so much more to life than you can learn from books. As a result of their Catholic education, I witnessed their overall personal development, of which I am genuinely proud. They have a personal relationship with God and continue to have a strong relationship with the Church.

In addition to seeing the spiritual growth of my own children, during my 22 years at Marian Catholic, I have had the joy and privilege of witnessing the positive impact Marian’s faith-filled community has had on countless young people.

Every day, I encounter students who are benefiting from a Marian Catholic education, growing intellectually and spiritually. I have also been fortunate to meet with alumni across the country and celebrate their successes. Many have expressed that if it were not for their Marian Catholic experience and the dedication of their teachers, they would not be where they are today.

As an alumna, staff member, and parent, I have seen how a Marian Catholic education can profoundly affect an individual’s life. From 1958 when we first opened the doors, until today, our purpose remains clear, to teach Scholars with a Soul

I would love to hear how Catholic education has impacted your life. Please share your Marian Catholic story with me at cswanson@marianchs.com or 708-756-9775.

A Measure of Success

TTypically, the measure of success of a high school is based on quantifiable data such as grade point averages, standardized test scores, and graduation rates. While all of these are important assessments, they are only part of the story. To understand fully the success of a school, it is important to understand another element, the lifelong impact it has on its graduates.

As a college preparatory school, Marian Catholic is committed to helping as many students as possible continue their education at a college or university. In fact, over 95% of Marian Catholic graduates attend college with 23% attending a top 100 college or university as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. Alumni have gone on to achieve success in law, medicine, business, education, athletics, and the arts.

Each year, Marian Catholic alumni return to the school to share their experiences with current students. Repeatedly, they express that the curriculum at Marian was challenging, but that it prepared them well for college and life. They appreciate the life skills they developed at Marian including self-discipline, time management, and persistence.

In her book, “Defining Student Success: The Role of School and Culture,” Lisa Nunn references the debate over whether or not schools can make a difference in students’ academic performance, their attitudes toward education, and their future aspirations. In her studies, she found that, “While families’ attitudes toward success certainly matter in students’ lives, I find that the school environment also shapes students’ ideas about success in ways that are independent of and additional to families.” In other words, students’ views of success tend to reflect the culture of their high school.

The environment at Marian Catholic promotes more than academic excellence. It fosters expectations reflective of the school’s Dominican heritage: personal responsibility, collaboration, a personal relationship with God, respect for all of creation, and a commitment to social justice. All of these enable Marian Catholic graduates to assume roles as responsible leaders and strong citizens, the true measure of success.

In each issue of Marian Matters, we celebrate the personal and professional moments of achievement of our alumni. This issue is no exception. In addition to the usual Alumni Notes, we’ve included highlights of this year’s Hall of Fame inductees who were recognized at the 2023 Veritas Gala and Auction for their consistent support of the school and its mission. We hope you enjoy all of the stories.

JOCELYN DELK ADAMS ’99

Jocelyn Delk Adams '99 is the founder, author, national television personality, and brand ambassador behind the award winning cookbook “Grandbaby Cakes” and the food website Grandbaby-Cakes.com, in which she gives her family’s cherished generational recipes a modern spin while preserving the most important ingredient – tradition.

With the release of her second cookbook, “Everyday Grand: Soulful Recipes Celebrating Life’s Big and Small Moments,” a book tour, and a recent appearance on “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” Jocelyn is continuing to take the culinary world by storm!

Over the years, Adams has built a legacy that still feels like a dream come true. “The inspiration behind the brand is my late grandmother, “Big Mama.”

I spent a lot of time with her in the kitchen as a child and didn’t discover my very own ‘baking gene’ until I was well into adulthood. The blog led to a cookbook, and since then I’ve worked with an army of incredible culinary brands, stars, companies, media outlets, and influencers.”

Adams’ first television food demonstration segment was on “Fox News Chicago.” After more than 20 segments on various Chicago news networks, she landed her first national television segment on “The Rachael Ray Show” promoting her first cookbook. Since then, she has worked with top networks including The Cooking Channel and Food Network, where she co-hosts “Stab That Cake.” Additionally, she’s had multiple appearances on “TODAY” and “Good Morning America,” as well as judging shows on The Disney Channel and Disney +. She also launched a series of signature cakes with one of the country’s leading culinary retailers – WilliamsSonoma. “Each opportunity prepared me for the next one,” said Adams.”

The idea for her new cookbook, “Everyday Grand,” was conceived during COVID-19. “We were spending so much time indoors. Unfortunately for some individuals, the pandemic caused the loss of life, jobs, homes, and more. I had to work extremely hard at practicing thankfulness and finding slivers of hope, even during a moment where gratitude felt like a foreign emotion. When I started to think about the book, I wanted to restore the feeling of joy, because at that time, it felt so distant. There was so much despair with the pandemic and social justice revolution. I remembered that joy is created within us, and I wanted my readers to celebrate life as it is – big and small moments. The book was developed to feed our souls, as each recipe is from the soul of my family and each mindfulness practice is from my heart.“

Marian was a special place for Adams where she found a lot of joy in the disciplined yet immersive environment. Teachers pushed her beyond her limits, and for that, she is grateful. “It was at Marian where I developed my self-esteem the most in my life journey. Mr. Martin, my advanced English teacher, pushed me more than anyone else. At the time, I wasn’t excited about it, but now, as the author of two books, I realize that he was preparing me for life dreams that hadn’t surfaced yet.”

Her words of wisdom for current students? “First, present your absolute authentic self. Being true to yourself leads to building a community, and trust me, authenticity is key! You can never run out of ‘steam’ when you focus on showcasing who you are – your interests, your ideas, your moments in life.

“Secondly, believe in yourself! Believe you belong even if the industry seems too full to host more culinary personalities. Plant your roots and watch them grow.

