One of the blessings I have experienced during my first year as Marian Catholic High School’s Principal was the opportunity to serve and lead alongside our retiring President, Vince Krydynski '81. In the short time I have worked with Vince, I have been inspired by his strong faith and deep love for the Marian Catholic community. His dedication to the Dominican Charisms of Prayer, Study, Preaching, and Community has strengthened Marian Catholic’s foundation and ensured that the school remains a place where students cultivate their talents, embrace personal responsibility, and demonstrate ethical leadership and Christian service. Please join me in praying for Vince and his family as he moves into the next chapter of his life, and in expressing deep gratitude for the service and leadership he has provided throughout his long and distinguished career at Marian Catholic.
As we look to the future, we are excited to welcome both the Class of 2029 and Marian Catholic’s new President, Dr. Michael Riordan '85. The newest Spartans will soon walk the halls and become part of the Marian Catholic tradition, and we are eager to guide and support them as they grow in faith, knowledge, and service. At the same time, Dr. Riordan, a proud member of the Class of 1985, brings a deep love for Marian Catholic and a wealth of leadership experience as a former high school principal and superintendent of schools. His passion for Marian Catholic’s mission ensures that our school is in good hands, and I look forward to working alongside him to continue shaping the future of the community.
This year, we also have the privilege of celebrating the outstanding individuals being inducted into the Hall of Fame. These alumni and community members have made remarkable contributions that exemplify the values we hold dear. Their dedication to excellence and service serves as an inspiration to Marian Catholic students and is a testament to the lifelong impact of a Marian Catholic education. With an exciting future ahead, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue leading and serving this incredible community. Together, we will build upon the strong foundation and remain committed to the mission of Marian Catholic High School.
Go Spartans!

In Gratitude
THE ENDURING IMPACT OF VINCE KRYDYNSKI '81
As President Vince Krydynski '81 approaches his retirement at the conclusion of the 2024-25 school year, we take this moment to reflect with deep gratitude on his unwavering dedication and profound impact on Marian Catholic High School. Vince’s journey with Marian Catholic has been a lifelong one—woven through his experiences as a student, board member, alumnus parent, donor, and employee. His passion for the school and its mission has been evident in every role he has undertaken.
“The sisters, teachers, and coaches supported my life trajectory, which was initially set by my parents,” Krydynski recalls. “They tested my experiences as a middle-class, Midwestern, Catholic kid from Lansing and asked me to look at the world through different lenses—to see God’s love in others and to be God’s love for them. After they gave me all they could (or all I was willing to accept), they sent me into the world and challenged me to become a better version of myself.” That challenge was one Vince embraced wholeheartedly.
After graduating from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and The John Marshall Law School, he furthered his commitment to education by earning a master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Mary’s. His bond with Marian Catholic deepened when he joined the Alumni Association Board, later serving on the Lay Advisory Board from 2004 to 2009. He continued his service on the Board of Directors until 2013 when he answered a new call—to become Vice President of Institutional Advancement. That same year, he was inducted into the Marian Catholic Hall of Fame as Alumnus of the Year, a testament to his steadfast dedication to the school’s success and longevity.
In June 2016, Krydynski was honored to become the first lay President of Marian Catholic, a position he has held with humility, loyalty, and an unrelenting drive to uphold the school’s mission as a Catholic and Dominican institution.
“I was grateful and a bit overwhelmed when I was received as the President of the place that had shaped me so deeply,” Krydynski
shares. “After serving approximately 40 years, I am proud of what we have accomplished, especially in these last seven years as President. Every achievement is a story of perseverance, occasional missteps, and the unwavering support of so many who share in the vision and mission. Marian Catholic has been blessed, and continues to be blessed, with dedicated, passionate, and skilled faculty, staff, and administrators. It is not a perfect place, but it is a beautiful place. I believe our school is the handiwork of the Holy Spirit. I have loved this school since the first time I walked through its halls. I love the people who devote their lives to our students. I love the families who trust us with their children. I love our alumni and donors who support us so that we may continue to impact young lives now and for generations to come. Serving Marian Catholic has been one of my greatest joys.”
