Expeditions provide students with exciting, innovative learning opportunities most Fridays during the school year. Students will choose four Expeditions, each meeting from 1-3 p.m. on four consecutive Fridays. All Expeditions are hands on, ungraded and focus on lighting a spark of student interests.

Expeditions categories are:

All of the Expeditions offered during the 20192020 school year are listed in this guide. Each of the five Expedition categories - The Wellness Warriors, The Futurists, The Creators, The Global Learners and the Young Professionals - focuses on a different area of learning.

THE WELLNESS WARRIORS Fitness • Health • Sports Archery Have you ever wondered what it would be like to shoot a bow and arrow? Does target archery sound like fun? Come get an introduction to the world of Olympic archery. Focus on accuracy, personal safety, range safety, etiquette and safe use of the equipment. Get some target practice and spark a new passion! Camp “Fired” Cooking This outdoor Expedition will teach you how to prepare culinary delights using campfires built and maintained by you. Each week will have a theme where you will be challenged to test your culinary skills while cooking some of your favorite dishes as well as discovering new innovative ways of preparing common foods over the campfire. Yum! Fitness Factory Dance Turn your workout into a dance party with Dance Factory Fitness! A high-intensity dance cardio class featuring DJ-mixed music. You will not only learn some simple and fun backup dancer-style moves but will also get a great workout and learn about proper fitness techniques, hydration and nutrition and what it takes to make it as a successful group fitness instructor, personal trainer and professional dancer. Hip Hop Camp Bring your skills to the dance floor in this upbeat and adventurous Expedition! Explore breakdancing, pop, and other awesome dance moves! This class is for all levels of experience and we promise a great time!

Ice, Ice, Baby Do you love ice skating, broomball, or curling? This Expedition allows students to fall in love with the ice and explore new and old ice favorites. This session is sure to impress with plenty of laughs, and maybe even a few falls.

International Dance and Culture Do you love learning about different cultures and music? Do you love to bust a move? In this Expedition, we will have the opportunity to do just that! With so many different musical influences, such as Bollywood, Latin music, Celtic music, and many more throughout the world, there is so much to explore! In this expedition, we will dive into the cultural practices and the stories behind these dance forms and learn about their origins. Not to mention, get to learn some new moves!

Intro to Cardio/Strength Fitness Ready to get the heart pumping and those muscles working? In this Expedition, students will sample different types of cardio or strength programs, such as cardio circuit, body pump, tabata and spin core. NEW THIS YEAR – want to increase your vertical jump, become more explosive, or improve your first step? We will add some speed, agility and power classes to this Expedition. No experience required, all levels welcome! Bring your water bottle! Intro to Mind/Body Strength Looking for the total mind/body fitness routine? In this Expedition, you will sample different types of programs that improve flexibility and strength, such as stretching, Pilates and BARRE. No experience required, all levels welcome!

Intro to Racket Sports In this Expedition, you will be introduced to, learn about and play racket sports such as tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball. Any level of experience with any or all of the racket sports is welcome!

Intro to Sports Medicine Thinking about a future in sports medicine? Come learn more about what it takes to keep athletes safe, healthy and performing at their best. In this Expedition, you will get hands-on training and practice the tasks athletic trainers and sports medicine staff do on a regular basis for their athletes. Also offered as a The Young Professionals Expedition

Lets Get Fit This Expedition encourages young men and women to build healthy lifelong habits! This adventure will focus on nutrition, body-weight exercises, stretching and weight lifting. We will start each class with an overview of healthy eating & mindfulness habits. Then students will participate in various workout videos to explore several fitness options!

Reading Through Dance Do you love reading? Do you love to dance? This is the perfect class for you. This Expedition allows you to get your nose in a book and enjoy learning to tell stories through dance. Types of dance will include: BALLET - TAP - JAZZ - HIP HOP – ACRO Also offered as a The Global Learners Expedition

Wheelchair Basketball Learn the rules and skills you need to play wheelchair basketball. Basketball specific wheelchairs will be used throughout the program to insure that students get to experience an authentic version of this amazing sport. Each session will be taught using a team practice format that will include warm up, individual and team drills and ending with every student’s favorite, scrimmages. A strong emphasis is put on learning how a team can work together to maximize every player’s strengths and improve weaknesses. Also offered as a The Global Learners Expedition

Yoga and Mindfulness Fun, fitness & discovery! Come experience yoga and mindfulness like you never have before! Get out of your school and travel to different locations within your community to practice yoga and deeper mindfulness techniques for relaxation and personal growth. Create personal affirmations, journals and purpose boards. Empower yourself to best connect with friends, family, community and most importantly, yourself!

THE CREATORS Music • Arts • Expression • Performance Balloon Animals . . . and More The art of balloon bending is a unique and fun skill. It’s also surprisingly easy to learn! In this Expedition, you will learn how to make balloon animals, hats, flowers and light sabers. It’s sure to be a blast. The first lesson though is to get over your fear of balloons popping! Be the Art Critic

Students will visit local art museums in Cincinnati which will include the Taft Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum and Contemporary Art Museum. Students will explore and analyze various forms of art at each of these locations. Students will then pick one piece of artwork from each museum to write about. Students will choose pieces that they know nothing about and creatively write about what the story could be behind each piece of artwork (narratives, poems, etc...) Students will focus on images, time period, color, lines, mood, and texture to help tell the story. On the 4th meeting, students will tell the story of each piece of artwork according to what they think the story is behind each piece of artwork.