“Thirdly, do as much as you can to build a network of associates and friends. These relationships can become your family. The community is very welcoming! Find ways to work with established and emerging talent: ask to help on a photoshoot, participate in grocery shopping and prep, lend your ideas for written opportunities from Instagram captions to newsletters or blogs. You’ll also nurture your strengths during this process. Maybe you wanted to start as an ice cream blogger, but discovered you prefer food styling and prep over recipe writing and development. Behind-the-scenes career opportunities are just as fulfilling and robust as on-camera opportunities.”

“Finally, do not fall into comparison traps, as they may influence you to become discouraged by another person’s accomplishments. Find gratitude in the quiet moments and know that your time to shine will present itself if you stay consistent and committed!”

NATE JACKSON ’12

In December 2022, a Marian Catholic graduate reached the highest pinnacle among his peers worldwide. Nate Jackson, of the Class of 2012, won the United World Championship Cup at 92 kg at the World Championship Wrestling meet in Qatar, defeating his opponent from Iran. Jackson’s win helped propel Team USA to a Team World Championship as well.

In case you didn’t notice, this was the World Championship. Yes, that’s right, World Championship. And if you’re wondering what it takes to become a world class athlete, Nate will tell you it takes enormous talent and hard work as might be expected. But Nate has something else that sets him apart. He says, “I am the best in the world because I have the best support system in the world. It starts with my family. I am blessed to be in a house full of love and support. Win or lose, we celebrate our individual journeys to the fullest. This relieves me of the stress and anxiety associated with chasing down lofty goals. I live my life with no pressure, so each victory is icing on the cake.”

In addition to the support from his family, Nate has amassed an impressive list of milestones on his way to the World Championship. During his college career at Indiana University, he was a three time NCAA Qualifier in 2015, 2016, and 2017, earning All American honors in 2016 and 2017. For the past five years, Nate has been an assistant wrestling coach at Princeton University. And then, came the World Championship in Qatar.

According to USA Wrestling website writer Gary Abbott, “A huge win for the USA came at 92 kg as National Team member Nate Jackson wrestled with skill and passion in an 8-4 win over [his Iranian opponent]. Jackson scored on an early 4 pt. takedown to set the tone for the bout. When [Jackson’s opponent] tried a late comeback Jackson closed it out with a clutch takedown.”

Nate’s journey to his 2022 Championship had its challenging moments. Moments that Nate looks back on as opportunities for growth. “As a senior in high school, my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I became pregnant and eventually welcomed our son...in the summer after graduation. 2013 was a big year for our young family. We got married, left our roots in the South Suburbs of Chicago to raise our son as [we were] full time students at Indiana University and committed to finding success in spite of the narrative that surrounds teenage pregnancy and parenting. We went on to raise three children [while] in college. In 2017, following my college career where I was a two-time All-American athlete on the wrestling team, I secured a college coaching job at Princeton University. Today I am on the US National Team and still coach at Princeton. My wife is a New York fashion model and Mrs. Rhode Island, all while she helps me raise our four kids (Nathan 10, Carter-Ray 8, Zoe-Ray 6, and Kynlee-Reigh 5) and crushes real estate.”

As for his future...Nate is determined to connect with his roots in Africa with his family. “I will kick-start our continental visit February 26, as I journey to Egypt on my first trip ever to Africa. We plan on visiting Nigeria as a family this year after our DNA test revealed that we share the majority of our family lineage from that country.”

Among his favorite memories of Marian Catholic, Nate remembers the people. He says, “Definitely the people. The memories I have with my big sister and my friend Vernon are everything! Dan Jordan was my wrestling coach. He was the first coach I had outside

my father that did the work to hold me accountable in my training and my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance.”

In spite of all the success and accolades he has accumulated, Nate sees himself as rather uncomplicated. “I am a family man. That’s it! The rest is just icing on the cake. I hope to make the people in my household feel whole, so that when they leave and experience their walks with other people they can be beacons of light.”

JAMES THOMPSON ’78 & TODD BRUNI ’78

How far would you travel to visit a classmate 35 years after graduation? Across town? To another state? To the East or West Coast? “Sure,” you’d say. And many Marian Catholic graduates have done just that, maintaining friendships forged years ago in the halls of Marian Catholic.

But what about more than 7,000 miles, not only on a different continent, but a different hemisphere? Well, one Marian Catholic graduate does just that. Meet Jim Johnson '78 and his teammate and fellow alumnus Dr. Todd Bruni '78 who lives and practices dentistry in Qatar.

After keeping in touch through college, Dr. Bruni moved to and established a practice in Qatar, more than 7,000 miles from Chicago Heights. Determined not to let their friendship die, Thompson and Bruni remained committed to preserving their long term relationship. Jim said, “We kept in touch all through college days, Todd at Notre Dame and myself a Western Illinois graduate, which led me to my initial career as a Deputy Sheriff for Los Angeles County. And then I started visiting Todd for the past 20 years and attending the World Cup of Thoroughbred Horse Racing in nearby Dubai.”

While visiting with Todd and his family this past December, Jim and Todd attended several matches in the World Cup Soccer Championships being held in Qatar.

Jim also keeps in touch with several classmates who are much closer than Qatar. The group occasionally gets together and shares memories of their years at Marian Catholic. “Todd and I used to raise the American flag every morning during our senior year. The Saturday daytime football games at Sarff Field, and the Foghat concert in the gym highlight just a few of my memories along with receiving a detention [for a dress code hair violation] from Dean Goldrick who I later had a beer with during a Blackhawks game and reminisced with him. He played his role as Dean professionally and admirably.”

Jim recalls other faculty who were important to him during his time at Marian Catholic. “Coach [Dave] Mattio and Coach [Bob] Bergstrom had a big impact on my attending Marian in the first place, but the newspaper mentor [Sister Mary Annette] whose name I no longer remember and in fact all the Dominican Sisters (Sister Margaret Ann among others) left a lasting impression on me to exceed expectations and to go above and beyond in everything I do.”

