INTRODUCTION The present thesis analyses two modern baths, in comparison with three parameters: water, light and sound. The modern baths, in question, are Les Bains des Docks, by architect Jean Nouvel, placed in the harbor of Havre in France and Therme Vals in Switzerland, by Peter Zumthor. The purpose of this thesis is to look at the basic principles that compose the atmosphere inside a bath, to interrogate the way that all these elements are taken into consideration by the architect and to understand their effects on visitors psychology. More, it tries to demonstrate that handling these principles are beyond simply solving a plan or a form and to show that they are involved in a profound design.

THE PARAMETERS Water Water is one of the features creating space. It characterizes and determines the use of the bath, more than anything else. Its handling defines the formation and the design of the internal spaces. If water did not exist, the meaning of these spaces would be lost. The way that the architect uses water, results in designing diverse watery conditions and consequently in the appearance of several internal situations. Light According to Peter Zumthor, the building is designed as a pure mass of shadows. Then light, as a unique mass, diffuses into it, penetrating the darkness. The effects of light, as it comes into space, enable the reader to recapitulate what really matters inside the building. The alteration of warm and cold light and the dancing of shadows affect the visitor’s perception about the form, the materials and the colors of the building. All these variations, eventually, shape the visitor’s emotions.

Sound Sound, as an element, revives the internal space. It is created by the interplay between people, who use the space and space itself. Peter Zumthor, supports, that ‘Interiors are like large instruments, collecting sound, amplifying it, transmitting it elsewhere’. The way that the spaces are organized and the materials are chosen, controls the sounds that are created, producing different experiences. The sounds of people acting, speaking, shouting and laughing are amplified in these public spaces. Considering that these places emphasize the mental purification and the decongestion of stress, the precise design of sound is a prerequisite for successful operation.

CONCLUSION These modern baths present two different techniques in their design, according to the analyses in three parameters, which were mentioned above. An exchange between the visitor and the buildings is created, in both of them. The atmosphere of the space communicates with the user and his existence, boosting and livening the interior. Everything that exist inside the building: the objects, the people, the air, the smells, the sounds, the colors, the materials, the temperature, the textures, the light and the water, shape a unique atmosphere that interacts with the emotions and the psychology of the visitor. The buildings are designed for this purpose. The different perception of the internal space and the ‘seduction’ of the people depend on how successfully these buildings can serve this purpose.

WINERY IN SANTORINI WITH GUEST HOUSES

T.PAPAIOANNOU DATE OF PRESENTATION: 18 JULY 2012 RESEARCH PROJECT The subject of this thesis is the design of a winery in Santorini, where guests are given the opportunity of observing the production process. Limited guest houses in the landscape add the option of a stronger connection with the enviroment and the vines. The winery is located in the largest agricultural part of Santorini. The main objectives of the study are the strenghtening of vineyards in order to recover the wine production on the island, and the boost of tourism through a common pathway which can be beneficial.

The central idea is to develop a strictly linear path that starts from the edge of the upper level of the landscape, continues across it, enters the earth and from within the lower level continues to the guest houses. The biggest part of the building is inside the earth. This design allows for preservation of the natural landscape. The height difference between the two levels of the landscape is crucial as it allows the downward natural flow of wine. Moreover, the internal structure of the building, is designed in such a way as to create a visual and audio contact. Extra ventilation and lighting inside the building is ensured with the use of skylights.

picture 5: the construction of the building seperates in two stages. the first, is the excavation of the biggest part of the project and the replacing of the soil, after. The second one, the lowest level, is formed as the tranditional houses in Caldera of Santorini, which are ‘perched’ on the rocky cliffs. the soil is subtracted horizontal. Then, the two spaces are connected. 5

The project is placed in Plaka, the old city, below the rock of Acropolis. It is a space for artists and researchers, where they can develop their ideas and promote them in a hall, inside the center.

The concept of this project is the direct contact of the laboratories with the outdoor space, in order the teams to make use of it. Thus, the more public spaces are risen high, due to the view to Acropolis. The main element in this composition is a stairwell, placed, almost, in the center of the plot. It links the different levels from the two volumes of the building. An axis passes through the plot, connects the two roads that confine it, creating two entrances. picture 4: north facade

There are, roughly, two basic levels. The first level consists of the laboratories that are placed bilateral of the outdoor space. In the same level there is a waiting room, where someone can be informed about the activities. All these are in street level. The second part contains a two-level hall for the presentation of the ideas and a cafÊ. The openings in the facades are according to the orientation of the building. In the South there are more openings in correlation with the North façade.

THEATER, MUSIC AND DANCE CENTER IN OMONOIA

ACADEMIC ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2010

SUPERVISOR: PROF. LIAKATAS - PECHLIVANIDOU STUDIO 7|N.T.U.A COLLABORATION:ARTEMIS PEFANI

This project deals with a site located in the center of Athens and particularly near Omonoia square. The site is a former shopping center, which is now closed. It is asked to design a new building from the start and to define a use for it.

