The Big Picture ...

Ashlee Hermosillo '24 achieved top honors by securing 1st Place Overall for High School and earning the distinction of 1st Place Best in Show for High School in the 2023 AKC Meet the Breeds Chicago Art Contest at the High School Level. In recognition of her artistic achievement, Ashlee’s work was showcased in New York City at the Museum of the Dog. Furthermore, she is set to receive additional prizes, underscoring her exemplary talent and dedication to the arts. Additionally, the American Kennel Club will extend a gift to Marian Catholic’s Visual Arts Department, further acknowledging the school’s contribution to fostering artistic excellence.

Champions don’t show up to get everything they want; they show up to give everything they have.”

–Alexander den Heijer

The world is filled with millions of silent champions – men and women who get up every day and give everything they have. Perhaps you are one of those people. You prepare yourself to handle the pressures and stresses of life without a ribbon or medal. You raise children, work at a demanding job to provide for your family, care for the infirmed, or educate young people. You donate to a charity or are the sympathetic ear for a person who is suffering. You don’t do these things for recognition, you do it because it is who you are.

In this issue of Marian Matters, we celebrate just a few of Marian Catholic’s champions. We recognize these men and women who showed up and gave everything they had for their team and their school. You will read about Greg Bimm and Jack Heneghan who dedicated most of their adult lives helping students realize their full potential. You will read about our athletic teams and fine arts students who transferred their discipline and dreams of being the best into notable achievements that will last the ages.

For all the champions mentioned in these pages and for those who silently run the races every day, thank you for your passion. Thank you for your tenacity. Thank you for expecting the best of yourself. For in expecting the best in yourself, you challenge each of us to become the best version of ourselves. May we recognize your example and become the champions God intends us to become.

Our world could use more champions.

Blessings,

A Night of

Champions

On October 13, 2023, hundreds of alumni, friends, and families braved the rain to gather in celebration of Marian Catholic’s Night of Champions.

The event paid tribute to Marian Catholic’s state and national achievements in both athletics and the arts; recognized the anniversaries of the 1993 football state champions and 2013 women’s basketball state champions; and honored two men who have left an immeasurable imprint on the school, Mr. Greg Bimm, Director of Bands from 1977 to 2023, and Mr. Jack Heneghan, school administrator from 1978 to 2023.

During the evening, both men delivered heartfelt speeches which captured their humility, faith, and dedication, and moved those in attendance to both tears and laughter.

The school presented Jack Heneghan with two surprises. First, President Vince Krydynski '81 revealed plans to establish The Heneghan Family Kairos Endowment, which will allow students with financial need to attend the senior Kairos Retreat. Heneghan attended the first boys’ Kairos in 1988 and continued to serve as an adult leader for 35 years. Second, Krydynski revealed that the school’s main entrance would be renamed “Heneghan Way” in recognition of the guidance Jack offered decades of students.

The night also featured the unveiling of the Wall of Champions, named in honor of Greg Bimm. As President Krydynski stated in his remarks, Mr. Bimm’s accomplishments are innumerable; his impact on music

education extends beyond Marian Catholic to marching bands across the country. Greg is not driven by accolades or awards however, but by genuine care for his students and “a love of music and music played well.”

As Mr. Krydynski also shared, efforts are underway to create the school’s first-ever endowed position, Director of Bands, in Mr. Bimm’s name.

The Wall of Champions, located in the northeast corner of Mattio stadium, celebrates the Marian Catholic Band’s many national and state awards; any athletic or speech team that placed eighth or higher in state competition; and individual state champions in athletics or speech. The flagpole which commemorates Lieutenant Commander Patrick J. Murphy '81 who died in the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon, stands in the center of the wall.

There is a real beauty in the fact that students will walk from the Sister Mary Paul McCaughey, OP Leadership Center, past the Wall of Champions honoring Greg Bimm, and into Dave Mattio Stadium. These stalwarts of the Marian Catholic Community embody the school’s four areas of excellence: faith, academics, arts, and athletics. The Night of Champions recognized those students, teachers, and coaches who have come before and who inspire the next generation of Spartans.

DOMINICAN LEGACY PILLAR AWARD

Greg Bimm

 Greg Bimm and the Marian Catholic Band Program are synonymous with excellence. Mention you’re with Marian Catholic at any band competition and there is immediate recognition and respect.

Greg’s interest in music began at an early age. Both his father and grandfather played trumpet; under his father’s steadfast guidance, he continued the family tradition. It didn’t take long for Greg to fall in love with band; by the time he finished fifth grade, he knew he wanted to be a band director. He was fortunate to participate in an exceptional band program at LaSalle-Peru High School, led by two master music educators. The experience solidified Greg’s career choice even further, ultimately leading him to pursue a

bachelor’s degree in music education at Illinois State University followed by a master’s degree in music education with an emphasis in instrumental conducting from Western Illinois. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music Education by Chicago’s Vandercook College of Music in 2012.