Jim explains his devotion to his friends and Marian Catholic this way. He says, “Dr. Bruni is a great friend and someone I value very much in my life and someone who has been very good to Marian Catholic; and his family (brother Marc) has sent several sons and a daughter to Marian Catholic through the years.” Jim, himself, has returned to Marian numerous times to participate in Career Day, a rewarding journey close to home.

“TODD AND I USED TO RAISE THE AMERICAN FLAG EVERY MORNING DURING OUR SENIOR YEAR.”

I thought – what just happened out there!?” Mr. Bimm always instilled in band members that hard work and persistence pays off. Mary realizes now how focused and invested he was in his students’ growth, and how lucky Marian Catholic has been to have him.

you read a specific author and can tell it’s their work. It can take a little while to discover it, but you just have to keep writing until you recognize it on the page.”

MARY BAADER KALEY ’87

Fast forwarding to the present, Mary comes from a corporate career background. She took some years off to care for her special needs child, but has since rejoined the corporate world as well as beginning a real estate career. She is no stranger to hard work. Balancing her career, her special needs son, and her book, reminded her a lot of the rigorous high school curriculum at Marian Catholic, where students often need to balance school, extracurricular activities, and oftentimes work. Marian Catholic aims everyday to prepare students for the pace of college life and beyond, something that Mary encountered head on.

Mary Baader Kaley '87 comes from a family of writers and remembers watching her mother working on articles for the local newspaper. She attributes growing up in that environment to her dreams of writing her own novel. Her recently published work of fiction, “Burrowed,” is proof dreams do come true.

During her time at Marian Catholic, Mary was a member of the band. She admits she was not the best clarinet player, going as far to say that she wanted to quit right from the start. But, the upperclassmen in the band really mentored her and helped her to find her footing. She ended up staying in the band for all four years and was glad she did because “it only got better from there.” As any member of the band will tell you, having Mr. Bimm as a band director will definitely have a lifelong impact. Mary recounted that “Beyond teaching us the mechanics and beauty that lives in music, he taught us about dedicating ourselves to a larger work.” A lesson that she has carried with her into her adult life. Reminiscing on her marching days brought back memories of how emotional being in the band can be. “I remember days when we played something during a marching band show/competition better than we ever did in practice, and fighting the urge to cry until we were walking off the field. And at that point, I recall being surprised seeing that I wasn’t the only one caught up in tears.

Establishing herself as an author was not as straightforward as one may think. After taking time off to care for her differentlyabled son, Mary was determined to find a creative outlet. She joined online writing groups and began writing short stories and flashing fiction, eventually working on a children’s book. Mary found a group of writer friends that helped her hone her craft and build her writing style, along with her sister who was an English major in college. She jokes that her sister is the one who should be the writer because of how talented she is. Writing runs in the family! Even though Mary could not go back and get a creative writing degree, she was able to read trade books and anything else that might help her develop her skills to be the best writer she could be.

Mary’s advice to anyone who is passionate about writing is “to find your own voice; don’t try to mimic some currently trending writer. Your voice encapsulates what you feel and think, your values, and how you put ideas together to make sense of the world. It’s a quiet personality that comes out no matter what character you’re writing about; it’s the thing that you notice when

“Burrowed” is heavily based on Mary’s own life experiences. Both of her parents were high school teachers, and in the book the main character is obsessed with becoming a teacher. “Burrowed” explores how differently-abled people are treated based on their disability. Mary’s son was born with a brain malformation in 2007, and didn’t speak until he was four. He has been diagnosed with autism and has trouble communicating back-and-forth in any type of conversation. But, if you know him well enough, he gets his point across to anyone listening closely. He makes Mary laugh every day, so to give characters with disabilities a voice means a lot to her and her family. She always wondered what would happen in a world where everyone was disabled, so she created one. For example, would someone be seen first for their disability, or primarily for their strengths? Her son is an amazing individual who is much more than his disability.

Mary’s book is powerful and will hopefully start an open conversation about disability among readers. The Marian Catholic community is lucky to have alumni who are out in the world having these conversations and changing worldviews for the better. “Burrowed” is available for purchase on Amazon.

Women’s Basketball Reunion a Slam Dunk!

Members of the 2001-2002 Women’s Basketball Team returned to Marian Catholic for a 21st Anniversary Reunion to commemorate their regional and sectional titles. Many of the former players brought their families with them to see the current varsity team beat Andrean in a stunning 39-35 win!

After the game, players and their families attended a reception in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, OP Leadership Center catered by Twisted Q BBQ. Players walked through the halls with their children to show them the pictures, trophies, and MVP awards from their memorable season. It was wonderful to have the team back in the building, reconnecting, and supporting the varsity girls.

Coach Dan Murray especially appreciated having the team cheer on the new generation of players. And the former players loved getting to catch up with Coach Murray, Coach Kevin Kelly '80, and Assistant Coach Neil Harrington. Coach Shannon Reidy '90 was able to call in from Boston and talk to the team as well!

VERITAS VII HALL OF FAME RECIPIENTS

DOMINICAN SISTERS OF SPRINGFIELD

150TH ANNIVERSARY

One hundred fifty years ago, in 1873, six Dominican Sisters left their home in St. Catherine, Kentucky, in response to an urgent request from the Diocese of Springfield. Their destination was Jacksonville, Illinois, an Irish settlement of immigrants, miners, and day laborers in desperate need of educators. Little did these Sisters know they would be founding a whole new congregation.

Over time, more Dominican Sisters would join them, necessitating a relocation to Springfield and the construction of the Sacred Heart Convent. A steady stream of women joined the ranks of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield striving to be vibrant preachers of the Word.

The Dominican Sisters of Springfield have operated hospitals, ministered within the prison system, worked with immigrants and Native Americans, and cared for the elderly and dependent children. They have served as canon lawyers, educators, healthcare professionals, social workers, campus ministers, and program directors. In their search for justice and peace, they have embraced insertion, collaboration, and social responsibility. They established a mission in Peru, from which Peruvian members of the congregation continue to minister, and Jubilee Farm in Springfield, which has flourished as a center for ecology and spirituality.

