Introduzione di Jan Willems Direttore Artistico Theatre Day Productions
E
Era
14

Rimasero scioccati!

Numero 1 disse: “No mi dispiace, io vivo qui solo e non mi piace che qualcuno viva assieme a me. Devi andartene!”. Il fratellino uscì in strada piangendo. Fuori pioveva.

Preface by Jan Willems Artistic Director of Theatre Day Productions
I
t was in the spring of 2009 that TDP was asked to cooperate with EducAid in training animators of Gaza kindergartens for using drama in their work with children. EducAid wished to expand their range of cultural interventions and tools for Gaza pre-school children. As Artistic Director of TDP, I had doubts about our capacity to work with very young children. Also, our drama program focuses on kids in the years they (psychologically speaking) make/design their beliefs and convictions, ages 7-12. Our curiosity about the age group was stirred. We discussed the matter in our artistic team in Gaza. I was able to visit a theatre and dance festival in Amsterdam with groups specializing on theatrical, music, and dance productions for pre-schoolers. And it was a mindblowing experience. Seeing these wonderful pearls of artistic productions, interacting with 3-6 year old children, convinced me of the idea that we cannot start early 37
enough working artistically with children to increase and use their free space of fantasy and imagination. It also made me aware of the lessons these young community participants can give us about spontaneous positive immediate participation. If allowed by the nature of the performance, the children step unto the stage, wish to be part of the beauty produced in front of them, take interaction with the artists as something completely logic, available, necessary. It was quite a refreshing experience after all our debates and efforts to design a drama and theatre program that looks for interaction and involvement in the work of our audiences and participants. We decided to make do an experimental project. We agreed to cooperate in EducAid’s Gaza program
38
and developed a drama technique for working with young children while improvising and adjusting our storytelling techniques for colourful and simple staging using lots of music and funny characters. It worked! We were impressed again by the involvement of our young children. They participated acting out being animals and people and trees and grass; they suggesting solutions to problems of the characters in stories. It was wonderful to see how it all worked! They actually assisted in fine-tuning our drama teaching tools for their animators. In Dec 2009, we performed a complete theatre show acted by the trained animators (all women) in front of a happy audience of young children, parents and teachers. Our first project of a new program was finished. Because, after this experience we could only decide that working with very young children and their animators and teachers is an important artistic task that we have to make part of our regular program and which we have inspiration to learn and to
create. In 2011 we repeated the program successfully in cooperation with EducAid. I believe EducAid was quite happy to be the initiator of all this and was as satisfied as I am with the result in their network of kindergartens in Gaza. Jan Willems, January 27, 2011

The Story of the three goats and devil by Rafat Al Aydeh
O
nce upon time ‌there were three goats who lived in peace in the middle of water and green. They ate the grass and drunk the water from the small stream and they slept hugging each other. One day the land became dry; no grass to eat , no water to drink and the poor three goats lived hard times without food and water. And they thought to look for another place to live and during their search they found a wonderful and fertile place on the other side of river. However to reach the other side of river they had to cross a bridge and under this bridge lived the great ugly devil. Anyone who tried to cross the bridge was attacked and eaten by him. The tree goats were very frightened when they thought of the ugly devil but they were starving and they needed the food from the other side. The youngest goat decided to go. She started walking on the bridge, the ugly devil heard her feet and suddenly his 47
ugly head appeared. The poor youngest goat was very afraid. The ugly devil said “Who’s that tripping over my bridge?” The youngest goat replied “Oh, it is only me, a thin, poor, and ill little goat and I am going to the other side to make myself fat” The ugly devil said “I am going to eat you” The youngest goat replied “Oh, No, Mr. Devil don’t eat me, I am too little and thin, wait a bit till the second goat comes, she much bigger”. The devil said “Ok, now go away, I am waiting for the second goat to come, go!” The youngest goat crossed the bridge successfully and reached the other side. She was very happy and started to play and eat. A little wile later, the second goat decided to cross the bridge and started to walk. The ugly devil heard her foots
48
and suddenly his ugly head appeared again. “Who’s that, tripping over my bridge?”. The second goat replied “Oh, it is only me, I am going up to the other side to make myself fat” The ugly devil said “I am going to eat you” The second goat replied “Oh, No, Mr. Devil don’t eat me, wait a bit till the third goat comes. She much bigger.” The devil said “Ok, now go away, I am waiting for the third goat to come, go!” The second goat succeeded crossing the bridge and reached the other side. She was very happy and started to play and eat with her youngest sister. Finally it was the third goat’s turn, she started to walk and again the ugly devil appeared with his head saying: “Who’s that tripping over my bridge? The goat said “I am the biggest goat” The ugly devil said “I am going to eat you.” The biggest goat replied “you cannot eat me, because I’ll eat you!“ and
attacked the ugly devil and knocked the devil with her two big horns; the devil fell down and into the water. It was the end of the great ugly devil. From that moment the people started crossing the bridge without fear and the three goats lived happily and peacefully ever after. [ The end ]

