DESCRIPTION The

Wonderer

is

a

boho

chic brand. Bohemians are creative misfits who live in the moment. To compliment the brand, elements of nature and industrial characteristics were incorporated to add attributes that the Bohemians

in an industrial space mixed with natural elements such as plants and sunlight. Her vision for the retail space also include the use of wood and exposed brick to further invoke the distinct style of her brand. 9

Roadside Settlement House Established in 1914, The Des Moines Roadside Settlement House offered social services to the lower-income community. With the growing changes from the past to the current times, the house closed due to the community no longer needing the services. The current owners desired to rehabilitate the building into two spaces comprised of a restaurant and a cafe. All work completed was done meeting the NPS standards for historic preservations. The date of significance was set to 1916. The final design took elements from the Georgian and Queen Anne style of the time with a touch of modernism.

SARASOTA LOFT CLIENT: Eluisa Liu is a museum director and modern artist with a love for contemporary trends. Her admiration for art led her to collect abstract artworks as a hobby. Eluisa desires a colorful home that compliments her interests and personality. She requires that her home be comfortable and accomodating to her disability needs.

DESCRIPTION: This residential loft space combines the contemporary aesthetic of industrialization and the tropical style in competence with ADA accessibility. With the ocean surrounding the city of Srasota, inspiration comes from the waves and the vastness of their expressions in shapes and direction. The expressions are translated to the spacial distribution where every corner creates a new experience. Direction is applied to the ceiling where exposed railings guide and distribute the seperation of space. The colors are abstracted from the gentle soothing hues of the ocean waters.

MORRIL CAFE DESCRIPTION The

inspiration

came

from

the

color, flow of patterns, and gradual movements

of

the

painting

Chalkzone by Helen Frankenthaler. The painting’s composition was first analyzed and examined in order for the elements to be seperated and extracted into free flowing shapes. The

shapes

were

then

united

together into an abstract model which incorporated visual appeal of organic lines with the simplicity of negative space. The energy and rhythm of model was then replicated into the creation of the cafe.

I included this project in my selected works because it was the first interior design project that I did as an undergrad. I am very thankful for it because of the lessons it taught me which ultimately helped shape me to be the person and designer that I am today.

The most challenging part of this project was building the model from scratch without the aid of laser cutters. It truly put my craft skills to the test and pushed me to try my best.

DESIGN DRIVERS During the first phase of the project, our class traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota to visit several design firms and coworking spaces in order to see what makes a workspace successful or not. After this, we were tasked with creating “design drivers,” or concepts of humanspace interaction that our team would use moving forward in our project design. Our team drew inspiration from an idea called design thinking that Tim Brown mentions in his book “Change by Design.” He explains that designers can use this way of thinking to move through three different phases, an idea we thought is applicable to how people use the College of Design. The phases are defined by three words: Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation.
