eTwinning project “Teens’ Actions for Good” (T.A.G)_ 2015/2016

As citizens of the world, we must address issues we face on a global and local level and embrace our rights and responsibilities to foster the universal virtues of acceptance and understanding to achieve a sustainable development. Needless to say that the current elementary and secondary school curricula are lacking in cultural and global studies and, as a result, students are not being made culturally sensitive or globally aware at school. With this project, we intend to respond to this issue. Inspired by global programmes like Global Youth Service Day, SID 2016, TAG project aims to help young people find inspiration, access information, identify problems, get involved and take action to solve these problems and improve their local communities. It brings together young people (11-15) from Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic and Poland to collaboratively address global and local problems and create positive change. All in all, the project is about enabling participants to develop creative thinking and entrepreneur skills for life.

         

Develop a sense of social responsibility and awareness of global issues; Develop creative thinking 'thinking outside the box'; Develop entrepreneur skills; Become socially active young people who can work collaboratively with other youth to make a difference towards a more sustainable world; Learn how to collaboratively identify a problem in their community; Design and implement an action-plan intended to improve the issue; Get a better understanding of the world's language and cultural understanding so as to appreciate and respect different beliefs, cultures and backgrounds; Improve communication skills in the foreign languages; Learn how to use apps sensibly and sustainably for their personal and educational development; Create apps to solve a problem of the community.

Campaign: “E se fosse eu? Fazer a mochila e partir”/ WHAT’S IN MY BAG?

9

The European Club of Agrupamento de Escolas de Sátão and members of TAG eTwinning project accepted the challenge thrown down by the Portuguese Ministry of Education to take part in this awareness campaign aimed at sensitizing pupils to the Syrian Refugees crisis and making them feel the hardships of being a refugee. We invited teachers, pupils and school personnel, parents and the local community as well as eTwinning project partners and all eTwinners to join the campaign “E se fosse eu? Fazer a mochila e partir”. The challenge consisted in imagining the following situation: If you had to flee from your country which is at war with only a small bag in which to pack your most valued and needed possessions, what would you fill your bag with? Pupils either brought the bag with the things they chose or a photo of the bag with those things, presented it to the class and explained their choices and registered their ideas as a comment to the photo they published on the Facebook Page.

Children have a strong disposition to explore and discover and this is most often lost along the way through the years of formal education. Teenagers seem reveal weak motivation for school work. In order to ignite pupils’ curiosity and lever their level of motivation we take a project-based approach in this project. This approach is based on the creation of authentic learning environment that enables pupils to interact, question, connect, collaborate, problemsolve, communicate, present the results of their work to a real audience and reflect about what they learn. Pupils grow more conscious and responsible they have the opportunity to choose the topics of their interest and their own learning paths. TAG’s teachers are engaged to unleash their pupils’ creativity and potentials by promoting learning about the real life that extends beyond the classroom to each student’s home, community, nation, and the world. Pupils became active participants in and shapers of their worlds and the world around them by finding solutions to social and environmental issues.

THE BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and T.A.G members took action during the week of GYSD, from 15th to 22nd April. In Agrupamento de Escolas de Sátão (PT) eTwinning group, The Untouchable organised a campaign that was held on the 18th April in Escola Secundária Frei Rosa Viterbo. Carolina, Letícia, Telma,Tatiana e Miguel made 200 blue ribbons and 36 blue masks. They decorated a table and created an awareness video. They distributed the campaign flyers given by the Portuguese Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People and blue ribbons throughout the school. They invited their schoolmates to wear a blue T-shirt and the blue ribbon to show their fight against children abuse. They called students to join a flash mob which consisted of one minute of silence to reflect on the ill-treatment of children. The objective of this action was to alert our community to the issue. We have disseminated our action in eTwinning Live, on Facebook and our school webpage and invited other eTwinners and our partners to leave a message in the TAG Blue Ribbon Campaign mural: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIk7c3RTfPQ Watch our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OU9ISIEFg8