The Letter “Th” by Mohammed Al-Hissi A very important note before reading the story of The Letter “Th”: This is what the Letter “Th” in Arabic looks like: “ ” This is what the Letter “T” in Arabic Looks like: “ ” The whole story talkes about the shape of these two letters in Arabic.
O
nce upon the time there was a letter called letter “Th”, It was sleeping on its bed. Letter “Th” looks like a plate that contains three dots, and this letter lives in a very beautiful dress, the dress word starts by letter “Th”, and anyone who wants to live in this dress, his/her name must start by the letter “Th”. One day, letter “Th” woke up, and the dots woke up with him except for one dot. This dot was very lazy and sleepy. It was hiding under the bed. Letter “Th” washed his face; then he went to say good morning to his dress. The letter: Good morning beautiful dress! The dress: Who are you? And how did you get in my dress? The letter: I’m your friend letter “Th”, and I’ve been with you for a long time. The dress: you are not my friend, and you haven’t been with me for a long time ago.You are letter “T”, you have only two dots, and anyone who lives in my dress must start by letter “Th” and have three dots. Get out of my dress! The letter: No I’m Letter “Th”, Count my dots. The dress counted the dots, and there were only two. The letter: Where is the third dot? Where did it go? 51
The dress: Get out! And don’t return back in my dress. Anyone who lives in my dress should start by letter “Th”. Letter “T” (who was Letter “Th” before) got out of the dress. He cried. He wondered where the third dot had gone. He kept crying and wandered in the streets. Other letters asked him: “What’s wrong with you?” He told them the whole story; all started looked for the third dot. They shouted: “Lazy dot, please return back to your letter”. Letter “T” was shouting and crying until he became tired; then he sat down beside the dress and shouted: “Dress, please let me in, I’m cold and your dress warms me”. The dress: I can’t, anyone who lives in me should start by letter “Th”. The letter kept crying more and more, and it was cold. The third dot heared his voice, and whispered: “This is my letter, I left him and kept
52
sleeping, I’m lazy, and the dress must send him out”. The dot looked at the letter from the pocket of the dress, and said: Letter “T” who was letter “Th” before, I’m you dot, look at me, I’m up in the pocket, look at me. The letter: “The dress refused to let me in until I return back to Letter “Th”. The dot: so what should I do? I want to help you and return you back to the dress. The letter: “jump on me”. The dot: I’m afraid to break myself, and become several pieces; then I won’t be a dot anymore. The letter: “don’t be afraid, I’ll hold you by my plate, I’ll count until three, and you can jump, don’t be afraid”. The dot closed its eyes for fear. Letter “T” counted till three, then the dot jumped in the letter’s plate, and then Letter “T” returned back to Letter “Th”. He was very, very happy. Then, letter “Th” called the dress: “my lovely dress, I turned back into letter “Th”, leave me back into your lovely warm dress, please”. Letter “Th” returned back to the dress happily, he counted his three dots and told them: Don’t let me out in the cold,
never let me out the dress and never leave me anymore” The third dot: “I’m really sorry, and I promise that I won’t be lazy again and leave you, my friend!”. Letter “Th” returned to his bed, fell asleep and had many happy dreams. [ The End ]

