INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE Marietta City Schools is one of only a few school districts in North America and the Caribbean authorized to provide International Baccalaureate (IB) instruction from kindergarten through 12th grade. Grades K-5: IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)
PYP at Sawyer Road Elementary educates the whole child by providing a comprehensive, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. While incorporating local, state, and national curriculum requirements as well as the arts and world language, the PYP reaches beyond minimum standards to provide a rich, intensive education. All of the students at Sawyer Road Elementary receive IB PYP instruction.
Grades 6-10: IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)
MYP at the Marietta Sixth Grade Academy, Marietta Middle School, and Marietta High School provides an academically challenging Program that encourages all students to understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and to become critical and reflective thinkers.
Grades 11-12: IB Diploma Programme (IB DP)
Students who complete the Pre-DP Program and receive an MYP Certificate after tenth grade may then be considered for admission into the IB Diploma Program. IB DP is a comprehensive and rigorous academic Program with final examinations that prepare students for success at the university level and beyond. The IB Diploma Program’s original purpose was to facilitate the international mobility of students by providing schools with a curriculum and qualification recognized by universities around the world. Since its founding in 1968, the IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual achievement.
Grades 11-12: IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP)
As an alternative to the traditional IB DP course of study, students may choose to engage in career-related learning while maintaining the IB vision, rigor, high standards and principles.
Community Involvement
At all levels, IB students are expected to take learning beyond the classroom and participate in community service projects. PYP students participate in a variety of student-led projects, both in and out of class and through the World Exploration Club. MYP students are encouraged to complete between 10-20 hours helping others and volunteering. Within the IB DP and IBCC, students must complete extra-curricular activities devoted to planning, implementing and executing community-focused projects.
E
(IB) WORLD SCHOOL DISTRICT The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) is an advanced course of study that seeks to develop students into inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB curriculum complements the Common Core and Georgia Performance Standards, and is guided by an international organization that works with schools and governments worldwide to develop a challenging, global education.
Why Choose IB?
• Increased engagement in social, academic, emotional and intercultural experiences • Improved critical thinking, writing, test scores, and ability to manage time and challenges • Deeper understanding of how global cultures are interconnected • Opportunity to earn early college credits • A more thorough understanding of one’s own strengths and weaknesses • Increased self-confidence • Higher potential to pursue advanced careers • A greater chance of receiving monetary scholarships. (Over the past five years, over $11M in scholarships were offered to MHS IB Diploma Candidates (excluding HOPE), an average of over $55,000 per student) • Respect of college admissions staffs. Universities and colleges worldwide recognize IB as a standard of excellence, and our IB graduates have been accepted into prestigious colleges such as Yale, MIT, Dartmouth, University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Duke, Emory, NYU, UNC - Chapel Hill, Stanford, Edinburgh University (UK), and many more. • Better college performance.
DID YOU KNOW? Many international companies choose to locate in cities with an IB school because of the Programme’s excellent global reputation.