Greg “stumbled” into working at Marian Catholic. His 46-year journey began with a call from a friend in the area who told him, “There is an opening up here. The band is not really strong, but it might have potential.” After consulting with his mentors, Greg spoke with Principal Sr. Mary Alberta, OP and Sr. Annaclare, OP, who had started the band program and was chair of the Fine Arts Department. He was offered the job with Sr. Annaclare’s approval and blessing. It turned out to be the perfect fit for him and Marian Catholic.

Greg recognized early on that the Marian Band Program definitely had potential. In addition to the Dominican Sisters’ respect and support for the arts, Marian Catholic students were used to a high level of expectations. Faculty and staff were able to talk openly about faith-related values and were committed to pursuing excellence. It was an environment where Greg knew he had the opportunity to build something special.

And he has. Under Mr. Bimm’s direction, the Marian Catholic Band has earned hundreds of awards and honors, and has become one of the premier high school band programs in the United States. In addition to seven Grand National marching championships and 42 state titles in class, the band has appeared in the Macy’s, Presidential Inaugural, and Rose parades. Marian’s concert bands have performed at numerous major state and national conventions; the Symphonic Band remains undefeated in the Chicagoland State of the Art Catholic High School Band Contest since 1981. Marian’s band program is one of only a few in the country to have been awarded both the Sudler Flag for concert band and Sudler Shield for marching band by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Band programs across the country have incorporated Marian Catholic’s model of peer teaching and servant leadership. Marian band students quickly learn the importance of P.R.I.D.E., an acronym for Personal Responsibility in Daily Effort. P.R.I.D.E. emphasizes the need for each of us to understand our personal responsibilities and the consequences to ourselves and others if they are neglected. Recognizing and fulfilling those individual responsibilities

requires daily effort. It is a valuable lesson, one that applies to all facets of life.

When he’s not in the band room, Greg arranges music for concert and marching band, writes marching band drill, and studies new band music. He often serves as a clinician, judge, or guest conductor. While Greg “retired” from Marian in 2023, he continues to serve in an emeritus role in the advancement office, as well as a consultant to the band program. He is also considering writing a book on the band techniques used at Marian.

What Greg values most, however, is spending time with his family including wife Connie, son Jeff '99, and daughter Jessica (Bimm '02) Rosati. Connie has taught band at private schools in the south suburbs for 40 years, beginning with the “Marian Parochial Band.”

Jeff is involved with musical instrument repair, while Greg’s nephew hand-makes high-level professional trumpets. Grandson Charlie is the fifth Bimm generation to play trumpet!

Some might be surprised to know that in addition to a long list of band composers, Greg’s playlist includes Crosby, Stills and Nash, Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears, The Temptations, James Taylor, Carol King, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, and Willie Nelson! The band’s warm-up “Almighty Father” from Leonard Bernstein’s “MASS” pays tribute to another legendary musician, as well as Marian Catholic’s Dominican heritage. It is a reverent prayer that Marian band students carry with them throughout their life.

Almighty Father, incline thine ear: Bless us and all those who have gathered here Thine angel send us Who shall defend us all And fill with grace

All who dwell in this place.

Amen

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

Dr. Steven Potts, DO '77

 Growing up in a family that values Catholic education, attending a Catholic high school was never a question for Dr. Steven Potts, DO '77. After graduating from St. Jude Apostle in South Holland, Dr. Pott’s family moved to Crete, so going to Marian Catholic was a given. His 45-minute bus ride with approximately 25 stops along the way, seemed to take forever. Looking back, however, Steve considers it a worthwhile journey. Marian Catholic was a great place to be.

Starting at a new high school where he really didn’t know anyone was a challenge, but Dr. Potts found the confidence to run for class office. He credits the environment at Marian Catholic for encouraging him and other students to engage in activities outside their comfort zone. In addition to being involved in student council (he served as class president his junior and senior year), Steve focused on opportunities to nurture his interest in science. He was one of 12-13 students selected by science teacher Mr. Vince Zerante '70 for a special college-level session, a precursor to future AP classes.

Dr. Potts attended Loyola University as a pre-med major where he continued to seek leadership activities. His inspiration to study medicine was grounded in his inherent love of science, his natural curiosity, and the intellectual challenge of the field. Following Loyola, Steve received his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where he also completed an internship,

followed by a residency in internal medicine at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and a fellowship at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. A fellow in the American College of Physicians, Steve’s unique career enables him to alternate between Northwestern’s academic university setting where he continues to teach a clinical ethics seminar twice a year, and Advocate Illinois Masonic where he is chair of the Department of Medicine with 14 section chiefs reporting to him. Steve also holds a two-year master’s degree in safety and quality from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

Marian Catholic holds a special place in Steve’s heart. Marian provided a nurturing environment that enabled him to grow and learn, especially about becoming a man and a Christian. And it was with the expectation that you were going to succeed in life; that’s why you were at Marian. No question, the presence of the Dominican Sisters had a great impact on his education. Their strength, enthusiasm, and focus on goodness lent great structure to the environment and grounded students. The sisters also instilled in him that who you are and what you do with your life are far more important than any accolades.

