Romania - Danube Biodiversity The Danube:"The greatest treasure with which nature has endowed our countries"

What is biodiversity? BIODIVERSITY – the variety of all life forms: the different plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms, the genes they contain, the ecosystems of which they form a part… Biodiversity is greater than the sum of its parts. HEALTHY BIODIVERSITY A healthy biodiversity provides a number of natural services for everyone: Protection of water resources, Soils formation and protection, Contribution to climate stability, Food, Medicinal resources , Wood products, Diversity in genes, species and ecosystems, Recreation and tourism, Cultural values.

Treasure of biodiversity Diversity includes RICHNESS. The number of species per sample is a measure of richness.

Treasure of biodiversity The Danube Delta – Europe’s second-largest, but best preserved, delta – is an array of winding canals, marshes, rivers and lakes, replete with lush vegetation Highest priority for conservation in Romania should be on: The Danube Delta complex of ecosystems; Low attitude, broad-leaved forests on the plains; Danube River floodplain ecosystems – especially the shallow lakes; Brackish water lagoons. The Danube Delta is the place where hundreds of species of birds exist, including pelicans, swans, wild geese and flamingos, birds that are protected by law. The delta is also a seasonal stopover for migratory birds.pelicansswans wild geeseflamingos The Danube Delta has been awarded the status of Biosphere Reserve in 1990, and has been registered as Ramsar Site and world natural heritage site since 1991. It is the largest delta in Europe and conserves a very wide range of biodiversity specific to wetlands.

The great egret—unlike the typical egrets—does not belong to the genus Egretta but together with the great herons is today placed in Ardea. In the past, however, it was sometimes placed in Egretta or separated in a monotypic genus Casmerodius.

Diversity of Fishes Out of the over 25,000 species of fish worldwide, some counting for more than 450 million years of age, 300 could be seen in Europe and 135 in the Danube Delta

I LIKE FISHES!

I like sturgeons! Sturgeons represent a natural heritage of the Danube River Basin and key indicator species for high ecological quality of rivers. Their dramatic decline in the last decades has become an issue of basin-wide importance that got the attention of the Danube countries and the European Commission.

I LIKE STURGEONS! I LIKE CAVIAR!

I like fishes The fish fauna in the Danube Delta has a remarkable variety, comprising 135 species. Most of these are freshwater species but also marine species as well as eurihaline species living in the Black Sea and penetrating into the Delta and the Danube during the breeding season.

The swan is a very common bird spread all over the world and in Danube Delta is high in number. Its color is an impeccably white, the bill is red and it has some black spots around the eyes. They are big birds and weight even 12 kg. Due to their body and because are heavy, flying is not so easy and need more space to fly. Once in the air, the swans are flying in V-shaped flocks. The swan is also a good swimmer and it benefits from this to catch fish through its fast movements. It feeds also with different plants. They are solitary birds which prefer not to share the territory with other species and they build the nests in higher areas from the reed. Here the female in May lay downs and hatch 4-6 eggs. The swans are birds which are used with the cold weather and sometimes during winter they stay here.

ROMANIA

TREASURE OF BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity is the foundation of ecosystem services to which human well-being is intimately linked.

Diversity includes RICHNESS

The Danube is of huge significance to Romania, since the country is almost entirely within the Danube Basin. The Romanian section covers almost a third of the surface area of the Basin, and over a third of the river’s length flows through the country.

Romanian society has witnessed an unprecedented tragedy in its recent history. More than 50 lives were lost as a result of some deficiency of integrity in the way the Romanian administration serves citizens.

The EU Strategy for the Danube Region includes the Danube River basin.