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AGAINST DISCRIMINATION

Our eTwinning group, The Winners organised an Awareness Campaign against Discrimination on 22nd March 2016 at "ATL - Centro de Atividades de Tempos Livres"- the local after-school day care centre in Sátão. We showed the animated short film "The Present" (https://vimeo.com/152985022) created by Jacob Frey to a group of 40 children. It is a touching movie about a young boy who prefers to spend his time indoors playing videogames to discovering what’s outside the door until the day his mother decides to give him a special present, which makes it hard for him to concentrate on his video game. The story is based on Fabio Coala’s comic strip named “Perfection.” After watching the film, we started a little discussion about the message conveyed and we invited the children to draw or colour drawings about the film. We also played affection games. In the end, we exhibited the drawings in the room and we offered a candy and a bracelet with a message against discrimination. We were supported by our parents who drove us to the ATL, our English teacher who gave us suggestions and by the staff of the institution. We intended to call the attention of the children attending the ATL in Sátão to a problem that affects many people in our community and teach them to accept the difference. LILT RACE

In our region there is a great sensitivity about deterrence of the tumours, which affect people of different ages. We decided to participate to "LILT Race" (LILT is an acronym for " Lega Italiana per la lotta contro i tumori", Italian League against cancer) as athletes (five students and two teachers - English and Physical Education) and as a race assistants (one student). Our school organized the race for all city schools. The race took place on 9 April at "Parco del Cormor", a city park near our school; 400 people - students and teachers - ran for prevention. The race consists in a relay 4x1000 in which various teams take part to remember that keeping fit is an important way of preventing cancer. The race is organized to sensitize and inform students on prevention of cancer; in schools are also held experts talks. AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FOR THE PROBLEM OF PET’S ABANDONMENT

From 31st March to 12th April, we, The Players, visited the dog/cat kennel in Rãs, Sátão. We saw so many pets begging for a home and that moved us. So, we volunteered to give them food, we played with them and helped the kennel staff feeding and medicating the animals. Some of them had just arrived! We also took photos of the animals for the blog we created to invite people adopt a pet. In Sátão, we tried to spot abandoned pets on the streets. We fed the ones we found and took photos of them too. We posted the photos on our blog with the location of the animals on Google maps. We had the support of Bruno’s father who drove us to the kennel and our English teacher who helped us plan and monitor our work in class. With this action we intended to call the populations’ attention to the need to provide a home to these stray pets to make the town we live in safer as well. The staff of the kennel invited us to come more often and that more people should follow our example. Video: https://youtu.be/Gctm_fJ95xc

FOR BETTER RECYCLING AT SCHOOL

In the corridors of our school there are containers for separate collection of waste for recycling (paper, plastic, unsorted waste). In most villages or cities where students live, separate collection of waste has already been implemented for several years. However, at school, often litter is not thrown in the right container. In order to improve the collection for recycling by the students and the school staff, our class will prepare posters, signs etc that will be put near the containers. We will take pictures of the containers before and after our action to monitor the efficacy of our signs. Our project in the school’s website: http://goo.gl/ERH62t. A FOREST CLEAN-UP BY THE POWERFUL TEENS

On 1st April, we, The Powerful Teens, went to Casal de Cima, Rio de Moinhos, for a clean-up action so as to contribute to keep forests clean and to prevent wild fires. We were four pupils from year 9 Class C (Ana Francisca, Hugo, Maria and Matilde) helped by our parents who drove us to the village. After having announced our action and gotten the authorization from the President of the Parish Council, Mr. Miguel Cabral, we met to clean up a forest area of about 50 m2 around the football pitch of the village. We found a lot of garbage like old clothes, paper, plastic bags, packaging and bottles. We even found an old television set! We had the support of our English teacher who helped us plan and monitored our work in English classes. With this action we hope to have contributed to call the population’s awareness to the need to keep forests clean to reduce the risks of wild fires and soil contamination. We addressed SDG 15 “Life on Land” against land degradation and biodiversity loss. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3zpPquI6ZI

Forty years ago, on 6th May 1976, our region was hit by a disastrous earthquake. During the organization for rescue the first form of civil defence was established. Now Civil Defence (Protezione Civile) is an institution dedicated to the interventions and aid in case of natural events in Italy and abroad, both with its specialized staff and a network of volunteers in the territory. On April 12th 2016 we organized in our school an informational event open to other classes to know and to spread the culture of civil volunteering. APP: THE DROPPER BY THE INNOVATIVE MINDS

Dropper” is an application created to solve the problem of water shortages in the summer. When we interviewed The mayor of our town, he told us that his main worry is the big waste of water which will be drastically felt in the summer. “The Dropper” was developed to alert and inform the people of our community to the impact of an excessive consumption and waste of water. The application has several buttons with different daily activities, like hands-washing, showering …and more. For each activity, the application will determine the unnecessary waste of water in Euros according the time of usage. After the calculation of the waste of water is converted into EUROS, the application will present some tips on how to save water, i.e. to save money. We believe that “Dropper” will effectively make people reduce the quantity of water they waste as they will realise not only how harmful it is for the environment but also how much they can save from their family budget. APP: ANIMALLING

