AIRPORT AND TRAIN STATION CONNECTION

MILAN BERGAMO AIRPORT (BGY) | ORIO AL SERIO, ITALY

In the era of a globalized economy and highly dynamic competition for economic activities around the world, airports increasingly represent themselves as the most strategically important transport infrastructures. Their attractiveness and impact on the city depend on their accessibility, which is highly affected by the quality of connections, mainly railway connections. The project aims at improving through design, the unbalanced and rigid movement patterns when it comes to railway accessibility in airports, by focusing on the user’s needs and preferences which can be assisted by AI. People have different needs when using public transport and airports, and that is why flexible and adaptable infrastructures need to be present. Integrating AI in airports, particularly the connections between railways and airports, means analyzing, observing, and experimenting with current present conditions and challenges, and through a combination of digital and physical interaction, to propose a solution for the future.

MilanBergamoAirportwasselectedasaprojectsite, since it holds a strong potential for improving its accessibility, and also has future plans for building a railway connection to the airport, the project Treno per Orio. A new 5km rail is planned to connect Bergamo Airport with Bergamo FS, but also improve the connection of the airport with the city of Milan since the same rail can be used to reach the airport from the city of Milan. The project will significantly improve airport accessibility, but also offer other urban connections.

Current Accessibility

Orio al Serio airport can be currently accessed either by car or by bus, at the moment, no railway connection is present. If reaching the airport by car, the A4 freeway is used, along which the airport is located. Proposing a train station meant also to introduce a connecting volume between the train station and the terminal building, more precisely, a connection to the gates located on the first floor. The design proposal focuses on a multimodal hierarchy while prioritizing the passenger’s doorto-gate experience.

The idea and goal were to respect the current condition and airport layout, which has a car-oriented environment, as can be seen in the current state masterplan. The functions introduced respond to the different needs of the passengers, having a flexible, multifunctional, and adaptable character.

The train station is located at the underground level, while the connecting volume is located on the first floor, attached to the terminal building. Leaving a breathable and free ground floor offered better circulation for the passengers, but also busses and cars. Besides the design of the connection between the airport and the train station, also other several interventions were done, in order to create a user-oriented connection and a car-free area.

For reaching the goal of the project, data is needed from two sources. In order for the data to be useful, there has to be a connection and collaboration between such two sources, the airport sensor network and the users output. The protocol used to connect airport data and users data will depend on the specific systems being used. In general, any data provided, filtered, or generated by AI can be managed, collected, and exchanged between different sources by using the protocols mentioned, API, EDI, GTFS, or Web Services.

Data Connection

AI is used as a tool that will process the data of passengers’ preferences, and offer a suitable route depending on their needs and input. The idea is to develop an AI platform, which can communicate with the passengers through an app, suggesting which route to take considering the passenger’s preferences and amount of people present in the airport. AI complements the design and assists the user and understands its needs, after which generates a personalized movement route.

CRITICS|DI VITA STEFANO, LEMES DE OLIVERA STEFANO COLLABORATORS|A. DANIIL, R. H. SALET, P. L. LO

Planned for the Milano Cortina 2026, Winter Olympic games, the project aims at responding to the current but also upcoming demands and needs of the project site area, considering also on a bigger scale. Since Milan would be one of the clusters for the Olympic games, two project sites were proposed, the one of Porta Romana and the one of Santa Giulia. The focus was put on Porta Romana, however, along the process of designing, the importance of both areas was analyzed and observed.

One city system considered was the one connecting the two areas, represented as a transect, cutting diagonally through the city of Milan and strongly stating a relationship between Santa Giulia - Porta Romana - the center of Milan. The second city system is one of the so-called green belt, running as a ring-shaped configuration of green spaces. The intersection of both systems, is the Porta Romana area, acting as a gate along the transect and a chain element in the green belt. The project strongly aims at improving four main elements which are the presence of bike lanes, green spaces, transportation, and activity\landmark. A logical and practical blend between the four would optimize the conditions and also improve the quality of the area.

Mobility was considered to play an important role since such event would increase the needs and demand for transport, movement of people, and interactions. Therefore, using the already existing connectivity potential of Porta Romana, additional points were introduced which would strengthen the mobility, combined with the presence of bike lanes. Regarding the idea of landmarks, the known and already existing Fondazione Prada is imagined to form a cultural and business environment together with the A2A tower (under construction). For such reason, a third landmark is proposed, which would enforce the idea of attractiveness but also its visual aspect. As already mentioned the purpose and usage, the functions introduced are of a different variety, mainly being apartments that would temporarily host the athletes, and later be transformed into residential units. Besides this, commercial and cultural functions are also proposed, which can be transformed into spaces for small activities of the Olympic Games.