Scholarships like the one established in the name of Steve’s parents, the Richard and Ann Potts Academic Scholarship, are a lasting legacy of good. The Potts family has already seen a two-to-three fold return on their investment in terms of the amount of money they’ve been able to give to students, some of whom would otherwise have had to leave school and not experience a Marian Catholic education. For Steve, Marian Catholic is a jewel in the South Suburbs. He believes scholarships like his family’s are vital to maintaining the school’s stability and that of the community. Marian has a great future thanks to alumni like Dr. Potts. We are proud to recognize him as a 2024 Alumnus of the Year.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

Dr. Michael Wilczynski, DO '77

 Born and raised in Chicago Heights, Dr. Michael Wilczynski, DO '77 holds deep roots in the community and a profound connection to Marian Catholic.

A true Marian Catholic legacy, Dr. Wilczynski’s paternal grandfather, prominent local lawyer Stanley Wilczynski Sr., played a pivotal role in bringing Marian Catholic to Chicago Heights. Chairman of the Special Gifts Committee of the Building Fund Campaign, Stanley Sr. recognized the value a Catholic high school would bring to the south suburbs. Raised in a home with a strong Catholic foundation, Dr. Wilczynski attended St. Agnes for grade school and naturally progressed to Marian Catholic along with siblings Stanley '74, Paul '80, and Susan (Wilczynski '85) Graj. His experiences at Marian played a significant role in shaping his life.

During his time at Marian Catholic, Dr. Wilczynski was not only a dedicated student, but also an active participant in numerous extracurricular activities. He played football under Coach Dave Mattio '66 and Coach Bob Bergstrom all four years, demonstrating his commitment and leadership skills, and building lifelong friendships with his teammates along the way. Dr. Wilczynski’s membership in the National Honor Society and student council, along with his volunteer service, were evidence of his holistic approach to life.

After graduating from Marian Catholic, Dr. Wilczynski attended the University of Notre Dame; he earned his medical

degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1986. His medical career continued with an internship and diagnostic radiology residency at Chicago Osteopathic Medical Centers, culminating in 1990.

Dr. Wilczynski’s pursuit of excellence led him to specialize in neuroradiology, completing fellowships at Evanston Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital in 1991 and 1992 respectively. He was granted board certification in diagnostic radiology from the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology (AOBR) in 1991 and neuroradiology in 1993.

Recognized for his contributions to the field, Dr. Wilczynski became an active Member of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (AOCR) in 1991, and was honored with Fellowship in 2007. He has dedicated a significant portion of his career to education, serving as the program director for the diagnostic radiology residency program at Franciscan St. James Health in Olympia Fields, Illinois from 2011-2016. His professional commitment is further evidenced by significant leadership roles on the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology (AOBR) and the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (AOCR). Currently, Dr. Wilczynski practices radiology at Radiology Partners and is on staff at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, Ingalls Memorial in Harvey, and Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Wilczynski is passionate about volunteering and giving back to the community. While at Marian, he and his friends volunteered at Oak Forest Hospital. He later joined the Global Volunteers Program, traveling to Poland multiple times to teach English to school-age children.

Dr. Wilczynski has remained involved with Marian Catholic by participating in Reunion Committees, Career Days, and being a part of the Religious and Spiritual Planning Committee during Marian’s first capital campaign. He continues to serve those in need through his work with Catholic Charities.

In honor of his parents and the sacrifices they made to send Dr. Wilczynski and his siblings to Marian Catholic, Michael established the Stanley and Eva Wilczynski Scholarship to help other students who might not otherwise have the means to attend Marian. A testament to the values of his upbringing and the spirit of Marian Catholic, his journey is an inspiration to all. We celebrate Dr. Wilczynski’s remarkable achievements with welldeserved recognition as a 2024 Alumnus of the Year.

Melissa’s legacy continues to shine brightly as she leaves an indelible mark on the world of sports and medicine.

SPIRIT OF MARIAN

Gerry O'Brien

 Marian Catholic’s Director of College Counseling, Gerry O’Brien, is the epitome of team spirit. In the fall, you’ll find him on the sidelines of Marian football games as part of the “chain gang,” giving him one of the best views of the action. During basketball season, Gerry is the face of Marian Catholic, greeting visitors at the front gate as they enter the school. During volleyball season, he’s seated at the scorer’s table, helping facilitate games. And in soccer season, he’s in the press box, running the clock. Gerry is a Spartan fanatic in every sense of the word!

