DISCOVERY Corporate Identity
The brief for this personal project was to design a logo and corporate identity. The ‘client’ was a biopharmaceutical research company called Discovery that specialises in immunology. Discovery conducts research in vaccines, inflammation and autoimmune diseases, respiratory diseases, cancer, diabetes and obesity. As the company is in the business of research, to find robust solutions to serious human health problems, the concept for the ID is a molecular structure being penetrated by a probe. To represent molecular structure I used three hexagons. A hexagon being the shape of the symbolism of the benzene molecule, a key component of many complex organic compounds. I wanted the probe to be striking so I based it on a flash of lightning. It passes through one of the hexagons and reappears from the back, an important image as it represents resolution, a pushing forward to find a cure.

ICONIC DESIGNS Design Systems
The objective for this project was to design icons that have the ability to work independently or as a system, and therefore relate to one another. The goal was to convey an action or Idea with a simple visual symbol as icons elegantly solve problems associated with global economies and language barriers. The communication objective behind my icons was for them to be used on websites, or in brochures, as navigational tools, to take readers to specific sections, e.g. clothing, weaponry and defence, equipment and animal handling. They have a meaningful relationship to one another in terms of subject matter and the design elements used to create them.

ANDY GODDARD Publicity Campaign
This project was a publicity campaign. I chose to design the campaign for my nephew, singer-songwriter, Andy Goddard, for a concert tour and CD launch. Andy is 24 years old and has style and personality. He has self-produced an EP of his own songs called The Shatter Maze, which I expanded on for the purposes of the project. It is available for download on iTunes and Amazon. His target audience is both male and female predominantly aged 16-30 and whilst he promotes himself by producing video clips on YouTube, a campaign using different methods can help to get his name recognised. The publicity is therefore two-fold. Firstly the campaign revolves around getting his name noticed by the public using various media methods. Secondly, it involves the merchandise itself, the CD and promotional items for sale at concerts.

MAGAZINE LAYOUT Ralph McTell interview
The brief for this layout project was to produce a 4-page magazine article. The text for the article was taken from a real interview I did with Ralph McTell. I wanted to demonstrate that Ralph has been on the music scene for a long time and that he is still writing and performing and is as busy now as ever at the age of 67. Far from being near retirement, he is still writing new material and making new albums. At the same time, however, at this point in his career, he is also producing retrospective collections. To continue this analogy I chose a mix of photographs, both recent and dating from 1965/1970. For the background colour to the page I chose a 10% tint of the colour used for the sub-headings etc., giving a visibly warm, comfortable look to the pages as if the reader is talking with an old friend. I chose a deliberately ambiguous title - New Roots - which helps to communicate that the article will be about Ralph’s new work but also a hint that his musical background and influences will be discussed and that maybe part of his plans are to either rerecord his own older material or the blues music of other writers. Either way the reader will know there is something new and fresh to look forward to. I expanded on the project to include the cover of a magazine that the article might appear in, which is predominantly about folk/folk rock musicians who have been in the business for some time but are still very successful today.

CARE & REPAIR Corporate Identity
This project was for client Care and Repair Enterprise Ltd, an independently-run company set up in March 2011 whose aim was to resolve housing problems to help people remain safe, secure, comfortable and independent in their own home. I was asked to design a logo and brand identity to reflect both housing and caring. I therefore used a caricature of an open hand gently holding a house. The name of the company was split and divided by a keyline. The company wanted the main name of Care and Repair to be easily legible. The colour palette represented skin and brick tones. A variation of the logo in yellow was used on the burgundy corporate clothing.

YES PASSPORT Employability skills training
A COGITO DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
GLOBAL YOUTH EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS
PASSPORT This passport has been developed by E Squared (Employability and Enterprise)
In 2012 my client, Cogito Development Projects, wanted to develop an online education tool called a Youth Employability Skills Passport or YES Passport. It needed to look like a real passport with a mock passport cover. The inner pages had to have a watermark and open so that users could add a ‘stamp’ as ‘evidence’ of a particular skill they have developed. It would be used initially with young people aged 14+ and then with school children aged 9-13 so a second version may be designed at a later date. It will sit on the Enterprise 360 website - www.enterprise360.me. A printed version is now in production.

MARIANNE JAMES Personal Identity
I describe a seahorse as gentle, placid, unassuming and dignified. It has determination and strength to survive. It has elegance and poise. It has a distinctive and characteristic equine body. These all reflect aspects of my personality that I want to communicate in my personal ID. I have therefore chosen a seahorse to represent me and be the icon for my professional personal identity. It is appropriate in that it reflects my strengths: a safe pair of hands, thoughtful, methodical, creative, talented, thorough, determined, honest. It is memorable, timeless, versatile and works across all media. The bubbles represent fun and my creative thoughts. The curly tail my tenacity. It is a recognisable and simple image to remember. The rich purple colour signifies quality and dignity. I have also chosen to keep to one colour to emphasise elegance and poise.

CLEMBROOK CRAFTS Magazine Advertisement
This project brief was to produce a full page colour magazine advert. My ‘client’ was Clembroook Crafts, the new company of a friend and for whom I had designed the logotype. I used two different concepts for the advert; a fine porcelain figurine, and a seasonal Christmas sugarcraft display. The advert was designed to feature in a glossy lifestyle or crafts magazine that is read at leisure and enjoyed. I expanded on the brief and designed magazine covers. The objective of the advert was to increase brand awareness and persuade consumers to buy products by Clembrook Crafts.

PARADIGM HOUSING GROUP In-house designs
As in-house designer for five years at Paradigm Housing Group I produced a number of brochures, leaflets, posters, flyers, calendar, invitations and branded merchandise, which conformed to the house style - a clean, crisp white background with different use of selected images on brochure and leaflet covers. Bliss 2 font used throughout with teal headlines. Occasionally I could be more creative and work outside the house style parameters to produce something a little different for particular campaigns, particularly for the Community Involvement Team. ‘Get Involved’ was in 50s pop art style; ‘Enhancing Communities’ was like a scrapbook; ‘Customer Care Standards’ was called ‘Revolving Around You’ and used the planets of the solar system.

INNER PEACE Corporate Identity and Packaging
This is a package design personal project for aromatherapy candles sold by ‘client’ Inner Peace, a scented candle company. The message is to convey to the customer that this is the product that offers a fulfilling experience by way of helping to soothe the inner self from the stresses of life. This is done by using exotic fragrances and pure ingredients. It is the product to allow a person to give themselves some individual quality time and to relax and enjoy it. The primary objectives of the project were to design recognisable and eye-catching packaging for aromatherapy candles that must convey quality and luxury and visually offer a promise of a calming, indulgent and fulfilling experience that may be beneficial to health and well-being. The packaging needs to connect with the customer and must evoke an emotional response.

REMI PHOTOGRAPHY Logotype
Client: Remi Photography Project: Logotype Concepts: Logotype design, typography Applications: Adobe Illustrator
Client Remi Benson asked me to design a logotype to get his name recognised. He is starting out as a professional photographer, specialising in weddings, christenings, portraits. The brief was to create something elegant for his name and use a complementary typeface for the strapline “Photography by Remi Benson”. A keyline then separated the two. Remi wanted to be able to use a full version but also a version with just the “signature”.