The assignment of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield has always been based on needs of the time. In 1955, in response to a call from Cardinal Stritch of Chicago and with the support of Monsignor Walter Croarkin of St. Agnes Church, the Sisters accepted the staffing and financial responsibility for a new high school in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Once again, they were called to educate a community of Catholics in need; and they followed the Spirit willingly.

Marian Catholic opened in September 1958. Although originally intended to be an all-girls school, Marian Catholic became the first coeducational high school in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Rooted

in the Dominican Pillars of prayer, study, community, and preaching, the school has always sought to educate students who strive for excellence but also understand the importance of Christian service.

Throughout the Marian Catholic’s 64 year history, hundreds of Dominican Sisters have served as teachers and administrators. Past principals and presidents include: Sister Mary Mannes Kern OP; Sister Mary Antonette Feldhake OP; Sister Mary Alberta Lawless OP; Sister Judith Anne Haase OP; Sister Mary Paul McCaughey OP '67; Sister Mary Joan Sorge OP; Sister Kathleen Anne Tait OP; and Sister Judine Hilbing OP '67.

The school owes a debt of gratitude to these individuals and all the Dominican Sisters who worked or volunteered at Marian Catholic. For that reason, the school would like to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield and thank them for making Marian Catholic part of their legacy.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

JOHN BENISH, JR. ’84

John Benish, Jr. was the third of five Benish children to graduate from Marian Catholic; and he credits his parents, Ellen and John Sr., with his desire to give back, his appreciation for Catholic education, and his ultimate success.

John admits that Marian Catholic was not his first choice, but he quickly learned that the Sisters were not as scary as he first feared and that the academics, though challenging, gave him and his classmates a sense of pride. He valued the Chicago Heights toughness of the school and the dedication of its teachers and staff, especially Sister John Joseph OP who kept him from flunking out, as well as Sister Mary Paul McCaughey OP '67, Dave Mattio '66, and Bob Bergstrom. John played football all four years, and Coaches Mattio and Bergstrom were a major influence on his development as a young man.

John graduated from Marian Catholic in 1984 and has remained lifelong friends with many of his classmates and teammates. John says his friends, including fellow honoree Tim Fallon '84, are amazing examples of what a strong Catholic education can produce and he could not ask for a better group of individuals. John also thanks Carol Burke Swanson '81 and Mike Bruni '86 for keeping him engaged with the school.

Following Marian Catholic, John went on to earn degrees from Purdue University and St. Xavier University in advertising and management, respectively. He worked his way up the ladder at his family’s business, Cook-Illinois Corporation, where he currently serves as President and Chief Operating Officer. Cook-Illinois Corporation is the largest family owned and operated school bus contractor in the U.S. and the sixth largest school bus contractor in the U.S. overall. They operate over 2,300 school buses daily and are a leader in alternative fuels.

An astute business professional and advocate for safety, John has held several industry roles, including serving as President of the National School Transportation Association from 2020 to 2021. John has testified before Congress; and – fun fact –he was a motorcade driver for President Ronald Reagan. Marian Catholic isn’t the only school to benefit from John’s expertise and generosity. He also serves on the Purdue University President’s Council and the St. Xavier University Board of Trustees.

John thanks his wife Christie for her tireless support and for giving him the greatest gift, their four beautiful children: McKenzie, Georgia, Jack, and Lucy Bleu. Continuing the Benish family’s legacy of philanthropy, John and Christie have demonstrated their commitment to the Catholic faith, to Catholic education, and to Marian Catholic time and time again. Anything the school needs, personally or professionally, John and Christie are there; and we cannot thank them enough.

For the example he has provided as a professional, community member, father, and son, Marian Catholic is proud to recognize John Benish, Jr. '84 as a 2023 Alumnus of the Year.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

TIM FALLON ’84

As one of four boys, Tim Fallon '84 acknowledges the sacrifices his parents, Raymond and Virginia, made in order to send him and his brothers to Catholic school. They understood the importance of education, which they passed on to Tim and the rest of the family.

While at Marian Catholic, Tim played football with fellow honoree John Benish '84. Like John, he credits coaches, like Dave Mattio '66, Bob Bergstrom, and Ron Guagenti, for teaching him teamwork and persistence. He also credits the Marian Catholic Sisters and his teachers for putting up with him and teaching him the importance of community, faith, and the power of knowledge. A member of the 1984 Turnabout Court, Tim was active on campus. He even once rode a donkey while playing basketball during a school assembly. Through it all, Tim built a lifelong community of fellow Spartans, remaining friends with many of his classmates to this day.

After graduating from Marian Catholic in 1984, Tim went on to Marquette University, where he earned a degree in business administration. He started his career at SEI Capital Resources before joining the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits of the United Methodist Church. Tim oversaw much of the Church’s multi-billion dollar, socially-conscious investment program. In 1996, Tim joined Marquette Associates, where he is now a partner and owner.

Marquette Associates is the 19th largest investment consulting firm in the U.S. Tim acted as the firm’s director of client relations and managed several practice areas, including corporate, healthcare, religious, and endowments, foundations, and nonprofits, before stepping back from day-to-day operations in 2022. Tim worked closely with organizations serving society, including the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, to ensure their financial goals were met and they could expand their good works. Tim is a member of the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA) and obtained the title of Certified

Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) from IMCA’s program at the Wharton School of Business.

Tim owes much of his success to his wife Trish, who has been his constant support and with whom he shares four wonderful children: Kalie, Molly, Drew, and Ellie. Together, Tim and Trish are involved parents and community members. Tim serves as a board member to the Illinois Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Easter Seals of Metropolitan Chicago. The latter is the nation’s largest healthcare nonprofit organization, providing education, services, and advocacy for over 1.5 million individuals with disabilities.