In a foreshadowing of things to come, Gerry attended Chicago’s Quigley South for high school, home of the blue and gold Spartans. It was there that he first met Fr. Bill O’Mara who was teaching and coaching several sports in addition

to serving as athletic director. Following graduation, Gerry attended Loyola University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. After college, Fr. O’Mara offered Gerry a job teaching theology at a high school in Tyler, Texas.

Although Gerry didn’t make the move, he later found himself working with his former teacher at Marian Catholic. Gerry’s career path included a year teaching theology at Marist High School, seven at Notre Dame High School, and three at Quigley South where he was also varsity soccer coach for the 1987, '88, and '89 seasons. He settled in at Marian in 1990 as a counselor and theology teacher and has served as Marian’s Director of College Counseling since the 2001-2002 school year. In addition to meeting with students and their families, Gerry coordinates career days, college fairs, and visits with admissions representatives, guiding countless Spartans as they prepare for the next phase of life.

Gerry is also filled with another spirit – the Holy Spirit. He attended Kairos Retreat 33 as a candidate; Kairos 40 was his first as an adult leader. Since then, Gerry has been a member of the leadership team for some 30 Retreats and given talks at several others. Gerry, along with the rest of the team, provide young men the opportunity to share their faith and grow in their relationships with God and each other. He is truly a mentor for students in all facets of their lives, including his son Tim '03 and daughter Ellen '06.

When he’s not at school, you’re likely to find Gerry enjoying a baseball game (he’s a White Sox season ticket holder), on the golf course, or rooting for Notre Dame. While he would love to one day be in the gallery at the British Open at St. Andrews, his life is very full at Marian Catholic. Gerry is no doubt where God intended him to be, setting the world, and our students, on fire. We are proud to recognize him with the 2024 Spirit of Marian Award.

The entire Marian Catholic Community gathered for an assembly to honor the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. where the Black Student Union shared Dr. King’s inspiring journey, recounting his impactful life and reciting excerpts from his powerful speech, “What’s Your Life’s Blueprint,” delivered just six months before his tragic assassination in October 1967.

Highlights included the insightful reflections of keynote speaker Dr. Kim Lymore, a dedicated member of The Faith Community of Saint Sabina since 1983, vocal music by Psalmist Dr. Nina Sutton from Freedom Church in Lansing, and performances by Marian Catholic’s choir and praise dancers.

Campus Ministry

In a tribute to the legacy St. Dominic left through the founding of the Order of Preachers over 800 years ago, Marian Catholic’s four main hallways were renamed after prominent Dominican saints. Together these four inspirational men and women represent the four Dominican pillars of preaching, prayer, study, and community.

1st Hall: St. Catherine of Siena (Siena Hall) set the world on fire with her devotion, service to the sick and poor, and her influence on the church, eventually becoming a Doctor of the Church and the patron saint of journalists, media, and nursing.

2nd Hall: Rose of Lima (Lima Hall) lived a life of piety, chastity, and extreme devotion, becoming the patroness of Latin America and the Philippines, as well as embroiderers, gardeners, florists, and those facing family problems.

3rd Hall: St. Thomas Aquinas (Aquinas Hall) an Italian Dominican friar and priest, overcame initial doubts and is known for his profound theology, including the influential Summa Theologica, becoming the patron saint of students and universities.

4th Hall: St. Martin de Porres (de Porres Hall) overcame discrimination and poverty to become a Dominican lay brother known for his medical miracles, making him the patron saint of public health workers, people of mixed race, innkeepers, and barbers.

Campus Ministry continues to provide unique opportunities for students to deepen their faith life: Students, faculty, and staff strengthened their connection with God and created lasting memories during Kairos 216 and Kairos 217. Being able to share Mass, prayer, class retreats, and Kairos are blessings that help further build the Marian Catholic community and the kingdom of God.

toys and blankets for furry friends in shelters; creating beautiful bracelets for pediatric cancer patients; building a Day of the Dead Altar (Ofrenda) for Union Street Gallery; sprucing up the school courtyard; painting a mural outside the school’s chapel; and crafting heartfelt cards for various veteran and healthcare groups.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Marian Catholic’s LatinX Hispanic Student Coalition held a Spanish Mass led by Father Gary Graf, pastor at Our Lady of the Heights. The special liturgy was organized by Spanish teachers Mrs. Sylvia (Sarmiento '77) Cifelli and Mrs. Lorena Dominguez, with students JohnLuca Sanchez '25 and Melissa Rodriguez '25 serving as readers.

