Sustainability museum in the fortress of Rion
1
Thesis project, 2012-2013 Supervisor: Elias Kostantopoulos Team: Maria Charami, Katerina Petrocheilou
The fortress of Rion is located near the city of Patras and right next to the Rion-Antirion bridge. The access to the fortress is nowadays very problematic because of the two ports that are situated nearby, connecting Peloponesse with central Greece. In addition, the construction of the bridge left behind vast, empty spaces that discourage people from visiting the place. As a result the fortress remains closed and unkown to most people. Our purpose is to give new life to the place and create a new meeting space for local people and visitors. Taking into consideration the nearby university of Patras we decided to give to the fortress an educational character. We create an open sustainability museum where the natural elements in which the fortress is daily exposed, such as sea water, sun, wind and rain are used as energy sources for the autonomy of the place. The proccess of the energy production is open to the visitors who can gain valuable information about sustainability. fortress of Antirion

We imagine that the fortress is besieged by the natural elements and the form of siege engines is an ispiration to us. We create small constructions that are “climping on the fortress’s walls and inside each one of them a different proccess is taking place. Our project is structured in 3 layers: the promenade, the constructions and the garden.
4 relaxing points vegetation areas
The promenade: The promenade is elevated on the walls of the fortress. Along the way we meet the constuctions as well as vegetation areas and small relaxing points with abundant view to the surroundings.

The constructions: Small metall and wood constructions whose form is inspired by siege engines. They are entirely based on the walls without touching the ground.

Constructions: Each and everyone of them contains stairs that connect the promenade with the garden level. 3 out of 11 constructions will be presented here while all of them have been examined and designed in the same way.

This construction is located at the exact point where the old entrance of the ottoman fortress was located. It contains a reception and information area and it marks the beginning of the promenade. The building is covered with wooden shutters, that in certain places allow a better visual contact with the outside.

Floor plan
The construction is covered with large shutters that rotate due to the strong wind that often blows in the area. The rotation produces a small amount of energy that is used for the lighting of the contsruction at night. As the visitor enters the construction the movement of the shutters, the sound and the changing light intensify the sense of the wind.

In the northern spot of the fortress we place a construction that exploits the sunlight. It is covered with pfotovoltaic panels incorporated on moving shutters. The energy is collected during the day and used for the lighting of the construction during the night. The construction is also used as an observatory as it offers ample view to the surroundings and the opposite coast and it also allows access to the beach.

Through a bridge that hangs above the moat you reach the entrance of the fortress. A wooden building hanging on the walls.
10
2
The promenade begins near the parking area. A ramp lifts you to a higher level and leads you to the building of the port. A high wall on your left hides the fortress from you and you can only get a glimpse of what will follow through small openigs...
The second building you meet is the construction that gives you information about the cistern where the rainwater is collected. It is made of corteen, a material that is affected by the presence of the water. When you exit the construction you walk in a narrow corridor through the water of the cistern.
5
While walking through the building of the port what was hidden behind the wall finally appears. A planted square on your left and the fortress straight ahead.
Through an aerial bridge you reach the three towers of the fortress. A stop there to admire the view..
11
6
Next stop is the construction devoted to the wind. The movement of the lerge shutters produces enough energy to light the building at night and maintain a research lab on the lower level. The facade changes constantly, as well as the shadows inside the construction.
9
You reached the end of the promenade. A big construction that looks like the one of the entrance, inticates the exit of the fortress. You can either exit or continue your walk to the lower level, the level of the garden.
12
7
Continue walking and you will reach a relaxing spot with a marvellous view to the sea and the opposite coast. The coffee house is nearby where you can enjoy your coffe on a table “hanging above the sea.
10
When leaving the fortress you come closer to the bridge and the second port.
8
In the northern spot of the fortress you will find a construction dedicated to the sun. A building covered with photovoltaic panels incorporated on moving shutters. During the day the shutters are closed creating a dark space while at night the shutters are open and the building is illuminated from the inside, lighting up the whole place like a lighthouse. The stairs lead you to the roof where you have a great view to the bridge or to the beach.
13
The garden : The garden of the fortress is a big planted area surrounded by walls. Inside these walls the old rooms and cells are now used as libraries, exhibition rooms and offices for the archeological department. There is also a small museum where you can find information the history of the fortress.
Spots of interest
The promenade is designed considering the view to these spots...
..and seperates the garden in two parts. The one at a lower level than the other.
A perimetric promenade is added, along with some plateaus in certain places.

[AC-CA] Casablanca Sustainable market square
International student competition November 2012 Team: Maria Charami, Kyriakos Polyzogopoulos, Katerina Petrocheilou, Eugenia Spyridonos
ABOUT THE COMPETITION The aim of this competition is to design a New Sustainable Market Square in Casablanca. The architecture of this new structure should reflect contemporary design tendencies. The proposal must not only attend to the specific function but the design should also take into consideration the urban insertion and its impact. This competition hopes to achieve the following: -Research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing an original market. -Create a new comtemporary social space where locals can meet and shop. -Generate the discussion and ideas about the functionality of community and street commerce. -Meet the requirements of Green Architecture. -Experiment with innovative materials. The site is strategically located a managable distance from the Medina along Boulevard Tahar El Alaoui and the Hassan II Mosque.Total Proposed Area: 790m2

functions
The merchants always used to gather in the caravanserais, to rest during commercial trips, where they also had the opportunity to exchange ideas and promote their merchandise. The courtyard is a special characteristic of these caravanserais. A place that seems to be equally social in the Arabic culture, is the mosque with its grandiose minaret that makes it visible from all the parts of the city. Based on those two forms, we create a public place where a perimetric promenade leads to an observatory to the city. The market is open towards the internal square and permits the entrance. At the same time it is a public passage, always open independently of the timetable of the market.

The triangular shaped construction consists of repeated wooden frames, which permit the eye contact towards the interior. For the shading of the market blinds are used, with extra glass panels that when closed protect the exhibition shelves and transform them into the lighting source of the square and the boundary with the city. The corridor always remains accessible to people.
18
The water from the market and the rain, is led through channels to the square creating different spatial conditions during the day and the year, and end up watering the trees, that offer shade and create a better microclimate.

Natural architecture in the forest of Strofilia
20
Academic project 2012, 9th semester Supervisor: Konstantinos Grivas Team: Maria Charami, Katerina Petrocheilou
The purpose of this project is to create temporary shelters in the forest of Strofilia that will be used for: -scientific observation and study of the forest -protection and control -recreation and sports -information and education The use of natural materials and the reversibility of the intervention should be taken into consideration. The structure that we propose is based on the repetition of a triangular unit that leads to the creation of many different forms. This system of forms has the potential of being spread to the whole area but for this project we chose a certain path in the forest along wich we place our structures.Taking into consideration the high environmental value of the area we decided to create a space that offers environmental education, where information kiosks, gathering places and small dwellings are created.

For the units natural materials are used, such as reed and rope.

On a triangular frame made of reed we put 3 different coverings according to the use: -The dwellings require protection from the rain and some privacy. For that reason a dense layer of reed leaves covers the frame on the outside. - For shading we use units with light covering of thin reeds that lets some of the sun light through. -Finally for units that need to be more resistant we create an extra layer of strong reeds. Our units are fixed on the ground or suspended from the trees when needed.
