Kings Cross Community Art Center 2011 Sem 1 l Connections and Urban Repairs l Tutor: Benjamin Giles Throughout years of development, every city undergoes evolutions and various interventions; which bring both good and bad. At Kings Cross, the Cross City Tunnel is established as an eastern gateway, but at the same time; it is a damage to the history, to the place of the local community. The studio explores various strategies to repair the city damage by establishing a Hub of activities and a Visual connector across the City’s East and West.
01 Through the developing of building and spaces as the urban repair, it reinvigorates a leftover ‘non place’ surrounded by high volume of traffic, into a HUB OF ACTIVITIES

Acting as both the physical HUB of activities and a visual connector across the east and west, it links up the History: A busy commercial with the intersection of transportation.
The design of the center encourages interactions among different communities and brings the site alive through different activities there.
Today, the Sydney 2030 Vision plays a big part to the design planning. It is important to keep Sydney competitive by supporting sustainable living, arts and cultural and a friendly neighbourhood to locals and visitors.
PROGRAMS
In order to faciliate the connections and activities among the tourists/ locals /families / people working nearby, the HUB is designed with urban farms, cycling track to the view deck, public squares/ plaza, retails, entertainment, dining, exhibitions, galleries and spaces for artists.

The project complies with the understanding of design complying with regulations, which it satisfies the SEP65 (residential) and acoustics preformances (Jazz Club). The site is located in Coogee, with a heritage house at the back of the lot. It is important to also consider the back side to create an intimate environment sharing in-between.

Academic Hybrid as Connector 2012 Sem 1 + Sem 2 [Graduation Studio] l architectus TM Studio l Tutor: Ivan Ip In years, Sydney successes as both a financial and a popular tourist spot in the Asia Pacific. However, this “Global City� is becoming a fragmented, polarized city as the level of wealth has been increasingly concentrating. Eventually, would become a luxury. The studio addresses the goals of the Sydney Vision 2030 through the design of hybrid. It explores solutions on maintaining Sydney to be a globally competitive, cultural and creative city; while creating a sustainable and vibrant community for the locals. The hybrid challenges the typical commercial/ mixed-use tower, it potentially brings the attention towards the urban complexity and connectivity of them through balancing the work, live and leisure aspects. By utilizing the vertical tower typology and the hybridity of programs, it gives the opportunities of accommodating both the commercial and leisure activities within high value land in Sydney.

The “Connector” acts as the node of the community by encouraging and sustaining a wide range of functions and simply everyday activities to connect the fragments of the place’s identity, the people and the environments; and to create a harmony with the urban fabric and the area.

It is to be differentiated itself from the mixeduse by not only serving the private, but to also communicating with the city by encouraging both the planned and unplanned activities and interactions to take place.

02 HYBRID AND THE CITY
It is to recognize that “city” does not absolutely refer as a physical town. If the City is to be viewed in once physical existence, it should be “expressed in a vortex of temporal relations, mirrored in the activities of a collective body of individuals interacting with one another. Cities are an open stage for complementary and conflicting encounters, and allow for multiple identities to emerge and evaporate. It is vital that “As individuals pass through, new connections arise while others fade away. By wearing various masks and playing different roles, people change the urban landscape as they encounters.”[2]

Hybrid is to be read as the idea of ‘Open, Compact City within a City’. With Rem Koolhaas first addressed this idea as the ‘culture of congestion’, hybrid is an urban block that consists of programs which contribute to different functions. It is the activities acting as the medium, creating a sense of community that become the “nodes and connections” [1] to interface with the City, which responses and vitalizes the urban complex of the area.

The intention of the project is to provide the potential medium to generate a densely uses urban space for connecting different inhabitants starting from simply everyday activities that would be taken place. The ideas of ‘Connector’ does not purely regard as generating the means for physical connection, but to also connect the fragments of the place’s identity, the people and the environments; and to create a harmony with the urban fabric and the area.

Design is to address the issues creatively. It is to drive the solution, the problem solving for not only the current, but also the future; and is not only for the individuals but for everyone. The following are the potential visions that could have achieved in this site: 1. Increase the connectivity and the provision of the sustainable harbour as a civic spot/ activity hub (encourage cycling/ walking); 2. Maintain Sydney as a globally competitive and lively city through the integration of offices, accommodation, leisure/ entertainment and communities facilities; 3. Support/ enriching the diversity of Cultural ribbona1 by further exploring different types of cultural (film, music and sound)

05 DIVERSITY TOWARDS A BETTER CITY
To create the linkage with the area, it is significant to address the social trends and issues in the society; as a social condenser, it is to reignite the connectivity of communities in the area. Thinking on the level of the city area as a whole, it is essential to articulate the design with the Sydney Vision 2030. On the individual level, the studies on work life balance (WLB) and the position of LEISURE in lives provide the insight on how the hybrid can become the medium to develop the common language within the city. In which, the WLB always stays on the discussion list, with the increasing of work hours that decreases the involvement in families and leisure time arrangements (communications among families members/ childcare); and how flexibilities in offices (arrangement of office work spaces/ flexible working hours) with the provision of leisure (leisure in workplace/ breakout zones/ activities in individual leisure time) are one of the strategies to maintain a better quality and balance in life.