A group of Marian Catholic students attended a Respect Life Prayer Service sponsored by Franciscan Health and led by Bishop Robert J. McClory of the Diocese of Gary. Students prayed with other Catholic schools for a “radical solidarity” of support for unborn babies and the mothers who will care for them. Alumna Alison Powell '07 was also in attendance to lead worship for the service.

Off-campus projects included: visiting local Catholic grade schools; cleaning St. Paul’s Lutheran Church; helping at the NAWS Humane Society; and supporting local organizations dedicated to addressing the needs of individuals and families such as Respond Now and Habitat for Humanity.

Linda Hansen, Vice President of Ministry and Mission, emphasized the significance of the day, stating, “Our yearly Day of Service encourages our students to use their God-given gifts and to step outside of their comfort zone in the service of others. It allows them to practice the Dominican charisms of prayer, study, community, and preaching,” said Hansen. “We pray for those we will be serving at the beginning of our day; students learn about different organizations that help people; and they work as a community and preach from the pulpit of their lives in loving service.”

The event not only allowed students to provide tangible assistance to various segments

of the community, but also served as a meaningful platform for them to learn about different organizations and causes that make a positive impact on the lives of others.

As Marian Catholic High School continues to uphold its mission of nurturing serviceminded individuals, it is clear that the annual Day of Service plays a vital role in shaping the school’s students into caring, compassionate, and community-focused leaders.

After All These Years, I’m Still a Band Kid at Heart

Caroline Bell '19, a senior creative writing major at Loyola University frequently writes for The Loyola Phoenix, the school’s student newspaper. Caroline’s opinion piece about her experience with the Marian Catholic Band was recently published in The Phoenix in December. In it, she explores the lessons she learned along the way playing trumpet, clarinet, and bassoon. Former members of the band, students and parents alike, will appreciate her reflections.

The number one piece of advice I was given going into college was to not let who I was and what I did in high school become my entire personality. College would give me a fresh start with new people. I could become whoever I wanted to be.

Needless to say, I failed to take that advice. I was a band kid in high school a detail my college friends are well aware of. I’m guilty of slipping off-topic, band-related stories into conversations. I make my family rewatch my old marching band performances every fall. Whenever my high school friends and I get together, we reminisce about mishaps during practices and stories our band director used to tell.

To be fair, my entire high school experience revolved around band marching band, specifically. During the fall, we practiced almost every day of the week, including during school. Fridays meant football games, and Saturdays were reserved for either competitions or full-day practices.

It was invigorating yet exhausting. We marched in the dead of summer, heat rising from the blacktop as we repeated the same sets over and over. We tossed hand warmers back and forth during the winter, our bare fingers too stiff to play our instruments. I quickly learned the words “one more time” actually meant we’d be there another half hour.

But I wouldn’t have traded it for the world.

I enjoyed the challenge that came with playing complicated music and marching intricate drills. I learned to cherish the late-night practices, long bus rides and even the drama within the trumpet section, which I was a member of. But above all, I loved being part of a group that felt like a second family weird uncles and overbearing mothers included.

Marching band taught me some valuable lessons which shaped me into who I am today. I was taught that every mistake affected the entire band. If I didn’t know the music, the judges would only hear my blunders. If I moved at the wrong time, the judges would only see my misstep.

Our band director constantly preached “personal responsibility in daily effort” or P.R.I.D.E. and encouraged us to actively work to better ourselves, both on and off the field. As long as I was confident in the work I put in throughout the season, I would be confident in my performance at competitions.

As the years went on, I began to feel more self-assured.

On the field, I learned to speak up when I had suggestions to offer. I found that I was capable of being a leader even if I wasn’t in an official leadership position.

Off the field, I learned to surround myself with genuinely good people.

To this day, my very best friends are the people I met through band. I’m immediately shocked whenever I hear someone say they don’t talk to people they went to high school with anymore, because that’s my support system those are the people I know like the back of my hand.

Every marching season ended with Bands of America Grand National Championships, a national marching band competition that brings around 110 bands together to determine the best of the best. Because Loyola lacks a marching band although we do have a pep band I get my marching band fix at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium every November.

This past Nov. 11, I watched from the stands as my high school marching band performed the same song that closed out my freshman year show in 2016. I had goosebumps as I sang along to the same trumpet part I played seven years ago. I’ll admit, I sobbed. I couldn’t help myself.

I imagined my friends and I on that same field, playing that same song at 14 years old. I remembered how soft the turf felt under my shoes, how the echo of the stadium rang in my ears. At that moment, I ached to be part of the group — to be marching on that field just one more time.