Under Krydynski’s leadership, the school has experienced significant growth in key areas. His vision and stewardship have brought financial stability, enhanced employee benefits, facility improvements, and program expansions. He guided the school through the challenges of COVID-19, prioritized safety and security, and fostered partnerships that have distinguished Marian Catholic from other institutions. Yet, at the heart of his leadership has been his commitment to ensuring the Dominican Charism and the four Dominican Pillars of Prayer, Study, Community, and Preaching remain the foundation of a Marian Catholic education.
Reflecting on his journey, Krydynski shares, “When I walked these halls as a student, it never occurred to me that I would return. I believe that each of us has been called to serve at Marian Catholic for a particular reason and for a particular time.”
We express our profound gratitude for Vince Krydynski’s service and leadership to Marian Catholic. His legacy will live on in the lives he has touched, the traditions he has upheld, and the future he has helped to shape. Thank you, Vince, for answering the call, for leading with faith, and for your devotion to Marian Catholic.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
Dr. Siegert’s path in life began with a solid foundation in Catholic education, starting at St. Agnes School before he joined the Marian Catholic community. Raised in a family that prayed the Rosary every night, Dr. Siegert’s mother hoped he would one day become a priest. He was destined to take a different route however, one that led him to a career in medicine.
Dr. Siegert excelled at Marian Catholic, taking on significant leadership roles as a Kairos leader, a leader on the football team, and a member of student government; all experiences that prepared him for his future career. In high school, Dr. Siegert volunteered at Franciscan Health as a participant in the Discovery in Service program led by Mr. Jack Heneghan. It was through these formative experiences that Dr. Siegert first recognized the importance of service to others, a value that continues to guide him today.
Dr. Siegert pursued his undergraduate degree at Loyola University Chicago before attending Midwestern University/ Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine for his medical education. A chance meeting with Dr. Anthony Grimaldi during his residency rotation solidified his desire to specialize in urology. The bond they formed over their hometown, Italian heritage, and shared experiences at Marian Catholic led Dr. Siegert to choose the same challenging field. Dr. Grimaldi sent his own children to Marian Catholic, and trusted the rigorous education the school provided. It had made a lasting impression on him.
Dr. Siegert currently serves as Clinical Associate Professor and Division Chief of Urology at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields where he has been on staff since 2015. Once the youngest Urology Residency Program Director in the country, Dr. Siegert takes immense pride in teaching his residents not only the technical skills of surgery, but also the importance of empathetic, respectful, and compassionate patient care. These qualities were instilled in him from a young age by his family and continued as a student at Marian Catholic. Dr. Siegert’s dedication to education is evident as he passionately engages with his residents, eager to see them take the lessons learned into their communities and hospitals. His commitment extends beyond his immediate responsibilities; he actively participates in community service and leadership roles within professional organizations, including the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.
But beyond the accomplishments within his profession, Dr. Siegert’s life is also a testament to resilience and community. Having faced significant challenges growing up, including the loss of his father and sister, he draws inspiration from the support of his family and the Chicago Heights community. His mother’s unwavering dedication— working three jobs while pursuing her own higher education—has left an indelible mark on his values and desire to give back to a community that Dr. Siegert feels forever indebted to. During one of the most vulnerable times in his life, entering Marian Catholic after the loss of his father, Dr. Siegert found strength and guidance in the mentorship of individuals who helped shape his path. He credits Mr. Jack Heneghan, Coaches Dave Mattio '66, Tim Swanson '86, and Tom West '77 for stepping in and providing the support, structure, and encouragement he needed to navigate that difficult time. Their wisdom and leadership not only helped him find his footing, but also instilled in him a sense of perseverance and determination that carried him through his academic and professional endeavors.