Metrolines

An analysis of the current bike lanes in the city of Milan was done, to understand the condition of the project site, compared to the city scale. It was noticed that the zone of interest lacks the presence of bike lanes, and acts as a void in the overall system. Therefore the second element considered crucial to improve and implement in the project were the bike lanes. The idea is to propose primary and secondary bike lanes, the primary one is proposed to run through the project site, while the secondary ones are planned also outside the project site. This approach would improve the movement and the mobility aspect in the area, also allowing a more interactive and sustainable flow of the movement of the people. Of course, this element will be integrated with the idea of introducing green areas, for continuing the green belt.

It was crucial and necessary to analyze the condition of the open and green spaces along the axis, in order to understand its obisticles, branches and barriers which are not of an advantage of rthe flow along it. Noticeable is that the are of project site acts as a barrier, but also offered a lot of potential based on the presence of walkable links around it, which can improve the green connection. Therefore, another element taken strongly into consideration was introducing green space along the project site, which would connect the belt, and also offer zones of activities and gatherings.

Looking at the mobility systems, it was clear to conclude that the project site besides acting as a void in the connectivity of bike lanes, also has the potential for being a node zone for the metro and railways systems. This idea comes from the fact that the site is an intersection of two different city systems, located in between the center of Milan and the Santa Giulia area. Therefore, the proposed is to improve the mobility systems in terms of increasing the presence of secondary nodes, but also introducing the node of Porta Romana, a landmark with a square which would make it more attractive and communicative.

NEW COMMUNITIES FOR THE CITY OF YAZD MULTIFUNCTIONAL COMPLEX | YAZD, IRAN

The city of Yazd, Iran, holds remarkable importance, both in its history, anditsculturalvalue.Thediversityofthebuildingtypologies and their urban configuration, rises from the long history of the city, as it had undergone political and cultural changes. Accordingly, old, intermediate, and new urban fabrics are present in the city. These aspects were translated to the language of the design and taken as an inspiration for the strategy developed, arriving at the end with a blend of different grid arrangements. What regards the cultural value, strongly respected was the northeast border of the project site, Dowlat Abad Garden, a UNESCO protected heritage site. Therefore, the proposal offers a more interactive and social composition on this side, a spine of “corner buildings”, each one of them hosting a different function and activity. In order to emphasize even more the heritage site, and to reflect it in the design, and agricultural urban garden is integrated, on the northwest border. The final project proposal is inspired by these two dominant factors, the historical and the cultural value. Placed in between the two important elements, are the residential units planned for the citizens of Yazd. The complex offers a variety of different apartment sizes, for different family compositions. Highly respected was the privacy along the design process, therefore there is a rhythm of private and public streets along the grid. Every two strips of residential blocks are enclosed by a corner building, which is communicating on the other side to the Garden and the people. This approach secures privacy and sets a border between the private and public zones, still, the composition of residential strips + corner buildings work as a whole. Finally, the north part of the project has a cultural center introduced, acting as a finishing point for the corner buildings but also as an attraction point for the pedestrian boulevard on the east side.

A house for a collector is an exceptional chance to design a unique piece of built environment that accommodates sophistication, metaphorical meaning behind the design and hidden desires of its owner. The building is divided into three parts of The Past, The Present and eventually The Future. Each part is strictly differentiated by the type of the structure, materiality, typology and program. The site is armed with thick wall – a reminiscence of preexisting structure. The existing ruins are appreciated as a historical reference not for itself but rather as an opportunity of new interpretations – an alternative history. The building is elevated from the ground not to particularly praise the ruins nor liberates from it. Being extracted from the obvious constrains. It allows the collector to start new beginning. The new beginning is simply established. New ground – a platform – allows collector to start a new chapter of unrestricted dreams. The transition between Past, Present and Future represent cycle of life.

The Past Part is composed as a directed experience based on idea of compression and release. This part of the building might be open to the public to provide events and exhibition space. The visitor is guided through the ramp and long corridor that narrows down (compression) to spatially explode in a big half-spheric room (release). The series of rooms are gradually changing the shape from round to rectangular as well as its size to provide different type of compression. Each room has an opening that connects public space above with the underground part allowing both visitors and a casual passerbys to have a visual connection.

Co-workingspaces

The project is located in the Japanese city of Nagoya, in the heart of the old city’s grid of “Goban-wari“, close to the historical castle of Nagoya. The site, an 80 x 90 meters block, is imagined as a mixed-use complex with commercial spaces, offices, co-working spaces, and residential apartments composed of social and medium-high classes. Logically, the ground floor is composed of spaces dedicated to commercial functions, since the block is opened on all four sides toward roads of a busy frequency. The first and second floors offer office and co-working spaces, with clear double-sided transparency. The residential unit is resting on top of the functions mentioned, performing as the main player in the composition. This logic is followed in the formation of the building, although still them being unified as one whole complex. Particular attention was paid to the orientation of the volumes since the goal was to optimize solar exposure and sustainability. The idea of delivering renewable energy was put on focus, making sure the complex is of high energy efficiency.

