Roadside Settlement House Established in 1914, The Des Moines Roadside Settlement House offered social services to the lowerincome community. With the growing changes from the past to the current times, the house closed due to the community no longer needing the services. The current owners desired to rehabilitate the building into two spaces comprised of a restaurant and a cafe. All work completed was done meeting the NPS standards for historic preservations. The date of significance was set to 1916. The final design took elements from the Georgian and Queen Anne style of the time with a touch of modernism.

DESCRIPTION

The Wonderer is a boho chic brand by fashion designer Mackenzie Thacker. Bohemians are creative misfits who live in the moment. To compliment the brand, elements of nature and industrial characteristics were incorporated to add attributes that the Bohemians find intriguing. The interior captures the brand’s identity and translates the aesthetics of her designs to shape the retail space.

is a third year fashion design student at Iowa State University and concept creator of The Wanderer. Her desires are to exhibit her merchandise in an industrial space mixed with natural elements such as plants and sunlight. Her vision for the retail space also include the use of wood and exposed brick to further invoke the distinct style of her brand.

The main level features the cash wrap as the point of focus that costumers see upon entering. The merchandise is displayed in planks along the walls and a variety of different fixtures. I intended capture the free spirited scene that Bohemians are known for. For the design, I drew inspiration from natural elements.

SARASOTA LOFT CLIENT: Eluisa Liu is a museum director and modern artist with a love for contemporary trends. Her admiration for art led her to collect abstract artworks as a hobby. Eluisa desires a colorful home that compliments her interests and personality. She requires that her home be comfortable and accomodating to her disability needs.

ELUISA LIU DESCRIPTION:

This residential loft space combines the contemporary aesthetic of industrialization and the tropical style in competence with ADA accessibility. With the ocean surrounding the city of Srasota, inspiration comes from the waves and the vastness of their expressions in shapes and direction. The expressions are translated to the spacial distribution where every corner creates a new experience. Direction is applied to the ceiling where exposed railings guide and distribute the seperation of space. The colors are abstracted from the gentle soothing hues of the ocean waters.

LIVING ROOM The open space of the living room provides both wheelchair accessability and aesthetical contribution to the loft residence. Soft color variety add liveliness and wellbeing to the openness. The decor is kept to a minimum so that each of the individual pieces in the space stands out on its own without competing for attention. 20

A VISION OF CoD CONCEPT The College of Design is a home to students and faculty of all disciplines and backgrounds, and should provide for the needs and desires of this culture. Our goal is for students to experience the College of Design as a place of interlocking concepts, forms, and ideas that invoke collaboration and blend the design disciplines. Multi-functional work areas will allow students to work together both in and outside of the studio. A variation of zones and spaces within the

building will stimulate users and provide fresh inspiration for the design process. The integration of natural luxuries such as daylight will strengthen users’ health and wellbeing. These elements of collaboration, flexibility, and inspiration will remain with them beyond their experiences in the College of Design.
