By looking at these examples, it is clear that a big way marketing illustration can be used is through website design. I can look at these companies as possible companies to reach out to or apply to as an inhouse illustrator.

In these kind of commissions it is important that you can convey BRAND IDENTITY, and so it is also important that I show examples of this in my portfolio.

By looking at these companies, it seems clear that illustrations are usually used to reinforce the HUMAN ASPECT of the companies, and so it is important that I can show that I can draw scenes with people in either my portfolio or website.

For these kind of roles I think it is important that I PRACTICE MORE SPOT I L L U S T R A T I O N - as these seem to work most with company websites.

Other than the actual artistic skills you need to be an illustrator, you need good communication skills in order to get projects done for either a client or a company. You will also need to communicate you ideas to directors you are working with or pitching ideas to. TIMEKEEPING AND O R G A N I S A T I O N skills are also important to have as you will need to keep on top of commissions and deadlines.

I need to consider all the different digital platforms I can utilise to sell myself as a brand and get commissions.

I will need to adapt my portfolio and CV for graphic design compared to illustration jobs, as I will need to prioritise different skills.

Illustration will often still be a part of graphic design roles, or atleast beneficial, and so it will be good to show my illustrations regardless in a graphic design portfolio.

It’s important that I showcase my ability to create and develop a full brand identity project, or promotional project, as graphic designers will usually be tasked with broad roles that span a much larger project than a typical illustration commission might. It will also be useful to develop my typography and typesetting skills. I have some examples of this already to back up my graphic design skills in a portfolio.

It will be crucial for me to stay up to date with all digital software, especially the adobe suite. However some companies may ask that you learn to use their specified software, and so I need to be able to learn new technology quickly.

There’s a lot of thought that goes behind the styling of each image and icon behind a brand design. This will also mean that graphic design requires less of a fixed/consistent style compared to illustration. This may be difficult to resolve within a single portfolio, and may require separate ones for each. I think the work I have produced so far definitely shows that I am able to work with a brief while maintaining ‘beauty’ and aesthetic in my final products.

CLIENT BRIEF EXAMPLES:

The conceptual approach to the brief, by building a story around the Samsung and Olympic collaboration, is something I always admire most about promotional campaigns, and so is something I could learn from in my career.

The illustration has a vector style, more suited to the graphic design of the rest of the campaign, which is definitely a style I can create and show in my portfolio.

NOTE: Most other campaigns, Agenda use more graphic and sleek styles, but this brief was fitting for a sketchy illustration combined with images as the aim was to attract kids and parents.

ANIMATION MADE FOR BOEING

W H AT I L I K E A B O U T T H E A G E N C Y : I really like that the agency apply clear creativity throughout each campaign, and have a refined sense of where to apply certain styles. I especially love the use of animation and video techniques to work within certain campaigns, all of which embody the identity of each brand. I also really like that the agency can bring certain companies to life with touches of humour, which make the agency feel like a friendly place I would want to work for.

INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION

DIPTYQUE French perfume and candle makers Diptyque asked me to create a colorful illustration for the 50th anniversary campaign.

Like Hos has done, I would also love to work with a perfume company, or luxury product company as these often require lavish and elegant looking drawings which is what I love to create and what I know I have a flare for. OTHER CLIENTS HOS HAS WORKED WITH: MIT Technology Magazine (Editorial) Merijn Hos works mostly as an illustrator but Down The Rabbit Hole Festival (Promotional) has eventually gone on to work as a ‘visual Nike (Nike Vapor Max animations) artist’ and art director. He is represented by the creative agency Hugo & Marie, Brummel Magazine (Editorial) working with clients of the calibre I would Calvin Klein (Summer 2016 campaign) love to eventually work with, having 15 The New York Times (Editorial) years industry experience.

ANIMATION: A big reason I find Hos an inspiration, is because he applies his illustration and style in multiple forms, such as these animations to celebrate the release of the new Nike Vapor Max. I also want to create a number of animations throughout my career, and find a path that would eventually allow me to explore other creative forms.

