"

The bridge swings over the stream "with ease and power". It does not just connect banks that are already there. The banks emerge as banks only as the bridge crosses the stream. The bridge designedly causes them to lie across from each other. It drongs stream and bank and land into each other`s neibourhood." Martin Heidegger

Memorial museum of victims of totalitarian regime Year: 2013 Type: Master`s degree final diploma Location: Bykivnja, Kyiv, Ukraine Title of the thesis: Architectural and planning concepts in museum complexes construction On the outskirts of Kiev, near Bykivnia village is Stalin era mass grave. After the war this place was planted with forest. During excavation two mass graves were found - one of repressed Ukrainians and other of Polish officers. Excavation continues by this day. There are plans to set up a museum dedicated to the history of USSR crimes against humanity. 4

The goal of this museum is not only to teach the history of such crimes, but also to honor the victims and remind everyone that no matter what, human life has the most important value.

During Ukraine`s independence, the question of evaluation of the actions of the Soviet government was not resolved. Many people still feel nostalgic about it, by either not knowing or ignoring many crimes that were committed by Soviet government.

But one who does not knows his past, can not understand the future. Places like Bykivnia must be acknowledged. With the help of architecture they can tell their story and hopefully prevent from same mistakes happening again.

Building itself is very different from other memorial structures in Ukraine – there’s no pathos to it, but instead it is humanistic. By association this museum stands somewhere in between traditional wooden church and biblical arc. Wooden structure forms a simple interior. Visitor enters museum by stepping

Museum is projected on the way from the main entrance towards the location of two burials. Visitor goes through it without coming back to the entrance.

He is engaged with information, passes it through himself and continues forward. Master plan scheme is based on visitor’s route path. It starts at the main entrance and leads to the museum where it stops by the ramp where ground level exposition begins. This path continues from the exit of museum. Outside the exit of the museum there is a long and narrow lake which reflects the forest trees. By the end of it, pathway spreads in two directions – to existing memorial and future burial place.

Vertical communication axes are grouped around the central atrium. Route through the museum starts on the ground level and finishes at the top of the building – an open terrace. Most of the utility rooms are situated on the ground level. Đ?ll of them have access to exposition areas on higher floors.

Contemporary dance theatre at Obolon waterfront in the sity of Kyiv Year: 2012 Type: Bachelor`s graduation project Location: Kyiv, Ukraine Obolon waterfront is located on the bank of the river Dnepr near Obolon housing estate in Kiev. View on river Dnipro makes this riverbank very attractive to developers of elite housing properties. Riverbank itself is wide enough to host variety activities – there can be a park or even a square with a theater. River Dnipro runs through the heart of the city and it would be great to see river transport running on it again, as it was 30 years ago. We made a decision to develop

14

four main functions of the area: piers for river transport (both public and private), contemporary dance theater with a square and recreational alley with sporting grounds and children play areas. Master plan axes are based upon main observational points while piers are located by the deepest areas of the river. This way the site holds up all sorts of activities yet living the existing park almost untouched.

he HOHM building is going to be situated in the inner part of the Budapest City Park, surrounded of hundred years old trees and with picturesque view on the Vajdahunyad Castle and the City Park Lake. Building’s site is also opened to the main historical axis, which is connecting the Memorial of 1956 with the building of the New National Gallery.

“Synaesthesia” ("union of the senses") – stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway "Chromesthesia"– connection of vision and hearing senses. Some of synaesthets resemble irregular three-dimensional geometric forms and shapes.

Main pedestrian way of the side connects the Park lake and the new Park’s General axis and at the same time ropes people into the building’s inner yard. On the ground floor HHM’s event hall could be opened to outside and provide summer stage, which is oriented to the Park lake.Footpath creates four public zones with necessary landscape and design elements and saved trees included into paved sites. The landscape around the House of Music is going to be natural: only footpath system and old park’s foliage.

Concept of the building’s structure is based on that ancient humans feature which came down to nowadays throw exceptional cases of synaesthesia.

Sound fills up any space. In HOMA one of the tasks is to create some kind of shell for sound. Different room shapes can provide different acoustic characteristics and place various scenarios. Using diverse configurations in the inner space we ensure huge amount of possible ways of exploitation exhibition’s area. 26

New spaces and stages are springing for expression the nature of sound as well as historical development of Hungarian music.

London Public Library Year: 2015 Type: Archmedium competition Location: London, UK Team: O.Penyaz, M.Pastukh In a modern world of increasing information availability, library as institution looses its practical meaning. Instead it increases its symbolic value. We think that a modern library has to become a kind of a temple where reason and intelligence defeats human ignorance. During Victorian period (a golden era for an English greenhouse) as wealthy upper classes and aspiring botanists competed to build the most 34

elaborate buildings, the largest to date glasshouses were built. As well as the libraries, conservatories were available only to the very few privileged members of the public. Library and a botanic garden. Two coexisting concepts that are juxtaposed together in order to create a sacred space for reading, thinking and learning.

35

C

ompact library building is situated between Tooley Street and London City Hall. It overlooks the river Thames and Tower Bridge. LPL is 25m in height, which is middle size in comparison to two neighboring buildings. The monolithic box character of the object allows it to blend-in with the pre-existing modern architecture, whereas its facade texture and window dynamic intentionally relate library building with a more traditional architecture across the street.

Impassive and peacefully placed in surrounding environment with a ground level segment cut out from the main structure to save existing walkway and green footprint of the Potters Fields Park. This area becomes attractive public space with accessible infrastructure and leads to main entrance.

Library zone itself is concentrated around bookshelves block. It serves as a storage space, vertical communication and forms a conceptual “heart of the library. Surrounded by atrium, it is visible in full height with daylight systems helping to light reading zone at all three levels. Bookshelves block leads visitors to reading zone. In it`s turn, reading zone has a diverse program-it serves a purpose of an open space, provides research rooms and also works as a meeting area.

Top level of the building represents a significant mixture of conservatory, reading zone and open space. Glasshouse-look dome provides a maximum level of insolation. It is crucially important for a garden and is extremely desirable for reading. Library takes up three floors that are connected together with an atrium, which opens the garden to visitors and brings daylight to lower levels.
