IN COLLABORATION WITH CUMULUS ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

ROMANIAN PAVILION AT EXPO 2020 DUBAI C O M P E T I T I O N - Fi r s t p r i z e Romania’s presence at Expo 2020 Dubai aims to represent its values and performances, as a true creative and dynamic hub - an open space for innovation through collaboration. The hub connects Romania to the global culture by appealing to the dichotomy “nature - technology”. “New Nature” is not a theoretical or scienti c course, but it is about repositioning, assuming, relating to Nature. “New Nature” is a concept that seeks a new conscious balance between human and nature without excluding the forms of human manifestation or the economic and scienti c development, practically integrating them all into a new possible model.

The Romanian pavilion, a reminder of the symbols of Constantin Brâncusi, will be composed of four sections (semicircles) that symbolize a micro-Universe in which four pillars of Romania levitate: nature, tradition, education and technology. The shape of the pavilion seeks to relay the idea of a fragile balance, as an expression of a “no return point” in which Nature is currently, as a result of human activities. The pavilion sits on a water mirror, announcing the main natural element to be found inside. The access is protected by a high portico, between the ceramic slabs cover of the pavilion and the glass facade itself.

The interior is organized in a central public space, illuminated by a zenith opening across all the oors. The central screen bridges this gap, marking the verticality of the space and providing a background for both the scene and the cafeteria on the other side. The interior offers a re ned image, talking about balance and about the purity of nature and water. The nishes present in the layout are mainly natural nishes with a low carbon footprint, especially ceramic, but also stone (terrazzo), metal, felt, wood. The main element found in several points of the pavilion is Water, an extremely valuable resource of Romania.

IN COLLABORATION WITH NEWANCE DESIGN STUDIO

OMNINO SPECIALTY COFFEE SHOP STRASBOURG, FRANCE

This coffee shop is a place where the barista offers its customers a choice of various coffee drinks, on the spot or to go. Customers can also chose from coffee beans, homemade pastries, refreshments and personal extraction equipment. The challenge was to bring these activities to life in an area of approximately 20 m2, located in the city center of Strasbourg, at the crossroads of the famous Grande Rue. For this project I had the opportunity to contribute to the layout, the design of custom furniture and site monitoring. Originally, the room had marble ooring in good condition and a large mirror on one of the walls - we decided to keep both. The large mirror inspired a shelf that highlights the collection of old cups, in which Omnino serves its espresso since its inception. We mixed wood and metal for all the furniture. To create a feeling of lightness, we added the metal shelves. The bar has been optimized to cater to all the technical requirements for the operation of the place. We have dressed it with handmade bricks, selected on site in a craft brickyard in Alsace.

MASTERS PROJECT

C O N T E M P O R A R Y C E N T E R

SOCIAL CENTER “CASA RADIO“ BUCHAREST, ROMANIA The site is the plot of a building whose construction started in 1986 in sector 1 of the city and was to house the National Museum of History of the Socialist Republic of Romania, but was never completed. Currently it is known as Casa Radio. The project is developing on the entire site, and presents as a main program a speci c structure for incarceration - a center for correction - rehabilitation for young offenders. It involves questioning the design and implementation of such a center within a city, but also nding new scenarios of interaction with the city and its inhabitants. A new building brings these scenarios to life by balancing the colossal presence of the existing Casa Radio with a human scale program.

Educational centers. University centers are represented by circles, while colleges, high schools and schools are represented by points.

Green spaces. Nearby are the Opera Park, the Heroes Park, the Botanical Garden and the Dambovita River.

Public transport. 4 metro lines run near the site, as well as the train station (north of the site) and the bus station (south of the site).

16

Volume. The new building is located on the western boundary of the site and aims to make the transition between the small urban fabric and the monumental construction. The entire site is treated in opposition: part is vegetal, with the extension of the park and the establishment of agricultural elds against the skate park and the paved square. The shape of the building was generated by the needs of the program in relation to the different free or restricted paths.

