N CK GE LFUSS ’07 You may recognize Nick Gehlfuss ’07 as Dr. Will Halstead from NBC’s hit show Chicago Med. At Marietta College, we remember him performing in the 24-Hour Play Festival and The Master’s Boy.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre, Marietta College, 2007

“Before college, acting was fun,” Nick said. “During my time at Marietta College, I learned how to respect the craft and chose to make a career out of it.” Nick, who was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumnus honor, has also appeared on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Longmire, The Newsroom, The Good Wife and Royal Pains. Of course, he’s also appeared in cross-over roles on Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Master of Fine Arts in Acting, University of MissouriKansas City, 2009

After college, Nick moved to New York City, performing in plays and paying his dues. He has regularly told the story of taking his guitar out onto the streets to make extra money — and being able to buy a plate of spaghetti, meatballs and sausage for $1.50. “I’ve come a long way since then; but those days, the struggle of the beginning of everything, is where you find out what you’re made of and certainly the most interesting days,” he said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Big break came on TV series Army Wives in 2010

Nick said landing a leading role in a successful TV series is a dream come true, but it also gives him some flexibility. “I can now choose to do small plays, or take a role in a theater, and I don’t have to worry about how much money I’m getting paid,” Nick said. “I can do it because I love the part or it’s something I want to do.” Stars as Dr. Will Halstead on NBC’s Chicago Med

He graduated from West Virginia University’s School of Dentistry in 2015 and is now a local dentist. “While the accessibility of my academic professors at Marietta College was priceless in preparing me for the challenge of my graduate program, the experience in meaningful leadership roles on campus prepared me to manage my team while practicing dentistry. The whole dream came fullcircle when I came back to Marietta to start my career.”

She earned her Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University and she is a member of Reed Smith’s Business and Finance Department. “The combination of these programs, with the problem solving skills and industry knowledge I learned though my minor in petroleum engineering, prepared me well for the challenges of law school and my current position with Reed Smith LLP.”

Rachel Stahl ’17 Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine Columbus, Ohio Rachel earned a Bachelor of Science degree Biochemistry and she is expected to complete her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from The Ohio State University in 2021. Connecting the dots is something Phil York ’10 has always felt was one of his biggest strengths. After graduating from Marietta and while attending graduate school, Phil started to focus on a career path that included non-profit organizations. He quickly surmised that non-profits need robust and focused fundraising to flourish. Since then he has successfully spearheaded fundraising efforts from Texas to Washington, D.C. “I started by doing some volunteering at non-profits when I was in graduate school, and I was fortunate enough to secure some big grants, including one for $300,000 for a local health clinic.” He leveraged that experience to secure his first job as the Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity in Waco, Texas. “I was attracted to the job because I knew that home ownership wasn’t something that was free, and I loved the mission of the organization.” Phil also knew that Habitat was a global brand that could eventually lead him back home to Frederick, Maryland. In 2016, he returned to Maryland as the Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County. He has also served as a Development Manager for National Children’s Alliance and Manager of Designated Campaigns for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Bachelor of Arts in Political Science Marietta College, 2010

Master of Public Administration Texas A&M University College Station, Texas

Joined Habitat for Humanity as the Director of Development in Waco, Texas, in 2014

In 2020, he was named Development Manager for the National Community Reinvestment Coalition in Washington, D.C. “I have no doubt my time at Marietta College helped prepare me and is why I have realized this arc in my career. One tool in particular is the ability to learn. It sounds cliché, but that is a competitive advantage. It wasn’t until I saw it in action that I understood. From Habitat for Humanity to the Kennedy Center, you wouldn’t think someone with a Political Science degree should be doing fundraising for those organizations. But I could always pick up a book and learn how to speak to the people who are passionate about housing or the arts. Knowing how to prioritize based on my audience is what is most important.”

“I am extremely grateful for how well my time at Marietta prepared me for this next step. The professors in all the departments I have been a part of — English, Political Science and Leadership — have constantly made themselves accessible to offer advice and guidance throughout not only my classes here, but also the process of figuring out what my next step would be.”

CH D WALK R ’10 Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training, Marietta College, 2010

Chad Walker ’10 thought he had the perfect job. Having just completed his seventh year as an assistant athletic trainer at Arizona State University and working with the Sun Devils’ new hockey program, Walker and his wife, Becca Holzworth Walker ’10, were happy to stick around Tempe. “Becca was teaching and I loved what I was doing. I always wanted to work for a major Division I program, but then an opportunity with the San Diego Gulls [a minor league hockey team] came available.”

Master of Education, Arizona State University, 2013, Tempe, Arizona

One day after interviewing for the job, Chad found out Becca was pregnant with their first child — Jackson. Chad nearly turned down the job, but Becca convinced him it would work. After a year with the Gulls, the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks promoted Chad in July 2018, and he’s now an assistant athletic trainer. Sam Crowther, former Chair of Marietta College’s Sports Medicine program, caught up with Chad when the Ducks played in Columbus against the Blue Jackets.

Left Arizona State to become Head Athletic Trainer with the San Diego Gulls, 2017

“I am very proud of Chad on what he has accomplished since leaving Marietta College,” Crowther said. “While at Marietta, Chad wasn’t one of our top students academically but he was clinically. He made the most of every opportunity and demonstrated a strong work ethic.” Now Chad travels around North America to locations like Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Philadelphia over a seven-day stretch. “It’s tough, especially with a young child, but I am the luckiest person I know.”
