WOMENSWEAR MARKET

‘The main clothes shoppers are aged 16-34-years-old, the 7% rise in 25-34s over the next five years will benefit the womenswear market.’ (Mintel 2014a)

‘The womenswear market has grown by 4.6% in 2013 to reach £24.9 billion.’ (Mintel, 2014b)

‘The global womenswear market had total revenues of £407.7 billion in 2013, representing a compound annual growth rate of 3.2% between 2009 and 2013. Clothing, footwear, sportswear & accessories retailers accounted for the largest proportion of sales in the global womenswear market in 2013, sales through this channel generated £280.1 billion equivalent to 68.7% of the market’s overall value.’ (Nexis, 2014)

There’s an opportunity for designers to think outside the box for womenswear, women are looking for unique clothing which stand out from everything else. But women are more bargain hunters than men.

From Mintel it ‘estimates that the women’s fashion market will grow by 22% between 2013 and 2018 to reach £30.4 billion, as women’s confidence increases on the back of a recovering economy’ (Mintel 2014c)

‘Approximately 65% of women bought clothes online in the last 12 months, which highlights that females remain keener online shoppers than their male counterparts. Online shoppers are skewed towards under-35s’ (Mintel 2014d)

Drawing out inspiration from deep sea creatures and how they have an impact on new discoveries and creations, detailing of microscopic photography, small cells and bizarre, surreal chemical colours and microscopic view of engineered creatures. We are taking full control over nature to keep things the way mankind desires. Humans struggle to survive without scientific treatments; organisms are a successful connection for unique ideas of research.

MYSTIC HOPE FABRIC DIRECTION Mystic Hope features a mixture of vintage lace, textured fabrics with decorative detail. The palette consists of artificial blends of colour. Clashing with transparent PVC’s, netting and rough pattern. Playing with intriguing prints and emerging colours which can be worn in the winter to stand out from the crowd. Forming delicate embossing onto the fabrics, with raw surface enhancement. With some metallic shimmering shades which reflect to the trend.

TEXTURES AND GRAPHICS Microscopic photography, details of underwater creatures, graphic small cells which is beyond what the human eye could see, science and nature photography combined together, bizarre and surreal colour palettes.

Mystic Hope key shapes are high neck shirts, long blazers, midi skirts with lacing and woven knitwear. Structured items are layered together in simple textured silhouettes. Different materials are mixed and matched together to create a unique style.

What is your age? - 21 What are your interests and hobbies? - “Photography - Blogging - Socialising with friends - Rummaging through vintage and charity shops - Film” Where does your inspiration for your style come from? - “Fashion blogs, I tend to put my own twist on the clothes I wear.”

The consumer loves to hunt around in vintage boutiques to put together fun and bizarre clothing to reflect there personality. She loves to be out

socialising with

friends in bars and restaurants so she’s rarely at home. Addicted to social media to connect with friends and art

EVOLVING

FABRIC DIRECTION Laser-cutting detailing on fabrics, with premium materials such as metallic coated leather. Striking prints including croc metallic grey tones emerging for Autumn/Winter 16/17, and rustic leathers to give a tougher structured look to the clothing. Inspired by 3D structural tile patterns using fabric manipulation.

TEXTURES AND GRAPHICS Inspiration from graphics came from shapes of tiling on walls in the household, geometric structure from modern architecture, texture of liquid metal which gives off a metallic reflection. Viewing different gradients of colour and shapes from the images.

Evolving look can be achieved with structured, boxy jumpers and tops to match with wide leg crop trousers. Texture and metallic leather is key for this trend with laser cut pattern on jackets. A simple small clutch is the main accessory needed for the evolving woman.


The looks are futuristic but are also maximum in fabrics and texture with a touch of dynamic metallic. Quilted textured coats are important to finish off the look.

THE EVOLVING WOMAN

Georgina is a marketing communications manager living in London, Clapham Junction. What is your age? - 26 Do you use a lot of technology? - “Yes I have a Mac book pro, smart-phone, iPad and a Kindle.” What do you do in your spare time? - “Eating out at different restaurants in London, I try to go to the gym at least three times a week and enjoy going to local music gigs.” The evolving woman is always up to date with new technologies and connecting online with her friends and family. Every other month she loves to take mini breaks at the weekend to Paris to visit Family. Social singles ‘Singles now share, shop and socialise online. Being single means she can go on holiday when and where she wants. She can book last-minute breaks to European cities such as Berlin and London without having to check her partner’s availability. Our singles spend time in bars, nightclubs, restaurants and cafés, but they socialise as much online as they do offline.’ (LS:N Global, 2013)

EXPOSURE

FABRIC DIRECTION Weathered textured surfaces are key for this trend and experimental home textiles. Fabrics include leathers, non-leathers, synthetic woven’s and bonded constructions. Textures of the materials have distressed prints and decayed atheistic. Fabrics have two tone combinations of colours including bronze, ash grey and black. Cracked and swirled patterns and gold tones on different leathers from crumpled and crushed finishes.

TEXTURES AND GRAPHICS The aesthetic to the trend is rough, rustic and distressed textures showing the raw movement of the trend exposed. Crackling, and peeling of old surfaces and flooring, which are fully exposing the first layer of the material.

KEY SHAPES

The key shapes for the trend are harem tailored trousers slightly cropped lengths which hover above the ankle which give a sunken look, worn with polo neck crop jumpers to complete the look. Neutral and colour blocking fur jackets, texture is key for the trend.

The look can be achieved with a long knit oversized dress which sits on the knee or below teamed with a fur jacket. A plain black jumpsuit is an essential for exposure to keep the trend fresh and directional.

THE EXPOSED WOMAN Annelisa is a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University, graduating Sports Science. Working at Addenbrooks hospital in Cambridge as a physiotherapy assistant. What is your age? - 22 Is social media important to you? - “Yes, I stay connected with friends, and also use it to interact with fashion brands to get the latest updates and discounts.” Describe yourself in a few sentences? “Career driven and ambitious, I rely a lot on my smartphone and iPad, I couldn’t live without them. Travelling is key when I can fit it around work.” The consumer loves to travel and live life on the edge,

attending festivals throughout the summer months. In her spare time she goes to David Lloyd gym 3 times a week keeping a healthy but hectic lifestyle.

‘Career success and increased spending power are giving rise to a new breed of highly educated, affluent and entrepreneurial woman. These women exude a positive ‘alpha’ spirit, which is empowering rather than aggressive, and collaborative rather than competitive.