We at Marian Catholic have been blessed by Tim and Trish’s involvement and generosity. They demonstrate the meaning of “pay it forward,” and Tim has shared that he sees Marian Catholic as a continued beacon of hope for young people in the South Suburbs.

For what he has been able to achieve not only professionally but also personally, Marian Catholic is excited to recognize Tim Fallon '84 as a 2023 Alumnus of the Year.

FINE ARTS ACHIEVEMENT RAY CORTOPASSI ’85

Ray Cortopassi is truly “Chicago’s Very Own.” Ray grew up in Dolton and attended St. Jude the Apostle in South Holland. His parents, Ted and Marlene, taught him the meaning of faith, family, sacrifice, and hard work. Ted was a foreman at U.S. Steel’s “South Works” plant, and Marlene was a piano teacher. Ray fondly remembers watching Ray Rayner and Bozo’s Circus with his brothers Michael and Scott growing up.

Ray’s parents were determined to give him a Catholic education, and he decided to attend Marian Catholic because his Aunt Ginny was an alumna. It meant rising before the sun and long bus ride, but Ray’s teachers, coaches, and classmates made everything worth it. At Marian Catholic, Ray learned hard work and perseverance. He also found a sense of belonging and identity. Ray was a member

of the Spartan tennis team with Coach Perkovich. He credits Marian’s strong emphasis on writing, as well as teachers like Mrs. Gusick, Mr. Wooddell, and Mr. Crean, for igniting his creativity and setting him on a path to future success.

After graduating from Marian Catholic in 1985, Ray attended Thornton Community College, where he developed an interest in broadcast. He then went on to Columbia College Chicago to earn a degree in journalism. Ray worked for what is now the Daily Southtown while in college and started his career as a reporter for the City News Bureau in Chicago.

Ray made it on air when he joined a television station in Traverse City, Michigan. He then moved to Las Vegas, followed by Indianapolis. In 2009, Ray joined the FOX59 news team in Indianapolis where he anchored the #1 rated morning newscast and 4 p.m. news. In September 2020, Ray came home to Chicago. He is currently the co-anchor of the WGN Evening News, WGN News at Nine, and WGN News at Ten. For Ray, it’s the culmination of a lifelong ambition to anchor the news in his hometown.

Over his career, Ray has received numerous recognitions, including multiple Emmy and Associated Press awards. However, his greatest accomplishment is his family. Ray and his wife Leslie have been married for 29 years. Her support has carried him from city to city and job to job. Together they are the parents of four amazing children: Ryan, Andrew, Tess, and Christopher.

When Ray is not working, he is usually bouncing between his kids’ activities. He also has done great work in the community, most notably with the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Little Sisters of the Poor. He even co-founded and directed a community theatre while in Indianapolis. Ray enjoys acting, music, and getting in a tennis game whenever he can.

Marian Catholic has been blessed to have Ray be part of our Veritas celebration the past two years, first by video and then in-person as last year’s emcee. We are now honored to recognize him with the 2023 Fine Arts Achievement Award for both his career in the arts and the example he has set for our students.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR CASEY TAYLOR BUFFORD ’05

Casey Taylor Bufford '05 is Marian Catholic’s only three-time state champion, taking home the IHSA state championship in the triple jump in 2003, 2004, and 2005. She was also a three-time IHSA state qualifier in the long jump and relay. However, track and field was not her only sport. Casey played volleyball her freshman and sophomore year before becoming a star member of the women’s basketball team. Casey was a starter in 2004 when they earned fourth in the IHSA Class AA Women’s Basketball state semifinals and was the leading scorer and rebounder on the 2005 team. She was The Times Illinois Female Athlete of the Year in both 2004 and 2005 and Chicago Sun-Times Female Athlete of the Year Runner-Up in 2005.

After graduating from Marian Catholic in 2005, Casey earned a track and field scholarship to the University of Michigan. As a Wolverine, Casey was team captain and a Big 10 champ, winning Big Ten team times in 2006 and 2007, and individual titles in the outdoor triple jump in 2008 and the indoor triple jump in 2009. To this day, she still holds the outdoor record at Michigan. Casey also ran on the 400-meter relay team and long jumped and placed in the Big Ten Champion Meet in the long jump, 400-meter relay, 100-meter, and 200-meter sprints. She was a NCAA Nationals qualifier several times and, in 2009, received All-American honors in the triple jump.

In January 2016, Casey was inducted into the University of Michigan’s Track and Field Hall of Fame. In recognition of her skills and attitude both on and off the field, the University established the Casey Taylor Leadership Award. Casey graduated from Michigan with a degree in sports management and has since earned advanced degrees in sports leadership from Northeastern University and a master of business administration from Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business.

Casey held several roles in college athletics at Harvard University and the University of Michigan. Casey also taught

sports management courses at George Mason University. She then pivoted to marketing and strategy roles at Procter & Gamble, followed by Discover. She recently joined a sports technology company, StatusPRO, where she leads marketing for the first ever NFL-licensed virtual reality game, NFL PRO ERA. Casey and her husband Branden have two beautiful children: her daughter Taylor and her son Jabari.

Casey contributes her success to her #1 fan, her mother Dr. Andrea Evans, who set a strong example as a working mother earning her own Ph.D. She never missed an event and was at Casey’s side throughout high school, college, and beyond. Casey also thanks her stepfather Dr. Dwayne Evans, Sr., her siblings, Jasmine, Janice, Lee, and Dwayne Jr., her extended family, and her high school teammates and coaches.

Casey’s coaches and teammates made her high school experience memorable. Her varsity coaches, including Don McKillip and LaVon Burkes (track) and Shannon Reidy and Kevin Kelly (basketball) were committed to her improvement and taught her how to lead a team. Casey learned discipline, sacrifice, and dedication while at Marian Catholic – traits which she carries with her to this day.

Casey Taylor Bufford '05 is most certainly a model student-athlete for the young men and women of Marian Catholic, and the school is proud to recognize her as the 2023 Athlete of the Year.