Ceramics 101 Travel offsite to learn to throw a clay pot or bowl on a wheel (this is harder than it looks!) Create bowls and pots and glaze them back at MJHS. Organize a sale or auction of bowls, with proceeds going to a charitable cause (Tender Mercies or The Freestore Food Bank).

Cinema Critic Do you like to critique books and movies? Does it bother you when a movie does not match the book? In Cinema Critic, we will read Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief and then watch the movie on screen. We will also consider how accurate the mythological references are in the story. Cooking 101 The best way to learn how to cook is to do it – and the best part of cooking is eating what you make! Future chefs can explore fun, easy and healthy recipes, learning the origin and flavor of ingredients, the cultures that celebrate these foods, and step-by-step instructions on how to prepare delicious dishes! Also offered as a The Young Professionals Expedition

Crafty Warriors Channel your inner creativity to become a Crafty Warrior! We will explore and create string art, learn to canvas paint and design and construct and send greeting cards. During this Expedition, you will let your imagination lead you to create a masterpiece.

Crayola Calligraphy Brush lettering is a beautiful craft that is a hot trend! In this Expedition, we will learn how to get started with brush lettering techniques using everyday Crayola markers and other art making mediums.

Electric Circuitry Students will get to learn basic circuit schematics and how to create their own electronic circuits. Students will learn how to solder electronic components together and create their own electronic devices.

From Page to Stage Do you like to act? Develop your theatre skills and talents on stage and off. This Expedition will give you training in acting, improvisation, costume, movement and voice. During the first couple of weeks we will read scripts, choose a script, try out for roles and practice. The Expedition will culminate with a final performance showcasing our collaboration. Fun With Drums Drums can talk, and they can also teach! Participants will be set up in a drum circle format with African hand drums and other percussion items, where everyone can be seen and heard. Through the music, we will learn how to listen, play in time, repeat what we hear, work as a team, and when to be silent. Through run rhythmic games, we will explore music terms, mathematical concepts, rhythmic notation, and more! Girls in STEAM Let’s hear it for the girls! Girls will participate in different STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities and explore different careers associated with STEAM. Throughout this Expedition, there will be various activities that will help girls make connections between STEAM and the real-world. How It’s Made Students will get to visit different industries and go behind the scenes. These could include factory tours, recycling plant tours, water treatment facility tours, or maybe even behind the scenes of a bowling alley. Intro to Woodworking Come and learn basic woodworking techniques along with safety methods in the workshop! You will learn how to create projects using the mini lathe, such as pens, pencils, bottle stoppers, magnifying glasses, gavels and mini bats. Make something with your own two hands!

Liquid Graphite Drawing Ready to take your drawings to a new level! Join us at the Mariemont Barn for a fun experimental class featuring the use of water-soluble graphite in pencil, stick, disk and powdered form. The resulting artworks range from the realistic to the abstract. This is a new medium and this Expedition promises to entertain and allow you to explore your inner love for art.

Music Improv Class America’s musical contribution to the world is jazz! Learn to communicate in the same language as legends like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and more! Must be able to play an instrument, but all instruments welcome! *Also offered as a The Global Learners Expedition

Multiple Media Drawing Do you love art? This Expedition will allow you an introduction into four of the primary drawing mediums, one each week: Graphite, Charcoal, Conte Pencil and Carbon Pencil. Emphasis on tool selection, care and handling of the medium, and classical and contemporary uses and techniques

Pinhole Photography Turn a closet into a darkroom, and make a camera out of a shoebox in this Expedition. You’ll learn about contrast and composition on the art side, and the exposure, chemicals and developing process on the science side. Take your own pictures with your hand-made shoebox camera.

Rock Band Have an interest in learning to play traditional rock band instruments (guitar, bass, piano, drums, maybe even sing)? This is the place for you. Join the School of Rock to learn, practice and even perform your latest #1 hit! No experience necessary, although skill on these instruments is definitely welcome. Modeled off the very popular Rock Band Master Class at Mariemont High School.

Studio Art Museum Medley Explore different artists and styles to find your own favorites, then head to the Cincinnati Art Museum to see them in person. Bring your inspiration back to create your own masterpiece in the medium of your choice (painting, drawing, printmaking, clay - you decide!)

The Art of Glass Experience science and art together while learning to work with glass as a sculpture medium. Visit Neusole Glassworks to observe and work with experts in the field. Try your hand using glass as a way to express your creativity.