The construction of the complex is hybrid, composed of reinforced concrete and CLT, which answers to the local traditions of Japan, but also the sustainability issues. Another factor that played a role in approaching the design with two different construction techniques, is also the functions. Since the commercial and office floor are of public behavior, it would mean more transparency and communication in between volumes was proposed. On the other hand, the residential units are treated with a more enclosed and private approach.

Three of the four residential blocks are composed of apartments facing double orientation, while the tower, necessitated by the requirements in the number of units, is composed of smaller apartments. The 45-degree orientation in relation to the North makes sure that no apartment is left without proper sunlight.

The ground floor is of commercial use, it is a simple extrusion of the site, forming a garden in the middle.

The first floor is composed of office spaces, which share a common interactive platform, which unifies the spaces of the different building units.

The typical floor shows the apartments, all of the facing both sides of the facades, creating a more private side towards the inner courtyard, and a more acitve one towards the street.

Structure and materiality

It starts with a reinforced concrete columns and core systems, with the support of the slanted columns which pierce the revolving volumes, as to minimize the cantilever distance. The slab of the third floor is a thick waffle system slab, which carried the load of the CLT systems on the upper parts and distributes it equally. The CLT system works with the support of load bearing walls, places traversaly as the division between apartments.

The commercial floor offers a common platform which can be shared among the buildings, creating a more interactive environment, and also forming an inner courtyard on the ground floor.

HVAC

Regarding the heating and the cooling of the building, they are managed by a Geothermal system which offers great efficency. The heat pumps are distributed in each apartment unit, while the pipes connect from the shafts in the circulation ores.

The Photovoltaic panels and solar collectors are placed on the roof with a 0 degree tilting. Most of the roof area is completely filled with panels and their accompanying collectors, only leacing space for service circulation. The demands of the heating and cooling loads, the renewable energy delivered and the total efficency of the systems, was calculated with the software RETScreen.

What makes the space vibrant and alive, is not only the density but the interactions of people caused by various functions which take place along a busy street, a piazza, or open space. This brings influence and affects the image and the quality of the urban environment, and its potential of unifying the human contact with the design, at different scales as a horizontal model. For producing durable and feasible strategies, a must is the integration of the functions that tie together the circulation of people, together with the network of urban scale, allowing interaction and a connection of two organisms.

A more tangible and direct approach, to creating a breathable space that offers a diversity of experiences considering the observer, is the implementation of logical functions which would answer successfully the needs of the users. The project area is located in the northern outskirts of Milan, in the district of Bovisa, it had undergone a sequence of transformations and changes, especially in the second half of the 20th century, giving it an identity of an industrial area, with the gas holders as its symbol. The improvements and reidentification throughout the years, brought different users and laws of adaptation, for this reason, the transformation of the urban surrounding elements was observed. Particular about the project and a leading role in the process of arriving at a solution, are the borders, them being the railway on the east, the representative gas holders on the west, an abandoned but yet rich connection point part on the north, and most important the La Masa Campus of Politecnico di Milano.

Starting from here, for satisfying the demands of the users/ students and bringing a soul to the area, the proposed design holds a complex of volumes that host spaces for sports, culture, and leisure. Homogenizing the functions with the circulation, a nuclear, focal point of interaction and diverse elastic activities is generated, opened up to the gas holders while also interacting with the volumes around. Important to mention are the users which interact with the facilities, planned for the students of the La Masa Campus of Politecnico di Milano, but also for the local inhabitants of the area. Therefore, the project offers cultural, leisure, and sports facilities, moreover, the functions are proposed in a logical and suitable technique, followed by an analysis of the project area and its insufficiency of vivacity.

Underground Floor Plan

The theatre offers also other functions, which would relate to the main purpose. In the underground floor are placed workshop spaces and casual study zones, which can be used by the students but also are open to the public. The idea is to create a building which acts as a interactive, cultural core in the project site, open visually but also physically to the gasometers, which act as a signature of not only the project site, but also the area and surrounding.

Ground Floor Plan

The ground floor offers transparency and visual communication between the spaces, whichofferavarityoffunctionsandactivities. The north area is dedicated to functions related to sport and physical activities, while the core, the center, is where a theatre is planned, together with an open space of a multifunctional character. The south border is approached with less density, allowing better connection and communication with the La Masa campus, also on the same side.
