I have reiterated multiple times this year, but it truly cannot be understated how incredible the Blue Ribbon distinction is for our district. Especially a district of our size. Whichever school your child is attending within our district, they are getting an award-winning education that ranks amongst the nation’s best. I am so proud of our students and staff members who make this level of excellence a reality day in and day out in each of our classrooms. Year Awards
As we close out another school year, I am filled with pride when I look back at all we accomplished over the last 10 months. In many ways, it was a history-making year for our school district!
Annual End of
Superintendent’s Update
Our biggest academic success of the school year came in September when the United States Department of Education recognized Mariemont Junior High School as a National Blue Ribbon “Exemplary High Performing” School. With this honor, Mariemont City Schools became the fourth school district in the state of Ohio to claim each of its schools is a National Blue Ribbon School.
For Mariemont City Schools, Warriors BEyond is a key component of the Mariemont Experience. This award-winning, experiential learning initiative centers on getting students outside the traditional classroom setting for hands-on, interest-based learning. The goal of Warriors BEyond is to encourage students to explore new ideas, subjects and activities beyond the traditional curriculum and open new doors to future possibilities.

In the fall we recognized students and staff for exemplary academic achievement, including seven Mariemont High School (MHS) students who were honored by the College Board and the National Merit Program, as well as a handful of staff members whose students had tremendous results on state and Advanced Placement assessments. In addition to these successes, we continued to see students participating in accelerated programs throughout our district and a high school average ACT score consistently four or five points ahead of the state and national averages.

June 2022 Work Smart. Create Experience. Embrace Growth.
Overall, Mariemont City Schools is in a stable financial position. With continued financial transparency and strong fiscal management, the district can continue to provide a nationally recognized education for its students now and into the future. Our students and their success will always be our priority.
I hope our entire Mariemont City Schools community has a great and happy summer!
Treasurer’s Update
Tom Treasurer,GolinarCFO
At the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting in May, I presented the updated five-year forecast to the Board, which is a projection of our school district’s financial performance over the next five years. The forecast is updated every six months, presented to the Board and posted on the district website. The most recent forecast shows an improved outlook as compared to the previous one presented in November 2021 due to better than predicted tax collections by the county auditor. I encourage you to visit the website for the full report and reach out to me if you have any school-finance questions as it relates to Mariemont City Schools.

Our district remains reliant on local funding to maintain the quality of education and opportunities for our students that our community expects. Yet due to the district’s strong fiscal management through the last few years, the Board of Education will not need to consider another levy request in 2022 as previously expected.
This school year we also saw record-breaking performances by students throughout the district, including over 50 award-winning musicians and 30 artists receiving honors and awards throughout the city and state. Additionally, 10 MHS students competed at the DECA International Career Development Conference with four placing among the top-10 in their respective categories, making this the most successful conference in Mariemont High School business program history. The history-making continued when the high school celebrated 11 seniors who signed letters of intent to continue their student athlete careers in college – the largest athletics signing class in our history.

I hope you have a safe and relaxing summer break and I look forward to a new school year soon!

The 2021-22 school year is going to be a hard one to beat, but I know that next year will have some incredible things in store for us. I cannot wait to see what we can accomplish together!
this list I am truly amazed. Not just by the sheer amount of records we set this year, but also by the diverse array of students and staff who are leading us to these records. From academics to art, from music to athletics and even eSports, there is something for every student in our district and that is the pinnacle of the Mariemont Experience. No matter a student’s interests or future plans, the Mariemont Experience is positioned to set our students up for success in whatever lies ahead. That can be a point of pride for everyone in our community.
I also am proud of the district’s financial standing as we wrap up the 2021-22 school year. Mariemont City Schools is in a stable place despite the challenges of the last two-plus years responding and adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, rising levels of inflation and widespread financial insecurity across the globe.
UpdateSuperintendent’s
Lastly, one of the newest teams in our district, the eSports team, brought home its first trophy after winning the 2021 Regional Championship and advancing to the state Final Four in video game
We used an intentional mix of strategic budget reductions, one-time federal COVID-19 relief funds and grant dollars to extend the lowest operating levy in our district’s history for another year. The 2.5-mil operating levy that was passed by the community in 2018 was expected to provide for the day-to-day needs of the district for four years (through the fall of 2022.)
Mariemont City Schools has continued to be recognized as an award-winning district this year and I am happy to be a part of the Warrior family. I can’t help but be proud of everything we have accomplished this year, in and out of our classrooms.
By design, our largest expenditure is the salaries and benefits for our staff members. Our faculty and staff deliver the high quality education that our community and district expects. As with many businesses in our area, staff retention remains a priority. We do our best to offer a desirable workplace with competitive wages while also maintaining a budget that is tightening due to inflationary pressures.
In 2015, the Mariemont City School District launched the Marie Huenefeld Friend of the School award to recognize individuals in the community who make significant contributions to the school district with their time, service and/or expertise to create a better experience for students. At the May Board of Education meeting, Bill Flynn was officially recognized as the 2022 recipient of the Marie Huenefeld Friend of the School award.
Bill, who is an accomplished attorney for Strauss Troy, began his time with the Mariemont City School District in 1993 when his oldest daughter entered kindergarten. His younger two children also followed through the district and he had at least one child in the schools until 2013.
During the 2006-07 school year, he took on his first committee role as a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee. Later in 2007, he also served on the community-led school levy committee which passed in November of that year.
Mrs. Colpi has worked in Mariemont City Schools for 20 years now as the media specialist overseeing the library at the high school. But throughout the last 20 years, as education changed and evolved, so did her role and her focus. With each new piece of technology that was incorporated into the classrooms, she learned and grew her expertise. She has since added technology coach to her repertoire and has recently completed over 60 hours of training to become a certified Apple Learning Coach.
The Mariemont City School District Award of Excellence is awarded annually to an individual who exemplifies dedication to and support of Mariemont City Schools. Mariemont High School librarian and digital learning coach Emily Colpi is the recipient of the 2022 Award of Excellence.