Dr. Siegert is a devoted family man, residing in Elmhurst, Illinois with his wife Michelle and their two children, James and Siena. Despite his busy schedule, he prioritizes quality time with his family, ensuring that his presence is felt both at home and in the community. Dr. Siegert acknowledges his wife’s unwavering support, knowing that her love, sacrifice, and tireless efforts are the
DR. JAMES SIEGERT '01, DO, FACOS
foundation that allows him to pursue his passion for medicine. She is not just his partner, but his greatest source of strength, ensuring that while he cares for patients, their family remains nurtured, supported, and thriving. Their children are active in academics and athletics, embodying the same drive and dedication their father demonstrates in his medical career. Dr. Siegert’s strong family values shine through in everything he does, from coaching James’s football and Siena’s softball teams to engaging in weekend family outings. Whether it’s enjoying a round of golf, preparing meals for his family, or offering mentorship to young medical professionals, he finds joy
in balancing his professional excellence with personal fulfillment. He embodies the spirit of Marian Catholic, weaving together community, family, and passion into everything he does.
Dr. Siegert’s selection as Alumnus of the Year reflects not only his distinguished accomplishments but also the honor he brings to Marian Catholic High School. His journey is a shining example of how the values instilled during students’ formative years can foster remarkable achievements and a lifelong commitment to service. We are proud to recognize Dr. Siegert as the 2025 Alumnus of the Year and and look forward to celebrating his continued engagement with Marian Catholic.
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
A standout on the football field, Andy Gasbarro’s incredible achievements during high school and beyond have earned him a well-deserved place among the school’s all-time greats and this year’s Athlete of the Year Award. Born in Chicago Heights and raised in Olympia Fields, Andy attended Infant Jesus of Prague in Flossmoor. His passion for football began in fourth grade as a running back, inspired by his father, Dr. Armand Gasbarro, a Chicago Bears season ticket holder. A cherished memory from 1985 was when his dad loaded the family into a Winnebago to see the Bears play in New Orleans for the Super Bowl. Andy got to watch his favorite player, Walter Payton (#34), and later wore the
same number throughout his football career, paying tribute to the player who inspired him and deepening his love for the game.
Andy’s journey with Marian began in 1978 thanks to his sister Cathy (Gasbarro '82) Del Olmo, a cheerleader for the school. While Cathy cheered on the Spartans, Andy watched the football games, sparking his early connection to the school’s football program.
During his time as a student-athlete, Andy concentrated on football, though he also briefly participated in basketball and baseball during his freshman and sophomore years. Under the mentorship of legendary coach Dave Mattio '66, he excelled as a running back. Initially opting to stay with the sophomore team to play alongside friends, Andy was brought up to varsity mid-season, where he joined his older brother Armie Gasbarro '85.
As part of the Spartan football program, Andy and his teammates accomplished feats that remain etched in Marian’s history. In 1986, the team defeated rival Joliet Catholic Academy twice, including a playoff victory—a first for the school. That season, the Spartans finished with a 10-3 record, advanced to the state semifinals, and set a program
benchmark with seven shutouts, a record that still stands today.
Individually, Andy’s 1986 season was exceptional. He rushed for 1,685 yards and scored 22 touchdowns, setting multiple records along the way. His accomplishments included the state record for most carries in a season (376) and the Class 5A record for most carries in a playoff game. These performances earned him All-State recognition from the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and Champaign News-Gazette along with other publications.
As a 7th and 8th grader, Andy had the unique opportunity to train alongside his brother Armie and Armie’s Marian football teammates. With Marian lacking a weight room in 1982 and 1983, they worked out at “The Gym” in Chicago Heights. These early training sessions helped Andy develop a solid strength foundation at a young age, complementing his natural agility and speed. Andy’s physical strength quickly became extraordinary. While still at Marian, he was bench-pressing an impressive 450 pounds. His strength grew at Purdue, where he reached an astonishing 525-pound bench press, setting a record that stood as the highest in the Big Ten Conference in 1990.
Andy continued his football journey at Purdue University, where he played for four years and earned varsity letters in two seasons. Renowned for his leadership on special teams, he led special teams in tackles and was honored with two MVP game balls. Among the highlights of his college career was a historic victory over Ohio State University on their home turf, a feat that remains a rare achievement for Purdue. Another memorable moment was when Andy had the opportunity to play against Notre Dame at Notre Dame Stadium in front of his family and friends. The Fighting Irish went on to become national champions that season, which made the experience even more special. It was incredible to compete against a team of that caliber and challenge himself against a championship-level squad.