ROYAL HASKONINGDHV IN COLLABORATION WITH ROBERT COLLIGNON

BRITISH PETROLEUM REFFINERY ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

The largest project I worked on throughout my internship at Royal HaskoningDHV was the British Petroleum Ref nery in the Port of Rotterdam. The project has been developed in several stages. First, the new interior layout of the security building - the gateway to the re nery site - was designed, as well as replacing the canteen with a new server room and medical center. At the same time, entrances were requali ed, new access roads were created and sidewalks were de ned; two car parks were built : one service car park inside the re nery, and another one for visitors and employees outside the industrial site. The second step of the project was to design a central cloakroom for the re nery in a second block, parallel to the security one. The ground oor has been dedicated to cloakrooms, while the rst oor hosts of ces. In the third stage, the administrative block linking the security block and the changing rooms was developed. To complete the previous phases, functions such as an auditorium, of ces and technical rooms were planned.

23

The development of the projects is interconnected, and brings a missing uidity. This creates a meeting and general exchange place between the various parties involved in the operation of the re nery.

The ground oor is divided in two: men’s locker rooms and women’s locker rooms. The sanitary zones are located to the north of the building. Two transverse and symmetrical entrances facilitate access to the building for workers coming from the car park, and also returning from the work site. On the rst oor, the building is connected by a bridge to the west with the building of the Control Room, marked with “DMZ“ in the plan. The bridge creates a meeting space between the different management teams of the re nery. Another bridge creates a second link to the south with the administrative body, connected in turn to the security building. The plan of the 1st oor envisages an interpretation of the open of ce workspace concept, and includes a strip of meeting rooms, as well as technical and break areas as separation. For the rst time since the construction of the re nery, the various teams will share common areas, which will certainly improve the interpersonal relations of employees.

ROYAL HASKONINGDHV IN COLLABORATION WITH ROBERT COLLIGNON

PALLAS - FACADE DESIGN PETTEN, THE NETHERLANDS C O M P E T I T I O N - Fi r s t p r i z e

In collaboration with INVAP and the companies TBI Croon Wolter & Dros - Mobilis, and Robert Collignon of RHDHV, we worked on the facade design in the contest launched by the PALLAS foundation. The exercise was to create a faรงade language that could make the transition between the nuclear reactor and its surroundings: the dunes and Petten beach. In both designs, the reactor can be distinguished as a secure closed box, slightly higher than the media installations. Due to the large size of the reactor building, a subtle materialization creates tactility to reduce the scale of facades to a human size. Search for colors and materiality present on the site.

29

Research for textures and materials, and their implementations.

30

Closed option The interpretation of the closed concept results in a volume composed of two concrete volumes, dependent and monolithic. They have a rigid and minimalist appearance. The interior volume containing the reactor is darker and narrower. The exterior one is clearer and contains other related features. The sheer size of orthogonal shapes and circular round windows sets it apart from other campus buildings.

31

Open option The second approach is based on a rigorous interpretation of a concept that applies to all campus buildings. All vertical and versatile bands in the orthogonal dark outer volume open the reactor building to the environment. Looking between these palisades, one can see the colorful interior facade of the volume of the nuclear facility.

RE-INTRODUCTION OF FAVELAS IN THE URBAN FABRIC OF HIGIENOPOLIS NEIGHBORHOOD RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

33

The project site is bounded by Linha Amarela expressway to the North, the commercial avenue dos Democraticos in the East, another road and rail network in the West and a park that is part of the nursing home of the district in the South.

34

The project wants to mend the urban fabric, linking the Higienopolis neighborhood with the adjacent favela Agricola with the same name. The intervention site has dug into the existing urban fabric. A pedestrian route crosses the entire project, linking the three different parts. The rst part, on the corner is a service station that includes a gas station, a garage, a car wash station, a supermarket and of ces. A uid path along the second building connects several programs: a business incubator, a training center and a coworking, a cinema and a library. The third part is the social center that includes a sports center, a kindergarten, housing and a new public square in the heart of the neighborhood.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECT WORKSHOP

MUNICIPAL SWIMMING POOL OF NAPLES PIER CARLO PISCANE, ITALY The density of the neighboring projects made me contemplate the project in relation to the need of space. I decided to build below ground level in order to clear a view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The municipal pool program is derived from the lack of similar facilities in the city. The project has two programs - a swimming pool and a spa complex with a café. The spa and the swimming pool create a complementary wellness experience crowned by views to splendid scenery over the sea and the Vesuvius: from the spa’s café and from the pool’s beach. The two programs are also independent thanks to the separate entrances and overlapping functionality. The pool facilities are accessible by a ramp that takes the axis of Via Duomo (orange line)and include an outdoor bar terrace. Stairs and an elevator lead to the spa complex and café bar. The café bar is in open access, but separate from the beach.