SPIRIT OF MARIAN

ANN WALLER, POSTHUMOUSLY

Anastasia “Ann” Waller was born in 1937 to Dr. John and Anastasia Lohmann. She grew up in Pipestone, Minnesota, the oldest of nine children. Ann attended the College of St. Catherine and graduated with a degree in education. In 1961, while attending a friend’s wedding in Dixon, Illinois, Ann met her future husband Lyndon “Stretch” Waller. They were married for 44 years before his passing in 2006.

When Ann joined Marian Catholic in 1970, she was only supposed to fill in

for three weeks. She ended up staying for over 40 years! She taught home economics and later assumed the role of dean. As the Dean of Women, Ann helped decades of students navigate the challenges of young adulthood. Her mission was to teach young women life skills and to coach parents through the teenage years; and she did just that, with gentle wisdom and a little spunk. Deans rarely engender positive feelings amongst students, but Ann did and still does. Many alumni credit her with turning their lives around. As one student stated, “I can never really repay what [Mrs. Waller] did for me. She taught me what Marian is all about.”

In addition to the students, Ann was well-respected by her fellow educators at Marian Catholic. She was always willing to go the extra mile and set an example for other staff. Her kindness and her energy were contagious.

Marian Catholic was more than a workplace for Ann. It was her home. Living only a couple blocks away, Ann and Stretch were a staple at practices, athletic competitions, and fine arts performances. Their children even bought them a golf cart, nicknamed the Stretchmobile, to get around campus. Ann and Stretch were pillars in the school community. In 2004, Stretch was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. All four of their children graduated from Marian Catholic. Martha (Bowen) '81 was in the band, and Sarah (Traxler) '82 was involved in student council and National Honor Society. John '85 and Jim '87 played football and basketball.

In retirement, Ann returned to Minnesota. She enjoyed being a grandmother and great grandmother. Ann’s friends, family, and students knew her by a variety of names –Anastasia, Stash, Mrs. Waller, Mom, Grandma Stash, and GG – but all knew her for her loving spirit. She was an excellent cook, famous for her caramel rolls and sour cream cookies, but more importantly she was a caring teacher, wife, and mother who was always willing to offer sound advice or make you smile.

Ann passed away in May 2022 at the age of 85. She blazed a trail that will be difficult to follow. Marian Catholic is privileged to be able to recognize Ann Waller, posthumously, with the 2023 Spirit of Marian Award.

EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY

Generation Green has worked on several larger projects this year, including propagating clippings from the Living Wall in Main Hall. As the clippings grow, members replant them and ensure they have adequate light and water. Students and staff are then able to purchase the plants to help make Marian Catholic an even greener space. Care sheets, created by Generation Green members, help the new owners nurture their plants. Proceeds are used to replace open spaces on the wall, which continues to thrive. Generation Green is also focused on revitalizing the courtyard between Second and Fourth Halls. A large improvement the students have been working on is removing invasive weeds and caring for a new sugar maple tree. The group also visited Sand Ridge Nature Center to learn about the local environment and spend time in nature.

Marian Catholic students and staff celebrated Respect Life Month with a recorded prayer service from the Diocese of Gary sponsored by Franciscan Health. The theme was “Called to Serve Moms in Need.” Bishop McClory urged participants to love both moms and their children through acts of love.

Students attending Men’s Kairos 213 and Women’s Kairos 214 experienced an encounter filled with prayer, love, and a chance to get closer to God.

All Saints’ Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to remembering all those who have attained heaven – the saints of the Church – in a special way. This year, Marian Catholic was blessed to share the school’s All Saints Mass with a number of Dominican Sisters from Springfield.

Day of the Dead

(Dia De Los Muertos), celebrated November 1-2, reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor family members who have passed. Marian Catholic’s LatinX Student Coalition created a beautiful ofrenda near the main office and invited students and staff to bring a photo or prayer card of departed loved ones to place on the ofrenda to be remembered in prayer.

The Legacy of a Helping Hand

Lauren Richardson '24 has “always been about community.” Her commitment to help those less fortunate began in fourth grade after a visit to downtown Chicago at Christmas where she and a friend couldn’t help but feel compassion for the homeless they noticed on the streets. As Lauren explains it, she and her friend saw the individuals they met as more than just being homeless. They recognized each of them had a story and that the people they met weren’t necessarily homeless by choice. They knew many of them had no choice. Together, Lauren and her friend launched an idea to one day open a homeless shelter funded with the proceeds of a lemonade stand. Each of the rooms in the shelter would feature a different theme, chosen by its resident who would be supported in a loving environment. Ultimately, Lauren and her friend realized it would take much more than a lemonade stand to fund their dream.

Inspired by Lauren’s earliest experiences, the group was initially focused on homelessness. But Lauren wanted to make sure Helping Hands was an interactive club so she asked members what activities they wanted to be involved in. The ideas for community outreach were endless including nursing homes, churches, and animal shelters. During the first semester, members of Helping Hands conducted a coat drive in conjunction with Aspen Dental, visited Lawrence Manor Nursing Home (Matteson), and helped pack boxes at Emmaus Community (Olympia Fields) for families in need at Christmas. Future missions include serving at Restoration Ministries’ food pantry as well as tutoring in their after-school program and taking part in Marian Catholic’s Day of Service during 4Marian.

For Lauren, Helping Hands is much more than a club. “It’s fun. We’re a team,” she says. “Once a platform was established, so many amazing people came forward who share the same passion for service.” As of now, Lauren plans to attend Spelman College to study Psychology and eventually work in mental health. She still dreams of starting her own not-for-profit someday. Asked about the future of Helping Hands once she graduates, Lauren stated, “I have faith in them. I have faith in the club.”

In October, the Sophomore Retreat enabled students to get to know their classmates better and learn about the gifts God has given all of us. A special guest speaker, Elesha West '12, talked with the students about the gifts that she was blessed with, as well as her time as a student at Marian Catholic and how it prepared her for her life today.