Following his time on the field, Andy devoted 30 years of service to his community, recently retiring from the
ANDY GASBARRO '87
Secretary of State office in Chicago Heights. Reflecting on his alma mater’s impact on his life, he is proud to reconnect with the school that laid the foundation for his success.
Andy credits his achievements to the unwavering support of his father, Dr. Armand Gasbarro, who remained his greatest champion until his passing in 2019. He also shares immense gratitude for his wife, Dawn (DeLuca '86), whom he met in 1990. Together, they have
built a loving family with three children: Andy Jr. '13, Nicky, an all-state wrestler who received a scholarship to wrestle at The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Celia.
Andy Gasbarro represents the dedication, resilience, and character that Marian Catholic holds dear. His induction as Athlete of the Year honors not only his extraordinary accomplishments but also his enduring legacy as a Spartan.
The Spirit of Marian Award is presented to a special member of the Marian Catholic community who exemplifies the Dominican tradition of unselfish service to others and has made an outstanding contribution to the school, their community, or the Church.
In 2014, members of the classes of 1994 and 1995 gathered in support of their friend and fellow Spartan, Rebecca Eaton Lopez '95 who was fighting a fierce battle with metastatic breast cancer. Proceeds from their initial fundraising event, a nine-hole golf tournament, were shared with Becky’s husband and son as Becky sadly lost her battle just a few months before the outing. Since then, an annual
golf tournament, 5K runs, bowling bashes, and volleyball games have enabled Becky’s Warriors to continue to honor their friend and classmate by granting over $214,000 to nearly 50 Marian Catholic families; $121,000 of which has been in the form of tuition assistance. Their efforts reflect not only Becky’s spirit, but the spirit of Marian Catholic.
Those who knew her best describe Becky as friendly, kind, outgoing, quickwitted, and full of love. Her desire to help others was apparent in her chosen career as a special education teacher. The founders of Becky’s Warriors, all Marian Catholic alumni and lifelong friends, were determined to keep her legacy alive.
Collectively, the group realized they wouldn’t be who they are, and where they are in life, without their connection to the school. The decision to help Marian Catholic families battling cancer became a meaningful way for them to honor Becky and her values: sympathetic, pragmatic, selfless, a sense of fun, and determined. Today, those are the core values of the organization.
Becky’s Warriors board members, who are all volunteers, are passionate about the work they do; each of them has been impacted by a cancer story whether personally, or through a friend or family member. Their mission is to help those currently fighting a cancer battle by relieving some of the burdens they face and enable them to focus on their health. The approach is a holistic one, specifically designed for each person and their individual situation. For some, it may mean paying for their insurance or covering their mortgage for a couple of months. For others, it may be a care package, or gas cards for transportation to and from treatments. And, in some cases, it’s paying a student’s tuition so they can remain at Marian Catholic, something Becky would have been especially proud of as an educator.
The support isn’t just financial, however. Prayers and Swears, a saying Becky came up with, allowed individuals following her story to express their thoughts and feelings about her journey. Becky’s Warriors now invites others to share their cancer stories, so the group can pray for them, or swear with them, whatever they may need. Most of all, Becky’s Warriors wants them to know that they are not alone in their fight.
Early on, the vision of Becky’s Warriors was to do as much as they could for Marian Catholic families with as much as they had. The board continues to set goals to grow the organization and reach more people. “To get to be a part of something where you get to know these people and love them and know their story; that’s the part of Becky’s Warriors that keeps us all in the organization.” Becky’s spirit and the Spirit of Marian Catholic lives on through each one of them.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
Ron Guagenti is a storyteller. Spend time with him and you will hear stories about his family, his experiences as an athlete and coach, and his career in education. They are stories of a life well lived and clearly deserving of Marian Catholic’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Born and raised in an Italian Catholic family, Ron’s story began on the northwest side of Chicago. He attended Locke Elementary School and Steinmetz High School where he was part of an accelerated program focused on science and math. Ron then went on to Southern Illinois University where he played baseball and majored in biology and chemistry with the intention of going to dental school. He gave up playing baseball his junior year to study for the dental admission test, and was accepted to Northwestern. After much self-reflection, however, Ron chose to become an educator, a decision that ultimately benefited countless students.