GRAPHIC DESIGN:

As my main career goal would be to work with promotional artwork, it is important for me to be able to work with graphic design aswell, such as designing for posters and social media content

JEE-OOK CHOI

Choi is my favourite artist in the industry at the moment as her style can be both atmospheric aswell as graphic driven , as she creates strong and beautiful scenes in her work. She also has a strong colour identity running through her work which I would also love to develop through my career. Like the other artists, she has worked with a range of clients that I would also love to work with. In particular, the posters she designed for the Bucheon film festival are my main inspiration for the work I want to have in my portfolio from my FMP, to showcase when applying for jobs. Her work for Peggy Gou is also reflects one of my long term career goals, which will be to work with a music artist that I love. CHOI’S

INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION

Like Ebsworth, I would also love to work with a start-up company, as getting to help design a brand from the ground up would give a lot of creative freedom to explore visuals and concepts. I think an Asian restaurant or dessert place with a similar playful identity would be my ideal client, as I like to create stylish and bright designs.

I love how Ebsworth works with colour and graphic shapes to create fun and playful illustrations. Her style works very well for Supa Ya Ramen and really draws you into the brand, making it seem fun and friendly. I would also love to work with an Asian restaurant, with Asian food being one of my favourite things to enjoy, and having an inclination towards Asian graphic styles.

The types of clients that Ebsworth has worked with are ones that I aspire to work with one day

These clients include: • Festivals, • Magazines (making editorial illustrations) • Radios/Podcasts

AGENCY I’D LIKE TO WORK WITH

WITHOUT

WHY WITHOUT • They work with brands that I love, and in the sectors that I’d love to work in, especially food and drink, and leisure. • A prime example of the branding that I love from them is their project with branding Wahaca, which is one of my favourite restaurants. • They are offering a design internship that I could gain a lot of industry experience from. • I love their company culture and the types of designs and projects they create, especially the modern look they give to brands. W H A T I C O U L D O F F E R : I think my style of working is very similar to the way they design at Without, modern and fun. So my ideas could contribute well to the types of clients and projects they work on.

Could include years of freelancing experience?

I need to emphasize my attention to detail not only in illustration but in GRAPHIC DESIGN Something I’ve had experience with previously: Manah Farm, Spitfire, Tiger Maduro, freelance commisions. Etc.

ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR ME AS AN ILLUSTRATOR + I’m well versed in all forms of illustration. Fits in with my work at the hotel

STUDIO I’D LIKE TO WORK WITH

STUDIO FRITH

WHY STUDIO FRITH • • •

I love the style of their designs, as they work in a sleek yet slightly retro graphic way. I have personal connections to Frith herself. Their client base is extremely broad and includes a lot of high end, and luxury brands which I would love to work with or gain experience in seeing how those projects are created.

TYPOGRAPHY will definitely be something I need to work on before applying to an internship, as this is highly important to graphic design, and the projects Studio Frith works on

The style that Studio Frith adopts is very much similar to my own personal preferences of style, and so I think I would be able to fit in with the work they create and their general design expectations from clients. The colours and muted tones they use are also what I like to work with in my pieces and designs, and so I think my portfolio could work for them, especially if I continue to develop the design projects I am currently working on, such as iSoju.

W H AT I O F F E R TO S T U D I O FRITH •

I love how Studio Frith thinks outside of the box when it comes to design. For example the crossing out, the reworking of shapes into text and exploratory typography is innovative and something I’d like to learn from, I think that I can also offer new ways of looking at design and type to the company, My own colour sensibilities and sense of style would definitely benefit the studio.

I think my own style is very suited for Studio Frith’s type, and calibre, of clients, in that I like to design in ways that I N D I E or A R T I S A N brands go for.

I will need to develop more of this work however before applying for an internship, in order to show them more specific pieces of work/specific abilities,

P I N AT E X A sustainable fabric company, making fake leather from pineapple leaves. I first heard about the company through their involvement in the same fashion awards as Studio Frith They use very muted colours and earthy tones, while putting an emphasis on the farming aspect of their company, which I would be able to use my work for Manah Farm as a selling point when looking to collaborate with them.

•

I personally feel drawn to Pinatex as a company as they grow their pineapple farms in the Philippines, and so I have a connection to their roots, and would love to convey an element of my culture in their company.

•

I think that while their overall look is very photographic and sleek, they could benefit from an illustrative style in their promotion or social media channels.

MAMASONS

I have always been drawn to working with Mamasons because they are possibly the most popular Filipino branch in England currently. Their bright pastel and playful aesthetic is very much a style I would like to work in, and I’d love to reach out to get a commission with them, whether it be a promotional piece or something for display.

The food industry in particular has always been a big goal of mine to work with, and my portfolio could demonstrate this well as I have worked with food topics quite a lot throughout university, and so I think I would be well versed for this.

Some of the illustrations Mamasons uses on their online menu.
