The main airport system of Milan, is composed of three airports, Milan Malpensa (MXP), Linate Airport (LIN) and the airport in the province of Bergamo, Orio al Serio (BGY), also known by the names Il Caravaggio International Airport ”(Offcial) and“ Milan Bergamo Airport ”(commercial), It is considered as an airport of Milan also, due to the connection of the airport with the city of Milan, which is currently only a shuttle bus, and the low-cost fight offers. The airport is located 5km from the city of Bergamo, in the municipality Orio al Serio, where the name actually comes from, and 50km from Milan. It is the third busiest airport in Italy, and second busiest airport in Milan, with around 14 million passengers per year.
The airport was established in 1937, for miliatry purposes, however in 1972 it had its frst civil fight. Since the airport has been build, the industries in the city moved to this zones and have made a signifcant impact for most of Italy’s income. The airport is located in the middle of Lombardy, Italy’s most industrialized area, and in the center of the Europe’s central southern region. Within radius of 90 minutes, more than 25% of the Italian Economy is produced. Because of its location in front of the A4 freeway, the major Italian logistics hubs and end users can easily be reached by the fow of products arriving and leaving, reducing travel times. The airport started to exponentially expand after Ryanair started operating there in 2003, quickly becoming the Italian airport of choice for low-cost fights. The commercial section of the terminal was enlarged in December 2009 to include new services, stores, and refreshment areas to reduce traveler waiting times. Ten years later, the area designated for non-Schengen fights was also extended.
Orio al Serio airport can be currently accessed either by car or by bus. If reaching the airport by car, the A4 freeway is used, along which the airport is locted. It can be also easily accessible by bus, either from Milan or from Bergamo. Numerous companies offer daily service between the airport and the major cities in northern Italy as well as the rest of the peninsula. Although a train station will be built at Bergamo Airport by 2026, it is currently 3.5 miles (5.6 km) away at Bergamo Railway Station. Between the airport and the train stop, there isn’t an offcial shuttle. About 10 minutes from the train station, there is a bus service run by ATB that links to the airport.

Bergamo Mobility Plans Bergamo has several future mobility plans, which aim to improve the overall transportation structure in the city, but also the access to the peripherical areas. The main project which is considered as a motive for taking Bergamo airport as site to do an intervention on is the project Treno per Orio. The project is infuenced also by the Bergamo FS requalifcation, which would refect positively the idea of building a railway to the airport. It is clear that the city of Bergamo has a bright perspective for improving its mobility, which would also improve the attractiveness of the city. All the projects are planned to be completed by 2026, which is the year when the WOG will be held, an event that will have an infuence on the transport systems, and has a very positive refection on tourism. The planned projects are the following:
1. Treno per Orio A new 5km rail is planned to connect Bergamo Airport with Bergamo FS, but also improve the connection of the airport with the city of Milan since the same rail can be used to reach the airport from the city of Milan. Four platforms are planned, having a train every 10 minutes. The project will signifcantly improve airport accessibility, but also offer other urban connections.
2. Bergamo FS requalifcation - The goal is to transform the Bergamo Railway Station into a new mobility hub, where different urban transport connections will be present, such as trains, buses, and trams. Another aim so to connect the two sides of the city, the north, and the south, by introducing two bridge buildings which would host commercial functions and other activities for the passengers.
3. T2 line - The line will start at Bergamo FS, and reach Villa d’Alme, having 17 stops in total, and sharing a connection with the already existing line T1. The line is proposed along a street that is one of the most frequent in Bergamo, which means it would offer a sustainable solution to congestion.
4. BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) New electric bus lines, which are planned to connect the city of Bergamo with several districts in the outskirts hold signifcant importance in the image of the city, but lack accessibility. One of them is Kilometro Rosso, and the other one is the University of Dalmine, also connecting Bergamo with Dalmine and Verdello.