I thought about how far I’ve come. My life has changed immensely in the nearly four years since high school. I’ve lived through a pandemic, lost loved ones and had to reckon with the realities of adulthood. But marching band has always been there, whether I’m watching my younger brothers march at competitions or singing songs from old performances on FaceTime with my friends.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ll probably never stop talking about marching band, but I’ve got good reason not to. Marching band gave me my best friends. It helped me bond with my brothers. It taught me how to move through life with confidence. And for that, I’m forever grateful.

Champions in Athletics Fall Athletics Accomplishments

In a program deep in tradition for decades, the breaking of records is not taken lightly. But for good measure, Marian Catholic junior cross country runner Daniel Kasperan is making sure he sets a few of them.

A qualifier for the IHSA state meet a second straight year (and also a track and field state qualifier), Kasperan set the school record for three miles in Peoria this fall with a 15:15 clocking. The mark was good for 33rd place in Class 2A, topped only by his 28th place in the 2022 state meet, the best-ever IHSA state finish for a Spartan.

“As I look back on cross country history at Marian, I’m struck by how attitude and work ethic are qualities I remember in our greatest runners,” said 31-year Head Coach and ESCC Hall of Famer Tim Sovereign.

“Daniel Kasperan is no exception. His training, his commitment, his personal faith, and his positive attitude all contribute to his success, and I am grateful for his effort and his contribution to Marian Cross Country.”

An outstanding student leader in many circles at Marian Catholic, Kasperan actually broke his OWN school record of 15:35 set this year at the Niles West Invite. That three-mile record mark had stood since 2005 (John Walter). The second-place finisher in the Thornridge Regional, Kasperan also earned ten top-five finishes in the 12 regular season meets he ran.

The Spartan football team continued its unblemished record in CCL-ESCC Red Division play by winning its third crown in as many tries in that league. Sparked by University of Kansas-bound senior Austin Alexander and eight All-Red Division selections, Marian Catholic also won its first Prep Bowl decision since 2002 with a triumph over Saint Patrick.

After winning its eighth consecutive IHSA Regional crown, the Marian Catholic women’s volleyball squad advanced to the IHSA Sweet 16 and a berth in the Kankakee IHSA Class 3A finals following postseason conquests of Brooks, Oak Forest, and Tinley Park. The Spartans were led by ESCC all-conference standouts Michelle Charles '24 and Sarah Gordon '26.

ALL of Marian’s Fall Sports programs have qualified for the IHSA Team Academic Award which requires a minimum Team GPA of 3.0 (unweighted) based only on varsity student athletes’ grades during 1st semester.

CONGRATULATIONS TO:

Cheer - 3.863

Men’s Cross Country - 3.853

Football - 3.261

Men’s Golf - 3.658

Men’s Soccer - 3.764

Women’s Tennis - 3.754

Women’s Volleyball - 3.804

The Marian men’s soccer team also turned in its finest season since 2014 with a 15-10-1 overall mark, including the championship of the Marian IHSA Class 2A Regional after wins over Providence Catholic and Oak Forest. Leadership from ESCC All-Conference selections Antonio Ferreira '25, Jalen Williams '24 and Langston Wilson-Ahlstrom '26 also helped key a third-place finish in the New Berlin, Wisconsin. Invite.

Celebrating Coach Taylor Dave Letourneau Takes Over Reins of Marian Catholic Baseball Program

Author of more than 400 men’s high school basketball victories, former Marian Catholic men’s basketball coach and current assistant athletic director Mike Taylor will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 4 at his alma mater, Illinois State University. Taylor won 361 games at Marian Catholic, including three IHSA Elite Eight appearances, nine regional titles and 20-win seasons, and third place at the 2017-18 IHSA 3A state tournament.

Coach Taylor is also a member of the East Suburban Catholic Conference Hall of Fame. He was honored at a pregame ceremony at Marian Catholic on January 26.

Hoping to get back to the IHSA Elite Eight status it achieved two years ago, Marian Catholic welcomes Dave Letourneau as its new head varsity baseball coach for the 2024 season.

Coming from a strong program at Catholic League power St. Rita, Letourneau has worked under some of the best baseball minds on the South Side.

A Chicago native and St. Rita alumnus, Letourneau played collegiately at Moraine Valley and Graceland University in Iowa, and spent time as a graduate assistant at Graceland. After graduating from college, he became the head freshman coach at St. Rita and was promoted to head sophomore coach two years later.

Letourneau has been the varsity assistant for the Mustang’s the last five seasons.

“I am excited to build a winning culture for a special program,” explained Letourneau, who looks forward to the challenge of competing in one of Illinois’ finest leagues, the East Suburban Catholic Conference. “Building a winning culture demands commitment, passion, and dedication both on and off the field. I am ecstatic about the future of the Marian Catholic High School baseball program.”

Letourneau’s vast and varied experience will provide an edge for a Marian Catholic program that won a 2012 IHSA state title, earned a second-place IHSA finish in 2017 and recently qualified for the 2021 IHSA Elite Eight.

