Danube River

Danube River The Danube is the only European river flowing from west to east. It springs from the Black Forest Mountains (Germany) in the form of two rivers called Brigach and Breg that spring beneath the Kandel peak and unite in the town of Donaueschingen in the courtyard of the FĂźrstenberg castle.

The River’s Many Names Oddly enough, the waterway is not called “Danube” in any of the countries through which it runs. In German, it is the Donau; in Czech, the Dunaj; in Hungarian, the Duna and so forth. Worshipping a god of the same name, the ancient Romans called the waterway Danubius. All these names derive from the Celtic word danu, which means “to flow” or “to run.”

Travelling for work, tourism and education boosts the economy and, with the second longest river in Europe running through so many EU countries, nature has provided the Region with the perfect means of transport and communication. But the river as a transport route is not being used to its full potential: cargo transported on the Danube is only 10-20% of that transported on the Rhine. Energy is also vital to prosperity – insecure supplies and a lack of essential infrastructure and maintenance show themselves in the periodic energy crises which hit the region.

VIDIN - CALAFAT ROAD AND RAIL BRIDGE

Fairness - a region without backwaters

Connecting the Region Only one bridge for 400 kilometres along the Danube means ferries are the main way of crossing the river between Romania and Bulgaria. A new bridge between Calafat, Romania, and Vidin, Bulgaria, will provide a much needed link, stimulating tourism and helping local business make the most of access to international markets. 2012 should see the completion of the bridge, funded to thetune of â‚Ź106 million by the EU.

The Danube

The Danube is an important international river road, flowing through 10 countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine) and has tributaries in seven other countries.

Ecology and environment The commission, established in 1998, deals with the whole Danube river basin, which includes tributaries and the groundwater resources. Its goal is to implement the Danube River Protection Convention by promoting and coordinating sustainable and equitable water management, including conservation, improvement and rational use of waters and the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.

Protecting the Environment

A better environment cooperation for conservation Europe’s environmental health lies in its wetlands, meadows and forests, all of them features of the landscape along the Danube.

DANUBEPARKS Eight countries come together to share their expertise in the ght to preserve biodiversity along the Danube and to protect the good plain through the use of woodland management.

Danube so blue, so bright and blue, through vale and field you flow so calm, our Vienna greets you, your silver stream through all the lands you merry the heart with your beautiful shores. Far from the Black Forest you hurry to the sea giving your blessing to everything. Eastward you flow, welcoming your brothers, A picture of peace for all time! Old castles looking down from high, greet you smiling from their steep and craggy hilltops, and the mountains' vistas mirror in your dancing waves. The mermaids from the riverbed, whispering as you flow by, are heard by everything under the blue sky above. The noise of your passing is a song from old times and with the brightest sounds your song leads you ever on.

Art of Danube

Area of rare biodiversity Danube Delta The Delta of the Danube River represents one of the last natural paradises in Europe, a network of channels, lakes, and lushly vegetated forests. It is home to a fascinating mix of cultures and peoples and a huge diversity of birds, presided over by the greatest of all of them, the Pelican. The Danube Delta is a refuge for people like you who love the peace and quiet of nature. As you explore the vast complex of lakes and channels, you will discover a dreamworld still untrammeled by human intervention. Occupying around 5800 sq.km, the Danube Delta is the second largest in Europe, after the Volga Delta. It was formed approximately 12 000 years ago at the point where the Danube flows into the Black Sea. The Danube arises in the German Black Forest and flows across 10 countries, a distance of 2 860 km. It flows into the Black Sea as three main branches: the Chilia, Sulina, and Sf.Gheorghe (Saint George).

Danube Delta The birds and the sun create a spectacular show that can only bee seen in the Danube Delta.

Every square meter is different from the other, every corner has something else to releav and the scenery is simply amazing, and hard to describe in words.

The Main–Danube Canal Throughout history, mankind has tried to alter the course of Europe’s major rivers. Twelve hundred years ago, Charlemagne dreamed of connecting the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers into one watercourse between the North Sea and the Black Sea.

The construction of canals involves ecological dangers. The Main-Danube Canal makes it possible for animals to spread from Western to Eastern Europe or in the opposite direction. These are so-called invasive species, which often cause difficulties in the ecosystem of their new home: competition with the species already living there, lack of predators, etc.

In 1992, this dream was realized with the opening of the Main-Danube Canal. This 106-mile-long canal created a 2,200-mile-long waterway which passes through 15 countries and unites hundreds of inland ports. While the Canal is an artificial waterway, it by no means detracts from the natural beauty around it. In fact, very few passing through it on a cruise can detect that it is not an organic element of the landscape. Natural splendor and engineering marvels combine to create the Danube’s unique majesty.

The Main-Danube Canal Turns Ten Years Old

Traveling by river cruising ship has been a trend and has become an important part.

While they enjoy their lands and explore the region, the fresh water tanks of the ships are filled or the refuse is disposed of properly.

The Danube River was once extremely important for fisherman but this has declined since the Middle Ages. Some regions are still very active but there are also a variety of endangered species in the Danube River such as sturgeon species.

Tourism along the Danube River is diverse with natural places of interest including the Wachau Valley, Hungary's Gemenc, Germany's Nationalpark Donau-Auen, Croatia's, KopaÄ?ki rit, Romania and Serbia's Iron Gate, Romania's Danube Delta, and Bulgaria's Srebarna Nature Reserve.

Panorama of the Danube

Along the Water One-third of the Danube’s total length is in Hungary; Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is often called “the Queen of the Danube.” The waterway is also a major artery in Austria, with ports at Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk and Vienna. The river is quite scenic, featuring the Iron Gate, where it flows through a gorge that forms part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania, and the picturesque Wachau wine valley near Melk, Austria.