Ron’s interest in sports was inspired by his father, a talented basketball and baseball player who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Unfortunately, Ron’s dad shattered his knee during maneuvers in WWII, ending his baseball career. Ron himself played baseball, football, and basketball all through high school and was on the swim team his senior year. He will tell you that as a child, his mother and grandparents wanted him to take accordion lessons. After all, first borns in an Italian family were supposed to be a doctor, a priest, or an accordion player! Little did they know that Ron would put
his spikes and glove in the accordion box and go to the park and play baseball. When eventually confronted about what he was doing, Ron told them, “Going to Little League. I’m not doing this accordion stuff.”
Ron’s first teaching and coaching position was at Sunnyside High School in Tuscon, Arizona. It was the beginning of a 53-year career that included 11 years at Rich East High School before Dave Mattio '66 lured him to Marian Catholic. Ron was already familiar with Marian as his wife, Barb, who he met at SIU, was a member of the Class of 1964; one of his first meetings with his future in-laws was at a Marian basketball game! Ron will tell you that his best coaching years were with Dave Mattio. His coaching success is evident given an 85-49 record in baseball including three Regional Championships and three Elite 8 appearances. Perhaps even more impressive are the achievements of his football teams: 20 IHSA Playoff appearances, two appearances in the IHSA State championship game, a State Championship in 1993; two Prep Bowl appearances, and one Prep Bowl Championship in 2000. Along the way, Ron designed and supervised the construction of Marian’s first home baseball complex, published several articles on football and baseball strategies and techniques, served as a clinician at state, national, and international workshops, and was a part-time scout for the Montreal Expos. In recognition of his contributions, Ron was inducted into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990, the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2009, named as AFLAC Insurance’s National Football Association’s Coach of the Year in 2002, and inducted into the East Suburban Catholic Conferences Hall of Fame in 2003.
Ron’s impact at Marian Catholic extended into the classroom as well. As a biology, chemistry, and environmental science teacher, he taught his students what is known as the “OK5R” method of reading science to increase their
comprehension. In collaboration with science teacher Barb Murzyn, Ron provided students with engaging experiences to complement their in-class learning including structured field trips and participation in Disney’s Youth Education Series at Disney World. Along with fellow biology teacher Carolyn (Bonvissuto) McCaughey, Ron was selected by both the Chicago Public Schools and the Archdiocese to represent all of the Catholic high schools in Chicago in the development of a technology-based, freshman biology course. Funded by IBM and Apple, the program was intended to provide teachers with innovative tools to enhance student learning.
Now retired, Ron lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife Barbara; they will celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary in August. His three children, Michael '87, Kari '89, and Gina '90 are all Marian Catholic graduates. Another Marian Catholic alumnus is part of Ron’s extended family as well; Alswinn Kieboom '83, who Ron met in Holland while coaching international USA baseball teams. Alswinn returned with Ron to attend school in America and found a home with the Guagentis. Although Ron’s days playing and coaching high-level competitive senior softball ended with a complete ankle replacement, he and his wife continue to enjoy bicycling, golfing, swimming, and traveling, including a memorable trip to the Bahamas with the entire family for their 50th wedding anniversary.
As a teacher and coach at Marian Catholic, Ron inspired innumerable young people, many of whom still call, text, and email him. The message he shares with them is a reflection of the ethics and morals instilled in him by his parents and grandparents: “Whatever you are going to do, or are assigned to do, do it to the best of your ability.” Ron obviously took those words to heart. We are all grateful for his immeasurable contributions to Marian Catholic High School and are honored to award him with the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT 2015
Ibrahim '15 and Amir '17 Ghazaleh
Brothers Ibrahim and Amir Ghazaleh have forged remarkable paths that exemplify the values they embraced during their years at Marian Catholic. Each has embarked on a career that reflects dedication, leadership, and a commitment to service.