The site is located at the Coogee Oval next to the Coogee Beach, which the existing old centre and Grand Stand have not been used for many years. Respecting to the historical values of the Old Grand Stand to the community, the design is the first taste on integrating the heritage with its own design.

By interweaving with imaginations, this project tries to dissect the motif and create a unique narrative to the piece of art as the project brief. Documentation Techniques for Major Buildings o Documentation Techniques for Major Buildings 2011 Sem 2 l Tutor: Aaron Ballin In practice, documentation plays a significant role during the construction phase. It is the architects’ main communication with other consultants in the project team. This elective introduces the basic techniques; such as detailing, construction, materials and finishings. The individual project requires each student to produce the whole set of basic drawings and extra details upon student’s decision which complies with the Standards Australia (AS) and the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

2013 is the year for celebrating the Canberra 100th birthday. Back in 1912, architect Walter Burley Griffin and his wife; architect Marion Mahony Griffin from Chicago; together won the international competition to design the capital city of Australia. In 1913, the capital city was named as Canberra and built according to Griffin’s modified plan. However, throughout the years, their ideal city did not turn fully into reality.

CAPITheticAL Competition Entry Stage 2 2012 Sem 2 l Tutor: Dr. Paola Favaro l Team Member: Carolyn Cheung, Marieta Ng, Winnie Sheung Vision for Canberra: An elaboration of Stage 1 The 3 main strategies focused in Stage 2: 1. “Centennial axis”: a world expo forum for the study of the 21st century city 2. “Centennial water walk pavilions”: a testing ground for innovative educational and leisure activities 3. “Centennial water wheel”: a viewing platform and water recycling facility; an educational showcase for the country In our drawings, a carefully planned approach frames the three projects: the “Centennial Axis”, a permanent World Expo Forum for international workshops and exhibitions related to the 21st century cities, leads the rest of the development around the Lake, linking it to the “Centennial Water Walk Pavilions” and the “Centennial Water Wheel”. The symbolic and spiritual tension of Griffins’ plan created by the underlying concept of an architectural horizontal city immersed within the nature of the existing and man-made bush land would be elevated by the horizontal geometries and proportions of our proposed urban architecture. The three experimental projects will celebrate the best architectural gestures found in Canberra, which, arguably, are the living testimony of the Griffins’ legacy.

Australia + New Zeland Student Architecture Congress July 2011 Adelaide
Flux was the Student Architecture Congress held in Adelaide back in July, 2011. The congress theme was to examine the role of architects under various crisis. Throughout various intensive workshops/ lectures/ tours held in 3 days; the congress gave students and professions to meditate the importance of humanitarian needs in natural disaster, financial crisis and climate change. Guests shared their ideas with the audience on how the industry could contribute to the needs, especially during post-crisis/ disaster relief.

Re:Hab was the Student Architecture Congress held in Canberra back in July, 2009. The congress theme was to examine the contemporary issues and the future responsibilities of the architects. During various workshops/ lectures/ tours in 5 days; the congress brought up the discussions on architecture education, the social responsibilities of architects; and the definition of “Hero Architects�, just to name a few. The Congress brought together students and professions and enabled the industry to understand other public projects that were happeneing.

TIMEo Time flies, don’t let time runs away, catch it and use it wisely.
Time, is an individual assignment of Cinematic Space, a course taken in 2011. This course allows us to explore the interrelationship between the cinematic and architectural experiences. They both are an expression of art that create and define experiences of places and space. This short film uses the journey of marbles travelling along various places; to communicate the ideas,
“Time is Money”. It aims to convey the idea of experiencing different challenges in life to the audiences. Eventually, the “key” uniquely links up the interweaved time and spaces. The process of chasing the marbles and picking up the “key” symbolize catching the time by oneself. The alarm in the film guides the audiences to realize that they should not let time to pass meaninglessly.

01. Tries to wake up and switch off the alarm but failed. While the glass of water on the side was accidentially tippied over. 02. When the water turns into marbles, the audiences are brought into the dream through this clue. 03. 04. The marbles run over the edge. This indicates the start of their journey. 05. A reminder to the audiences that the water has been turned into marbles. 06. Water in the character’s hand has turned into marbles and dropped onto the floor while she is asleep and not noticing the situation. 07. The marble journey: travel from indoor to outdoor through a grey corridor with repeated columns on the side. 08. It runs till to the stairs at the end of the alley and terminates at the last step. 09. The character chases after the marble and finally she pickes it up.

10. It shows to the audiences that the picked up marble has been transformed to a key. 11. The clock illustrates the time reverse with the background frames playing back the past events. 12. The alarm rings again and displays only one minute has passed in realtiy. Hence it is a clue to show the chasing of marble is just a dream. 13. One might puzzle about the “key” in the dream as it appears in the character’s hand realistically. (The “key” is the symbol of time. It expresses that the character finally realizes that “Time is Money”.) 14. The white curtain and opened windows, indicate the character’s new insight towards life. 15. Trees under the sun (views looking out from windows) represent the rebirth of the character. 16. Final message of the film followed by the credit screen.