“Dave possesses a plethora of experience against the best competition to have the skills to lead a quality program, from the varsity level on down,” explained Athletic Director Kevin Kelly. “His attention to detail will be a huge asset in player development and an outstanding value system makes him an ideal fit for Marian Catholic. He will set lofty goals and work hard to get athletes to the next level, doing so with a built-for-success off-season and practice agenda.”

Letourneau has also worked as a head coach in the Midwest Collegiate League, giving him a great background and wealth of resources to help Marian athletes get to the next level.

“I am extremely excited about this opportunity as head baseball coach at Marian Catholic High School,” said Letourneau. “It is always difficult leaving a place you love; but this is an opportunity for me that has always been a dream of mine and this is a decision that is best for me and my family as it brings a new challenge and chapter into our lives. We could not be happier for what the future holds for us and we are excited to be a part of the Marian Catholic family.”

Taking it to the Next Level

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT 2001

Dr. James Siegert, DO

Since its founding in 1990, Marian Catholic’s Endowment Golf Classic has raised over $2.6 million for student scholarships with approximately 50 students receiving scholarships each year. One of those students was Dr. James Siegert '01, who shared his story at this year’s 34th EGC, in particular, the important role Marian Catholic played in his journey to becoming a doctor. Siegert spoke of his childhood, delivering pies to the Sisters at St. Agnes and Marian Catholic during the holiday season, caddying at Olympia Fields Country Club, and the heartbreaking loss of his father who passed away the summer before his freshman year. He explained, “In that particularly vulnerable moment of my life, at the age of thirteen, without a Marian education and the people in its walls to serve as guideposts, I’m certain my life would have taken a different path.”

The path Dr. Siegert took led him to his career as a Urological Surgeon. Following graduation from Marian Catholic in 2001, he attended Loyola University where he double majored in Biology and Neurosciences. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Siegert attended medical school, completing a research fellowship and a five year surgical residency at Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is currently a urological surgeon based at Franciscan Health in Olympia Fields, where he specializes in the management of prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers. Dr. Siegert is also Director of the Urological Surgery Residency program where his responsibilities include educating and training the next generation of future urologists.

Dr. Siegert is proud to be able to serve the needs of the community that he grew up in. “I had the good fortune of being able to begin my practice in the community I was born, raised, and educated; a community I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to.” During his time at Marian Catholic, Dr. Siegert was involved in football all four years, establishing a work ethic that still drives him today.

His time spent with his team and coaches were an important part of his high school years. One of his favorite football memories is the final and most important preparation before games, a prayer service in the chapel. It was time he and his teammates spent in silence, focused on prayer and meditation. “There were no coaches present to discuss game plans and strategy,” shared Dr. Siegert. “No parents to cheer us on, just the players centering ourselves on our faith, our team, and our responsibilities as young Marian men.”

The strong values in faith and service to others Marian instilled in Dr. Siegert are evident in his life today. As a senior, he volunteered at a hospital as part of Mr. Heneghan’s Discovery in Service class. He credits Mr. Heneghan’s relentless example of placing the needs of others before yourself as a reason why he himself has become such a selfless individual. Dr. Siegert also attended the Kairos Retreat as both an attendee and a leader.

He feels his many leadership roles at Marian Catholic enabled him to become an effective communicator, and believes that Marian provided him with a rigorous academic foundation, self discipline, and preparedness, not just for college but for life’s future challenges.

Dr. Siegert has made numerous contributions throughout his professional career, but he is most proud of the family he has built with Michelle, his wife of eleven years. They reside in Elmhurst, Illinois with their two wonderful children, James Francis (8), and Siena Marie (6). Both children attend Catholic school just as their father did when he was their age.

“Fortunately

for me and my brother, Joe Siegert '05, we reaped the benefits of my mother’s sacrifices for us in obtaining a strong academic foundation rooted in service to others.”

He thanks his mother for showing him the importance of strong Catholic family values. Dr. Siegert’s service to others extends past his professional careers into his family life, where he enjoys coaching his son’s football, basketball, and baseball teams. There he witnesses his son developing into a caring, kind hearted soul with a burning desire to improve. Much like her father, his daughter Siena has a commitment to family and helping others.

Dr. Siegert is a true example of a scholar with a soul. His work within the south suburban community allows him to continue making connections with Marian Catholic alumni, often working with and caring for them on a daily basis. His professional accolades and strong ties to the Marian Catholic community make him the perfect person to share advice with our current students, “Lean in, it’s never too late to get involved or meet new people. While getting out of your comfort zone can be uncomfortable at first, you’ll later recognize it as growth. Marian Catholic and the people within its walls, represent unlimited future resources, references, and foundation for future growth.”

