EDUCATION VOLUNTEERING PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS
2016 ARCHITECTURE MASTER DEGREE. ENSAB (Rennes, France). Final project : cob buildings in the neighbourhood of the Blosne. Organizing a participative process : dialog with the inhabitants of the city, advertising the project to the public.Landscape and architecture planning centered around a community garden. Creation of a commercial area and a training space for cooking careers. Technical analysis of the earth used in the project by performing tests in the INSA (engineer school) laboratories. Since 2015 VOLUNTEERING. AccroTerre, organization aiming for the acknowledgement of earth as a construction material (Rennes, France). In partnership with the IAUR (urbanism department of the city), work in a multidisciplinary team for a research program, with the goal of realizing several projects by 2018, such as multiunit building sustained with load-bearing earth walls. Participation in various volunteer work : firm of local architect Amélie Le Paih (cob walls), composting toilets (wattle and daub technique). August-september 2015 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP. LES GANIVELLES WRITER’S CABIN - A BEACH IN BRITTANY

Our goal was to design occasional housing for a lonesome writer, looking for inspiration. The beaches of Brittany, with their changing skies and wild dunes, are chosen as the site to conceive our project. « Ganivelles » are slim wooden fences anchored deeply in the ground. They protect the dunes and its ecosystem from wind and erosion by trapping the sand, and from the wandering people by setting boundaries. The shelter we have designed is some sort of extension of these natural barriers. Blending in the dune, it reuses old « ganivelles » as a protective exterior, and is sustained by a wooden structure on deep posts. Once inside, the writer goes down a flight of stairs which guides him through spaces that are more and more intimate. The furniture and the floor are just one element. To his right, the view to the sea slowly disappears, meanwhile to his left, the earth and sand coating is warm to the touch, after a day below the sun. At the end of the corridor, a spiral staircase takes him to an elevated office. Slightly askew, it allows an access to the terrace roof, observation deck with a magnificent point of view to the sea.

seek to increase the density of the housing in this very sparse neighbourhood by colonizing the top of the buildings, ideal spots for urban expansion. We want to break through the pre-established limits of the edifice. An extension raises its height, while an external structure expands through the outside and the inside of the block. Walkways connect the housing units between them, as well as to the green core. Finally, a plant-covered barrier creates a visual and sound protection from the street.

SIDENTS’ WORDS
The
Saint Michel block, getting more and more deteriorated with the passing of the years, is loosing all the shops that brought him to life. The activities are very unequally dispatched, both spatially and temporally. The courtyards are private, but abandoned by the residents. A sector very rich in architectural heritage is being neglected. After some interviews with the residents and the shop owners, we have defined the goals of our proposition. The reconciliation between spaces and activities, by giving it a common purpose : the artistic development, by all and for all.

The former cul-de-sac of the Barillères returns to its original open form. The private courtyard is redesigned at a smaller scale and more appropriable by the inhabitants. To revitalize the street by day, the bars are re-opened and associated with various programs such as cinema, international encounters, bookshop, theatre...). In the southern part of the block, the establishment of a neighbourhood association in the former warehouses creates a link between the barmen and the residents, while preserving a convivial spirit. At last, the empty space in front of the Jeu de paume building is chosen for the creation of a park, for strolling, street-food, or an exterior exposition space. The interior of the building is transformed into an art gallery. Mobile panels close the park at night. They are used as support for the expositions on the garden side, and for posters and free expression on the side of the street.

The structural principle is inspired by the large load-bearing walls that cross the whole block. We decided to extend them, following the ancient plots of land. The interstices between these new concrete walls are filled with a prefabricated wooden structure, light and discreet. It allows a great malleability and therefore a freedom with the dimensions and the positions of the openings. The choice of a prefabricated construction mode resolves the issue of the access in such a narrow space. The housing units, above the workshops, are organized by a principle of half-bearings, associated with a luminous slit to light the deep rooms. The verticality of the rooms, circulations, concrete walls and openings takes a turn on the ground floor, in the workshops facades.

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE SHARED GARDEN
The existing constructions on the lot we chose are globally in a good state and do not need any renovation. The shops are open and running. There is a well kept vegetable garden, but the rest of the green area is unoccupied. A private alleyway crossing the parcel is open to the public during the day, and frequently used. Concrete or stone walls give structure to the lot on the east and west sides. This project proposes a ÂŤ light densification Âť of the lot. This means we decided to maintain and emphasize the non-motorized circulations, to respect the historical cadastral plan, to use a typology which respects its surroundings, and to preserve the existing buildings as much as possible. Three new houses are built, under two different designs. Common parts are organized around a shared garden, along with a small shop to share and stock the products coming from urban agriculture. A bioclimatic greenhouse is added to the existing house.

We based our architectural approach on three principles. « Ensemble » (together), because the inhabitants are the principal driving force of their neighbourhood, an advantage we want to benefit from. « En terre, » (made of earth) because the material would be very relevant in the Blosne, and because we are personally convinced of its qualities. « Enchanteur » (enchanting), because we want to re-enchant this neighbourhood, which can’t seem to shake off its bad reputation.

This project offers to redesign the garden and build earthmade facilities in the neighbourhood of the Blosne, behind the Triangle metro station. The program is organized around the theme of urban alimentation, from its production to its degradation. The project is divided into three areas : « le Coeur d’artichaut » (the artichoke heart, the shared garden and what surrounds it), « le Croque-monsieur » ( transportation interface) and « le Piment », (the pepper, where school and associations meet).

The urban tree-filled “promenade” is interrupted by the parking lots in this square. Our first and most important goal is to re-establish a transversal axis to restore this continuity.

The layout of this place will also be defined by the transportation system. We will consider not only the public transports such as the bus stops and the metro station, but also the cars, by connecting the parking to the road.
[1] Finally, by re-establishing this axis, we also valorise it and plant it. We aim to create a stroll through a central space that will be able to host a small market as well as other public events.

The use of vegetation throughout our project is not hazardous, but the result of a large research work leading to the design of several landscape sections. Several atmospheres succeed one another all along the path, and allow us to rediscover a great number of local edible plants.

We wished to design real gardens, in other words spaces that have clear limits without being closed, defined but penetrable, in the continuity of the path.

TO EXPERIMENT The earth constructions are a huge part of the built patrimonial of Brittany, whether ancient like the farms and manors made of cob observable around Rennes, or contemporary, like numerous architects projects today that are re-discovering this material. Building in cob in the Blosne would therefore be an homage to its rural and agricultural past. To multiply the earth constructions would also allow to set up training about the methods of earth building and to galvanize the local economy. As a matter of fact, 80% of the construction industry workers of Rennes are living in this neighbourhood, a lot of them lacking proper training, and very interested in supporting a sustainable way of building. Finally, the earth is a cheap material, and perfect for opening the work sites to the public, thus allowing to gather the inhabitants around a collaborative project, made by them, for them. The earth is generous : economical, ecological and esthetical. For this project, we analysed the material gathered on site, and verified its ability to construction. We realized a series of tests in the labs of an engineers school, and finally validated the possibility of using this earth with the cob method to erect our project’s buildings.