The Chickens and the Factory by Rafat Al Aydeh
O
ne day there was a group of chickens living in peace with each other. They ate, drunk, and raised their chicks. An experienced rooster was living with these chickens. It was a retired pilot. He controlled the daily life in the barn. The owner of this barn brought huge amounts of food every day. And the chickens ate everything without understanding the reason for these big mounts. He was not a generous person. The chickens became fatter and bigger fast. Suddenly, the rooster heard the sound of a huge truck. He went up to the top of the barn, looked at the truck, and was shocked! The truck was loaded with machines for a new salami factory beside the barn. The rooster thought: this is for making chicken salami sausages.‌ And now he understood why the barn’s owner was bringing these big amounts of food.... so that the chickens would become fat and ready to be slaughtered. At that moment the rooster decided the chickens must do morning exercises; and this activity was secret. Day after day the owner came and checked the chickens. He noticed
55
that they were becoming thinner and thinner. He rapidly decided to start the factory immediately, before the chickens would lose more weight…. The rooster organized a meeting and invited the chickens to make a plan so that the project of the barn’s owner would fail. The rooster explained the dangers surrounding the chickens. The chickens were shocked. They feared for their lives. One of the chickens suggested to hide their eggs; everyone thought about this suggestion, but this would give the owner an excuse to slaughter them even faster; another chicken suggested to kill themselves before the owner did; everyone objected to this tough decision. Suddenly the rooster shouted: let’s escape from the barn. The chickens waved their wings as a sign of acceptance. They decided on a plan to construct an airplane that would get them out. They
56
prepared the tools. Days passed in which they worked secretly preparing the plane; until everything was ready. The rooster set the starting point at dawn after the same night. But without any warning, the owner broke into the barn and took one of the chicken as an experiment for his project. The chicken shouted for help but the other chickens woke up only after the owner had left the barn. They hesitated, thought of solutions. The rooster came out, equipped with all tools, in order to face the owner. He wore his military uniform, hung the risk medal on his chest, and held up the iron scissors, shouting: “everyone line up in rows! It is my task to return the lost chicken. You have to prepare yourselves according to the settled plan”. The rooster went out to look for the chicken holding fighter’s spirit and longing for freedom between his wings. After passing the barbed wire he reached the factory. He entered quietly and looked at all directions. Then he saw the factory’s owner preparing the machines for starting. Then he saw the chicken inside a cage. He rushed to it and calmed her down. Then, the rooster went to the electrical panel, turned off the electricity, returned to
the cage quickly, and set the chicken free. He took her to the departure place where everyone was ready to go. And before the owner could re-power the electricity, the plane took off. The wings of all chickens were waving and lifted the plane. They got out from the place that kept them prisoners. They flew to their freedom and dreams. They all lived happily ever after. [ The end ]

O
nce upon the time, there was a number called Number 3. He lived with his father, mother, brother, and sister. All of them lived in an apartment on the third floor. The first floor was for Numbers 1, the second floor was for Numbers 2 and the third for Numbers 3. One day, the three children were playing together. They had a scissors and were cutting some papers. After a few minutes, Old Brother 3 told his Little Brother 3: “let’s play, I’ll cut your hair off like the haircutter”. Litter Number 3 sat down and his old brother started cutting his hair. Sister 3 was spraying water on the head of her little brother. After the hair cut, Old Brother 3 and his sister looked at their little brother. They were shocked! Their Little Brother 3 had became number 2. Sister 3 became very afraid, and Old Brother 3 ran and called his parents. The mother said: “What happened to my son?” The father said: “This isn’t our son, this is number 2, and his place isn’t here with us!” The Sister 3: This is my brother, but... Old Brother 3 told her to be silent. Father 3 said: “you should go down to the second floor, you aren’t our son”.
59
Little Brother 3: I’m your son, but my hair has been cut off. The father: “No, you should go down. And I will start looking for my son. He is a Number 3!” Small Brother Number 2 (who was actually number 3) went down to the second floor and knocked on the door. Number 2 came out, and said: “Hello, what do you want?” Brother 2: I want to live with you. Real Number 2: “No, this won’t work, I have only two rooms, one for me and my wife, and the second one is for my two children. You should go! Go down” Brother 2 went down to the first floor, knocked on the door. Number 1 came out, and said: “Hello, what do you want?” Number 2: “I want to live with you”. Number 1: “No, this won’t work, I am one and alone, I don’t like that anyone lives with me.You should go.”

The Little Brother went out to the street crying. It was raining outside, his Old Brother 3 saw him from the window and felt sad. He called him: “my little brother, I’m sorry, come up, it’s cold outside”. The little brother: “your father will kick me out” The Old Brother 3: “don’t be afraid”. Brother 2 went up, and his Old Brother opened the door and entered him to the room, and his sister came in, the little brother was crying. The Old Brother: “don’t cry, let’s think about what we’ll do” Sister 3: “I have an idea, let’s get the hair and stick it on his head” The old brother: “I have a glue and a stick, I’ll bring them!” He brought them and glued his brother’s hair; and when his hair returned to his head, he transformed back into number 3. His older brother told him: “I’m sorry, I won’t do it again”. The Old Brother called his parents, and told them the story. The father became sad because he had dismissed his own son. He felt bad about the action of the Old Brother, but the mother said: “let’s do a beautiful party to celebrate our son’s return”.
They made a party and invited the entire building of Numbers, and Little Brother Number 3 became happy again. [ The End ]