To create the connection to water, a platform at a height of one meter above sea level was added. The building takes the materiality of the docks, and reminds of the city’s underground galleries. Access to the pool is via a ramp for each visitor to notice how gradually one immerses into a concrete block only to be completely surprised by the hidden view. This creates a special connection with the mountain and the sea.

Finally, in the pool, one is facing the sea. This paints a brutal reality, which gives a human scale to cruise traf c and cargo ships. This way, one realizes that we are very small.

TOWARDS ONE CITY ZWEI STÄDTE - EIN WEG

KONSTANZ - KREUZLINGEN GERMANY - SWITZERLAND

Forming the center of an urban area, the cities of Konstanz and Kreuzlingen are a major agglomeration by the lake. Konstanz is an attractive city for its quality of life and its strong landscape presence; the preservation of the environment is an important element. Our project is part of an environmental philosophy, with a concept based on the quali cation of two different green corridors that complement each other and allow quality and development common to both cities. These are therefore a natural corridor and a unifying green space linking the two entities. The goal is to enhance the border in order to live it, instead of trying to hide it.

43

Urban project.. Public transport. A redesigned bus network with new routes being put in place, improves ef ciency in both cities. This is part of a desire to ef ciently serve the new neighborhood, as well desaturate the downtown.

Intermodal transportation points. Transport takes place in the continuity of the environmental philosophy. Thus intermodal nodes are set up to limit the impact of the car in the city and to better serve the areas to be urbanized.

Cycling network. The project also builds on top of existing but underdeveloped alternative means of transport through a proposal for a development strategy of the cycling network.

Green spaces. Our interest is to enhance the border. Urbanization is proposed through an urban park that federates the two cities. It responds to the imagined future vision, as well as the underlying philosophy.

44

A range of green space sequences is the product of border zone analysis. Each sequence unites green spaces of different nature. Thus an area is set up between water and agricultural, the next between village and agricultural, then between urban and new district and nally between dense urban and mixed urban. The border becomes a park that connects the Rhine river with the lake Konstanz. An attractive and publicly available link to the environment is established, that integrates seamlessly into the existing urban fabric. Looking forward, an opportunity arises to revive neighboring zones or to urbanise areas of the park. The requali cation of the Grenzstrasse in urban boulevard makes the border more practical, where each user nds its place.

LA BOULISTE SAINT-BONNET-LE-CHATEAU, FRANCE C O M P E T I T I O N - Fi r s t p r i z e a n d c o n s t r u c t i o n

The geometric purity of the gesture made while throwing a ball of petanque led us to imagine a shelter that becomes a path to re ection. A wire structure that reproduces the movements drawn during the game transforms imagination into reality. The goal is to highlight the dynamic of the game and its movements, but also to create a mirror for analyzing these gestures.

47

Side elevation with measurements.

Face elevation with measurements.

48

The installation consists of a steel piece that marks the beginning of the game, metal rods, and petanque balls OBUT. The piece, the spine of the shelter, has the diameter of a petanque ball, in reference to the manufacture of balls. Its shape suggests the different trajectories and heights of the launch of the ball. The metal rods suggest the trajectory of the ball when launched through the gesture and its simpli ed trajectory. The structure invites visitors to play, but also immortalizes the game at its different stages. The randomly placed balls on the site put the garden and shelter in a dynamic space in continuous motion.

PRISON IN THE CITY

Architecture and image - ENSAS - supervising teacher Nicolas Bender

Every day we walk by important elements in our present that we do not even notice anymore. The gray in its subtlety is lost in the daily, we only see the colors. We try to almost forget the role of concrete. This series of photos wants to highlight the boring in our everyday life and

show it in another light. The dramatic approach is to emphasize the material in its raw state. The twilight softens the aggressiveness of concrete and brings out the contrast between different qualities and textures. Finally, light becomes in itself a form of architecture. 52