Four Years a Student, Forever a Spartan!

There’s something special about reconnecting with old friends and classmates. It’s an opportunity to reminisce, catch up on old times, and show support and appreciation for the people and places that helped shape who you are today. In the fall of 2023, classes of '68, '73, '83, '93, '03, '13, and '18 were able to reconnect with old friends and make new memories.

2023 Financial Summary

–Daniel Lubetsky, Founder KIND Snacks/Starts With Us/Camino Partners/ SOMOS/OneVoice/Empatico “

We all have a responsibility to try and make this world better, whether it’s through our work, the causes we champion, the way that we treat people, or the values we impart to the next generation.”

Dear Friends,

Walk through the halls of Marian Catholic and you will encounter champions. You will meet students who are champions in the classroom, on the field, on stage, and in the community. Regardless of the setting, they all share common traits, reflective of the values of an education grounded in Dominican traditions. These champions are responsible, disciplined, determined, and exhibit integrity and respect. They strive for excellence in all facets of their lives. They are taught by champion teachers who lead, inspire, and empower. Teachers who create champions. We are all better because of their commitment!

You, however, are their champions! Your support enables students to excel in the classroom and achieve success at Marian and beyond. Fundraising in 2023, totaled over $1.6 million with the majority directed toward scholarships, offering numerous students the opportunity to learn in an environment that fosters both their intellectual and personal growth. Your attendance at events like Veritas and the Endowment Golf Classic, as well as participation in Marian Catholic’s Day of Giving, show that you are truly 4 Marian!

With the end of the Invest in Kids Program, the number of families seeking financial support from the school will no doubt increase. Last year 23 students at Marian Catholic received a scholarship through the Invest in Kids Program, but an additional 142 Spartans were on the waitlist. We are committed to ensuring that all of those who live in the south suburbs have the option of attending Marian. Marian Catholic is vital to the community and you are vital to Marian Catholic.

On behalf of Marian Catholic’s Board of Directors, thank you for your generosity. With your continued assistance, we look forward to guiding the school in fulfilling the mission established by our Dominican Sisters 65 years ago and continuing the tradition of Teaching Scholars, and Champions, with a Soul.

Sincerely,

Marian Catholic Board of Directors

In Memoriam Jack Heneghan 1943-2023

An integral part of the Marian Catholic Community since 1978, the passing of Mr. John “Jack” Heneghan on Friday, November 17, 2023 marked the end of a remarkable journey. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of compassion and love.

Jack’s career at Marian Catholic High School began 45 years ago, in 1978, when he was recruited by Sr. Alberta to work in the Advancement Office. God had other plans for Jack however; God knew Jack would serve as an exemplary role model for young people; Jack was moved into the classroom and later into administration where he had the opportunity to interact more with Marian Catholic students.

Jack often spent many hours during the school day helping students find their way, academically, socially, and personally. Jack was there to lend a listening ear with a gentle and understanding heart, while at the same time, challenging them with the Truth.

Although the Truth might be difficult for students to hear, Jack was sure to follow up with them time and again to make sure that they navigated their way to the Truth. He also lived the truths he asked the students to live and he shared that fact with many young men on Kairos retreats. After all, it was Jack Heneghan, along with Sr. Barbara Mary Blesse, who brought Kairos to Marian Catholic. The Kairos program, which marked 35 years at Marian Catholic in 2023, remained dear to his heart throughout the years.

Fr. Bill O’Mara opened his homily at Jack’s funeral by imagining that God welcomed Jack by saying, “Jack, your faculty, staff and students are right, you do sound like me.” Jack’s “voice of God” commanded attention and spoke from the depths of his heart. His loving care and concern for others brought an experience of God to everyone he encountered. Fr. O’Mara told the congregation that Jack followed the example of Jesus whom we hear in the Gospel is“the Way, the Truth and the Life.”

From his youth at St. Raymond Catholic grammar school to Joliet Catholic High School, to Loyola University of Chicago and later Notre Dame, Mr. Heneghan exhibited the Life of Christ. He gave of himself to everyone he met. He sacrificed many hours to help struggling students and teachers. His family, wife Pat, their two children, Tim '94 and Maggie '97, and his two grandchildren, C.J. '20 and Arya, were always in his heart. And he treated others he met with the same care that he gave his own family. He certainly preached from the pulpit of his life, pouring out all the grace God gave him.

A gentleman in every sense, Mr. Heneghan leaves behind a legacy that will be forever cherished and remembered. His unwavering commitment to our community, his infectious spirit, and his dedication to fostering meaningful connections have left an indelible mark on the lives of countless students and families, faculty, and staff. Jack was the full embodiment of one of his favorite Scripture passages: You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

Jack Heneghan, good and faithful servant of Jesus, rest in peace.