Now a junior at Marian Catholic, Lauren is as passionate about helping others as she was when she was nine. “I don’t like to see someone struggling for basic necessities.” Wanting to share that passion with the Marian Catholic Community, she approached Mrs. Linda Hansen, Vice President for Ministry and Mission about forming a service oriented student group. “I didn’t want it to be just another club at school,” said Lauren. “I wanted a long-term, on-going club to help people. I wanted Marian Catholic to be trademarked as a school that helps people.” The concept was well received by administration, faculty, and students. Ultimately, Lauren’s goal became reality with the founding of Helping Hands

15 MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Marian Catholic welcomed several Dominican Sisters from Springfield to campus for Sisters Day on November 3 and again on January 30. The Sisters visited all Theology classes where they talked about their lives and held Q&As with students. Sisters Day was started after last year’s Dominican Preachers sat in on a listening session with the Pope and decided they wanted to experience the Sisters’ presence more in the building. Thank you to all who participated and a special thank you to Sister Jean Patrice for coordinating both days!

December’s Spirit Night participants enjoyed making gingerbread houses before a spaghetti and meatball dinner with a side of syrup inspired by the movie, Elf! After dinner, it was off to the Drury Lane Theater in Oak Brook, IL, where they took in Elf, The Musical.

Marian Catholic students participated in Neuqua Valley High School’s Science Olympiad 2023 Regional Invitational Winners included: 2nd place to Allison Melvin '23 and Paul Arquilla '23 for “It’s About Time; 3rd place to Trinity Cowles '25 and Josh Mogbo '23 for “Dynamic Planet;” 3rd place to Aiden Vazquez '26 and Jeirmyl Liddell '25 in Detector Building; 4th place to Vazquez, Mogbo and Francesca Bernarte '24 in Codebusters; and 4th place to Bernarte in the Scrambler Build.

In December, the entire student body came together for Marian Catholic’s 64th Annual Christmas Drive to bring Christmas to 32 adopted families of Respond Now! The Annual Christmas Drive provides each family with more than 100 food, toiletry, household items, and gifts for their children. A special thank you to Fox 32 Chicago and the Archdiocese of Chicago for coming out to cover the amazing event. Scan the QR code above to check out the Fox News story!

Several students from the Marian Catholic News team went to the Chicago Boat Show, where they were able to film and interview attendees.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit, students participated in fun activities including learning how to make dumplings, eating Chinese food, and hearing about traditions of Chinese culture from Ren Li, President of Cornerstone Education.

Junior Justyn Hart spent a weekend in Arizona for a baseball invite through Major League Baseball for future prospects. “The opportunity to be a part of the Dream Series selection is humbling, and I am extremely thankful! It allowed me the platform to display my talents and hard work while also highlighting top players from all over the country,” said Justyn.

Several Spartans, along with students from Infant Jesus of Prague School in Flossmoor, Ill., took a combined field trip to Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago on February 24 for the 45th annual African American Heritage Prayer Service with Bishop Joseph Perry of Vicariate VI presiding.

Love was in the air on Valentine’s Day at Marian Catholic! The Student Council held a flower gram sale where students could purchase flowers to be delivered to those they love and care about.

Marian Catholic’s Black Student Union, Latinx Student Coalition, Safe Place, and Art Club co-sponsored a Martin Luther King Jr. Activities Forum. Students were able to share their thoughts about Dr. King and participate in activities that highlighted his civil and human rights advocacy in order to, in the words of his daughter, the Rev. Bernice King, move us from “the quotable King to the livable King.”

This year’s Junior Class Retreat focused on different experiences of prayer. Our hope is that students walked away with a diverse perspective of prayer and the ability to deepen their prayer lives.

Marian Catholic welcomed Bishop Kevin Birmingham for a Catholic Schools Week Mass, where faculty, staff, and students reflected on the memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas. A brilliant Dominican theologian, Aquainas embodied the pillar of study and pursued Truth throughout his life. It is fitting that the scholarly saint was recognized during Catholic Schools’ Week as we are all called to be Scholars With a Soul

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

After losing some critical cogs from a Women’s Basketball IHSA Elite Eight entry in 2021-22, Marian Catholic figured to be in a rebuilding phase with an extremely young team overall, as Khamille Jackson '23 returned as the lone senior starter.

Instead, the Spartans simply reloaded and eclipsed the 2021-22 overall record. Behind Illinois Basketball Coaches Association second-team all-stater Madison Davis '24, Marian Catholic concluded a 28-8 campaign by returning to the IHSA 3A Elite Eight, where it was just three points shy of the school’s sixth Final Four bid.

“Seniors Khamille Jackson and Mya Bradley led the way as seniors,” praised 10-year Head Coach Dan Murray, who also became Marian’s all-time leader in women’s basketball victories during the campaign.

“Their leadership helped a very young group to great heights, finishing the year 28-8 with Elmhurst Thanksgiving, Hillcrest Christmas, and IHSA regional and sectional titles.”

In putting together the program’s 23rd consecutive winning season, the Spartans also won their 24th IHSA regional title and 13th sectional championship. The 28 victories rank tied for seventh best in the history-rich program.

Perhaps not a rebuilding year in 2022-23, but the building blocks appear extremely impressive. At points in the second half of the supersectional setback to eventual third-place Peoria, the Spartans fielded a team of one junior, three sophomores and a freshman.

“The team has nine underclassmen to return for the 23-24 season, so there is hope for a lot of excitement next season,” added Murray, an IBCA Hall of Famer who has now authored 455 overall varsity victories at three schools.

Just a junior, Davis will look forward to another impressive final season, hoping to move up the Marian scoring ladder after joining the 1,000-point club this year.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Record-setting was also an adjective attached to the Men’s Basketball program. Ignited by senior starters Tre Davis, Cal-Poly bound Quentin Jones, and Donovan Juzang (all East Suburban Catholic all-conference selections), the Spartans notched a 26-8 record, equaling the fourth-best victory total in history.