Ibrahim Ghazaleh '15
After graduating in 2015, Ibrahim attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning his degree in 2019. Shortly thereafter, he was commissioned into the Marine Corps. His experiences have taken him across the globe. Currently, Ibrahim serves as a Captain and MQ-9 Reaper pilot and instructor in New Mexico. As he prepares to get married later this year and start a family, he reflects on the blessings and adventures of life after Marian. Ibrahim credits his choice to attend Marian Catholic to his family’s values, emphasizing the importance of a solid education, Catholic morals, and a community focused on personal and academic development. His time at Marian was integral in shaping the individual he is today. He fondly remembers being deeply involved in the tennis team and Model United Nations, appreciating the close-knit community fostered by his coaches and teammates. The leadership principles he learned at Marian have been instrumental in his role as an officer in the Marine Corps. Reflecting on his accomplishments, his pride lies in commissioning as a United States Marine Corps Officer, a goal he attributes to the guidance and mentorship he received during his high school days. “Be willing to learn from challenging experiences,” he advises current students, urging them to strive for self-improvement and embrace a life dedicated to a purpose greater than themselves.
Amir Ghazaleh '17
Amir’s journey at Marian Catholic began two years after his brother’s. Following graduation in 2017, Amir earned his bachelor’s degree in Global Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After working in the non-profit educational sector for a few years, Amir transitioned into a career in federal law enforcement. In September 2024, he became a Special Agent with the Diplomatic Security Service at the U.S. Department of State where he is currently stationed at the Chicago Field Office. With plans for a second tour in
Washington D.C. or even overseas, Amir has already participated in protection details across multiple locations, enhancing U.S. security both domestically and abroad. His time at Marian Catholic fostered the critical thinking and communication skills he applies in his current role. Amir’s fondest memories from high school center around the band program, where he served as Band President. He recalls traveling for performances and creating lasting bonds with his peers, emphasizing the band’s motto of “Personal Responsibility in Daily Effort” (P.R.I.D.E.) as a motivation that continues to drive him today. His advice to current students is to remain open to new experiences and potential career shifts. Given the challenges he faced in finding a job during the pandemic, he learned the importance of exploration and networking.
Together, Ibrahim and Amir embody the spirit of Marian Catholic High School, carrying the values of leadership, service, and resilience into their professional lives. Both brothers remain in touch with their classmates and continue to appreciate the friendships and lessons fostered during their high school years. As they look ahead, Ibrahim and Amir’s stories inspire not only their peers but also the next generation of students. Their journeys remind us that the foundation built at Marian can lead to extraordinary accomplishments and a life dedicated to making a positive impact in the world.

YEAR IN REVIEW
Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.”
–Kathy Calvin, American businesswoman and philanthropist
Dear Friends and Fellow Spartans,
The pillars of Dominican life are rooted not just in the school, but in Marian Catholic students themselves. Whether it’s through worship at school liturgies, excelling in the classroom, or performing acts of service throughout the community, Marian Catholic students exhibit leadership, respect, ambition, and thoughtfulness in all that they do.
The faculty and staff help foster the individual gifts and talents of all students so that they may go on to contribute to a just and dynamic society.
Your support helps bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of educating a student at Marian Catholic. Like so many other Catholic high schools, Marian relies on the continued generosity of stakeholders like you to help maximize every student’s potential, every day. The support you have shown is a testament to your belief in the Dominican community and mission at Marian. With the majority of students receiving some form of financial assistance, your attendance and participation at fundraising events such as Veritas, the Endowment Golf Classic, and so many others helps ensure these students have the means of achieving their goals here at Marian and wherever they may go.
As we look ahead to the 2025-26 school year, I am inspired and excited by the new freshmen, returning upperclassmen, the committed faculty, and you, Marian Catholic donors. Your passion and continued commitment to Marian’s mission through your investment in the school helps ensure students can continue to receive over $2 million in financial aid awards each and every year. We are excited to share with you the amazing achievements of Marian Catholic students as you will see throughout this entire edition of Marian Matters.
On behalf of Marian Catholic’s Board of Directors, I thank you for your continued partnership as we focus on the strategic vision for the future of Marian.
With sincere gratitude,