Our app "Animalling" has been created in order to reduce the number of abandoned animals, at least, in our region. With this app, we aim to provide a home to the largest number of animals that we can, because increasingly there is a higher animal abandonment rate, and we think that all the animals should have a owner to look after them. In the first screen of our app there are 4 buttons. In the first button, you can find the locations of the abandoned animals, that is going to be updated by the responsible vet. In the second button, the users can make a donation to the institution that will be in charge of the animals. You can make a donation or food donation. In the third button, the target audience can adopt an animal through a link that refers to a blog. There, you can choose the animal to adopt. In the fourth button, the help, if you're with some problem or doubt about our app, you can clarify it here. Concluding, the participation in the Apps4Good project was an asset to us, because it helped us understand some of our society's problems and it made us think that, with the technology we have today, we have several ways to solve them.

APP: ACTIONS HOPE

ActionsHope was developed for a project called "Apps for Good" which aims to minimize problems in Portuguese society. Our application is called "Actions hope" and aims to help all seniors who live isolated or are alone. We have chosen this topic because in Sátão municipality there are many elderly living isolated and without contact with the world outside. Our application is simple and aims to help elderly people to turning ask for help in an emergency situation. The application has six buttons on the home screen. By pressing the button one it will call the 112, which in an emergency can be a fundamental help, because the elderly may be in danger and not know where to call; the second button opens another screen and will show the elderly the family contacts and friends, with whom they can talk whenever they feel alone or need something; the third button connects to the pharmacy where the elderly can order all the medicines they need, without having to go there; the fourth button will link to the central taxis number, in the case of the elderly people need to leave home; the fifth will link you to the health center, where the elderly can confirm whether or not they will have a medical appointments and the last one will allow the elderly to make a phone call to the nearest supermarket and ask for someone deliver the purchases at home. To conclude, I think it was good to participate in this project, not only because we have improved our programming competences, but also because we hope everyone will enjoy our application.

APP: MushTypes by The Viriatos

Our app is “Mushtypes” and we created this app because there is no guide to identify the vast variety of mushrooms in our region. So we are creating this app to help people to have the ability to compare the poisoned mushrooms with the healthy ones, assuming people’s well-being. We know that the potential users of this app are the population of Sátão, because we live here and in our app we give information about the mushrooms existing here, like their characteristics, recipes, their location and what we have to do in case of poisoning. Mushtypes is a simple app. In the first page there are three buttons. When we press the first one, we find 6 types of mushrooms existing in our region. We select one of them and then we find their characteristics, their appearance, where we can find them, easily confused mushrooms and some recipes. The second one is about “Feira do Míscaro”. When we press this button, we will find information about this market, like the date and the location. The last one is emergency. When we press this button, we have instructions about what we should do in case of poisoning. With the participation in the Apps for Good project, we developed our team spirit because we had to come together and organize ourselves to be able to do all the tasks proposed. We also realized there are some issues in our region that we didn’t know. Because we had to think of a solution for them, we became better citizens in this world.

CAMPAIGN AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA

eTwinning group The Unicorns wanted to combat homophobia. The action was carried out at school, on 18th March 2016 which was Open School Day. We made Origami Fortune Tellers and played the game with people who visited our school on Open Day. It consisted of 8 numbers in multicolored hearts (with the colours of the rainbow flag which is the symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements) and the word hidden under all 8 parts was the word ‘Homophobia’. The challenge was to say the first word that came into their minds when they heard the word ‘homophobia’. We questioned 60 people. Most of them responded “gay” and some were rude and used inappropriate language as a reaction. Others didn’t know what homophobia meant and some of them even thought about spiders or fear. With this ‘little game’ we realised that people in our community are not aware of the concept and that they still hold discriminatory beliefs towards homosexuals. We hope we have raised participants’ awareness towards the issue and the need to stop discrimination against people for their sexual orientations. LETTER WRITING MARATHON 2015

Teens in Action for Good took part in another edition of the Letter Writing Marathon and organized the campaign in their schools to collect as many signatures and letters as possible. The letters have served Amnesty International to put pressure on authorities, and over the years they have resulted in life-changing impacts for many. We collected more than 500 signatures to support the cases above and that we sent to AI.
