Mariemont High School, It is hard to believe we have come to the end of the school year and our annual Recognition Day. I know this is not the type of recognition program we had hoped for this year, but I am proud of our school community for the way we have handled this unprecedented time. All of the award presentations and recognitions in this book are the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to your studies, sports, arts and extra-curricular activities. I am very proud of each and every student who is being recognized this year. To the graduating class of 2020, while your senior year has certainly been unorthodox, you have all made the best of your circumstances. I know each and every one of you has incredible things in store and I cannot wait to watch as your futures unfold. Thank you for giving your all to Mariemont High School. For your time, your gifts and your spirit, you have left your mark here and we will be forever changed because of your contributions. We will miss you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Renner Mariemont High School Principal
Cum Laude SOCIETY The Cum Laude Society was founded in order to encourage high standards of scholarship in secondary schools of the United States. Mariemont High School is proud to recognize 24 members of the senior class who have maintained a 4.0 GPA or higher for four years in college preparatory courses and who have demonstrated exemplary academic performance through standardized tests. MHS is strictly limited to the top 20% of the senior class based on enrollment. The symbol of the Society is a bronze cross with the name of the Society inscribed upon it, Cum Laude, with praise. The founders of the Cum Laude Society have chosen three Greek words as a motto by which to express the ideals of the Society. The first word in the motto is “Ahretay” which means excellence. The second word is “Dikay” which means justice. The third word is “Teemay” which means honor. Inspired by this motto, let each of you go forth to the university or college of your choice, proud witnesses to the learning and knowledge which Mariemont High School has offered you and which you so eagerly accepted. The congratulations of the administration, faculty and student body go with you!

Sports Recognitions The Ohio High School Athletics Association (OHSAA) annually presents each school with two recipients of the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award. Archie Griffin, an Ohio native, played football at Ohio State University and was the first two-time recipient of the Heisman Trophy. Throughout his professional career with the Cincinnati Bengals, Mr. Griffin always displayed sportsmanship, integrity and ethics. Mariemont High School annually recognizes two student athletes in the name of Norman “Doc” Kusel who coached more than two generations of Mariemont Athletes in football, basketball and track from 1939-1975. He had 287 wins in basketball, including a state title, and 32 track athletes in the state track meet. He was the first inductee into the Mariemont Athletic Hall of Fame, which bears his name along with the football stadium. He is a member of the Hamilton County Coaches Hall of Fame, the Ohio Track Coaches Hall of Fame and the Buddy LaRosa’s Sports Hall of Fame. He was truly “Mr. Mariemont”. This year’s selections have excelled on the fields and courts of competition and have been selected by a vote of all varsity head coaches. The OHSAA also recognizes two student athletes each year with the OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award in recognition of their academic and athletic excellence. There is a formula which accounts for academic and athletic excellence to select the athletes. This year’s recipients have led their teams on the field and in the classroom and are also finalists for the Southwest Ohio District Athletic Board’s scholar-athletes scholarships.