The main concern of the project is to revive this blighted area through a number of activities that could be absorbing for the pedestrians. As a result, a theater, music and dance center, where people can take part in groups and learn, is created. Furthermore the center includes a concert hall for the presentation of these activities

The project tries to adjust the existing conditions of the area. The main part of the building, is placed in the main street. The height of the building follows the height of the other blocks, preserving the remaining and continuous face of the street, filling the gap. The concept of this project is to create a building in levels that host the activities that are mentioned before. Each floor has a unique use. The last two floors contain the concert hall and the foyer, which are visible from the street. picture 1: east facade of building picture 2: cross-section

On the other side of the plot there is only the volume that includes the dance activities. This side is almost unbuilt. A cafĂŠ and a library are found in a lower level. These spaces are accessible through a small in size square, behind the main volume of the building. The roof of the library is in the level of the road, producing a public zone for pedestrian precinct. The hall and the foyer, in the upper levels of the center, are visible due to their forms. The compact volume of the hall is in contrast with the transparency of the foyer. A balcony in the same level, is used as an extension of the cafĂŠ built inside. The shape of the hall reveals the function of it, as the form follows the slope of the seats of the concert hall. A stairwell is placed between the main volume and the volume of dance activities, in order to distribute the movements in different levels.

A COMMERCIAL AXIS_ CONNECTION OF TWO SQUARES INTERFERENCE IN KOUMOUNDOUROY SQUARE ACADEMIC ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2010 SUPERVISOR: PROF. A.KOURKOULAS STUDIO 9|N.T.U.A COLLABORATION:ARTEMIS PEFANI

This project refers to the creation of a commercial axis, in the center of Athens, which will connect two of the main streets of the city, Peiraios and Stadiou. The ends of this axis are two substantial squares: Koumoundourou and Klathmonos square. The idea of the commercial axis is based not only on the exchanging commodities that exist in the area, but also on the two important food markets (the vegetable and meat market) that are located there too. The commercial, pedestrian street crosses six blocks and connects two squares. In some part the route has already been constructed, and in other blocks, it is extended through them. The entrances from Peiraios street and from Stadiou street as well as the square that hosts the vegetable market and the meet market are redisigned and some of the blocks are expropriated.

While working on this concept, the influence of the irregular shapes of the open spaces inside the blocks, determined the idea. These shapes could be described as an ‘eating’, a gap inside a compact block. The idea of the ‘eating’ is also repeated in the section through the form of the arcade. pictures above: the existing commercial character of the area picture below: it shows the commercial axis, that is designed and the diversity of sections in different sites of the axis.

INTERFERENCE IN KOUMOUNDOUROU SQUARE The area, that is chosen for a precise planning, is the entrance from Peiraios street. Koumoundourou square is joined with the northern block, which is connected with the commercial axis and it is demolished. The end of this route is a platform that consists of the square and the previous block and it has the same direction with Peiraios street. Below the surface of this platform there are the right conditions for the existence of commercial activities. Moreover, two narrow buildings are designed, being parallel with Peiraios street. The first building, a public library, is placed on the street and the second one is situated opposite the other and it is a complex of apartments.

LARISSIS STATION GRUPPO: ANDREA SCIASCIA, VALTER TRONCHIN _ PALERMO VENICE The city of Athens raises to the north of the Acropolis in a vast plain of the Attica peninsula, dotted with low hills and surrounded by mountains, unfolding to the south towards the sea. Seven sites have been chosen for the purposes of this workshop, located between the ancient and the 19th century areas of the city center. These sites, have diverse characteristics due to their location, ranging from residual areas within the consolidated urban fabric, to areas in direct relation with the geological formation in the center of the urban environment of the city. picture picture

LARISSIS STATION_

‘from void to space’

This project examines the site of the railway station of Peloponisos, which is in the west side of Omonoia square. Nowadays, the station has turned out to be a ‘wound’ for the urban cohesion. This station is a boundary between the two existing neighborhoods. These areas, in the east and in the west, have a difference in height level, which strengthens the discontinuation of the city. The two sites are connected by an overpass, which takes upon itself the everyday flow of the pedestrians. picture picture

The three proposals for the project are linked with three diverse artists, Carla Accardi (picture 1_a), Giorgio de chirico (picture 2_b), Lucio Fontano (picture 3_c)

The first attempts to fill the gap by ‘sewing’. Different platforms, in diverse levels begin from one side or from the other, trying to connect the two areas. Below them, the operation of the railway continues to exist. The second solution consists of a huge platform, all in the same height. Above it, there is a composition of figures that contain different uses, commercial or cultural. These forms are geometrical shapes that are placed in this platform, such as shapes in abstract art. The last proposal forms a landscape that is created by a curve, parallel in the main axis of the railway station, seems like a crevice in the land.