That year he also began his tenure as the Mariemont High School athletics public address announcer, spending 12 seasons working with the boys and girls soccer, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls basketball and football teams. He also volunteered his time with the Mariemont Athletic Boosters support organization and served as the group’s treasurer for four years. His dedication to Mariemont athletics and talent on the mic earned him the title of “Voice of the PerhapsWarriors.”Bill’sbiggest
contribution to the school district came in 2009 when he stepped into the role of Board of Education member. For over 10 years, he gave his time, talent and expertise overseeing our district’s operations and governance, making decisions to truly advance our district. During his Board of Education tenure, he served as Board president on several occasions, leading Mariemont City Schools to new heights. He oversaw building construction projects for all four of our school buildings and during his tenure, Mariemont Elementary was awarded a National Blue Ribbon Award, the highest honor bestowed to a school in the United States.
But her most admirable trait is that she is a fierce supporter of kids. She is an advocate for students to be exactly who they are and makes the strongest connections with students who often do not have anyone else in their corner. Mariemont City Schools is a caring place for all students and that has a lot to do with the culture that Mrs. Colpi works hard to create each and every day.
Emily Colpi Named 2022 Award of Excellence Recipient
Any high school staff member, and probably many in other buildings, can attest to the fact that she is the first person to volunteer to help teachers in any way she can. She will assist with a class project, find valid research and even turn her library into a poetry café to create unforgettable experiences for students.

Intersession Brings Mariemont Experience Full Circle from front page)
The Warriors BEyond program begins at the elementary level with Explorations, continues through the junior high with Expeditions and then transitions to Intersession and Master Class at the high school. The goal is for students to accelerate their experiential learning through their education, to use each program as a building block to continue learning, growing and expanding their interests and knowledge.
4
For students at Mariemont High School, the pinnacle of their Warriors BEyond programming comes in the form of Intersession. Intersession is a four-day immersive experience where students may choose to join a teacherled course, visit college campuses with their families, or shadow a community member in a particular job field, called an Experienceship.
Theexperience.special
thing about Intersession is that it isn’t a one-size-fits all program. It is a completely customizable experience where students have a world of possibilities in front of them and the ability to completely individualize their week to create memories that will last a lifetime.
We hope you enjoy this look back at Intersession 2022 through the eyes of our Mariemont High School students and already begin to imagine the possibilities for Intersession 2023.
For these four days in mid-May, normal programming at the high school pauses while Intersession takes students outside the campus for new adventures and new learning. The idea of Intersession is uniquely Mariemont, and one that very few other high school students across the country get to
Isabella, Sophomore - Serving Cincinnati
Brynna, Sophomore - Experienceship
Ellis, Junior – College Explorations
“Serving Cincinnati was a great opportunity to benefit my community while having a great time. Through dedicating my time to these good causes, I was able to take a break from school and use my time to help others.”
“This Intersession was definitely a huge help to my future in so many ways that I could barely even begin to explain. I would like to thank the school for giving me such an opportunity to visit these schools to actually iron out my thoughts on what I found to be important about my next level in education and what I will have to look out for in the months to come.”
“Intersession reminded me of what my main passions are and showed me different careers to correlate with them for the future.”
What They’re Saying…
Camryn, Freshman – The Finer Things Club
“I found a week to explore schools and see what I might be interested in next year extremely helpful! It definitely helped alleviate stress about picking a school in the fall!”
“I really enjoyed my experience at WLWT 5 because of the kind and welcoming atmosphere at the studio every morning. Also, I was able to do more than just shadowing, like practicing on the green screen and creating graphics used in the show, that made my experience so memorable and special.”

The ACT, which is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admission decisions, is administered to measure a high school student’s readiness
As the Mariemont City Schools’ Warriors BEyond Coordinator, Sugerman is focused on leading the district’s award-winning experiential education program for K-12 students. He has overseen the growth and expansion of the program’s flagship initiatives Expeditions, Explorations, Master Class and Intersession, among others.
He will be presented with the award at the annual NSEE Conference which will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, in September.

Brian Sugerman Named NSEE Top Educator
Daniel is a rising senior at Mariemont High School who is certainly bound for a big and bright future. Congratulations, Daniel!
For Daniel, he earned the highest score on each of the four components to complete one of the rarest feats in the country: a perfect 36 on the ACT.
At the May Board of Education meeting, Mariemont High School student Daniel Cooper was awarded the Superintendent’s Showcase award from superintendent Steven Estepp for scoring a perfect 36 on the ACT this year.
To put into perspective just how incredible this is, there were 1.3 million high school students who took the ACT in the United States in 2021. Of those students, only 4,055 scored a perfect 36. That is .31%.
for college. The test is made up of four sections of the subject areas of reading, math, science and English and each section is scored from 1-36 with the average taken to get the student’s composite score.
Brian Sugerman, the district’s Coordinator of Technology and Experiential Education, was recently named one of the top educators in the nation. The National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) selected Sugerman as the recipient of the NSEE Outstanding Leader in Experiential Education: K-12 award, which recognizes a K-12 educator who has demonstrated innovative uses of experiential learning in their classroom or school system.