Theatre, Drama, Dance Master Class Come explore the art of dance, drama, and theatre through the eyes of professionals. Students will get to work with skilled professionals from The Children’s Theatre in Cincinnati to learn, perfect and explore the wonderful world of performing arts! Students will have the opportunity to take a variety of classes with professionals! Also offered as a The Global Learners Expedition

Exploring Musical Theatre Find your own voice and sing your own song with Exploring Musical Theatre from The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati. Start the process to develop the skills to speak up and speak out through creative dramatic and vocal lessons taught by the professional staff of The Children’s Theatre. Take a chance and believe you can while getting an insider’s look at the entire theatre experience. No experience necessary! *Also offered as a The Young Professionals Expedition

Three Villages - One Artbeat Come to The Barn and go back in time exploring the unique history of the three villages in our school district: Mariemont, Fairfax, and Terrace Park. As we time travel to the past, this Expedition will delve into the historical aspects that make each village distinct. We will craft a memento representing each village’s individuality using various media. *Also offered as a The Global Learners Expedition

Breakout! Using logic and collaboration, you will be challenged with opening a locked box to find a prize. Then, you will solve a series of critical thinking puzzles in order to escape a room.

First Move Chess Chess can raise your IQ, exercise both sides of your brain, and improve your creativity and memory. Want to learn how to play or practice your competition? Join us! Learn to play chess and learn classic strategies by playing against students at your own level. Have fun, be smart, play chess!

How to Win at Everything: Game Night Style Is winning important to you? Destroy the competition on game night! Learn the basic strategies to dominate when playing a variety of classic games. From Hangman to Risk to Connect 4, no one you play will be safe from defeat!

Experience the Oaks Students will get to visit different labs at a couple of the Great Oaks Campuses. Some of these labs might be automotive labs, welding labs, heavy equipment labs, or cosmetology, culinary arts and veterinary assistance. Girls in STEAM Let’s hear it for the girls! Girls will participate in different STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities and explore different careers associated with STEAM. Whether you are thinking about being a zoologist or you just love to check out the animals, this Expedition is exactly right for you! We will go behind the scenes to explore what it takes to care for the animals in a zoo and an aquarium and maybe even get a few surprise visits from some fabulous critters! *Also offered as a The Young Professionals Expedition

Ancient Mythology Meets the Modern World What do Pyramus from the city Babylon, Romeo from the city of Verona, and Tony from West Side Story all have in common? Mythological stories and references are used all through literature, theater, film, and the modern world. Explore ways that characters and stories from ancient mythology have been used and used again throughout history, even in our modern era. Then take your turn – choose an ancient myth and retell it using a modern setting. Beginning American Sign Language Come join this Expedition for a beginner’s introduction to American Sign Language! Learn the basics of communication, important words and phrases, and how to best communicate using sign language. Then, put your learning into action to communicate in a brand new way! Do you want to make a difference in the community? Join us as we reach out to organizations all over the city to pitch in on community projects and make a change in the world.

Nature Warriors Let’s explore our natural world! Students will experience organic gardening; identify local trees, wildlife and rocks; conduct science experiments and learn to make environmentally friendly consumer choices. We will learn about alternative energy, recycling and climate change and how we can make a difference in the health of our beautiful blue planet. We are all about positive interactions with nature and other students. Passport to the World Voyage around the world without having to step on a plane! Participants will be able to ‘’visit” various countries, exploring different cultures through hands-on activities such as listening to traditional music, learning dances, making indigenous crafts, learning a new sport, and/or trying “local” foods. Students will develop global awareness and a greater appreciation for cultural diversity.

Star Wars - In our Galaxy Today Are you interested in the world of Star Wars? Do Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Rey and Kylo Ren remind you of other heroic characters? Do you understand the wisdom of Yoda as he speaks over his students and others? Join us to explore how Star Wars, in its galaxy far, far away, has connections to our galaxy today and is cutting edge in so many ways for the future.

Don’t MOCK it Until You TRI-AL It Innocent or guilty? Conviction or acquittal? Come experience what life in the courtroom is really like – not just what we see on TV or in the movies. From procedures to people in the legal system, be prepared to take part in a MJHS Bar Association Mock Trial.

Elementary School Outreach Want to visit our elementary schools and help your former teachers in their classrooms? During this Expedition, we will volunteer at Mariemont Elementary and Terrace Park Elementary. Students will participate by reading with students, displaying work on bulletin boards, helping students with their work, and leading activities.

Pastry Decorating Welcome to the world of decorating! You will be decorating cookies, cupcakes and even cakes in this Expedition. Learn different techniques and styles used by professionals that you can experiment with in your own kitchen. We will even take a trip to get a closer look on how this industry operates in a larger scale. Young Musician’s Club 7th and 8th grade orchestra students get to learn a fun program of music to perform at the Expedition showcase. Professional musicians will come in to help students learn new music in small groups and then play with students in the large group.

Reminders for selecting Expeditions: • Expeditions are designed to give students learning experiences in many different areas. It is encouraged that students select Expeditions from several (if not all) categories. • Expeditions will be offered based on student interest. Selecting an Expedition does not guarantee that it will be offered or fit in your Expedition schedule. • Make your own choices! Many Expeditions will be offered a few times throughout the year – so making the same choice as a friend doesn’t mean you’ll be in their Expedition. Pick for you! • Please rank your choices.
