THE IDEA_
The design of a new assets for Mirabellplatz comes at first from ad idea of urban and social requalification on the platz, in order to give it an identity which is missing in the exhisting situation (today used as parking lot). This goal is acts in tree directions: 1. give an order to the existing weekly market, the Schrannenmarkt. 2. re-descover the identity of the market-platz by re-establish a public space, as dimension and as symbol of it. 3. create a visual connection with the Mirabell Gardens and expand this contact in all the platz as place close to the historical centre.
GEOMETRY_ The requalification of the platz starts from the design of a cover shape as symbol of public space and connection to the market (vi sual and mental connection). The light covered developed grows up with a precise geometry which come from the grid of the pillars of the parking downstairs. The design concept lets the lower bearing structure continue over the ground level becaming the main structure of the new built. Also the pavementation follow the geometry of the pillars’ grid.

STRUCTURE_ As light structure, the membrane is made by four hyper surface (hyperbolic paraboloid) which connect the two divided tissued roads and watchs into the Gardens. The tensile structure has less bearing supports that it can have, infact each struts solve the role of two, fixed in the bisector of the tens direction which came from the surface. The struts’ position generates the shape of the hyper and the precise geometry of the structure, which needs the inox iron AISI 316, 1.4401 level, for an high performance. The surface of the cover is tought to be almoust totally transparent, in order to became a filter between two different spaces, the streets and the platz. For this aim for the curtain is used Teflon PTFE which combine transparency and strenghtness as well.
MARKT_
Besides the social topic, the tensil structure helps also to riorganize the weekly market, divided in two parts, a permanent one and a weekly side as before. The market counts around 162 stands, which is now reduced to 150 walking stands and the rest are established in a new fixed market, which takes place under the tensile structure in a glass pavilion. This new calibrate building is made to give a stable symbol of the market in Mirabellplatz, offering a daily consum, of the Schrannenmarkt products. The glass pavilion hosts also new vertical connections to the parking lots, including a goods lift useable for the market.

The part of the pilgrim walk analized, which precede the city’s entrance, runs close to the main infrastructures and shows several upkeep problems, including lack of stability. The urban plan aims to reconnect the pilgrim walk, from the highway path to the entrance of the city thanks to a “parasitical” structure, in order to recreate a matarial as spiritual riconnection to the original walk.
The issue is solved by a steel structure, realized in three parts: working with anchored into the ground by concrete underground platforms, three
tensioned cables
parts of separate structures
guide the pelgrin to the next moment until the gate of the city. The three distinct structures take place in the three respective points in which there is a topografy’s decrease and the old pilgrim route was put too close to the highway. The bridges are made of prefabricated steel elements which runon the tensioned cable, like gems on a necklace, creating a floating walkway usable for pedestrians and bicycles’ ride. Designed with a particular attention to the section, the fragmented bridge is conceived as a continuous and rhythmic element which covers the north sight, to leave a panoramic view of the peaceful landscape in the south. Besides the bridges’ project, the plan considers the restoration of the area around the pilgrim walk: it includes the renovation of an old staircase and part of the exhisting walk, the restoration of the neighborhood after the “second bridge” with the creation of a new restaurant and free space for children. A new hill is also designed to substitute an old plain structure at the entrance of the city as symbol of holy gate.

Starting from remarking part of the first “Voyage d’Italie” of Le Corbusier, done in 1907, it was asked to design a holy space in a particul ar space throught the tuscany hills, just outside from Florence’s centre, set between two importan streets: Via Senese and Via del Podestà, wich surround and define the site. Square meters and pastoral rooms were fixed from the beginning by the atelier ’s professor. The aim of the project was to find a right way to establish a parish church complex, included a vicarage and a pastoral department, which could dialogue with the exhistence and answer to some of the site issues. The street is used as mistic symbol of purification and holy walk: the church complex starts from a secondary street, which born ortogonally from Via del Podestà and becomes the heart of the project. Following the hill’s slope by two staircases, the visitor discover the real dimension of the two buildings, where the first one grows up from the ground with a natural, whispered rise. The entire pastoral services are included in the first long building that follows the road’s direction and leave the visitors to the main square, the sagrato. Compos ed by two floors, the laical building creates a new urban facade, keeping all the room s leaning out to the new street.

The church’s inner space reflects the organization of the first building with a particular and intence treat of the light as leading marks of the space. The church’s facade reminds the front of an ancient temple, drived by the idea to mark the boundary of a new, sacred space; a part of this boundary is opened on the right to declare that the sagrato is also part of a holy space. The church orientation looks to the cloister and has the significate, as holy space, to be in contrast to the laical building with its ortogonal direction and different dimensions of lenght, width and height. The Sagrato square enters into the church drived by the light, supported by a similar typology of pavement’s material. The stone is the main character of the church building, while in the long building the new urban road facade is realised with fabrics; different materials are combined with similar colours which confer unity and armony to the project.

The competition asked to restore part of the exhisting hospital and to design a new urban planner for WeiĂ&#x;enau park which could c onnect all the exhisting buildings as part of the new clinic centre. After a long fase of the complex’s design (a colleague and I produced more than 15 proposals for thw new arrangment, included studying models), before arriving to a final shape of the structure, the final chosen was a balanced compromise between closed spaces and private gardens for the patiences. For the final competition drawings I cared of the masterplan, from the dwg drawing to the final photo-edit, and I worked on the layout of the tables, including diagrams and the photo-editing of the sections.

Shinohara’s concept of “space of use/no use ” has been proposed in a residential building in Pal ermo, Sicily. The space of no use is the heart of the building, a total high inner court which receive calibrated light from a fenditura long and thight split on the rooftop, around which it’s developed the walkways that connect the elevators to the apartments. The building consists of four floors, three of them cantilevered. The apartments are mainly duplex, some simplex and, at the top floor, two triplex. A system of private lodges brings more light in the living area of the apartments. As main material it’s been chosen white concrete to sign a continuity to the closer buildings’ idea and to fix a gap to the future in the same times. The inner space of the court, which create the private space of no use, as well as the basement are made in stone. In the first case the stone is used to create an intimate and atemporal atmosphere, in the second it’s been chosen for umidity and conservative issues.

(English translation) “Mendrisio, 26.07.2017 I present the architect Mariapia Colzani (09.11.1992), who graduated with me at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, Università della Svizzera Italiana, in date 24th June 2017. As degree’s professor and member of the Commission’s Examinations I have found that throughout her course of the studies, Mariapia has demonstrated abilities and attitudes to the study of architecture, combined with interest and attention to the urban aspect of an interdisciplinary relationship. She has deepened the structural and landscape aspects of the architectural set of her project. Mariapia has always been open to discussions, attentive, diligent, very thoughtful and with good conceptual reasoning and project settings, rigorous towards the teaching instructions. Concerning the degree’s work “Salzburg, In between memory and contemporaneity”, the project she propose is configured by the design of a lightweight steel structure supporting a hooked tent, which extends along the deeper side of the square, enclosing a space for market and services. Mariapia was always available for comparison, she showed her knowledge and interest in architecture and considered the topic as the art of a larger body that involved the whole void of the area in relation to the city. Structural choice, spatial research, technological aspect in using solutions suited to her project are interesting. I recommend the architect Colzani as reliable person, capable and organised, inclined to good collaborations. Best Regards, Mario Botta”