The Spartans were led by 20-year mentor Mike Taylor, who had senior Casey Taylor at his side in an assistant coaching role. Also slated to be inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame and a member of the ESCC Hall of Fame, Coach Mike Taylor owns 427 career victories himself and is Marian’s all-time basketball leader in wins with 361. Robbed of a chance to win a sectional crown after COVID snuffed out a Sweet 16 appearance in 2020, Marian returned to sectional play this season after winning the Chicago Agricultural IHSA 3A Regional. That added to season hardware that included second-place in the Chicago Heights Classic and third place in the Hinsdale Holiday Classic.

The Spartans finished on a strong note with 13 victories in the last 15 contests, becoming the 10th Spartan men’s basketball squad to win 20 games and the sixth to hit the 25-victory plateau.

CHEERLEADING

Marian’s Competitive Cheerleading squad capped off an outstanding season with a 17th place finish at the IHSA State Meet in the Medium division, the Spartans’ best in history at that division. Paced by senior leadership from Jaliyah Bobo, Allyse Foreman, Brookelynn McKinney, Taylor Medlock, and Zaria Stewart, Marian Catholic posted a score of 85.28 in state competition.

The strong finish added to an impressive season resume that saw first-place finishes in the Marian ICCA Invite and the Andrew Winter Classic. Marian Catholic hosted two large invites this season, the Spartans also earning a second-place finish in the January Marian Catholic Invite.

FENCING

The Marian Catholic Men’s Fencing team finished 10-4 in dual meet competition and placed sixth overall at the Team Championship of the Great Lakes HS Fencing Conference. The Women’s Team had a 7-7 record in dual meets and finished ninth out of the 15 teams in the conference.

Varsity medalists for the men’s Team included senior foil fencer Salvatore Sorrentino, who placed second at the Libertyville/Vernon Hills Open, third at the Catholic Memorial Invitational and third at the Midwest HS Open at Culver. Senior epee fencer Rocco Raymond earned third at Libertyville/Vernon Hills and senior sabre fencer Nicholas Melbert was eighth at Libertyville/Vernon Hills.

This year, longtime coaches Ann Jones and Peter Lowther were joined by two fencers from the Class of 2014, Mary Hardig and Andrew Tolbert, who coached the Sabre and Epee squads, respectively.

WRESTLING

A familiar face made the IHSA State grade in Wrestling, as sophomore Joey Baranski advanced to the state meet for a second straight year after a fourth-place finish in the IHSA 2A Hinsdale South Sectional. Senior teammate Lloyd Mills, also a sectional qualifier along with Tanner Clasen, captured second place in the ESCC meet at 170 pounds.

November 2, 2022 - February 28, 2023 25 MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Financial Summary

If you were to look at the pie charts to the right, you would think Marian Catholic has more than doubled its fundraising in the course of the year –which is always possible! However, these numbers include total giving over the past eighteen months.

Historically, the school’s annual report has been published in the winter or spring and reflected giving for the prior academic year (July 1 to June 30), seven to ten months after-the-fact. To acknowledge your generosity in a more timely manner, the Advancement Office is changing the annual report to reflect giving for the prior calendar year (January 1 to December 30). This timeframe also matches the individual tax year. Because this annual report is the first we are changing and we did not want to exclude anyone, it includes all gifts from July 1, 2021, to December 30, 2022, during which total giving was $2.9 million.

Raising nearly $3 million in eighteen months is tremendous and only possible because of you. Giving during the 2021-2022 academic year alone was $1.9 million, a 33 percent increase over the prior year. This level of generosity reflects a community of alumni, family, and friends actively and increasingly invested in the school and its students. And that investment is paying dividends.

In the past five years, including the years of the pandemic, 95 percent of Marian Catholic graduates attended college, 90 percent attended a four-year college or university, and 23 percent attended a top 100 college or university (as determined by U.S. News and World Report). Marian Catholic students earned $81 million in college scholarships. Ninety-five Spartans signed college athletic commitments; and the Marian Catholic Marching Band won five more state championships.

To say that your generosity has opened doors for Marian Catholic students is an understatement.

Thank you for your continued support,

REPORT OF ALUMNI GIVING [ [
36 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2023

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

VVeritas VII, emceed by former NFL Bears player Chris Zorich, was full of celebration! During the evening, Marian Catholic commemorated the 150th Anniversary of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, presenting them with a painting of St. Dominic created by the school’s art program. As has become tradition, five more individuals were inducted into the Hall of Fame recognizing their career success, philanthropy, and service to Marian Catholic students. The night also included a live auction that featured luxurious trips, experiences, and packages: the chance to vacation at a villa in Greece, the beaches of Mexico, and the sunny wine country of California; the famous Instant Wine Cellar; a Night with the White Sox featuring a first pitch experience; and, the opportunity to have a Bears Tailgate Party with Chris Zorich! Veritas VII was the most successful ever, with a net profit of over $163,000! Students like Precious Ogundiran '23 and Marcus Bobbitt '23 are the beneficiaries of the generosity of all those who support the event.

Thank you to our Veritas VII sponsors!

“ Education is extremely important to my parents, and I appreciate the sacrifices they have made for my brother and I to have the best opportunity possible. At Marian, I’ve had the chance to explore my faith through Bible study and Kairos. And this year I was selected to be a Dominican Preacher…one of five faith leaders for the school. When I graduate this Spring, I will be the first in my family to attend college. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of God Almighty and my parents. But it also wouldn’t be possible without all of you.” –

“ Ever since I was little, I knew I would attend Marian. My mother, Nicole Wilkins Bobbitt is a graduate of the Class of 1991, and my sister, Alexandria, graduated in 2021 and now attends the University of Notre Dame. When I was in junior high, my father passed away and it placed an emotional and financial strain on us. I was no longer sure if I was going to be able to attend Marian. However, thanks to some of you in this room, I received a scholarship that made my education possible.”
